The photo of Elisabeth was in a book sent to me by Celia Melba Wikert. She and Minnie Martha Wikert put it together some years ago, and Celia was kind enough to send a copy to me when we established the connection between Emanuel and Simon as brothers.
Now if we could just establish a connection from Matthias to another Wikert family in early PA history!

Does anyone known what happened to Nancy Wikert, born in Sharpsburg in 1854 and living with her mother Elisabeth, widow of Emanuel, in 1885 in Geneva, Franklin County, Iowa? She was listed as insanae in 1880 and 1885. Did she die young or was she committed? A burial place would be nice to complete her story.

By the way I share the use of this site with junecaley37 who used to have the call name of dollcollector37. This being said sorry for starting such a stir about Josiah Wikert way back in Dec 2006. Although I still have strong feelings about this since the 1830 Census listed him as head of houshold. To contact me though please do NOT hit reply on the bottom of the screen but contact me at smwikert@cfu.net otherwise your reply will only go then to June Caley and I will not receive it.

This is in response to the info on the Moon family: The father and mother of Joseph Moon was Alexander (Alex) Moon and Marie Romels both who lived in New York. The father and mother of Minnie Wehrman (the way I found Wehrman spelled in an obit) was William Frederick Wehrman b. 22 October 1824, d.26 November 1878 in Hardin Co.,Eldora, Iowa and mother Johana Mary Luecke b. 25 Jul 1828 and d. 14 Sept 1917 also in Hardin Co. Eldora, Iowa. They were both from Hanover Germany and were married in 1846. Hope this gives you more info!!! Steve Wikert

Through Ancestry, I found a link to Joseph and Minnie Moon. Josie was Johanna Moon, born in 1877 in Iowa. Joseph W. Moon was born 12 March 1851 in Warren Co., New York and died 31 August 1921 in Heron Lake, Jackson Co., Minnesota. Wife Minnie was Wilhelmina Marie Wehrmann, born 12 April 1850 in Hannover, Niedersacksen, Germany and died 18 June 1927 in Heron Lake. In the 1880 census of Jackson, Hardin Co., Iowa, the children were Allie, age 5, born about 1875, Ama, age 4, born about 1876, Johana, age 3, born in 1877 and Joseph, age 1, born in 1879. In the 1900 census of the same area, children were Eldon, age 12, born about 1888, Minnie May, age 11, born about 1889, Frankie, age 8, born about 1892 and Willie, age 7, born about 1893. In 1910, the family was in Midway, Cottonwood Co., Minnesota with just Willie left of the children. In 1920 in Weimer, Jackson Co., Minnesota also with Willie "Bill". Have not traced back any further yet.

My great grandfather was Simon Wikert and great grandmother was Josie Moon.
My grandfather was Fred Wikert.
I am having trouble finding out much information about Josie (birth and death)dates etc. I did find a nice obit on her parents which note Ella Wikert. Do you have any information on Ella which would help with Josie?
I have also hit a dead end with after Josie's parents, Joseph Moon and Minnie Wehrman Moon.
thanks

Hi Virginia,
There seems no question that Matthias is Simon's father, in spite of that stupid census that names him Josiah. I have found great quantities of mistakes in the census. The Pittsburgh And Allegheny Directory has Susanna listed as the widow of Matthias and she was living with her son Daniel in Sharpsburg, next to Simon and his family. Son Emanuel was several houses away. Daniel was buried out of the Etna Congregational Church, as was one of the sisters. The only sticking point is a couple of the girls and a brother, who may be named Charles. There was a Charles in Sharpsburg who then vanished.

It seems that spelling is the biggest problem in finding any early Wikerts. I have lost count in how many ways it is spelled. It makes searching for immigration and early records a horrible quest.

Finding where Matthias came from is now my quest (apart from finding the girls). Lancaster County has other Wikerts listed in the census (with various spellings). One family that has intriqued me is that of Johann Philip Weicker of Strasburg. I have found bits and pieces of his family on Ancestry and the LDS. Philip married Anna Miller in January of 1785 and had 9 children. At least 4 of his children are not named, and Matthias could fit in.

Other children of his are George (1792), Susanna (1794), Daniel (1798), Michael (1800) and Isaac (1806), all born in Lancaster County in Lampter Township. Philips father (Johann Michael)is said to come from Eschweiler, Germany. I would like to do more on this family, trying reverse geneaology!

Any more details on Lancaster COunty families that could be connected would be welcome,

Diane

Hello,

It's nice to meet you. I, too, am a descendant of Simon Wikert. I agree that Matthias is the true ancestor we're looking for. Perhaps Josiah was a nickname or middle name. My line comes from Simon (1), Mary Ellen Wikert Snyder (2),Myrtle Snyder Grimm (3), and my mother, Adeline Grimm Ronnebaum (4). I would like to compare notes on the family. I certainly would like to find Matthias' father!

Hope to hear from you soon!

Virginia Knipper

First I, a person at the University of Pittsburgh, only have information on a web site because I have free server space and wish to acheive connections to families of interest and allow us all to freely utilize it as a reference point to further productive research. In no way do I state this is true factual information, that should not be researched and proven or disproven through documentation.

Yes, one of the census records list's, what looks like in the script hand writting, Josiah Wikert. However, if you attempt to trace this line through the next census it is clearly Matthias with the same house hold individuals named and no following census names a Josiah that can be found (as yet).

I personally researched my direct line back to Simon and all of the other work has been a collaboration with Wikert family members all participating. Any proven corrections are very welcomed. We look forward to non-judgemental enjoyable interaction in getting this family, with known surname spelling variations, traced back futher.

Very sincerely. BK Games

First, I would dearly love to e-mail people personally over this sticky issue with Matthias Wikert. These message boards don't give me the instant feedback I need.

Two, Matthias Wikert is a name that I found here in Pittsburgh through the Etna Church records, which I was translating from German. Daniel Wikert is in the records in Etna as well as Emanuel. Susanna is mentioned. Daniel was living next to brother Simon in 1860 in Sharpsburg with his mother Susanna. I passed it on to Brian Games of Pitt.

Susanna was listed in the Pittsburgh and Allegheny City Directory as the widow of Matthias.

When I found Matthias in Lancaster County, his name was on a deed as Matthias in 1819. I have found few other references to him in Lancaster, even though I traveled there. I need to go again to find what other Wikert family he may be attached to. A 1810 and 1820 census have him listed as the head of a family, and the 1810 may have counted his mother in the household.

I have found his name as Josiah only once, on a 1850 census in Pine Township, Allegheny County, PA. Since no other reference to this name exists, I thought it might be a mistake.

What are your sources for information? I tend to go strictly by sources I can find at courthouses, etc. You have included the name Charles in your list of children to Matthias and Susanna. I have found him in Sharpsburg, but have no other link to this family for him.

Please contact me directly at 150atf@salsgiver.com so I can send you reports of my sources. I would love to know of your sources, including the 1830 census. I have not located any of the family in 1830, but Daniel's record of death in the Etna church mentions he came to the Pittsburgh area in 1834.

Diane

Here is what I have learned
The idea of Mathias Wikert and Susanna Henrich was started by reseach done by a person from the Univ of Pittsburg which is incorrect.
What I have found is that the the pair was Josiah Wikert and Susanna ? (1830 Census info). Both were born around 1785. Married about 1816. They had 8 children:
Nancy, Elizabeth(Eliza), Susan, Emanuel (1820-1875), Daniel, Simon, and Charles. My family came from the union of Emanuel and Elizabeth(Betsy)Schwabb(1854-1916)in about 1851. This union produced Lance Fatland, Catherine(Kate), John Thomas, Samuel, Henry, Daniel, Elizabeth(Eliza)Susanna, Edward Emanuel, Cyrus, and Simon. My grandfather was Henry Franklin(1864-1938) and he married Ella Mary Moon(1874-1947).
They had 12 children one was my father Milan Alan Wikert
Have more details if interested
Steve Wikert
Late note: The pair of Josie Moon and Simon Wikert and Ella Mary Moon and Henry Franklin Wikert was a situation of two brothers marrying two sisters.

Very few of the Wikert families seem to spell it this way. My Wikerts came from Lancaster PA around 1817, a little earlier than you are looking for. Matthias Wikert (Weickert) married Susanna Henrich and they and their children came to Pittsburgh in the 1830s. Pittsburgh was where the spelling was simplified. What county of PA are you looking for? I can't seem to find any family with a child named Matthias. Some day I hope to locate his parents and siblings, but now believe they might come from another county. I did find a Weickert listed in Hessians who came to fight the Revolution. Have seen many other origins in several countries. Any good guesses?
