HRH
I am researching the WILBY families of West Yorkshire, particularily those originally from the Ossett/Dewsbury/Hartshead areas.
George William's father Benjamin was born in West Leeds in 1848. Do you have any information on him ie his parentage?
I presently do not subscribe to Findmypast or Ancestry so will have a look tomorrow at the library.
Is there any family information that your ggfather George W may have joined the army and died during WW1?
Should you wish to contact me my email address is raymond.wilby@gmail.com
Regards
Raymond Wilby
Morley, West Yorks uk.
Hi, Unfortunately- we do not have a National Death Index in Canada.
Many Provinces now -have some of their Vital Events indexed - and online - but restricted to specific years - where the records are considered Public Record.

Perhaps an Obituary was published - in Engoand - Did his wife Florence or the Children have any information.
Did Florence Re Marry?
https://www.familysearch.org/
Have you searched Family Search Org - online.?
Cheers, Stella

My Great Grandfather was George William Wilby born 1872, England, I can't find his death in the UK indexes, but I know he travelled to Canada looking for work in the 1900's(he was a Currier). He was in his 40s when he died.He left behind in England his wife Florence, and 3 children. In the canadian indexes i've found a William Wilby, died 1916, of diptheria in hospital. How/or who do i contact to find out if this is my relative. Thanks

John
Unfortunately Dewsbury PR's for 1653 to 1738 have not been transcribed to the internet.
There is a manual transcrption held at Wakefield Archives as the original PR's & fiche copies are in very poor condition. I once transcribed the Wilby entries from this manual transcription done by a Mr A Lonsdale in 1999.
All I was able to ascertain confirms the information I believe you may have; namely:-
Thomas s/o Thomas bpt'd 26/8/1675
Joshua s/o Thomas bpt'd 18/6/1680
Ann d/o Thomas bpt'd 15/10/1685
I believe that the following are connected:-
Joshua s/o Thomae, Ossett - buried 9/7/1695
Ann d/o Thomae, Ossett - buried 19/5/1686.
There are also the following entries:-
Maria d/o Thomae bpt'd 18/11/1686
Thomae Wilbie mr'd Maria Gawthorp 3/12/1688
Maria d/o Thomae bpt'd 11/5/1689
Maria d/o Thomae, Ossett, buried 24/3/1697.
Un-named d/o Thomae buried 16/9/1692 (Aborted)
Martha w/o Thomae buried 12/11/1692.
Thomas s/o Thomae, Ossett, bpt'd 2/6/1695.
I cannot at present find a marriage of a Thomas Wilby to a Martha.
As I said the records are very sketchy around this time and further investigation is needed.
Regards
Raymond

Hi again Joanne
Since previous posting I have had a further look for your Russell WILBY.
Firstly may I asked what the 'H' stood for? It may offer some assistance in this matter.
There is a Russell WILBY in the US 1920 Census in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (Familysearch/Beta) son of Joseph WILBY & Margaret - aged 18 (1902) - with siblings Florence, Lillian(Lodge)+family & Howard.
US 1910 Census Russell is aged 9.
US 1900 Census Joseph WILBY appears with his wife Margaret & two children. Joseph born Jan 1872 Pennsylvania & his parents POB's England & Pennsylvania. Margaret born Mar 1875 Pennsylvania & both her parents POB is Scotland. It is further specified that they had been married for 7 years (1893).
Familysearch/Beta has a marriage listed in 1893 - Joseph Henry WILBY & Margaret WOODSIDE (Licence no. 64812)
US 1920 Census also lists two other persons as living with Joseph & Margaret - John WOODSIDE (50) & Samuel WOODSIDE (43).
Unfortuately the US 1880 Census for Philadelphia does not appear on Familysearch.org.
Here is long shot - Familysearch/Beta - Death of Henry WILBY 12/7/1897 aged 75(1822). Is this Joseph's father? I have an entry on my FTM records of a Henry WILBY baptised 15/7/1821 Kirkheaton, West Yorkshire UK, son of Cornelius WILBY & Hannah(?).
If you need to discuss further my email address is wilbyrj@aol.com.
Regards
Raymond Wilby
Morley, West Yorkshire UK

Hi Joanne

John responded through the Rootsweb mailing list suggesting that Russel's father may have been an Albert WILBY who appears on the US Census 1880, born England, with his wife Ruth and two children.

Albert WILBY appears in my research of the West Yorkshire Wilby's

Albert WILBY born 1st qtr 1850 registered Hunslet/Wortley (Leeds) West Yorkshire UK, son of Robert WILBY & Nancy WORSNOP.
Ruth Hannah Harrop born 2ng qtr 1853 (baptised 22/5/1853) Ossett, West Yorkshire UK, daughter of Benjamin HARROP & Grace NETTLETON.
Albert & Ruth married 2nd qtr 1876 registered Dewsbury, West Yorkshire UK.
According to the US Census 1880 at Familysearch.org daughters Elizabeth Harrop WILBY (1877) & Louisa Harrop WILBY (1879) were born in PA (US).
No record of them being born in the UK.

Regards
Raymond Wilby
Morley, West Yorkshire UK.

Thank you for your suggestion! My grandfather Russell H. Wilby Sr. was born in 1901 in Philadelphia. The only siblings I know that he had were a sister Lillian Lodge and a brother John. There might had been a brother Luther too.

He had five sons:Russell,Walter,Robert(my father),Joseph,Richard and a daughter Viola.

Hello James, I've recently been researching the name Wilby from Brandon. One family moved to Mildenhall and a son and his family were living in Eye in 1901. I wonder if you could be related to them.
Ask you Gran a few questions about her ancestors, there may be a link.
The family in Eye who I've been researching are Robert Wilby and his wife Sarah Harding.
Evelyn in Kent

Angela

In our research of the WILBY name in West Yorkshire ie the Leeds;Morley;Wakefield;Dewsbury;Batley;Ossett;Thornhill areas, I have come across numerous Wilby's that have originated from the Suffolk, particularly the Burgate area. One particular Burgate Wilby family, led by Charlotte Wilby DOBpt 30th April 1820, established themselves in Churwell, Morley in the 1860's not a mile from where I now live.

My personal Wilby FH can be traced back to the Hartshead area of West Yorkshire around 1650's.

There has been little movement or discussion on the Rootsweb WILBY mailing of recent months so I am pleased with this new flush of interest. Can I suggest that we transfer our discussion to the WILBY mailing list.

Should anyone wish to contact me direct my email address is wilbyrj@aol.com.

Regards
Raymond Wilby
Morley
West Yorkshire UK.

Hi, I am also researching the Wilby (Willby) family who married into the Voller family. George Robert Voller married Marian Emily Willby in 1911 in Surrey. They lived in Dereham, North Elmham and Mitford areas. Their only daughter Marian Wilby Voller (b 1912) died in the district of Acle, Norfolk in 1974.
Would be pleased to find where she was buried.

Thanks,
cosplayer

It looks rather as if Sarah and Benjamin did not marry. In those days, couples who lived together without being married almost always pretended they were. Illegitimacy was shameful and there were legal restriction on matters of inheritance. It was quite common for children of such unions to carry the name of their father as a middle name. If the parents subsequenty married, the children would quietly drop the last name. Meantime, the mother could either pretend her real married name was her maiden name or that the children were actually sired by her legal spouse. I have seen instances of both.

I have been working on my family tree for a long time and have done pretty well on most branches. The problematic one has been the Wilby branch.

My fathers name is Kevin Wilby born 1948.
My grandfather was James Seymour Wilby born 1917 died 1969
My great grandfather was Benjamin Seymour
And his father was John Seymour.

So how did I come to be named Wilby?

The story goes that James Seymour Wilby’s mother was named Sarah Wilby, and when she died in 1948 this was her name. During her life she insisted that her name had always been Sarah Wilby.

I now know that she was born Sarah Barraclough and that her fathers name was Walter Barraclough.

Sarah married a Charles Wilby at Bradford parish church (now the cathedral) on 10th October 1903. he gave his occupation as builders labourer and fathers name as David (deceased) his age was 38 years.

Sarah and Benjamin Seymour seem to have started to live together some time around 1914, this is when the children’s names change from Wilby to Seymour Wilby.

Charles Wilby has been a total mystery, I have been unable to find a definite birth or death and I don’t know where he came from.

Any information you have on a Charles Wilby, Sarah Wilby formally Barraclough or a David Wilby that was dead before 1903 would be much appreciated.
Hi,

All I know about the Wilbys in Rush, Ireland, was in my post.

My father was born in Rush, Ireland, in 1919. His mother was a Bailey and his father was a Donnelly. I recently received a copy of my father's original birth record. His mother's former name was Wilby and she used Wilby as my father's middle name. We know she was born a Bailey so it seems she first married a Wilby that we were not aware of. There was only one Wilby family in Rush in the only census I was able to search. I wondered if my grandmother had married Harry Wilby after his wife passed away. Perhaps she had married a Wilby relative. We just don't know where the Wilby name came from. We hoped that the Wilby family in Rush might have some information.

Sorry if I got your hopes up. That is all I know at this point in time.

Deborah

Hi,
There's a good chance that this Harry Wilby could be our Grandmother's brother. She had a brother Harry Wilby who married Harriet Morley,31 October 1898 at St Giles Church in Norwich, Norfolk. They had one son Harry born in 1898.
We've never been able to find what happened to them and wonder if they could be this family in Ireland.
I'd be pleased to hear from you.
Anne

Harry Wilby b. about 1872 and his wife Harriet b. about 1873, in England, appear in the 1911 census of Ireland. They have a son Harry b. about 1900. They lived in Rush, just north of Dublin, and Harry was a coast guard. I would appreciate hearing from anyone who knows anything about this family. Thank you.

Hi Terry
I don't think Magdelena will mind me intercepting your enquiry.
George WILBY born Ossett 15th June 1828, married Maria Duxbury at St Marks, Woodhouse, Leeds 2qtr 1850.
George & Maria moved to London between 1858 & 1861.
George & family on 1871 Census - name written as WILBEY.
George died 2nd qtr 1877. Maria came back to Leeds and remarried 4th qtr 1878 to Edward Rickard.
Maria on 1881 Census with Edward, but children's surname transcribed as WILLEY, a common error for the name WILBY. They were living at 9 Webster Fold, Beeston.
If you contact me direct at wilbyrj@aol.com I can let you have copies of census etc.

Re: Wilby family tree

Hi Magdalena,
Saw your message re Yorkshire Wilbys.
I am returning to pursue Wilby family history, having put it aside for several years. In particular I am trying to trace:
1 George Wilby, born Ossett 15 June 1828, father Isaac Wilby (Son of George and Sarah Wilby), mother Eliza Wilby nee Scholes (Daughter of Joseph and Mary Scholes).
2 His wife Maria nee Duxbury. Married 2 June 1850.
3 Their son Joseph Wilby born 6 Dec 1864, Soho, London.

I have found George and Maria 1851 Census in Leeds, but nothing further until Joseph (ocup. Miner) appears 25 Dec 1886 at Leeds PC to marry Hannah Butterfield.
No trace of any of them inbetween, and no idea what happened to George or Maria.
Have you happened to come across them at all? Cannot even find George and Maria on the 1861 Census.
Wilby's in Christchurch, Hampshire?

Hello, I have been trying quite unsuccessfully to trace the Wilby side of my husbands family tree. My dead end comes at his GGGrandparents - Charles John Wilby b1823 Christchurch Hampshire and Louisa Richards b1834 Limehouse Middlesex.

In regards to Charles John Wilby, I have also discovered that he has at times been noted as John Charles Wilby also. I have him as John C Wilby in the 1861, 1871, and 1881 Census living at St Pancras (I cannot find a census for him for 1841 or 1851). I know of this to be the correct family from other sources. I have copies of most of the childrens birth certificates which I ordered, this is where I get both the Charles John and John Charles mix of names (the mothers name etc on the certificates are the same). I have his death certificate as John Charles Wilby d 18 Aug 1884. He was a coachman/omnibus driver for most of his life and on his death certificate his cause of death is listed as a fracture of the skull caused by falling off omnibus - accidental.

As for Louisa Richards, apart having her name as such on the childrens birth certificates, and being Louisa Wilby on the same 1861, 1871, and 1881 census, as well as the 1891 census living with the eldest son, I can find no record of a marriage. There are a possible of 1841 and 1851 census for her as Richards, living with a younger brother, with her uncle and auntie (the Limehouse birth link on the later census). I am still searching for a death certificate (possibly 1915) but proof of a marriage certificate is impossible for me so far.

On the 1871 census, there is a Ruth Wilby listed as Mother living with John (or Charles) and Louisa. Ruth is listed as aged 76 so born about 1794 or 1795, and listed as born Northhampton, Northampshire.

I have the list of children as follows -
John Charles - no positive ID birth found
Louisa Alice - no positive ID birth found
Walter - 1859 (birth certificate) and marriage certificate 26 Sept 1880 to Sarah Lindsey b1861
Charlotte Mary Ann - 1861 (birth certificate)
Emily Clara Kate - 1867 (birth certificate)
Eleanor Florence - 1871 (birth certificate)

Although I have been able to find other descendant relatives, all have been able to trace no further back than John C and Louisa Wilby of the 1861 census. At least I have found Louisa's maiden name.

From family stories Walter's father was a coachman to a family in which the daughter fell in love with him. She was told that she would be disowned if this relationship continued, but love won out and the ran off together. She had enough money already of her own apparently, and one of Walter's youngest daughters before she died told stories of how they used to go and visit their grandmother who owned in a very nice house at Belsize Park.

We are living in Australia so searching is made so much more difficult. Amazingly enough though, it is cheaper for us to order and buy certificates from the UK than it is for an Australian certificate of the same type. Go figure.

Hearing from anyone who thinks they may have a link or any information or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Regards,
Tracy Heritage Wilby
Hi Karen
Just spotted your message about Midge Wilby. My mother, Kathleen Wilby, was a cousin of MIdge's, daughter of Arnold Wilby;s brother Edward who lived at Manor House, Springhead, Saddleworth when Arnold and family lived at Stoneswood.

My sister Susan has several stories of Uncle Arnold (as my mother called him) which I can arrange for her to, send you if you wish.

That's it for now.

Best wishes

Jim Knight
