Hello I have been trying to find more out about the Willey family. My 3rd great grandfather is Frederick E Willey. Frederick had 2wives. His first was Jessie Williams and they had Henrietta Jesse Willey(My 2nd great Grandmother). His second wife was Ida Thurber. They had 3 children. Fern, Doris, and Eriwn James Willey. I know Erwin lived in Vt, so if you have any information regarding them that you could share it would be greatly appreciated.

~Elise

Re: Willey from Cherryfield, Maine area

I just happened to spot this and thought it may be of interest to you:

Carlton Willey: The ace from Cherryfield
by Harry Gratwick

As the baseball season begins, it seems appropriate to recognize one of the best ball players to come from the state of Maine.
Pitcher Carlton Willey was a true Mainer. Tributes to him at the time of his death on July 21, 2009, emphasized how humble a man he was and how deep his hometown roots were. Willey grew up in Cherryfield, Maine and, when his baseball career was over, he returned to Cherryfield, where he died at the age of 78.
Folks in Cherryfield remember Willey as a modest, unassuming man who never forgot where he came from. In 1760 Ichabod Willey was one of the town's founding fathers and the Willey family has been living there ever since.
Town Clerk Mona West remembers Carlton as a local celebrity who avoided the limelight. "He was just one of us. He was a great fellow."
To quote Larry Mahoney in the Bangor Daily News: "Every morning since his retirement from baseball in 1965, Willey hosted his old pals for conversations over coffee. At 8 a.m. sharp, every day but Sunday, the men gathered to discuss politics, people, hunting, fishing and of course, baseball." In time this came to be known as "The Old Men's Club".
Willey was a star athlete who graduated from Cherryfield Academy in 1949. The next summer he went to a try-out in Bangor sponsored by the Boston Braves. (The Braves moved to Milwaukee in 1953 and then to Atlanta in 1966.)
When they got to the field, a friend from Cherryfield recalls Willey looking at the more than 200 kids and saying, "There's no sense in me going down there." His friend kept after him, however, and after a couple of weeks of try-outs, Carlton made the team. At the end of a successful summer league season Willey was invited to the Braves headquarters in Boston, where he signed a contract for $800.
Willey spent the next seven years mostly in the minor leagues, honing his pitching skills. He pitched for Quebec, Toledo, Atlanta, Wichita and the U.S. Army. In 1952 he was drafted and spent two years in Germany, where he was assigned to special services. In his case special services meant he played a lot of baseball during his tour of duty.
In 1957 Carlton had a spectacular minor league season winning 21 games and pitching Wichita to the American Association pennant. Following this he was called up to the Milwaukee Braves, who were facing the Yankees in the World Series.
In 1954 Willey married his high school sweetheart Nancy Higgins who was his wife for the next 26 years. When I spoke with the former Mrs. Willey recently I asked her what career memories Carlton would have been the proudest of.
The first one was easy, she said. In 1958 he was selected as Rookie of the Year in the National League; he was 9-7 with a 2.70 ERA. She added that he pitched four shutouts that year and nine complete games.
Although he was very good, Willey frequently went weeks between starts. In his first start in the spring of 1958, he pitched a shutout against the San Francisco Giants. Six weeks later he did it again. The problem was that the Braves had an outstanding pitching staff that included the Hall of Fame lefthander Warren Spahn, as well as standouts Lew Burdett, Bob Buhl and Juan Pizzaro. Under the circumstances, it is remarkable that Willey won 28 games over a five-year period and compiled a very respectable ERA of 3.10.
His second-proudest memory occurred in 1963 when Willey had been traded to the Mets. Nancy said that in June of that year Carlton hit a home run with the bases loaded while pitching for the Mets in the old Polo Grounds. The Mets were playing Houston and in the fifth inning they deliberately walked the batter ahead of him to get to the supposedly weaker hitting pitcher. The Houston pitcher grooved one and Willey hit it out of the park for a grand slam.
Stepping back to 1958, Willey's third favorite moment came in the World Series when the Braves were playing the Yankees again. To quote Nancy Willey: "They were deliberating whether start Carlton or Bob Rush and Rush got the nod because he was a veteran pitcher. In the 8th inning he was taken out and relieved by Carlton." He told his wife later, "my legs were so weak that I didn't know which way I was going. Then this kid from Blue Hill, Maine of all places, ran out on the mound and asked me ‘How do you think you'll do'? I said, ‘I don't know, but we'll find out'". (Willey retired the side, but he didn't get the win, because the Braves lost to the Yankees in extra innings).
In the spring of 1964 Willey was told he would pitch the opening game of the regular season. Disaster struck in the form of a line drive that broke his jaw in the final spring training game. As Nancy Willey recalled, "The game started late in the afternoon because of a festival. When the ball was hit, Carton was blinded by the setting sun and barely got his glove up to deflect the ball, which broke his jaw. He never recovered after that. He hurt his shoulder trying to come back too soon."
Willey scouted for the Phillies for a few years before returning to Maine where he worked as a probation officer and later as the manager of a blueberry processing plant in Hancock. Later, he and his son, Richie, started a house-painting business. In spite of his injuries, Carlton Willey always considered himself fortunate to have played in the big leagues. After all how many of us have had an eight-year major league career?
Marie
Good to hear from you. The Willeys on the Hope with Hugh and Elizabeth Dunn were cousins. The Joseph on the Hope is an older brother of my gg grandfather Henry Willey who came to Australia with his wife Jane (Lock) on the Nestor in 1854. Joseph settled in Tasmania and Henry at Macedon in Victoria. The Frederick and Joseph on the Hope were sons of Robert Willey son of George and Sarah (Webb) and they settled in the Bellarine Peninsula area in Victoria.
If you are interested I can send you more on the Willeys as a gedcom file. I am not sure if I can do it through this site. My email is robinob at bigpod.com Replace the at with a @ of course.
All the best
5th cousin (I think)
Robin

Robin,
I am also a descendant of George willey and Sarah Webb.
My GGG grandmother was Hannah Willey, daughter of george and sarah. Hannah married William Dunn [Don, Donne] in Drayton Somersetshire, their son Hugh Dunn married Elizabeth Lavis in Drayton Somerset in 1845, Hugh Elizabeth and theeir sons William and James Dunn came to Australia in 1849 on the ship "Hope" as did some other Willeys from Drayton Somerset. I have not worked out the exact relationship betwen the Dunns and the Willeys but I am sure there has to be one.
I would like to know if you have Hannah Wiley on your tree.
Regards Marie

This is a message to all who use this site ......please when you want to know something about somebody it is really helpful if you give us some additional information such as location -- are your Willeys from the Delmarva area or are they New England Willeys. If you don't know where then when would help --are you looking for a Revolutionary war private or a Civil war spy or a WWII hero.
I looked up Freda Willey on Ancestry.com and with one stroke I had 50 different Fredas and I had only looked at one page. If I had a location or a time period I might have found something .....as it was I was quickly discouraged .....so sorry I am no help
Carol

First let me say I am not related to these Willeys --I came across them while researching my Willeys who come from Delaware

Timothy is the son of Isaac and Elizabeth [maiden name unknown] Timothy was born about 1861- there are at least two other children Elsworth b abt 1863 and Seth- b abt 1876. It appears that Ellizabeth died between 1876 and 1880 and Isaac married Mary [mnuk] in 1880, there is one child from that marriage Verna
Isaac is the son of Seth and Clarissa Willey - Seth was born abt 1808 in NY ......the family appears to have live in NY most of their lives I found them mostly in Broome Co. and Sullivan Co One strange thing when you are looking for them the last name is generally spelled "Willie" Most of this information came from census.
That is all I know
Carol

I have some information for you. I am from Morris Willey who was the next to youngest child of Eleazer and Wealthy (Marsh)Willey. My grandmother, Lilly (Willey) Bingham recieved many family documents since she was the custodial child taking care of her father Morris and her mother Mary (Bovee) Willey at the time of their passing. Gratefully her mother was a wonderful family history note maker.

Eleazer Willey ...father
b abt 1784 in NY,could be 1781 or 1787, handwriting unclear
d 1832 in or near Watertown, Jefferson County, NY
(I may have found a family match in Orleans which is north of Watertown in a census, but it's not at my fingertips)

Wealthy Marsh
b abt 1793 in NY
d 1837 or 38 in or near Watertown, Jefferson County, NY
(There was a Marsh that was single and captured as a soldier in the 1837 failed invasion of Canada from Jefferson County and he was sent to Tasmania by the British to a penal colony, I don't know if he made it back but he was released after a period of some years.)

Children that I know of:

Orville Florid Willey
b 25 Jan 1808...believe in the Watertown area
m 14 May 1839 to Saloma White (Martin)[ b 28 Nov 1811 and d
5 Oct 1888 Nunda, McHenry County, IL]
d 10 May 1887, Nunda, McHenry County, IL
six children

This is what I have on Sardis...
Sardis Denslow Willey
b 5 Apr 1811, Watertown, Jefferson County, NY
m 11 Feb 1847 to Abi R Brown [d 29 May 1865, in Sardis obit
her death year was given as 1867]
d 13 Feb 1896, Sugar Grove Twp, Kane County, IL
bur 15 Feb 1896, West Aurora Cemetery, Kane County, IL
(I have the obituary and death certificate for Sardis)
children:
Charlott M, b 18 Feb 1848, m 4 Nov 1866 to Alford Barnes
Frank, b 28 Aug 1851
Mary Amy, 9 Jun 1855
George, b 28 Nov 1858
(Thank you for Julia Davis last name, the family notes only had "Julia A")

Irena (also spelled as Irene) Willey
b 1812, Watertown area
m , John Hatch
d 28 Feb 1899
(I'm actively working on this family group)

Lewis Willey
b 26 Sep 1815?, Watertown area (can't verify date yet)
m , Catherine
d
(Still working here too)

Henry Warren Willey
b 29 Jan 1820, Rutland, Jefferson County, NY
m 1 Mar 1847, Sarah Tanner, Sugar Grove, Kane County, IL
d 2 Jan 1902, Lasalle County, IL
(There's a complete family group sheet in the LDS Family History Library, Earl Pingree Tanner submitter)
nine children

Morris Charles Willey (also Govenuer Morris W, Morris W)
b 5 Jul 1827, Watertown?, Jefferson County, NY
m 14 Jul 1855, Mary Bovee, DeKalb Town (rural DeKalb or DeKalb Twp, I have the exact location with sec #, etc.)
d 9 Feb 1909, DeKalb, DeKalb County, IL (+ exact location)
eleven children, two infant deaths

Wealthy Willey
b abt 1830, near Watertown?, Jefferson County, NY
m 24 Jul 1850, William Sheffer Jr.
d 21 May 1869
(still working on this family too)

Some interesting info. This family had strong ties to the Methodist Episcopal Church from a biographical record for Morris Willey. A Barzillai Willey was noted as one of the early visiting preachers helping to build membership in that congregation as I found in the ME Church of Watertown website. Also I found a Barzillai Willey mentioned in the History of Jefferson County, New York, published by L.H. Everts & Co, 1878, on page 74 in regard to a case in the Circuit Court held on 20 Jun 1808. There was a Barzillai Willey that was a preacher. I believe him to be Eleazer's grandfather and Eleazer's father was Barzillai's oldest child Nathaniel Talman. For years I have tried to fit him in as a child to the seventh child, Eleazer, without success in that or in finding another Willey candidate as my Eleazer's father. One last piece of info, I found in the 1830 census a Nathaniel Wiley (Watertown), Obadiah Wiley(Orleans), Ebenezer Wiley(Orleans), and a Ezra Willey(Rodman)all in Jefferson County NY. There is quite a contingent of Wiley families in the county then and now. I do wish I would have written down the census year but I also had found a Eleazer Wiley in Rutland, Jefferson County, NY and I have just the indexed summary. There could have been some name confusion with the census taking. I need to relocate these census records. Research is a wonderful and I'm happy that my notes have improved as the years have accumulated so I can now share these pieces of information I have gathered with you.

Hi Tracey
Thankyou for your lovely message.
I'm afraid I did what you suggested and looked up your brother Rory online, and noticed he was a member of Facebook so I sent him a message, only a brief one saying that we are cousins and that I have been in contact with you via Ancestry. I hope it completes the circle for you.
Like I said Tracey contact me anytime and please look me up when ever you are in England.
I am sorry I have forced your hand re-telling your brothers by contacting Rory (perhaps he doesnt access FaceBook often !? and you'll have a chance to explain first).
I have told my family (my mum and sisters)about our contact, and it would be great if one day we could all meet.
Take care and keep in touch
Jo x

Thanks so much Jo for these details. I know, totally bizaar that we have made contact. I do believe in fate, all I can say is that I am so glad that it was you that posted 2 years ago. I have to admit that I was a little worried that I might be contacting someone that would not be open to communicating with me as our family was so distant from your family for so long.
I have decided to write to Nick with no pressure for him to respond or expectations from my side if he does not, I feel like I just need to close my circle and let him know that if nothing else I am grateful to him for giving me life as thanks to my Mum, I have had a wonderful one and find more value in my own family(husband and kids) because of my past growing up without a Dad. If you are anything to go by, the kindness you have afforded me, I'm sure both your Mum and my uncle Guy are/ were fantastic people too.Good, kind kids are a projection of their amazing parent/s.
I have not told my brothers about the contact I have made yet but I will let them know soon, I will keep in touch and let you know the reaction that I get, sure it will be good.

Keep your strong, happy memories of your beautiful Dad as I will of my Mum.

x Tracey

Hi Tracey

I have been thinking how odd after all these years that we have finally made contact, both of us curious about our ancestry, and seeking answers after the death of an extremely loved parent. I am sure it must be fate and I am so glad that you answered my post, albeit 2 years on.
I am sure my mother will be extremely flattered, as I am, to know that your mother named her son's after your Uncle Guy.
Hi Jo

It would be great if you could get an address for me, that way if I pluck up the courage I have it if I decide to write.
We did have the surname Willey for all our school days but when Rory met his wife and they decided to get married (17 years ago), he suddenly got a bee in his bonnet and asked my Mum if he could change his name back to her maiden name (Marthinusen) as he felt that not having known our Father he would like to give his children my Mums' family name. We held a family meeting and decided to all revert back to Marthinusen. If you google Rory Marthinusen you will see him pop up all over the place, he is the Operations Director for Brassier Blanc (Raymond Blancs' chain of restaurants). Sorry to hear about your divorce, I'm sure it can't be easy and definitly not for your son at such an impressionable age, life has a way of throwing us curve balls, hope you come out strong at the end of it. Both my brothers have your Dads' name as one of their middle names and our grans maiden name. Rory is Rory Guy Mcguire and Angus is Angus Guy Mcguire. My Mum must have been fond of your Dad back in the day to name her sons after him (Ha,ha).
I was planning a trip some time this year to see my brothers
as I have not been able to see them since my Mum passed away.We have not really had closure as I had to have her cremated in Malawi and have her ashes bought back to Cape Town. I have kept some ashes to take over and scatter them with my brothers, probably in Bath. If I do come over, I will definitely let you know and who knows, we may actually get to meet each other 40 odd years down the road.

Chat soon
x Tracey
Hi Tracey

I realised after I had sent my reply to you that your comment was not for me.
Did you all keep your mother's surname or Willey ? I can't believe Angus and Rory live in England and I have never met them. It's a shame. I'm sorry to hear about your mother dying from malaria, that's so tragic and my heart goes out to you.
I am unsure if Uncle Nick got married again or not Tracey. Like I said he would visit from time to time but many years would go past. I know his chronic lung disease is a combination of heavy (60 + a day) smoking and affects of getting on in years, I dont think he was born with lung problems. I know he is living in the Netherlands with his partner Patricia ( he was the last time I saw him) Just let me know if you would like to write to him and I will ask mum for his last address.
I am currently getting divorced, I have one son named after my father, Guy, he will be 17 in March. My mother Anna is living in Whitstable Kent. My sister Elizabeth has 3 children, Caitlin 14, George 12, and Ellen (Elle) 10.
My little sister Kathleen has 2 children and is pregnant with her third due in August ! Isabelle 3 in May, James 1 in May.
Contact me any time Tracey.

Jo x

Hi Art,

I bet I have the same information. We talked many many years ago...I am the wife of Roger Taylor...son of Elaine (Willey) and Robert Taylor. I can't believe the number of people I have found searching this line that can't get back further than Eleazer and Wealthy (Marsh) Willey. With names like that you think they would be easier to fine. Though I am wondering where I got the Isaac? Right now I can't find an Isaac in this family and am thinking I confused my Isaac Dewey with the Willey family.

Hi Jo

Sorry there seems to be a miss communication. There was another post from someone on this site,( see all post at the bottom), that commented that my Mum could not have been that incredible if she would have been upset with me looking for other family from my Fathers side. I did reply to him saying it was complicated as I grew up not knowing my Father, he has since posted again saying he now understands (He is apparently from another Willey branch, not sure exactly where he fits in), so the post about being bitter was not for you, sorry about that, you must have thought that I was a little crazy. I think you answered my question by saying Nick was not one for keeping in touch, could explain why he never looked for us. The lung thing is pretty ironic as I have very weak lungs, they have collapsed twice and I had quite a serious lung op. about 4 years ago, always wondered about family health history from that side. I am really sorry to hear about your Dad to, I don't think it is ever easy to lose a parent no matter how old you are. I was pretty devastated at my Mums passing, she went on holiday to Malawi and got Malaria and never came home, it came as a huge shock to us.Yes, I have an older brother Rory (42), he is married and has a daughter. He lives in Bath. I also have a younger brother, Angus (38), he is divorced, no kids and lives in London. I am 40, married with 3 girls and living in Cape Town.
I am not sure that my Father would appreciate to hear from me, as you said he is not one for keeping in touch, so may not want to be found. I unfortunately don't know him at all, so wouldn't know if he would be happy or not. The last that I had heard, which was years ago, was that he had met, not sure if married another woman in Durban and had a son from that relationship? My Mum never re-married or got involved with anyone actually, she just put her head down, raised us 3 kids, did a great job of it. You are obviously married, do you have any kids? I am getting mine all ready as the new school year starts tomorrow. My little one Tara has her first day at school (6), my middle one Kyra start high school (13) and my eldest goes into Matric, Abigail (17).
Thanks for all the info you sent me, I will read over it again and try to put the whole picture together.

Chat again soon
x Tracey
Hi Tracey

I am not bitter at all ! so do not know what you meant by that ??? I have nothing to be bitter about.
I am 46 years of age my dad Guy was your dad's brother Nick so that makes us cousins :)
I have heard that Uncle Nick was married before and had 3 children I think. I do not know all the names of my cousins but I know one of his children was named Rory. It's a shame we did not ever meet or know of each other when we were growing-up.
My mum said that uncle Nick had got divorced and that Ingrid (who I never met but my mum did and speaks highly of her - condolences on your loss it is never easy to lose someone as special or as close as your mum) lived in South Africa. My mum has a photo your mum must have sent her of 3 little children in their school uniform, she told me that the photo was of Ucle Nicks children.
Where do you live now and have you 2 brothers ? I live in Kent U.K. You have many cousins in Kent. My dad (who sadly died in Sept 2009) has 3 daughters, myself, Elizabeth and Kathleen. Uncle John unfortunately died 4 years ago and he has 3 sons Stephen, Christopher and Robert. Aunty Sue is still alive and living in Devon she has 3 daughters, Kirstie, Emma and Zanah.
We don't hear from Uncle Nick much, he was never one for keeping in touch. I believe he is now living in the Netherlands with his partner Patricia. Last time I saw Uncle Nick was at his brother's (Uncle John) funeral, he was too unwell to come to my fathers funeral apparently he has a chronic lung condition (years of heavy smoking I believe). I'm sure my mother has an address for Nick & Patricia, so if you want me to get it so you can write to your dad let me know.
If I can be of any more assistance or help Tracey please do not hesitate to ask. May be one day we could meet up ?

Your cousin

Jo Griggs (nee Willey).
I have information on the children of Eleazer WILLEY and Wealthy MARSH who lived in and around Watertown NY and Orleans NY. I am in Illinois and have been able to locate civil and some probate records. Would be glad to share. I am trying to research parents and families of both Eleazer and Wealthy. I'm a gg grandson of E&W WILLEY and a g grandson of Morris Willey, their sixth child. ajb

Thats why I said, not sure if I am opening a can of worms. My Mum was an incredible, strong, independant and adventerous woman. She was most definitely not against us finding out more about our fathers family and when we were old enough to understand she asked us on more than one occassion if we would like her assistance to make contact. We grew up not knowing any different so I suppose we were content in our little protected, closed off world and chose not to(I speak for myself when I say, I chose not too,I can't speak for my brothers). I think that I also thought that maybe if my father wanted to see me again, he might have made contact, being the adult. I could have been scared of rejection, who knows why we do what we do sometimes.Having recently lost my Mum, maybe I am looking for other answers.(She was too young to go).
I am not sure who you are or how you are related, just please remember whatever the situation there are always two sides to a story because you sound a little bitter.I'm sorry if you are.
