William Henry Wilkinson - Kansas

I am looking for information on my grandfather, William Henry Wilkinson who died in Kansas sometime sometime between 1927 (the year his last child was born)and 1930, though I found him here listed as dying in 1936, which cannot be correct because I found the 1930 census listed his 2nd wife as a widow. And I know from family stories that my father was still a child when his father died. And 1936 would have put Dad at 21. So I'm certain that 1936 is incorrect.

William Henry Wilkinson, b.1869 Ohio, was the son of William Rapier (Rapien?)Wilkinson.
Married Mary E. Wilkinson b.1869 Ohio, had 3 children.
2nd wife Jennie Brooking b.1889 Kansas, had 7 children, including my father William Henry (Hank) Wilkinson b.20 Sept.1915, in Caney, Kansas.

I had assumed that Mary E. Wilkinson, his first wife, died, but I also found her alive in Kansas in the 1930 census. But some of her children seem to have lived with his 2nd family early on since they are listed in the family home in the 1910 census, though my dad had very vague memories of his only brother Marvin from his dad's marriage to Mary E.

Also, the family story goes that William Henry was possibly killed because he was Jewish. But I also heard he was found slumped over his car wheel dead, or that he was in some sort of car accident. To my knowledge we were never Jewish, and Dad was raised Methodist.

I wish I had been a few years older, I would have known how important it was to gather as much family history as possible while Dad and his sisters were alive.

At least I do have one vague memory of Jennie Brooking Wilkinson, my grandmother, babysitting me when I could not be more the 3yrs old. She had to have been in her eighties at the time.

I would like to find out when/how my grandfather died and any information about his 1st wife.

Any information in solving these inconsistancies would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you, B. Wilkinson-Stuller

Beverley, We are certainly relatives because I have the same ancestors.
I'm attempting to let all relatives know that I am preparing a 2nd edition of the George Allen Wadsworth - Pilley to Panaca book for Jul 2012. If you have any additions or corrections, I'd be glad for the help. The general query I'm putting out follows. Do contact me.

I am preparing a second edition of the award-winning history, George Allen Wadsworth – Pilley to Panaca, for the Lafe and Dollie Wadsworth reunion Jul 2012 in Panaca, Nevada.
A brief pedigree chart showing ten new generations of Wadsworths and Steads and many new surnames such as Mitchell, Heely, Thornhill, Kindard, Rhodes, Turner, Wilkinson, Hill, Hutchinson, Swinnerton, Beal, and Elam, all in or near Penistone, Yorkshire, England are mentioned.
New surnames found on Elizabeth Broadbent Wadsworth’s line include Armrood, Stainforth, France, Senior, Tyler, Beardshall, Broomhead, Bright, and Parkin of Sheffield, Yorkshire, England and environs.
New historical materials include a description of life on the ship “Horizon” in 1856 and charts showing how the Wadsworths learned to tame their part of the early American West. A chapter on the life of “Uncle James” Wadsworth will amaze.
Another new section provides some historical information on some of George Allen Wadsworth’s siblings and Aunts and Uncles with pictures of tombstones and towns of interest in Yorkshire, England.
I invite all to send new, updated, differing, but always documented data to be added to this one and only 2nd edition of the book.
When the book is completed it will be available at www.itsallrelatives.net.
Paul,
Now, I'm totally confused. I do not believe that the Isabel from Cambridge Mass is our Isabel from Groton. Our Isabel was also "of Lynn" Mass. according to the records, as was her husband prior to removing to Groton. According to Pope's "Pioneers of Mass", Isabel Wilkinson, widow of Cambridge died Feb. 23, 1655. Edward Winship and Edward Goffe married her daughters. She was a proprietor in Cambridge 1637-8. So the Isabel of Newcastle is not ours. I expect someone someday will be able to track back our Isabel to someplace in
England, but it won't be me. I have a full plate. Thank you for all your hard work; if you come up with anything else, I would appreciate knowing.
Martha

Hi Martha,
I've learned that the widow Isabel Wilkinson immigrated with another daughter in addition to Margaret. Her name was Jane Wilkinson, and she married Edward Winship who immigrated in 1635. "He married first Jane Wilkinson, daughter of Isabel Wilkinson. He married second Elizabeth Parke in 1657.” And, "Isabel Wilkinson, widow, Cambridge, propr. 1637-8. Edward Winship ... married her daughter. (Jane)” http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/c/a/r/Donna-Carpe...

And while there is the possibility she originated in Ruddington, Yorkshire, about 2 miles south of Nottingham, there is this indication she could have come from in or near Newcastle-Upon-Tyne. From a page about the Cutter family we have this:

“In the church records of Cambridge the widow Elizabeth is mentioned as "Old Goodwife Cutter," and in a statement made by her she says that she was born in a small place, without church, near Newcastle-upon-Tyne; that she "knew not" the name of her father, who is supposed to have died during her infancy, but her mother sent her, when she was old enough, to Newcastle, where she was placed in a "godly family," and remained about seven years and then became member of another household where religious privileges were less. After the death of her husband she was sent to Cambridge, New England, and "came thither in a time of sickness and through many sad troubles by sea." She had with her in Cambridge, a sister or sister-in-law, widow Isabella Wilkinson, who doubtless came from Newcastle.”
The link to that information is: http://dunhamwilcox.net/me/me_bio_cutter.htm

So there are possible clues to pursue, but it will require research. Clearly she was in close contact with Henry of Nottingham who calls her "cousin" in his will. She could have been a cousin of his with the same, or different last name, or she could be a cousin by marriage, her having married his cousin (Unknown) Wilkinson.

If there are answers to Isabell's identity and origin they must lie in the church and legal records of the Nottingham area, and perhaps New Castle-Upon-Tyne. That search is beyond my current expertise I'm afraid.

All the best,
Paul

I have Richard's birth as about 1617 Puddingham, England. He died Dec. 7, 1683 in Groton Mass (Groton Epitaphs) Church record says Oct. 7.He was an original proprietor of Groton.
Henry Wilkinson was of Nottingham, England and in his will remembers numerous relatives in Roudington and also "my cousin" Isabel Blood in NE whom he left three pounds. It is thought that James, John, Robert and Richard Blood were all undoubtedly related, all from the vicinity of Nottingham and although closely associated, the exact relationship remains proven. The Wilkinson will proves that Richard was in NE as early as 1642 although his name does not appear in the records until June 1648
Martha

Thankyou Martha, that is very helpful.

That would explain why one of the documents available is the request to the court for support of Isabell by Josheph Parker who married their daughter Hannah Blood. In it he explains that Isabell is 99, and blind, and without resources and is asking for help with her. It was filed in 1705. (Though that would mean she was born in 1606 rather than 1621, and would have married a much younger Richard Blood. Or Richard Blood was born closer to her birthdate which would mean John Blood, b. 1606 was a brother or other relative rather than his father.) Other information on Isabell had her dying in 1692, but that would be the other Isabell.

This means we don't know the maiden name of Isabell, though she had married someone named Wilkinson in England and had a daughter by him named Margaret before he died. And she was certainly not a daughter of Henry. She might be related on some in-law basis if the Wilkinson she had married was from that family.

Henry did have a daughter named Isabell, but according to a Ken Wilson, who runs a site for the genealogy of that whole vicinity in England, Henry and his wife, and all their children, including Isabell, remained in England and didn't go to America. I've just written him about this wondering if any of the Wilkinsons of that period married an Isabell, and who died around 1640. Of course there are probably many other Wilkinson families in England she could have married into.

Thanks again. No progress on who she was, but some on who she wasn't, and at least things are getting sorted out.

On Richard, I'd found widly varying dates on his birth. Do you haapen to know which might be correct?

Thanks,
Paul

I too am descended from this union through James. According to information that my mother compiled long ago, there were two Isabelle Wilkinson's in the Bay Colony early. No connection between the two has been found. Some believe that the other Isabel Wilkinson may have been a niece of Henry. This other individual was known as the widow Isabel Wilkinson of Cambridge and was still living in 1705, apparently.
Isabell Wilkinson, b. 1621 - Help

Isabell Wilkinson married Richard Blood in Groton, MA, on Nov. 25, 1642. They had 11 children, and I'm descended from Nathanial. According to many sites Isabell was born in Nottinghamshire, England, and was baptised Jan. 6, 1621. In gathering information on my immigrant ancestors I ran into this in a Goffe tree. (Immigrant Edward Goffe married 2nd Margaret Wilkinson.)

"His wife, Margaret Wilkenson , was born in England and came to America with her mother when an infant; her mother, Isabel Wilkenson , was the only woman who came alone to the Boston colony; she was a woman of means, and she and her husband had been intending to come to America , when he suddenly died and she came alone." (No source for this information was included.)

I've been unable to find any other mention of this anywhere so far. Margaret is NOT among the names of the children she had with Richard Blood. But if this is true, and she immigrated with her infant daughter Margaret, then Wilkinson would NOT have been Isabell's maiden name. And in spite of the fact that she is widely identified as the daughter of Henry Wilkinson, b. 1588, and Mary Watkinson, b. 1692, these would not have been her parents.

I would have thought that if she was the only woman to have come alone, it would be a more widely known story.

Does anyone have any additional knowledge about this? Was there a Wilkinson marriage in England to an Isabell, yielding a daughter Margaret, where the widowed mother and infant daughter migrated to America?

Thanks for any help or advise about this problem,
Paul

Clara Emma Wilkinson was my great grandmother. She was born in Holloway, Middlesex, England in Oct1892. She was a domestic servant to an Italian family in North London (Islington or Highbury) possibly called Graziola or something similar. She fell pregnant by one of the family she worked for and gave birth to my grandfather Luigi on 31 Jul 1914 at Middlesex Hospital Marylebone London. His birth was not registered until 1918 when she married ex soldier John Chambers.

Luigi Chambers was a butchers apprentice and carried his nickname "Butch" until he died in Nov 1987. He joined the Royal Air Force in 1939 and eventually retired from the RAF in the 1960s when he joined Hawker Siddeley (aircraft manufacturers, later taken over by British Aerospace) at Hatfield in Hertfordshire.

I would be very grateful for any information on the Italian family for whom Clara Wilkinson worked when she fell pregnant.

Many thanks and kind regards
Shaun

Bernard Lee Wilkinson 1873-1951 Chesterfield Co VA

One of my GGGrandparents is Garner Vaden Fergusons (1799-1875) and his wife Virginia “Very Anne” Vaden (1793-187?). I have studied this family in great detail. They had 4 known daughters and also 1-2 currently unknown ones:
Julia A Ferguson (1828-1878) married John W Bottom (1823-?)
Amanda K Ferguson (1829-~1880) married John P Farley (1822-~1880)
Virginia W Ferguson (1833-1883) married William T Bottom (1837-1892)
Elizabeth Abbitt Ferguson (1834-1904) married Edward T Clayton (1824-1912)
When I studied this family several years ago I had not found the death notice of Julia A Ferguson and did not know about her. There are 5 Ancestry Trees that include Virginia Annie Bottom b.abt 1878 that married Bernard Lee Wilkerson and had a son Walter Vernon Wilkinson b.1905. Several of them mistakenly list her as the dau of William T Bottom and Virginia W Ferguson just as I had done. This is not correct. I am sending this Msg to every Author of an Ancestry Tree that includes Virginia Annie Bottom (19 Sep 1877 – 8 Aug 1971) no matter which Ancestry is listed hoping it might prove useful. The mistake I had made several years ago (and I believe that several others have also made) is that the 1880 Census of William T Bottom & Virginia W Ferguson Bottom clearly says that their daughter Annie V Ferguson b.1878 is Adopted. Thus, the ancestry of William T Bottom as shown by several could not possibly apply to Annie Virginia Bottom b.1878.
However the reality is that this Virginia Annie is not the Mother of Virginia Annie Bottom who married Bernard Lee Wilkinson. If you note the 1880 Census of John W Bottom and Julia A Ferguson Bottom of Dale, Chesterfield Co VA that lists John W Bottom 58, Willie W 23, Minnie L 11, and Jennie A 2 and this family can be found in 1870 in Dale, Chesterfield Co VA of John W Bottom 48, Julia A 42, Isabella 19, William 14, Minnie 1. John W Bottom 38, Julia A 32, Isadel P 10 and Willie 4 are listed in the 1860 Census of Southern, Chesterfield Co VA and the 1850 Census of Lower, Chesterfield Co., VA John Bottom 27, Julia 22, Irode? O 9/12 in the household of John’s probable father Thomas Bottom 62.
Julia A Bottom died 1 June 1878 (Chesterfield Co VA Deaths 1853-1912). Sometime after Census of 1880 John W Bottom remarried to a Susan ? b.abt.Apr 1830 and he died sometime between 1880 and 1900 because his son Willie W Bottom b.Apr 1856 was living in Dale, Chesterfield Co VA with his Step-Mother Susan b.Apr 1830 and his SISTER Virginia A Bottom b.Sept 1878. And combined with the 1900 Census record previously, the most important record of all, 1910 Census of Dale, Chesterfield Co VA Willie W Bottoms 54, SISTER Virginia A Wilkinson 32, Brother-in-law Bernard L Wilkinson 37, and Nephew Walter Wilkinson 5.
These records show definitely that Virginia W Bottom b.19 Sept 1877, mother of Walter Vernon Wilkinson b.19 Mar, 1905 was the daughter of John W Bottom (1823-?) and Julia A Ferguson.
Fyi also… Eddie Vaden who has been considered by most to be the basic resource on Vaden genealogy of Chesterfield and Henrico Co’s of VA made 2 mistakes in his work, one of which involves this family. Virginia “Very Anne” Vaden, the wife of Garner Vaden Ferguson was not the daughter of Marshall Vaden and his wife Aponella. On 16 April 2007 I posted a “position paper” on the Vaden Ancestry board that shows based on Census records of Marshall Vaden in 1810, 1820, and 1830 it is impossible for that to be the case. Marshall was the witness to the marriage of Garner and Virginia, but was not her Father. If one studies the marriages of thousands of early 1800’s of VA, it is also very seldom the case that the Witness was the Father of the bride.
Thomas Wilkinson and Elizabeth Lydall----Debunked

There must be thousands of Wilkinson lineages that have Thomas Wilkinson and Elizabeth Lydall as the two who started a Wilkinson line in Virginia. It is not true. The story goes Thomas and Elizabeth had two or three children Eliza, Thomas and John. Thomas supposedly received a grant of 6000 acres in the northern neck. A Thomas Wilkinson did receive land, but not the husband of Elizabeth Lydall and supposed father of Thomas Wilkinson who married Ann Izard.

SOURCE: Genealogies of Virginia Families from the William & Mary College Quarterly ... By Virginia page 874
B180
Fitzhugh ag’t Burwell ( This William Fitzhugh willed the land to his son)
Wilkinson, Thomas died with a will dated 25 April 1688. He had obtained a patent June 8 1662 for 6000 acres which was formerly granted to him by patent dated June 10, 1658. He was survived by his widow Ann who afterwards married Goodell and had an only daughter Hannah Goodell who married William Thomas, who by deed dated 26 October 1692, sells to William Fitzhugh, whose son is the lessor of the plantiff.
Thomas and Ann had issue: a daughter:
1.Eliza Wilkinson who died under 14 years of age.

Some have even assigned this will to him, which is for the Thomas above.
Book: Duplicates of Lost Colonial Virginia Records (pp 264-5)
Will of Thomas Wilkinson of Matson Parish county York, dated April
23, 1668, proved 26 Oct 1668 submitted for recording in Stafford Co., Va. 8 Nov
1682
My lands at the head of the Potomac Creek to my wife and daughter Eliza Wilkinson,
to be divided equally between them when my daughter my daughter reached the age
of 14. My wife to have full estate if my daughter dies. Wife Ann to serve as
Executrix. Witnesses: Robert Cobbs William Farmer

Elizabeth Lydall Wilkinson is given a death date of 06 Feb 1687 St Peters Parish, New Kent, Virginia, USA., but it is not the Elizabeth Lydall.

Thomas Wilkinson is found in James City VA in 1667. He marries Elizabeth Springall Dickerson after the death of her husband Griffith Dickenson before 1673. She has 3 grown sons and is about 45 years old. There doesn’t appear to be issue from this marriage. Elizabeth Springall Wilkinson dies St Peter’s Parish New Kent on 06 Feb 1687. This is the date that many researchers use for Elizabeth Lydall Wilkinson. Thomas then marries Ann Izard after the death of Elizabeth. Apparently, the dates for Ann Izard’s birth are wrong since she had two sons George and John in 1693 and 1698. ( St Peters Parish register). It is possible that Thomas was married and had children prior to his marriage to Elizabeth Dickerson.

January 5, 1656 - James City Co., VA:
Griffith Dickenson patented 300 acres in James City County on south west side of Moses Creek on the northerly branch of Tomahack [Tomahund?] Cr. above Nickatounces quarter, bounded as follows: southerly Capt. Bennett Freeman, William Wolfes, westerly on Wm. Hichman's land, northerly on William Phillips land and easterly toward the said Griffith Dickinson's 200 acres on Moses Creek. For transportation of six persons, himself twice, Elizabeth Dickenson, Wm. Jones, and Susan Crotch. (Patents 4, page 73)
[This indicates that Griffith already owned 200 acres of adjacent land. Tomahund Creek is located on the north side of the James River near the mouth of Chickahominy River in current Charles City County.]
March 3, 1656 - Surry Co., VA (formed from James City Co. in 1652):
Reference to suit of Griffeth Dickson against Charles Gregory. John Shell by deed.
May 3, 1656 - Surry Co., VA:
Jno. Baldwin & Griffith Dickson have a
suit, want Roger Stanton to defer it to the next court. (Surry County Records 1652-1663)
June 26, 1656 - Surry Co., VA:
Griffeth Dickenson listed with '335 pounds left in books of Major John Westhorpe, decd left in the hands of Capt. Wm. Thomas at his goeinge for England'. (Surry County Records
1652-1663, page 86)

December 16, 1664 - Surry Co., VA:
These are to Sertifie [certify] whome itt may Concerne that I subscribed doe Entreate my friend Capt. Pitman. 'The debt was made by my predecessor Griffin Dickinson.' Also confess judgement in my behalf to Wm. Wabard.
May 28, 1673 - New Kent Co., VA (formed from York County in 1654):
Minutes of Council and General Court of New Kent refer to 'the difference between Thomas Wilkinson as marrying the relict of Griffith Dickeson and Wm. Towne is referred to the next county court of New Kent, who are to determine the difference.'
[This indicates that Griffith Dickenson died prior to 1673 and his widow(Elizabeth Springall) had married Thomas Wilkinson.]
November 20, 1683 - James City Co., VA:
Thomas Wilkerson granted 554 acs. whereon he now dwells on south side of Moses Creek from head of the western most branch of Ware Gutt to Halie's cor., along Phillips line to Hawkes Nest Gutt and, ... being a part of a devident formerly held by Griffin Dickinson.
April 26, 1684 - James City Co., VA:
Mr. James Haley received land including 100 acs. being part of 300 acs. granted to Griffith Dickinson 5 Jan 1656 who assigned to John Shell 11 Apr. 1656.
February 6, 1688 - New Kent/James City Counties, VA - St. Peter's Parish:
Elizabeth, the wife of Thomas Wilkinson, died. (Vestry Book of St.Peter's Parish, New Kent and James City Co.)
[This is Elizabeth Springall who married Griffith Dickenson on June 12, 1649 in London and Thomas Wilkinson after her husband died)
Port of London to Virginia January 1634 John Springall aboard the Bonaventure, master James Ricrofte.

Source: http://www.dickinson.cc/individual.php?pid=I1283&ged=tre...

Hope this helps

Melissa Boyen
