WINCH in Buckinghamshire

Aloha All,

I am searching for any information or connections to the WINCH surname in the county of Buckingham in the 1700's.

My 7th great grandfather is Richard WINCH whose wife is Frances. He was baptized into the C.O.E. a year before his death in 1727, and Frances had already died in 1709.

To my knowledge, they had four daughters. Elizabeth, Frances, Rebecca and Martha. Martha married John BUSHBY in the parish of Great Brickhill in Buckinghamshire the year after her father died, 1728.

I am unsure of any information pertaining to Richard's ancestry, or the maiden name and family of his wife, Frances. ANY connections to the WINCH (or BUSHBY) surname in any of the parishes of Buckinghamshire (or Bedfordshire) are of great interest to me. Based on my preliminary research of the WINCH surname, I believe he might have come from a wealthy family located in East or West Winch of Norfolk. I just don't know how he ended up in Buckinghamshire.

Mahalo,
Lanea (Booher) Miller
boohergirls@gmail.com

Winch family of Ticehurst in the 16th Century

I'm trying to sort out my ancestral line in the Ticehurst area of Sussex back in the 16th Century.

So far I have: - Thomas Winch (who I call "the Younger") (b. 1625, Ticehurst; m. 1664 Ticehurst (Ann Hayward); d. 1697 Ticehurst)
Son of: - - Thomas Winch (who I call "the Elder") (b. 1598, Ticehurst; m. 1623 Ticehurst (Elizabeth Yonge); d. 1656 Ticehurst)
Son of: - - Daniel(?) Winch (b. 1580 (?) Ticehurst (?); spouse not known; presumably married prior to 1598; d. 1656 (?) Ticehurst (?)

and there I stall.

I have good data for both Thomas's, but probably rampant speculation for Daniel (especially given the "coincidence" of his and his sons death dates - though not impossible as they would have been 76 and 58 respectively - old for the times but not impossibly so; maybe the roof fell in on both of them at the same time!)

Can anybody help going backwards?

Many Thanks in anticipation.

David Winch

Augusta Winch

Just recently started looking into our family history and we have been able to find out the names of our grandparents and now we're looking into our great grand parents.

On our Grandmother's birth certificate (1886) it names Augusta Keep nee Winch as the mother and William Keep as the father, living at 7 Gas Lane in Dartford.

We have found William on the 1881 census at Gas Lane and we have found him on the 1891 census at Gas lane - both times living with his parents.

But Augusta never turned up and her daughter was not there im 1891. Though we can find all the paperwork for the daughter (our grandmother) the only evidence that we have that Augusta ever existed is on her daughters birth certificate.

Any help with this would be most gratefully recieved. We believe Augusta was born in the early/mid 1860s, and she was born Augusta Winch - we have no middle name. We can find no birth certificate and no death certificate for this woman, and no marriage certificate for her and William.

My Father, Frederick Winch was born in Maidstone Kent in 1909. He always told me that his Father, John Winch, had come from Brixton, but it seems that he was born in Maidstone.

The Father of John Winch was Walter Winch, described as a quarryman, who married a member of the Abnett family in Maidstone.

John Winch certainly had some connection with the London area. My father told a story of how John was duped in London's famous Petticoat Lane Market.

One of his Abnett relations had married a tailor, and they lived in Kennington, near Brixton.

I realise that this is speculative, but if I manage to find something more substatial I will pass it on to you.

Kind Regards,

Malcolm Winch
13th March 2009

Sarah Winch - Ticehurst, Sussex

hello,

have been searching for many years for info on my 6g grandmother who I believe was Sarah Winch, born about 1795 in Ticehurst, East Sussex, and married Samuel Puxty (born 1790, Ticehurst) in 1810 in Ticehurst. I believe Samuel and Sarah both died before 1841, as I can find no record of either of them on the 1841 census, and their youngest children were living with older brothers and sisters at that point. I can find no record of death either, so it may have been before 1837.

If anyone has any links to the Winch family of East Sussex around this period, I would be very interested - Sarah is proving to be very elusive!

Thanks,
Lesley Shiner (nee Puxty)

I really don't have much new info. on this line. Simon or Symon Winch M: Ellen Logan. Their daughter Ellen M: Thomas Passmore the following is his Will. Thomas Passmore left a will dated December 9-1651 and proven May 11-1652. He is referred to as Thomas Pasmore of Bray a Clothier.
"A Quaker Family Through Six Generations The Passmores in America" by Robert Houston Smith 1992 gives the following per this Will
" 5 pound each to Thomas's wife Ellen and children John, Richard, William, Elizabeth, Eidie, Ellen and Thomas. Thomas's wife Ellen and his son Thomas were made executors. Witness were C. Wince and sy (Simon) Winch" This would have been his father-in-law.

Simon Winch's father was Robert Winch and also had a brother Robert.

Thanks
Cheryell

Re: Samuel Winch Of Framingham,Mass. and the first Winch in America 1609

Sarah WENTWORTH was actually the 2nd wife of Samuel WINCH. Sarah was the widow of Benjamin BARNARD, who died 12 September 1694. Sarah had 2 children with Benjamin, Sarah and Benjamin, who were raised by their Uncle Paul WENTWORTH after the death of Benjamin.

Additionally, The Wentworth Genealogy: English and American(John Wentworth, LL.D.), Volume 1, Pages 106-112 states the following:

Benjamin Barnard, of whose children their "Uncle Paul Wentworth" became guardian. He had wife Sarah. He is found to be of York co., Me., in 1676, 1679, 1685, and 1689. He had land in Berwick of his brother James Barnard, of Kittery, 12 January 1685-6, as above mentioned, he being "of Dover, N. H.," and the land bounded on the south by that of Richard Tozer. He and his wife, Sarah, were of Dover, 24 August 1687, and deeded land to his brother Joseph Barnard, of Berwick, Me. He died 12 September 1694.

If the sisters of Benjamin Barnard are all given here, and given correctly, the wife of Paul Wentworth could not have been a Barnard.

Either Benjamin Barnard and Paul Wentworth married sisters (of which no trace has been found by most careful search); or, which is more probable, Benjamin Barnard's wife Sarah was daughter of Elder William Wentworth. Benjamin Barnard's residence in Dover, in the near vicinity of Elder William, and his possession, at one time, of land bounded by that of Richard Tozer, render it clearly possible. We believe that it is the case.

Mrs. Barnard was once captured by the Indians. Among the captives recovered by Capt. Benjamin Church, in his capture of Androscoggin Fort, 14 September 1690, was "Benjamin Barnard's wife, of Salmon Falls."

Nothing can be ascertained of the children of Benjamin Barnard, of whom their Uncle Paul Wentworth was guardian, except that his nephew, Benjamin Barnard married 1st, Elizabeth, daughter of Rev. Samuel Paris, of Sudbury Mass.; 2d, while living in Hopkinton, Mass., he married in Watertown, 18 December 1726, Mary Wellington, and had a daughter, Sarah Barnard, baptized in Hopkinton, Mass., in 1728.

Sarah, widow of Benjamin Barnard, senior, and the supposed daughter of Elder William Wentworth, married, 2d, 11 January 1698-9, Samuel Winch, of Framingham, Mass., who died there 3 August 1718. They had, ---Mary Winch, born 23 November 1700, who married Benoni Adams; and Daniel Winch, born 28 June 1702. Beyond this, nothing is know of the widow of Benjamin Barnard and of Samuel Winch, or their descendants.

Tracy,

A while back you had a posting about having information on Samuel WINCH's (Abt 1650) Parents and other information. I would love to get that info if you still have it.

I am a decendant of the following line:
- Samuel WINCH (Abt 1650-1718)
-- Lt. Thomas WINCH (1694-1761)
--- Thomas WINCH (1723 - ?)
---- Samuel WINCH (1760 - ?)
----- Samuel WINCH Jr. (1797 -1875)
------ Margaret Ann WINCH (1833-1917)

If you would like, I have a copy of the Probate records for Samuel WINCH Jr. (1797-1875), and also information on his Sister, Marta (Patty) (WINCH) HAZLETINE (1783-1863). I am still working on straightening out the mess between his 3rd and 4th wives. I need to make a trip to the Court House about an hour away to get a copy of the filing against his estate.

I know there has been much confusion about the birth dates of Samuel WINCH Jr. He was in fact born in 1797, and is buried in Painesville, Ohio with wife #4. Mary Ann (LAPHAM) (WARNER) (DEXTER) WINCH.

I am planning a trip to the Boston area next month to do some checking on "WINCH BROS". I actually have a Invoice from the Shoe company, and if you would like a scanned copy, please let me know.

If you want to email me directly, my email is khackett@wmis.net

Thanks

Kevin Hackett

According to the vital records of Framingham, Massachusetts Hepzibeth Winch was born on October 1, 1769 the daughter of Nathan Winch b.1737 and she married Samuel Rollins of Dublin, New Hampshire on November 22, 1792. Her brother Nathan also married a Rollins, Lydia Rollins around the same time. As for her being called Lucy it is likely that it was a nickname I have come across this with other family lines. Also, History of the town of Amherst, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire states that Samuel m. Lucy Winch and removedto Canada. I hope this helps.

Sincerely,
Tracy Winch Colomb
