This is Henry Clay Wills. Joseph G. Booth, a former TX Ranger and auctioneer, now a traveling salesman, was his brother-in-law, having married Martha H. Wills in 1862 in San Antonio, TX. The Wills' father died in Wythe/Montgomery Co., VA in the 1850s and their mother moved her children to Texas.

My grandfather was George Frederick Wills, married to Mary Elizabeth Young, lived in Saint John, New Brunswick. There were three sons John Albert(my father) - George William - and Charles Frederick. Can supply more info.

My Grandfather George Frederick Wills died on 20 January 1907. I heard a similar story about him trying to save someone in the harbour. He lived and worked in Saint John New Brunswick. He was married to Mary Young. He had three siblings I believe - Emily, Alex, Louisa. Is this the same person??

Earl Wills was born in Sept 1903, Mary E. Wills was born March 22, 1905. These are the only children of Nathaniel and Josie Wills. Gene Wills is from the Nathaniel and Amy Edith marriage. Earl and Clara had three children, Bobby, Doris and Helen. Mary had two children, Bettie Ann (my mother) and Joe. She married Charles Perkins. Went to Grandpa Wills and Amy Edith's house every Christmas as I was growing up.

She is also buried at Oak HIll Cemetery in Lebanon. Gene Wills was Earl and Mary's half brother. Josie Dillon was their mother.

My name is K. Wills, I have some Wills information going back to Devon England. I am stuck because everyone seemed to name their children William and or John. I know with certainty that from line that John James Wills who was born in Canada, and that his father William Wills was born in New Abbot Devon England and immigrated to Ingersoll Canada.. I have his birth, Death and I believe marriage date. My problem is I am now stuck. I do know that some of the Wills line came from Scotland to England. My last living link just passed August 2009. So I am on my own piecing the information together.

Hi. My name is Brenna Stokes. Looking through your relations we are related through Johannes Wills/Wull son of Gerhardt. Johannes is my 5 gr. grandfather and my line goes through his son Daniel. My husband lived in Germany for a couple of years and we have since gone back and visited the city Gerhardt was born in. John Wills, heir of John Pate, 1715, Colonial Virginia

What connections did John Pate have to John Wills, or connections of the Pate family to the Wills family in Colonial Virginia 1650-1700?

John Pate was the oldest son of Col. Thomas Pate who died in Yorktown in 1703. Relatively little seems to be known about his life. Below I will present a timeline of his life and some additional information. To the best of my knowledge, this represents the most complete and comprehensive study on John Pate.

I would appreciate any information which could be provided to help answer the following questions:

1. What was the name of John's wife, and what is known about her?

2. What are the names of John's children? Only one child is known, and that is Sarah Pate who married Col. Wilson Cary, whose father Miles Cary was a member of the Council of State. (See more below.) I assume that he had no sons since his 2100-acre plantation did not go to a Pate son after his death.

3. Does anyone have a copy of his will? There are several references to a will (see below). It is interesting that he left a will at all, since he was only 29 years old when he died.

TIMELINE OF JOHN PATE 1677-1706

1677 John, the first child of Col. Thomas and Elizabeth Pate, born on April 27, Abingdon Parish Register, Gloucester County, Virginia

1703 His father, Col. Thomas Pate died, about age 53.

1704 John owned 1100 acres on the Gloucester Rent Roll, Petsworth Parish, and 1000 acres on the King and Queen County Rent Roll. This was the Pate Plantation that his father Thomas inherited from his uncle John. John apparently inherited the plantation by primogeniture.

1705 The vestry of Petsworth Parish, Gloucester County, selected John Pate as a vestryman to replace a deceased member on October 3. John must have been an impressive young man, since he was only 28 years old. This was a position of honor and responsibility and said to be "represented by gentlemen still living upon their ancestral estates".

1706 The Council of State appointed John Pate as a Justice of the Peace for Gloucester County, March 28, along with Thomas Read and Phillip Smith.

1706 John Pate is shown as a vestryman in the vestry book at its next meeting on April 23. Then at the next meeting recorded, John Pate was reported as deceased.

1706 At the next meeting vestry meeting recorded, John Pate was reported as deceased. Tragically, he was only 29 years old, dying between April 23 and October 9 of 1706.

1715 "Aug 16: John Wills: King and Queen County: 130 acres together with a little island being included adjoining to a tract of land devised to said Wills by John Pate, in his last will. Bounded by the main creek of Poropotank." Land Patents # 10 1710-1719 pg 243 on reel 10: Library of Virginia Archives Section.

c. 1728 John's daughter, Sarah c.1705-1783, married Col. Wilson Cary c.1701-1772, scion of a prominent and wealthy family. Their second daughter, Mary, was thought to be George Washington's "first sweetheart".

1744 On August 30, "Records of Colonial Gloucester County, Virginia", refers to "1141 acs. granted to Wingfield Webb & Richard Pate, Gentlemen, 1650, and by divers conveyances assigned to Wilson Cary".

Published references to John Pate

This John Pate is possibly the father of Mrs. Wilson Cary. I have in my library several volumes bearing the autograph "John Pate, 1706," on the title page above that of Colonel Wilson Cary (possibly his son-in-law), and to increase the probabilities, I would add, that I have also a volume showing in like manner the signature of Colonel Thomas Milner, and beneath it that of his son-in-law, Colonel Miles Cary. Now Colonel Wilson Cary in his will devises to his son lands lying on both sides of Poropotank, in the counties of Gloucester and King and Queen. These Gloucester lands, it is true, may have been subsequent purchases, and thus my theory that Colonel Cary acquired them through marriage might be untenable, still there is nothing to show that Miles Cary may not have been induced to invest in these very lands by the fact of his elder brother already having acquired property in Gloucester by marriage. However this may be, there certainly had been intermarriages between the Cary, Pate and Wills families.

Among the remnants of the Ceelys library are several books (e.g., Dryden's Miscellany Poems, iii, 1693, and v, 1703; Echard's Ecclesiastical History, 1702) bearing on the title- page the signature of "John Pate," the last with the date 1706 appended. Moreover, Colonel Wilson Cary by will disposed of lands lying on Poropotank Creek in Gloucester and King and Queen, the acquisition of which was not readily explainable except on the assumption of inheritance. It appears also from casual mention in the York records that Miles Cary was administrator of the estate of Edward Pate and that-a Miles Cary (probably Miles, Jr., of Potash Creek) was executor of John Pate under a will, now lost with the Gloucester records; while John Pate appears on the Virginia Quit Rent Rolls of 1704 as the owner of lands on Poropotank in Gloucester and King and Queen.

I wrote a detailed mess then lost it!!

My mother was a Wills. I have just traced back to Lwrence Wills born in Dartmouth 1819 and his children in St Budeaux and thereabouts. I have just had his marriage cert back which confirms his father was Vincent Wills. There is a possibility his wife was Mary Parnell, I dont know yet.
My mother was told they were related to the WD and HO Wills family. When they married in 1950 my Great Grandfather Lawrenc eDaniel Wills was contacted by the 'Wills' family regarding the marriage.

I am trying to prove the connection and think it comes from before the shop was established in 1780.

Can you help or give me any guildence.

Just browsing and hoping something would fall into my lap.

My mother was a Wills and I have trace her family going back to Vincent Wills. I think he possibly married Mary parnell, I dont know for sure yet. His son Lawrence was born in Dartmouth 1819. Some of his children were born in St Budeaux. He married Mary Morris from Carnardon in 1845.

Going back. I am trying to trace Lawrence's siblings but most importantly before Vincent. There is an extra motive. My Mums family were somehow related to the Wills tabacco importers. They contacted my great grandfather Lawrence Daniel Wills back in 1950 to enquire about their wedding. Thats all I know. I think they come from the family before 1780 and some went into Tobacco and opened their shop in Bristol in 1780, ha , MAYBE THEY SMUGGLED IT!! and sold it far enough away to avoid suspician. WILLS from Illogan, Cornwall, UK - 1840-1870

I'm searching for relatives of John WILLS (b.1845 Illogan) and Mary Ann GILBERT (b.1846 Illogan) who immigrated with their 5 children aboard the ship TREVELYAN from Plymouth (U.K.) arriving in Sydney Harbour 30th Dec 1877.

Their children, all born in Illogan, are named: John (b.1866), Minnie (b.1870), Richard (b.1871, my relative), Sarah (b.1873), and Harry (b.1871).

At the time of leaving Illogan (residing in Broad Lane) they left behind Mary Ann's mother, Grace GILBERT (nee JEFFERY), her husband, Jacob JILBERT having died a few years previously.
Mary Ann's brother (Richard GILBERT) had immigrated to Victoria (Australia) a few years earlier, and married Ann TREBILCOCK.

I do not know much about what happened to the WILLS family after arriving in Australia, but Richard (b.1871) moved eventually to South Australia, married and had my great-grandfather, John WILLS, who lived in Broken Hill.

I would be very grateful for any information about these people mentioned above.

Nathaniel "Nat" Ward Wills died 6 June 1960 and is buried in Oak Hill Cemetery Lebanon. Amy Edith was the d/o John W and Florence M Broshar Campbell. Amy was born 19 Aug 1887 and died 3 June 1967 and is buried in Oak Hill Lebanon,Boone Co,IN as is :Josephine/Josefine Adaline Dillon born 1881 died
13 Sept 1912, Earl J died 22 June 1991 and his wives,Clara E
born 22 May 1906-30 Mar 1946 and Elvah M Gentry 21 Oct 1905-4 Oct 1981 and Ward Eugene/Eugene Ward born 16 Mar 1921=8 Oct 1997. Eugene "Gene" married Joan Jones d/o Horace A and Bessie Fern Cannon Jones. They were my Aunt and Uncle. Gene and Joan(still living) have two daughters.
William Irvin and Dorthia Lulu are buried there also.
Charles Archiball was in WWII and died June 1945 but I do not think in the war.

Robert and/or David Wills in the late 1700s in PA

Looking for a lead to the above named men rumored to have raised wheat for transporting to western PA. Several years ago I was given to understand they worked farms on opposite sides of a creek to the south or east of what is now Newburg, PA. It was a great story but appears to be nothing more.
