Harmon Kellems/Kellum is my ggg-grandfather. Harriet Brown? Winchester was his second wife. Robert Stockburger has the famous "Bloody Hand Bible" in his possession. I have copies from the family pages of that Bible. Below is a narrative sent to me by Robert ... William Carroll Kellems/Kellum is a son of Harmon and my gg-grandfather. From his narrative, I can only infer/(guess at) the names of Harriet's two sons. The date of the incident is July 4, 1863. I believe this took place in Clay county. There is a bit of confusion in reading this narrative as Ellen Kellems was not killed in this raid. She survived and married Jesse Perry. However, I believe that at least 2 of the Winchester boys were killed.
***
Robert Stockburger narrative , April 5, 2009
William Carroll Kellems was a fiery redhead, his wife (Penelope Boyd) was slightly red headed. He had been of Northern sentiment. She was of deeply Southern sentiment. He enlisted in the Confederate Missouri Cavalry and was shortly afterwards medically discharged. He has been said to have been shot from ambush by the Union soldiers. Some/All agree that his brother John Tipton Kellems was killed July 4, 1863, his body, Harriet, thrown into the Kellems yard and the house shot up with at least Josiah Harmon Kellems Sr and Jr., Ellen Kellems and it is believed 2 of Harmons stepsons, the sons of his second wife, Harriet Winchester were killed. Ellen married Jess Perry in Illinois just to the east of Carbondale and Josiah Harmon Sr. and Jr. and Ellen went back to Bureau county Illinois and Gilbert Kellems III to help. Several bloody hand prints placed in Kellems Bible although I believe all to be Josiah Harmon Sr., possibly one for each dead or wounded.

I will continue to see what I can find out.
Who was your G grandmother? My Great Grand father was Joseph Winchester (1881) from Macduff. His father was Joseph Winchester and Magdalene Strachan from Buckie. Joseph (1881) apparently worked at Balmoral Castle as a grounds keeper and met his wife, Amelia, who was a chamber maid. They were married 6-30-1906 in Aberlour. He later moved to Glenlivet and worked at the Glenlivet Distillery. He later came to the US on 6-21-1908 and later moved to Glasco, Kansas/ Minneapolis, Kansas. He had 6 children with his wife Amelia Hay. Their children were(Joseph Jr.(1906), John Hay (1907), both born in Glenlivet, Lebarre Just(1910), Douglas (1913), Amelia W. (1914)and Muriel (1916). My grandfather, was named Labarre Just. My grandfather grew up in Kansas and moved to Portland, Oregon, USA, in approx 1942 to find work in the Shipyards, during WWII. I am curious regarding any relatives that stayed in Scotland. It seems like he and his 8 siblings all left in the early 1900's and went to New York, Kansas and Missouri. Did Joseph and Magdalene stay or leave? Do you have info or census for 1881 and 1891. It looks like you live in Macduff still? I live in Portland, Oregon, USA.
If you have anytime or info, I would love to chat. It is fun to connect the dots.

My email is Mikewinchester@comcast.net.

Take care

Hi Beth, I noticed your post regarding Mary Jane Winchester from MacDuff. I too am starting to do some research. Mary J. is my Great Grandfather's (Joseph Winchester) sister, he was born in 1881 in MacDuff. I found travel info from Ellis Island and have the ship manifests. Joseph came to the US on 6-21-08 with his sister Edith. They went to Albany New York I think. A year later in 5-23-1909, Joseph's wife, Amelia Winchester came over with their two sons Joseph Jr. (1906) and John Hay (1907). Mary J. is listed also as travelling with them. I know that Joseph and Amelia moved to Minneapolis, Kansas right away. I do not believe that any of Joseph's siblings (8 in all- which included John Alexander, Euphemia, Magdalene, Edith, Mary J. Stanley, George or Leah) followed him. I have all the info on Joseph's family line from then until now, DOB's and when they died. Joseph's had 6 children (Joseph Jr., John Hay, Lebarre Just, Douglas, Amelia W. and Muriel). My Grandfather was Lebarre Just (1910). Prior to WWII 1940-1942), John Hay, Amelia W. and Lebarre moved to Portland, Oregon at different times. Lebarre had 5 children in the Portland area (Richard, Daniel, Donna, Sandra and Gary). My father was Daniel. I have asked my Aunts and Uncles and none of them remember meeting any of Joseph's siblings except for Leah in Kansas. In 1974 as a child, I went to Minneapolis, Kansas and visited Amelia, Joseph Jr and Muriel. They were my father's Aunts and Uncles. I just contacted Patrice Winchester and she is a decedent of John Alexander, Joseph's (1881) brother. I am curious regarding the Winchesters from Scotland prior to John Winchester and his wife, Ann Robertson and Joseph Winchester and his wife, Magdalene Strachan. My uncle Richard, went to Scotland several years ago and found one of the homes that Joseph (1881) lived in on 4 Shore Terrace, MacDuff. Joseph worked at Balmoral Castle as a grounds keeper and met his wife Amelia Hay, a chamber maid. They were married in June 30, 1906 in Aberlour, Scotland. They later moved to Glenlivet and he worked at the Glenlivet Distillery. Apparently he became a heavy drinker of the Spirits and his wife made him move to the US, or so I hear. I think Amelia Hay may have had relatives already that had moved to Kansas and that is why only he moved to Kansas as opposed to staying in New York. You said that Mary J. moved to Concordia, Kansas. I looked on a map and she was very close to the Kansas Winchesters who were in the Salinas, Glasco and Minneapolis area, so they would have obviously done stuff together. I would love to find out what you may know. I am looking for the 1881 and 1891 census from Scotland. I can't believe everything that I have in 24 hours.

My email is mikewinchester@comast.net. I live in Lake Oswego, Oregon. USA

Winchester Family Tree DNA Project

If you know of a male Winchester with documented descendancy that might link to one of the male Winchesters arriving 1600s-1700s into Colonial MA, MD, VA, NC or SC, please advise them we need them to join the Winchester FTDNA Project. For details regarding objectives and findings to date see http://www.familytreedna.com/public/winchesterfamilyDNAproje...

At this point we are Haplogroup R1b1a2A - common in lower England and Haplogroup I1 - common in counties bordering south side Moray Firth and especially western Norway and northern Denmark. We speculate New England Winchesters from south England and Maryland & North Carolina from Scotland.

The project will pay for the initial Y-DNA 12 basic test @ $59 and the member can then add more detailed tests later as they desire. Must contact me via email to set up details.

Sam Winchester [google sam winchester ncsu]
Warren Winchester
Co-Administrators

I recently learned that my relative, Olive May Winchester, was bequeathed money from the Winchester arms family. She was the daughter of Charles Winchester, brother of my great grandmother. Do you know the relatioship of Charles or Olive to Oliver Fisher Wichester?

Carl Smith
