Houelette/Richer Mariage of Chazy/Beekmantown, NY

I found the Church marriage notification of Louis Houelette for Aug. 9, 1854 (rather illegible) but after years I noticed the use of the name Valentin applied to the bride-to-be's(Reine Richer)Mother Julie. I have never seen that name before. I thought her Mother was Julie Gregoire. Did I have the wrong lead all this time? The grooms Mother is Angile Houelette and lives with her son John in 1860 Census (Mary)in Chazy and with her son Louis(Andrew J.)in the 1870 Census(Mary A.)in Chazy. She was 83 years then and I haven't found a death reference. Hopefully someone can help me with that. I have no name for the groom's Father except in Louis(Andrew)Willett death certificate in Lowell, Ma. It states that his Father is Noel, I have been unable to locate any information on that either. His Mother is Marie Levesque. I'm letting all my info to date confuse me and hope someone with more knowledge and understanding can help me. Sorry if this is TMI. Thank you, Thank you!!

Over a decade later, have you found your answers? Were they in Alabama? I have Florence Elizabeth Willett who
married Edmond Womble in 1857 in Coosa Co. AL. Willett and Womble is an unusual name combination, so I wonder if they are the same families. According to someone who posted on this board, Florence was a daughter of Jeremiah Willett (b 1815) and Sarah Lowe (buried at Titus in Elmore Co. AL).

Hi Barbara. Nothing really more than what I've already shared with you. You might also try John Stillwell, M.D.'s five volumes of "Historical and Genealogical Miscellany." If I recall correctly there is ample information there on the family. You can also try Monmouth Families by Ann P Miles.

I am not able at this time to give you much information on the Willet(t)'s that stayed in NY. Thomas & John (my line), sons of Thomas & Abigail, left NY in 1768 when they purchased 300 acres in Nutswamp, NJ. (Possibly bringing their mother with them as she died here in February of that year)

Good luck!
Stacey

I am looking for any information that may pertain to Elizabeth Willett nee Wilson or their three children (Stanley, Elizabeth, and Loretta). They may have lived in Kentucky or Cincinnati, Ohio. I am Elizabeth Willet's grandson from her first marriage to William Burd. Specifics I would like to have are when Elizabeth and Dayton married, Elizabeth's birth year, her place of birth, and her mother's maiden name. However, any information would be very much appreciated. Dayton was from Maysville, Mason county Kentucky.
Warren (Guy) Gaddis

I believe that I am a descendant of Thomas Willett who died at Middletown in 1764 and his wife Abigail Stevenson through their son Thomas who married an Ann Unknown. Do you have information on the children of Thomas Willett and Abigail Stevenson who lived most of their lives at Westchester County, New York and their descendants?

My dad was Frank Freeland Farrand and his mother was Helena Willett Alger (1870 to 1929), wife of Frank Farrand. Her mother was Helena Willett Freeland (1846 to 1879), wife of Charles Alger. Charles Alger was the son of Charles Coffey Alger (1809 to 1874) who became rich in the iron business in Stockbridge, Massachusetts and Hudson, New York.

I'd love to have a look at your family information and tree etc. I am still not 100% sure of my James' parents. He did marry a "Jane" last name was Lyles???or something like that name appears on one of their daughter's birth certificates. But then in later census James seems to have died and the girls[ Jane, Frances and Harriett] have their mother's name listed as "Elizabeth" . So it is a bit of a mystery to me still. Was Jane now calling herself Elizabeth or??? what? Anyway maybe you family info can help me sort this all out . There does seem to be alot of "James Willetts" about ..to add to the confusion . My email address is: pauline_braaksma@msn.com I live in Canada .

Hi Pauline

Have just been researching the Willett part of my family tree and I think we might have some common ancestry. The most likely marriage for your James Willett is I think to a Jane Jeffery b 1828 Ballspond, London(per 1861 Census) but birth not traced. James was born 21 Jun 1807 Reigate - one of 10 Children to James Willet b 1777 Reigate and Mary Merrill b 1781 Reigate and married at Winchester on 21 Jun 1802. The bible record of the births of James b 1777 children has been handed down to me - a rough sheet torn out from the bible and written up from approx 1803 to 1828. I can let you have a tree which sets out the family as best I can and can copy various documents including some miniatures (pictures)of the Willetts which go back to the early 1800s. Its best if give me your email address and then I can attach documents.

I am descended on my maternal side from James b 1807 next older brother William b 29 Nov 1804. He had a family of 7 in Reigate but fell on hard times and a number ended up in the Workhouse and ultimately moved north to Manchester working in the cotton industry where they married and most of my ancestry originated there. I have the family bible record of William's family as well. Was aware that a number of Willetts were Bakers and tried to see of there was still a Willetts Bakers in Reigate!

My great grandmother kept contact with some of the Willets up to the 1940s and paid a visit to Reigate in 1928 - all quite interesting and I have some letters etc and I will at some stage do some local research there through the parish records.

Have seen your tree on ancestry and copied that into my tree.

I do not have a tree on ancestry but have a very large private tree on Family treemaker and am very happy to share relevant parts with you.

Am interested to learn if any other Willets emigrated at that time and if you have photos of the early Willetts.

Kind regards
Simon Pickford
Birmingham UK

Very interesting . Thanks for all that information . I do stand corrected. By the way there does seem to be a lot of them out there in this world. Truly amazing as I found out when I began my family research. Just when you think you have a rare or unusual surname you find out they are all over the place!! Still searching for the birth mother of my great grandmother Frances Willett born in London, England around 1856-58 ,daughter of a James Willett. Her mother seems to be Jane [Lyles?] in early census but later census report her mother's name as Elizabeth . Who knows?!! Can't seem to find a marriage record of her father and mother. I believe James was from Reigate . And from a family of bakers as he was.

Willetts of French Canadian descent often *did* begin as Ouellettes --although generally Catholic, rather than Protestant. Their immigrant ancestor was Rene Houalet, believed to hale from Paris.

Early Willett immigrants from the UK to the New World are not even remotely related to the Quebecois Ouellettes, based on DNA evidence and such documents as have survived.

Surnames only became common in England after the Norman Conquest of 1066, and the earliest variants of the Willett family name date from that period. Whether any given family was actually of Norman origins, or simply adopted the naming conventions of the invaders, is difficult to determine.

French Protestants were widely dispersed throughout the more tolerant nations of Europe, including Germany, Austria, Switzerland, the Netherlands, and all of the British Isles. Records of the Huguenot community in London are fairly extensive; less so in other settlements.

I have Willetts in my family tree. My great grandmother Frances was a Willett .She was born in London, England. Her father's name was James. I am not sure of her mother's name . It is either Jane and /or Elizabeth .Also not too sure of her last name ..could be Lyles. Frances had 2 sisters ..Jane and Harriet Amelia . Frances married John Austin in England . In 1896 they came to Ontario, Canada with their two children , John W.G.T. Austin and Lillian Cordelia Austin[ my grandmother . You are welcome to check out my family tree. I believe the name "Willett" may come from the French name "Ouellette " .They could have originaly come from France and would most likely have been Huguenots [ French Protestants of the 16th and 17th century].

Family Tree DNA is running sales through the end of 2011, and there is a Willett_Ouellette project at:
www.familytreedna.com/public/Willett/
to help you make sense of the results.

Looks like English Willetts are currently outnumbered by French ones. ;-)

Lisa
