I have the same information on this family. My father is a Windal, I believe a direct decendant of this John Windal. Only three Windal men remain in our family.
Family folklore has a split in the family, two brothers argued, separating the family at some time. One brother may have changed the spelling of the last name.
John was a land surveyor, I believe.

Dear Marie,
I'm relation of R.L. Windle first marriage to Lucinda Jane Clinton, they had five children, and Cora Jane Windle is my relation who was born 1871. I would really like to find more information about R.L. during the Civil War. I have copies of his application for the Confederate Soldiers' Home in Feb. 1924. I also know that he was in the Missouri Guard then the C.S.A. I didn't know that he was married a third time, maybe there is no connection. I haven't seen the name MAHALIA BUTLER in any of material, but I will look & ask again.

Sevier & Hawkins names I know we are related too. Gen. John Sevier!
Any help would be great, I'm real new to this and kinda dumb about it!!
Karri Hickey (Knudson)

I have just started to look at Hilda M Butler, who married John Thomas Windle, however I am not sure she is MY Hilda M and wonder if you know what Hilda's parents names were. If they were William & Harriett we are in Business. I found the death of a John Thomas Windle in 1965 at Manilla (is that your Gfather) I also note that when Hilda married 1932 the marriage was registered as John T Windle and John M Jack, why I don't know but the reg Number is the same for both entries. I look forward to hearing from you soon. i am of to the archives tomorrow to see if I can shed more light on this couple. regards Lela

James Windle in Hennepin, Minnesota in 1857

I found two records who are probably the same person living in St. Anthony in 1857:
James Windall born 1825 in N.B.
James Windell 28 born 1829 in N.B. with the Donhue family, also from N.B. I believe this may be New Brunswick, Canada.
I can find no further trace of this man. My James was said to have been heading to the gold mines up north.
James did have a brother living in Freesoil, Michigan.

I am looking for for anyone who has a connection to the Windle family of the Hunter area, Upper Hunter, Riverina, Central and Inner N.S.W., Rhylstone, Kandos etc... I am the youngest daughter of Rodney Windle, My grandfather was John Thomas Windle who married Hilda May Butler (1932) and they had 4 children: John Windle Jnr, Robert Windle, Rodney Windle and Marjorie Windle. Hilda had a child to a previous relationship, her name was Betty... she was my aunty and she died a couple of weeks ago, aged 83. What family I know are significantly older than me, and I just want to find who/where they are.

I don't know much else as my grandparents died quite a while before I was born...this I guess, is a stepping stone.

I am looking for info on John Windal. He was born in Kent County 1805 and died in Pike County Ohio in Mar 1870. He married Jane Brown in 02 Jan 1828 Kent County Delaware. It states on the census that his parents were born in Delaware. I found a William Windal married a Mary Laws in 6, June 1804. I also found a William Windal married Mary Snow 04 Mar 1847. John moved to Ohio in 1840? Did his siblings move with him?
John's wife, Jane was still alive on the 1880 census Pike County Ohio.
last name of Windle is originated from Germany

I am already a member of the Wendel/Windle website. Have you considered joining? While it is primarily for those of us of German descent, there are others who are members that are English and Irish. You might just find some help there. If you're interested, e-mail me directly at blpurdy@sbcglobal.net and I'll send you an invitation. If not, good luck in your search!

I know that my family was in Ireland for 3 generations at least, until my father left in about 1936 and he used to maintain that the family went over from England with Oliver Cromwell and then 'went native'. Can't confirm that last piece of information. There are also a significant number of Windles in the North of England. All this is probably fairly irrelevant to you, I guess.

You probably know that Bill windle's website in Myfamily.com is a good source of information about the German Windle branch. If you have not had contact then e-mail him on BWINDLE27OHMIILTX@myfamily.com. He is very helpful and very enthusiastic.

Good luck,

James.

Thanks for the response. I'm really not positive, but I believe they are German. I had noticed several different Family Crests and I wasn't sure which one was accurate. It makes sense that the different crests come from different regions.

I haven't gotten this far in my research yet. I will definately keep this for reference though. I am missing the link between my g-g-grandfather and possibly John/Mary Magdalen Windle. From what I have been able to research it appears one of their sons is my link....I just need to find him. It's been really difficult to find more since all my research has to be done online.

Thanks for the info! You have been very helpful!!
~Amy

Although they may be connected in Ireland I'm afraid I have no way of knowing that.
Your Edward is too young I would think to be a brother of Thomas. My Windles tended to use the same names over and over again like Hugh and Daniel as well as Thomas and Robert. There has never to my knowledge been an Edward.
Do you know where in Canada the daughter was born?
Sorry, I'm no help!

Could you provide dates, please?
It is possible that Thomas had a brother who came with him and disappeared. This was a story in one of the Windle families but not mine.

I belong to a Wendel/Windle family website. We have a Jacob Hillyard Windle b. 8 July 1831 in Frederick County, VA married to Sarah A. James b. 6 May 1836 in Scioto Co., OH in our database. If you would like, contact me directly (blpurdy@sbcglobal.net) and I will send you an invitation to the site. I'm SURE you will find relatives of this line there and the database we have could probably give you a great deal of information on this line. We show James' father as Nicholas Hetrick Windle, Nicholas father as John Windle, and John's father as Samuel. I descend from the Samuel line through another son, Peter.

Windle's from Greenbrier WV

I am the granddaughter of Charles Andrew Windle (A.K.A. Andy). Charles was born in 1875 and married Nellie Boggess in 1928, in Greenbrier Co. WV. The parents of Charles were Thomas and Matilda Gibson, married in 1866. The children of Thomas and Matilda that I know for certain were; Mary, Joseph, Henry, Margaret, Virginia, and Charles. The parents of Thomas were William and Cynthea Anne (A.K.A. Cinthy and C.A.) Windle. I also know that Charles and Nellie changed the spelling of the Windle surname to Wendell sometime around 1940. (Not really sure why that happened.) I would love to have any info you may have on this family line. I have a little more than listed, but not much.

Thanks,
Amy

P.S. Bill Windle, I receive your email updates, but I am unable to access the site. Can you re-invite me, please?
I have researched Richard and Bridget Foley, they are my great grandparents. Richard and Bridget both died in Brantford Ontario. Their son Norman was my grandfather. Bridegts father was Daniel, I believe her mother was Jane. Daniel father was Richard Foley and his mother was Mary. They were from Ireland.
