I saw your post about Wesley Everhart. Glen Everhart is my father, Charles Everhart was my grandfather, and Wes was his father. My dad tells me that one of Charles's sisters, Angie, married a Wilcoxson. We can't seem to get beyond Wesley Everhart--my cousin thinks he changed the spelling of his name.
Anyway, contact me at lizwelch@insightbb.com if you want. My dad is still living (88) and is in a nursing home.

Liz

Looking for Cemetery in Barren Co., KY

Can anyone give me the exact location of the Blue Springs Grove Cemetery (a/k/a) Wilcoxson Cemetery in Barren Co., KY? I believe the info I acquired was from the Green Co. library, which indicated that the cemetery was between Park and Seymour on the Mary Johnson farm. There was a list of 12 Wilcoxson's and 2 Huff's buried there. I have been up and down the road between Park and Seymour countless times and can only find a smaller Cemetery known as the Johnson Cemetery with 2 Wilcoxson's buried there. My husband and I spoke with one gentleman living in the area that pointed out what I would call a private lane to us that had one house down it and a barn at the end. When we got to the barn we stopped because the entire area was overgrown and it was impossible to see anything, plus it was the height of hunting season and we didn't think that trashing around in the underbrush would be a good idea. Can anyone help us?

Thank you.

Eva Wilcoxson

Thrillingly, we've had a number of Boone-Wilcoxsons add their results to our project. Some very clear genetic patterns are emerging, and we may be closer to identifying how, when and where this clan is connected to William Wilcockson of the Great Migration.

Stay tuned!

Or better yet, send us your Wilcox / Wilcoxson men!

Lisa Wilcox
Wilcox DNA Project
wilcoxery@gmail.com

John and Sarah Boone Wilcockson/Wilcoxson

I am looking for any descendents of John Wilcoxson (1720-1782?) married to Sarah Boone (1724-1815). I've joined the Wilcox project at Family Tree DNA- a terrific group that is trying to learn more about our common ancestors.

If you know of a male Wilcoxson/Wlllcoxson/Wilcox (don't get hung up on spellings variations) that have connections to Sarah and John, to Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Kentucky, Tennessee,and/ or Collin County, Texas, please contact me (email: cwootton@aol.com ).

Even if you don't know of a living male Wilcoxson, Wilcox, etc. any and all information is helpful as I'm trying to shed some light on a bit of information the DNA testing for my brother raised. All of this is so fascinating.

Also, I just might have some information that would help you with your brick walls.

For anyone consisdering DNA testing, (other Wilcox/Wilcoxson testees there other than descendents of John Wilcockson 1720) check out the DNA Wilcox project:

http://www.familytreedna.com/group-join.aspx?Group=Wilcox

Take a look and if you are interested join or contact me.
Carol Willcoxson Wootton

Who were these folks? Researchers over the decades have offered some theories and some possible documentation.

Now DNA testing reveals that this clan is closely related to that founded by William Wilcockson of Connecticut. If you are a direct male descendant of either (i.e., bearing some variant of the surname) your genetic information could help determine when and how the connection occurred.

I'm trying to get past an adoption in the 1880s, and every tiny bit of data can help. Please consider joining and testing through the Wilcox DNA project at:
http://www.familytreedna.com/group-join.aspx?Group=Wilcox
It might even help with your own brick walls. ;-)

Lisa Wilcox

I would be very interested in your bible transcription!! Have you posted it anywhere????
She and husband John Masters separated sometime after 1830, whether they actually divorced I can not say, but you can find her in the 1850 census in dau Mary Jane Mitchell's family, then in the 1860 in dau. Nancy Miller's family. John Masters is found alone in the 1850 Adair Co. Ky. census.
Sincerely,
Vicki Piper

He served in the Civil WAr and is buried in the Rock Island National Cemetary. He was married to Amanda E. Bolton and had five children. He lists his parents as being born in North Carolina on census records. I am wondering if he's related to the Wilcoxson family that married into the Boone family. Any help would be appreciated!

They have tossed out a lot of old lineages because of poor proof sent in or requiring more proof.....its not as easy as it used to be to get into DAR as it was say, 15-20 years ago.....

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Barbara Whiteside

The second letter referred to in a previous post is dated March 28, 1861 and postmarked Canton, Illinois. It is also filed at the KY History Center in the Boone file, as is the other letter I posted prior to this one.

March 28, 1861

Mr Draper
Dear Sir

I am a son of Elijah Wilcoxson, deceased. I have just received a letter from you addressed to him. It becomes my painful duty to inform you that my father is no more. He died the 3rd of last July in his 71st year, he was born July 28th, 1789.

You say you was informed that my father was a nephew of Col BOon. He was a grandnephew of Col Boon being a son of John and Sarah Boone Wilcoxsen, formerly Sarah Boon, a sister of Col Boon. John Wilcoxen and Sarah Boon were married in North Carolina.

He died in Roane County, North Carolina after which she returned to Kentucky with her grandson, Jesse Boon Wilcoxen with whom she lived till her death which took place in the year 1814 at the age of about 97 yers.

Grandfather Samuel Wilcoxen married Anna Jordon the date we do not have, they were married in North Carolina and afterwards removed to Kentucky where he died in the year 1825 at the age of 72 years. Grandmother came to Illinois with my father and remained with us till she died in the year 1840 at the age of 84 years. Mother says she thinks Col Boon never visited Kentucky after settling in Missouri. The men whose names you mention as companions of Boon are familiar to my mother in connection to the name of Boon but she can give no historical account of them.

I take the libery of sending you the obituary of my father clipped from our county paper, there is one item left out, that should have been mentioed, that is he was a volunteer in the war of 1812.

Wishing you a great success in your undertaking, I subscribe myself

Jeremiah F. Willcoxen

Lyman C. Draper

* note....this would appear to be the first reply to a letter from Mr Draper with the one sent in a previous posting, a reply to a follow up letter.

The KY History Center in Frankfort, KY has the following letter sent to Lyman Draper by Jeremiah Wilcoxson/JF Wilcoxson in reply to a letter about Sarah Boone Wilcoxsons children:

The first letter is not dated nor noted where the writer was living at the time of the letter.......the second letter refers to Jeremiah F. Wilcoxson being the son of Elijah Wilcoxson so it appears the same man wrote both letters. The second letter is dated 1861 in Illinois, so this would appear to be the same time frame for this letter. I will put this letter first, then do the second letter in a different post.

Mr Draper
Dear Sir
I received your letter of the 5th instant and will preceed to answer your questions as nearly as Mother can remember as we are not in possession of the family record so far back.

1st Grandfather had six brothers and four sisters, all older than himself except one, his name was William. The names of the older ones were John, George, Isaac, DANIEL and Israel. Israel was killed by Indians at Boonesborough, Kentucky.

Elizabeth married Benjamin Cutbeard, Mary married a Walker, Rachel married William Bryant, Sarah married Thomas Hagans.

2nd Great Grandfather was a native of Wales.

3rd Uncle Jesse B. Wilcoxson lived in Madison County, KY, he is not living, he as been dead about thirty five years.

4th John Wilcoxens children are none living

5th Grandfathers brother, DANIEL, died in Kentucky but we do not know whether he is the one you refer to or not, we do not know anything of his family.

I do not remember to have heard father relate any important facts about Col Boone but what is generally known. I am no acquainted with Richard Osbourne, but I will make some inquiries after him and should go see him. I will do as you request.

Very respectfully yours

J.F. Wilcoxson

[I have written it as it appears in the letter, with the 1st, 2nd etc ]

I am not familiar with Virginia Jones' research. It is interesting that you mentioned that she did research in Fort Worth. I spent some time researching at the Fort Worth library in 2006. It is a fantastic place for genealogical research.

There is ample evidence that Samuel and Daniel Willcockson were NOT twins. Daniel's birthdate was 13 March, 1755 as you show, but Samuel Willcockson was born on 24 February, 1755 (according to the family bible of his grandson AND also Samuel's own ancient tombstone, which I have seen in St. Helens, KY. Samuel and Daniel were clearly not brothers--twins or otherwise.

Also, I have never found any evidence that John Willcockson and his brother, George, were "apprenticed" to Squire Boone. The Draper MSS contain evidence that both John and George were living in the same neighborhood as the Squire Boone family and were certainly acquainted with them prior to John Willcockson's marriage to Sarah Boone. If you have evidence of their apprenticeship to Squire Boone, please share it with me.

I am the grandaughter of Benjamin Rush Wilcoxson and have information on John Willcockson b.1720 (about) all the way up to my Mom, Phyliss Wilcoxson Brown. This information was researched in the 1980's by Virginia Gammons Jones. I know she used the Ft. Worth library for alot of her research as well as census records. I have 20 typed pages of her findings. John Willcockson was born about 1720, place and parentage unknown. He was apprenticed to Squire Boone, as was his brother, George. Evidence is that he had a sister, Hannah. On May 29,1742 in Berks co.,Pennsylvania, he married Sarah Boone, the daughter of Sqire and Sarah Morgan Boone. She was born June 7,1724 in or near New Britian, Berks Co., Pennsylvania. John and Sarah moved to Rowan County, North Carolina with the Boone family, where they converted to the Baptist faith. Later, they moved to Fayette County, Ky. John Willcockson was reputed to be killed by Indians about 1782. Sarah died in 1815 in Madison County, Ky. They were the parents of eleven children: John, George, Isaac, Elizabeth,Israel, Elizabeth,Israel,Rachel, Daniel, Samuel, Mary, William and Sarah. Daniel Wilcoxson and Samuel were twins, born March 13, 1755 in Rowan Co.,North Carolina. Daniel married Sara Faulkner, October 1780 in Fayette Co., Ky. Died June 16, 1837 in Shelby Co. Ky. Samuel (twin) married Anna Jordan. Died in November 1825. INFORMATION: "Boone Family" pp 105-107: Marriage bonds of Shelby Co., Ky.: "NATIONAL GENEALOGICAL QUARTERLY" vol. ? , p 133; "Wilcoxson & Allied Families"

Re: DAR documentation of John & Sarah Boone Wilcoxson to son, Daniel

Here is some information that I have put together regarding the parentage of the KY pioneer and soldier, Daniel Willcockson (1755-1837).

Many descendants of Daniel Willcockson (1755-1834) have erroneously placed him as a son of John and Sarah (Boone) Willcockson. This Daniel Willcockson, of Woodford and Shelby Counties, KY, who married Sarah Faulkner, was NOT the Daniel Willcockson, son of John and Sarah (Boone) Willcockson. Instead, this Daniel was a son of Isaac and Martha (Bane) Willcockson. This is proven by the following evidence.

A Rowan County, NC court records in 1771 stated that "William, DANIEL, and Martha Willcockson, minor orphans of Isaac Willcockson, deceased" chose Isaac Willcockson as their guardian. The Daniel Willcockson
described in this document was a minor in 1771, therefore he was not yet 21 years of age. From this information, we know that Daniel, son of Isaac Willcockson, was born after 1750. The Isaac Willcockson, who became the guardian of the orphan, Daniel, was in fact his older brother. This Isaac and his wife, Ruth, raised these three orphans. Following Isaac's death in 1783, Ruth continued to have a close
relationship with William, Martha, and Daniel.

According to Daniel Willcockson's pension application, he was born 13 March, 1755 in Rowan Co., NC. Less than one month before his birth, John and Sarah (Boone) Willcockson's tenth child, Samuel, was born on 24 February, 1755. The birthdate of Samuel is shown in the Bible of his
grandson, as well as on his tombstone. Based on this information alone, NO ONE should believe that Daniel and Samuel were brothers.

Daniel Willcockson's pension application also reveals that he enlisted in Capt. John Holder's Company in 1778. This company was involved in extensive service while protecting the frontier forts of Boonesborough and Bryan's Station. While in service, Daniel married Sarah Faulkner at Bryan's Station in October, 1780. In 1783, Daniel was discharged
from military service.

One of the stories which has survived concerning Daniel Willcockson while he was stationed at Bryan's Station was told by both George Bryan (in an interview with John Shane) and Isaac Wilson (in an interview with John Shane). The account by Isaac Wilson further identifies this Daniel Willcockson. Isaac Wilson was a son of Joseph and Martha (Willcockson) Wilson. Martha was one of the three
minor orphans of Isaac and Martha (Bane) Willcockson, and she was a sister of the Daniel Willcockson under study in this section. Isaac Wilson moved to Kentucky with his mother, Martha, and step-father, John Whitaker in 1784. His account states: "My UNCLE, Daniel Wilcox, was ploughing at Bryant's Station. Wilcox...saw the Indians taking after him. One of the Indians outran the rest and grabbed a part of Wilcox's shirt as he got over the fence. His wife stood and called to him to run." This evidence clearly identifies Daniel as the UNCLE of Isaac Wilson, and therefore a son of Isaac Willcockson, Sr.

After his discharge from military service in 1783, Daniel and Sarah (Faulkner) Willcockson moved to Woodford Co., KY. By 1784, Daniel's sister and brother-in-law, Martha (Willcockson) Whitaker and John Whitaker, had moved to Kentucky and they also settled in Woodford County. Both Daniel and his sister, Martha, owned land on Craigs Creek in Woodford County and several land records involved both Daniel and Martha's husband and children. It should be also noted that by 1795, Ruth Willcockson had moved from NC to Woodford Co., KY. Ruth was the widow of Isaac Willcockson (d.ca.1783), and had with her husband raised Daniel, Martha, and William Willcockson. It is understandable
that these familes would remain together.

Martha (Willcockson) Wilson Whitaker died ca.1798, presumably in Woodford Co., KY. In the early 1800's, Daniel Willcockson and Ruth Willcockson removed to Shelby Co., KY, where Daniel died on 16 June, 1837. Again the close relationship between the children of Isaac Willcockson, Sr. and Daniel Willcockson should emphasize that Daniel WAS a son of Isaac Willcockson, Sr.

In identifying DANIEL WILLCOCKSON (1755-1837), the husband of Sally Faulkner, the following pieces of information are important to consider:

(1) the land records linking this Daniel with Martha (Willcockson) Wilson Whitaker in Woodford Co., KY
(2) the obvious conflict between the birthdate of Samuel Willcockson and Daniel Willcockson
(3) the fact that Isaac Willcockson, Sr. had a son, Daniel, who was a minor in 1771 [thus born after 1750]
(4) the fact that Isaac Wilson [son of Martha (Willcockson) Wilson], in his John Shane interview, referred to this Daniel as "my UNCLE, Daniel Wilcox". Isaac Wilson knew his Uncle Daniel Wilcox quite well. In 1808, Isaac was a witness to a deed in which his uncle, "Daniel Wilcoxson" purchased land in Woodford Co., KY. Undoubtedly, Isaac Wilson had heard this story of Daniel's daring escape
directly from his Uncle Daniel Willcockson.

In looking at the recorded statements regarding Daniel Willcockson (died 16 June, 1837), there is ONLY ONE which conflicts with the evidence already cited that this Daniel was a son of Isaac Willcockson, Sr. This one record is the information provided by the Kentucky pioneer, George Bryan. It is therefore important and essential that an analysis and an evaluation of George Bryan's account be made.

In the 1840's, John Shane interviewed George Bryan at length regarding his memories of the early settlement of Kentucky. Bryan gave Shane a long list of names of those settlers who belonged to a group travelling from NC to KY in 1775-76. Curiously enough, instead of first naming himself and the other Bryans, George first names DAVID and DANIEL WILCOX--both of whom he calls nephews of "Col. Boon". Later, in this same interview, George Bryan gives his account of the escape of Daniel Willcockson from
the Indians at Bryan's Station. In this description, Bryan twice refers to ISRAEL and DANIEL WILCOX as COUSINS. Bryan also states that Daniel Wilcox was "a nephew of Danl. Boone". In evaluating this interview of George Bryan, the following should be taken into consideration.

(1) At the time of this interview in the 1840's, George Bryan was in his mid-80's and was recalling events which had taken place over 60 years before. Certainly, this does not necessitate that his recollections were incorrect, but it could make them questionable due to the great period of time involved.

(2) George Bryan was a son of Morgan Bryan, Jr. and a grandson of the famed Morgan Bryan, Sr.--patriarch of the Rowan Co., NC Bryan clan. Although, there were several intermarriages between the Boone and Bryan families, George Bryan was in no way related to the Willcockson family.

(3) In his account of Daniel Willcockson's escape from the Indians in 1781, Bryan added that "this was AFTER I had gone to Boone's Station". Yet, in a 1795 deposition, this same George Bryan stated that he had left Kentucky in 1780 and did not return until after 1782. It was not until AFTER 1783 that George Bryan joined the Boone's Station settlement. Thus, Bryan's own statements are in conflict. Either way, it is clear that George Bryan, himself, was NOT a witness to this escape of Daniel Willcockson [in fact, NO member of the Bryan family was at Bryan's Station at that time], but instead heard it at least second hand.

(4) Israel Willcockson was undoubtedly a child of John and Sarah (Boone) Willcockson. In the list of John and Sarah's children given by Jeremiah F. Wilcoxen [Draper MSS 23CC49] at his mother, Charlotte (Calloway) Wilcoxen's dictation, Israel is named with the note "Israel was killed by the Indians". This list of John and Sarah's children should be considered complete and correct due to the fact that Charlotte, herself, was a great-granddaughter of John and Sarah (Boone) Willcockson AND that she had married a grandson of John and Sarah. Although, Charlotte was only 6 when John Willcockson died, she was about 23 when Sarah (Boone) Willcockson died. There should be no doubt that Charlotte knew who John and Sarah's children were. S.A. Yates, another great-grandchild of John and Sarah (Boone)
Willcockson, also corresponded with Lyman Draper. In one of these letters, he mentioned the Indian's killing of Israel [whom S.A. called his grandfather, Samuel Willcockson's brother]. Accepting this, then either ISRAEL and DANIEL WILCOX were cousins [as George Bryan states] OR DANIEL was a nephew of Daniel Boone [as Bryan also states].
Both of these statements by George Bryan CANNOT be true.

(5) If the statements given to John Shane by George Bryan, who was NOT a Willcockson family member, are accepted completely, then one CANNOT accept the information provided by Willcockson family members such as Isaac Wilson, Charlotte (Calloway) Willcockson, and others.

The ONLY part of George Bryan's account which is in agreement with the evidences cited here is that Israel and Daniel Willcockson were COUSINS. The rest of Bryan's account concerning the Willcocksons is at the very least questionable and certainly doubtful in light of the above evidence.

William Wilcoxson - Nelly Galloway

My great-grandmother was Olevia Belle Wilcoxson (1870-1938) who was the daughter of Joseph Wilcoxson (1825-aft 1880) and Mary Elizabeth Forbis (1839-xxxx). Joseph was the son of William Wilcoxson (abt 1792-1835) and Nelly Galloway or perhaps Millie Galloway.

I believe, but have been unable to document, that William Wilcoxson was the son of William Red Wilcoxson (1757-1928) and Nancy Lewis Sparks (1757-1801).

Any information on Nelly Galloway or help with the connection of William Wilcoxson to William Red Wilcoxson and Nancy Lewis Sparks would be appreciated.
