Do you have Wiley Family Ties to Lancaster Co, PA?

On July 28, 1856 a John Wiley (1800-1870) purchased 149 acres and 13 perches in Conoy Township, Lancaster County, PA. His two sons Henry H. Wiley (1832-1897) and John E. Wiley (1834-1911) were executors of his estate.

The parcel John purchased is known as Locust Grove. It included a grist mill, saw mill, distillery and two story stone mansion today known as the Haldeman Mansion. The mansion sits on a rise overlooking the mouth of Conoy Creek, where it enters in to the Susquehanna River.

The Haldeman Mansion Preservation Society is reaching out to the descendents of all early owners of this historically significant property to seek, share and preserve relevant information. If you are researching the Wiley surname and believe your ancestors may have Locust Grove ties, please visit our website at www.haldeman-mansion.org. Be sure to checkout the “Locust Grove Timeline” for additional information on this Wiley Family.

We would be pleased to hear from you, to share information with you and have your support in preserving the historic accounts of this unique property.

WILEY, John; b. abt. 1615 in England > Reading, Massachusetts

GENEALOGICAL and PERSONAL MEMOIRS
Relating to the Families of Boston and Eastern Massachusetts
Prepared under the editorial supervision of William Richard CUTTER, A. M.
Historian of the New England Historic Genealogical Society; Librarian of Woburn Public Library; Author of “The Cutter Family,” “History of Arlington,” “Bibliography of Woburn,” etc., etc.
Volume I.; Illustrated
New York; Lewis Historical Publishing Company; 1908
Pages 180 - 181

WILEY

The surnames Wiley and Willey were originally used interchangeably in England, though the American families of Wiley mentioned below seem not related to the Willey families at all. Willy or Willey is derived like a host of other surnames from the personal name William. We might cite others - Williams, Williamson, Fitz-Williams, Wilkins, Wilcox, Wilmot, Billson, Tilson (William was once nicknamed Till as well as Bill) and Guillian, Gillett, etc., from the French Guillaume (William).

But the surname Wiley was derived from the name of a parish in Wiltshire. The Wiley coat-of-arms is: Argent three griffins passant sable. The Willey family in various parts of the country uses a modified form of this armorial and this seems to prove that originally the Wiley and Willey families were of the same stock. Wiley or Willey: Argent three griffins segreant in fess sable. Also argent three griffins segreant in fess sable between five trefoils slipped vert. The only crest found is: A rose bush vert bearing roses argent. The Scotch Wylie or Wiley family is especially numerous in the north of Ireland, Antrim county.

A number of the Wiley family immigrated to New England before 1650. Allen Willey was admitted to the church in Boston, November 9, 1634; Isaac Willey and wife Joanna were in Boston before 1640; she married, second, June 8, 1660, in Boston, Edward Burcham, of Lynn. Thomas Willey settled in Dover, New Hampshire, and a large family descended from a settler of this surname at New London, Connecticut.

(I) John Wiley, immigrant ancestor, was born in England about 1615. He settled in Reading Massachusetts, where his descendants have been prominent to the present time. He gave bonds in the general court, July 30, 1640. He was a proprietor in 1648. His wife Elizabeth was a member of the Reading Church in 1648, and she died August 3, 1662. He lived in "Little World" now called Woodville, Reading, and was one of the earliest settlers in that town. He died probably in 1672. Children: 1. John Jr. 2. Benjamin, married, 1707, Mary Nichols. 3. Elizabeth, born March 4, 1649. 4. Timothy, born April 24, 1653; mentioned below. 5. Susanna, born July 16, 1655; married, 1678, John Damon. 6. Sarah, born February 4, 1658.

(II) Timothy Wiley, son of John Wiley (I), was born in Reading, Massachusetts, April 24, 1653. He succeeded his father on the homestead and became a leading citizen, holding the offices of selectman and of deputy to the general court. He died in 1728. He married, first, in 1678, Elizabeth Davis, who died in 1695, daughter of George Davis. He married, second, 1697, Susanna _____. Children of first wife: 1. John, born 1679. 2. Elizabeth, 1681; died young. 3. Timothy, mentioned below. 4. Elizabeth, born 1690. Child of second wife: 5. Thomas, born 1697.

(III) Timothy Wiley, son of Timothy Wiley (2), was born 1688-92, at Reading; married, in 1714, Mary Poole, of Lynnfield. They lived at Woodville, Reading. Children, born at Reading: 1. Sarah, 1715. 2. Susanna, 1717, married, 1741, Isaac Smith. 3. Mary, 1721, married, 1745, Moses Bancroft. 4. Lydia, 1724, married, 1747, Adam Hawkes, of Lynnfield, ancestor of George L. Hawkes, Esq., of Lynnfield. 5. Timothy, 1724, married, 1748, Elizabeth Wiley. 6. John, 1727. 7. Nathaniel, mentioned below. 8. Phineas, 1731.

(IV) Nathaniel Wiley, son of Timothy Wiley (3), was born at Reading in 1729, died at Reading in 1822, aged ninety-three. He resided in Reading; married Mary Eaton, of Andover. Children, born at South Reading: 1. Timothy, 1749, married, 1781, Susanna Hay, of Stoneham. 2. Mary, 1756. 3. Nathaniel, 1759; mentioned below. 4. Phineas, 1761, married, 1783, Susanna Green. 5. Benjamin, 1763, married _____ Sherman, of Lynnfield. 6. Edmund, 1766, married, 1791, Nancy Edes. 7. Ephraim, 1768, was father of Rev. Ephraim, a Methodist minister. 8. Samuel, 1772, married, 1794, Eliza Vinton. 9. Eli, 1774, married first, Love Mansfield, and, second, Lucy (Tapley) Wiley.

(V) Nathaniel Wiley, son of Nathaniel (4), was born in Reading, 1759. Some of the revolutionary service of Nathaniel Wiley, of Reading, was his probably and the remainder his father's. His father turned out on the Lexington alarm, April 19, 1775, in Colonel David Green's regiment. He married, 1782, Sally Poole, daughter of Jonathan and Sarah (Eaton) Poole. He died in 1811, aged sixty-two years. He succeeded his father-in-law, Jonathan Poole, on the farm on Water street, South Reading, lately occupied by heirs of Leonard Wiley. Before Jonathan, his uncle, Benjamin Poole, owned this estate. Children born at Reading: 1. Sally, 1783, died in middle age unmarried. 2. Betsey, 1787, married John Upton, Esq., of Lynnfield. 3. Leonard, 1791, married, 1813, Sally, daughter of Edmund and Judith (Bancroft) Eaton; had the homestead. 4. Lot, 1794, died 1813 of typhoid fever. 5. Nathaniel, 1797, mentioned below. 6. Laura, 1799, died 1813. 7. Poole, 1802. 8. Aaron, 1805, went to sea and was lost probably, never returning or heard from.

(VI) Nathaniel Wiley, son of Nathaniel Wiley (5), was born in Reading in 1797, died at Stoneham or Woburn, Massachusetts. He lived at South Reading, now the town of Wakefield, Massachusetts. He married, 1820, Lydia Trull, born _____ at Burlington, died at Woburn. Children: 1. Henry P., born 1821, married Elvira Green. 2. John Adams, born February 1, 1825, mentioned below. 3. Lydia M., born 1828, died unmarried. 4. Augusta Ann, born 1830, died unmarried.

(VII) John Adams Wiley, son of Nathaniel Wiley (6), was born in Wakefield, Massachusetts, February 1, 1825. He was educated in the district schools and the academy at Woburn. He learned the trade of wheelwright and followed it for several years in Wakefield, Andover and North Andover. He entered the employ of the Davis & Furber Machine Company at North Andover and worked his way to a position of responsibility. He had charge of setting up the machinery sold by this concern, and in 1858 was admitted to partnership and continued this connection for a period of nearly fifty years. He took a prominent position in the manufacturing world and acquired wealth and distinction. He was a typical self-made man. His thorough knowledge of the business, his foresight and business sagacity, his strong and pleasing personality, his industry and progressiveness were the factors of his great success in life. No man in North Andover has won in his generation a greater degree of respect and confidence from his townsmen. He was liberal in his support of charity and has given evidence of breadth as well as strength of character. He died September 1, 1905, after a long, useful and successful career in business and public life. In politics he was an Independent. He was at one time representative to the general court and later state senator from his district, filling these important offices with credit to himself and the community. He attended the Congregational church. In 1865 when the church was built at the factory village he contributed five thousand dollars to the building fund. He was a director of the Pacific Bank.

He married, February 24, 1848, at Andover, Eliza R. Downing, born February 10, 1828, daughter of Samuel Downing. (See sketch of the Downing family). They had no children.

Re: George Washington Wiley family

My grandfather was Walter Bedell Wylie. My grandfather spelled his last name as Wylie instead of Wiley. My mother talked about her Aunt Maud. She also talked about another sister called Aunt Will. I remember my mother saying something about Maud marrying a fellow named Adams. Back in the 1960's we visited with one of Walters sister. I believe her name was Will and she lived down near the Texas border in a small town. Her son-in-law was the sheriff of this town. I did not write any of this information down and my mother, her sister and oldest brother are dead. The youngest son doesn't remember. I hope this might help and please let me know if you come up with any more information. Thanks. Aneta Love

Did William M. Wiley reside in No. La Junta, Otero, Coloradoin 1930? I have his death date 01/Apl/1931. If this is the same person, he may be the brother or uncle of my grandfather, Thomas Allen Wiley b:1868 d:1953. Several of the Wiley families moved to Colorado there is still a town named "Wiley". My sister visited there last year (2011). Not much but a wide spot in the road. We are decended from George W. Wiley and Catherine V. (Snyder) Wiley. Catherine was widowed and applied for Civil War Pension (cert. #813287, ) Per: Civil War Index 1861-1934.

I look forward to your response.
Barbara:

The Wiley yDNA surname project is done under the company Family Tree DNA or FTDNA. They have by far the largest participation and the largest database for comparing yDNA results. You can learn much by going to their website and/or by writing to me personally.

I am the volunteer Admin for three surname projects one of which is the Wiley project.

To test for yDNA you must be male since only males have the y-chromosome. This tiny portion of DNA is passed from father to son unchanged for many generations and so can be used to trace male lineage.

There are two other sorts of DNA testing that can be done as an aid in genealogical research and neither of those require being male! All three sorts are explained on the FTDNA website.

Please feel free to write me if you have any questions:

Jody Thomson
jmthomson57@gmail.com

Hi. I am trying to find out about Nancy's daughter, Mary. I have an old photo that belonged to my grandparents. On the back is some writing, but can't make all of it out. But one part has the name "Mary", and at the end, it is signed "Na, but is cut off. Two girls are on the front. The first part of the photo, which is actually a post card, is addressed to the sister of who sent it. If you have any info on Nancy's daughter Mary, or what she looked like, please let me know. Nancy was the sister of my great grandma, Delana Wiley. Thank you, Cheryl Bayes-Prichard

This is where the evidence has lead us to be true. euzelle wiley was born in raleigh, nc. he had a son named bruce. bruce married dorothy mathis from staten island, ny. they settled in manhattan and had a son named bruce jr. bruce jr married inez sampson. they had dorothy (dottie, bruce 3rd (bunny) jimmy (deceased) and my dad, michael. bruce jr and inez did not stay together long. My granny inez remarried walter sills and had two more children. none of bruce jr's children talk about their dad much as walter, the grandfather I know, treated them as his own. My brother's and i traced this info through my nanny dorothy wiley (mathis. Lessie burt (mother is harriett)is listed as bruce senior's mother and husband to euzelle wiley on dorothy and bruce jr's marriage certificate. we di hear of a warren wiley but could not find him. what is weird is the census' from the 1930's listed a euzelle jr. and there are a lot of mispelled names. we did trace lessie and euzelle to lakewood, nj but the trail went cold there. hope this helps and maybe you have more info u can share. steph wiley

Hi Shan,

Well not to long ago I found his two children before me on facebook and have continued contact with one of them since then. I was finally able to talk to my mother a little more on this and did a little more research and he was in California in 1983 because my other half siblings were born 1982 and 1984. So i'm thinking that they might not be the same person. But keep me posted if you find anything with this type of situation anything is possible. :-) Thank you for responding!

Catherine Wiley marr. Edwin Porritt, Ottawa/Carleton, July 1870 or 1871

Looking for record of marriage of Edwin Porritt and Catherine Wiley (variously spelt Whiley, Wylie) in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada in July of either 1870 or 1871.

Have very little info on Catherine. According to various census records she was born about 1851 in Ontario, Canada. Her mother may have been Mary Wiley who was a 45 yr old widow living with Edwin and Catherine in 1871 Census of Canada. Catherine is described as Irish origins, roman catholic; which is interesting as Edwin is listed as Church of England.

Edwin Porritt was born 6 Apr 1847 in Bradford, Yorkshire to Joseph Porritt and Margaret Wilby. The 1861 census of Canada shows the family in Aylwin/Ottawa East. The 1871 census of Canada shows Edwin and Catherine living in West Ottawa/Hull area and having been married in July "within the past 12 months", so either 1870 or 1871. They appear in the 1881 census of England living in Dewsbury, Yorkshire with children Joseph, Mary Margaret, Catherine B., and Edwin J., all of whom were born in Canada.

I have not been able to find any record of this marriage on Ancestry.com nor on familysearch.org. Does anyone have this line or access to marriage records in the Ottawa/Hull area? Also looking for any information on Catherine's birth, baptism, and parents. She was born about 1851 in Ottawa, Ontario according to census records.

Re: Ancestors of Aquilla Wiley husband of Hannah Warren

I finished a Sampson genealogy this summer for my mother. I enjoyed reading your posting because it mirrors what I found out and also the conclusions I drew. I wondered about the Thomas Sampson connection too. My research lists a Richard Sampson, B-1695; and one of my first written comments is that the Wyles, Sampsons, Rutledges, Almonys and Pococks all lived close together, were listed on the same census, had big families and married the neighbors. I trace my roots through Isaac Sampson and Mary Ristone (Royston). Then it's their son Abraham and Elizabeth (Rutledge)Sampson, and they're living in Mine Run Hundred. Abraham's son Isaac and wife Kezia Pocock both lived and died in Maryland.

Their son David is my direct lineage, and his brothers Daniel S. and Israel eventually made their way (along with David) to Hancock County, Ohio. David married Juliet Ann Eaton, and their children were Isabella, Aquilla (my maternal great-grandfather, and Lanor (who died at about age 17 and is buried along with lots of Sampsons in Mt. Blanchard, Ohio.)

There are also Henry County and then Fulton County, Ohio connections before some of the Sampsons land near Morenci, MI. Aquilla Sampson married Mary C. Fahl in 1879. He had been born in Baltimore and she in Hancock County, Ohio. They had children Ann, Goldie, Guy, Edward L., FAHL (my grandfather who died 2 years before I was born), Howard B., Olleen, and Willis W. Aquilla died of pneumonia and Mary died of toxic goiter; they are both buried in Oak Grove Cemetery, Morenci, MI.

Fahl Sampson married Prussia Grace Whaley, and they had two daughters, Mary Emma (Sampson) Smith and Kathryn Bie (Sampson)Marlatt; the latter is my 85 year-old-mother. My grandparents are buried, along with lots of Sampsons, in Oakgrove Cemetery, Morenci, MI. Mom married James Marlatt, and I am the eldest child of three, with a sister Jerolyn and a brother Michael. I researched both the Whaley and Sampson sides of my family for my mother, and she has enjoyed the reading of those "story-like genealogies." I am willing to share this information if you would wish to see it.

Re: George Wiley

I am a descendant of George Wiley (b. Abt. 1813 in Ohio) and Catherine Snyder (b. Abt 1820 in Maryland). They had the following children: William, Allen, John, Catherine, George W., Robert, Martin, Henry, David, Nancy, and Andrew. Their son William Wiley born June 16, 1839, in Iowa, and died April 1, 1931, in North La Junta, Colorado and was buried in Walters, Oklahoma, is my 2nd great-grandfather.

William married Catherine (Katharine) Renner (b. January 4, 1840, in Tennessee, and died April 9, 1925, in North La Junta, Colorado and is buried in Walters, Oklahoma) on December 25, 1861 in Wise County, Texas. William and Catherine had the following children: Sarah Florence, Martha "Mattie" Murneva, Thomas Allen, John Anderson, Susan Arena Jane, Mary Elizabeth, Nina Margaret, Leona, William Marvin, Etty Belle, Sally Emma, and Dovy Catherine Wiley. Their son John Anderson Wiley is my great-grandfather.

John Anderson Wiley married Lula Caroline "Callie" Ballard. They had the following children: LJ, Floyd Wesley, Loyd William, and Orval V. Wiley. Floyd and Loyd are twins. Their son Floyd Wesley Wiley is my grandfather.

Floyd Wiley married Lorene Melinda Cox. They had the following children: Jackie "Jack" Wesley, and Dee Jess Wiley. Their son Dee Jess Wiley is my father.

I have information on alot of family members: spouses, children, dates, and burials.

I know my dad loved going and visiting Thomas Allen Wiley and his wife Elizabeth Josephine Casey (Creasy). My dad referred to them as Uncle Tom and Aunt Elizabeth. His Aunt Elizabeth knew how to remove any warts he had.

My dad also talked about his Aunt Sally (Sally Emma Wiley), she married James Franklin "Frank" Patton. They had two sons: Kermitt Clifford, and Eldred Franklin Patton. When Frank died, Sally then married Henry Mortimer "Mort" Williams. They had one son: Dwight Dean Williams. My dad told me his Aunt Sally had one glass eye (that she would take out on occasion) and she was quite a character.

Wiley, Mary/Frederick County Maryland/Parents?

I have hit a wall. I have a Mary Wiley marrying my several times great grandfather John McDaniel IN Maryland on 11/3/1819. I have found another reference to her that says "Elizabeth" Possibly Mary Elizabeth Wiley? Born around 1795 or even 1791 and died approximately 1840.

He (John McDaniel) is buried here in Ohio and was in the war of 1812. My research shows he traveled frequently between Ohio and Maryland. She is not buried with him so I assume she is there in Maryland, but have not found her on findagrave.com.

I am trying to find her parentage as I kind of stop at her. Perhaps because she came here from elsewhere??? Her son Samuel was born around 1819 there in Frederick County as well, but he too is buried here in Ohio with his father.

If you have her on your family tree, please let me know! Thanks!
