SCHSR Article on English Origins of Barnabas Wines and Probable Wife Anna Eddy

Barnabas Wines of Watertown and later Southold, New York, is the patriarch immigrant of that line of Wines descendants in America.

In the Suffolk County Historical Society Register, Vol 2, No 1, Jun 1976, Riverhead, NY, there is an article:

Barnabas Wines of Ipswich, England, by Edward Irving Wines, Jr on pp 1-2.

This article presents information relative to supporting:

1) His parents were Charles Wines, who married Prudence Beacon on 4 Sep 1599, recorded in the Parish Register of St Nicholas Church, Ipswich, Suffolk, England (Parish Register Society, Vol VII, 1897)

2) That couple had 3 christenings in that record:

Charles Wines, 05/18/1600
Barnabas Wines, 02/14/1602 (presumably Old Style)
John Wines, 09/10/1604

3) Subsequent records in that register were:

Charles Wines, son of Charles, buried 7 Dec 1609

Charles Wines, married Mary Browne, 3 Jun 1656

He goes on to present information that supports the assertion that the Barnabas Wines shown above is the same Barnabas Wines who was later in New England and in Southold, New York. The information is not definitive, but based on: "similarity of names (particularly a daughter named Prudence, same as the mother above), coincidence of time and place, and the relative rarity of the name "Barnabas"."
____________________

He then goes onto to review information about Barnabas in New England including the assertion of his being married to Anna Eddy, to which he says:

"The basis for thinking that Hannah (Anna) Eddy was the wife of Barnabas Wines is the will of Marie (Mary) Benjamin, daughter of John and Abigail (Eddy) Benjamin, dated 16 May 1646 at Watertown, Mass (Document No 41, Suffolk Co, Mass Wills, vol 1, p 38, old series) which gave "to my Ante Winds one Cow" and to my Cosson (sic Cousin) Ane Wyes my best wascote"

_______________________

Also, see information about this match in "The Eddy Family in America", which shows on pg 21 a sketch on the family, presenting also sketches on the children of Barnabas and Anna (Eddy) Wines.

_________________________

The SCHSR article, which contains more details than I am presenting here, may be obtained:

1) from me

2) from Allen County Library
http://www.genealogycenter.org/pdf/ArticleRequest.pdf

3) Libraries that may have issues of the SCHSR.
___________________

The last volume of the The Great Migration (Continues...) by Robert Charles Anderson was recently issued, containing people with the last names beginning in W. I have not seen that volume yet, but the list of names in that volume indicates an article about Barnabas Wines is included. It may contain additional information about Barnabas Wines. This reference would be considered to be the "latest and greatest" source for him.

Frances Hallock md Barnabas Wines 1851 - Daughter of Who??`

The Woodhull Genealogy, pg 139 shows that a son of Barnabas Wines and first wife Temperance Woodhull was:

"(3.) Barnabas Wines, born April 14, 1823; married in February, 1851, Frances M. Hallock. He died February 8, 1903."

The 1928 Hallock Genealogy, pg 301, indicates that this Frances M Hallock was the daughter of Nathan Tuthill and Mary R (Dunster) Hallock, giving a marriage date of Feb 5, 1851.

However, in the 1860 census household of this Nathan Tuthill Hallock is his 30 year old daughter, Francis Hallock - while Barnabas shows in another census entry with his wife Francis Wines, age 29.

This poses a problem for the asserted parents of the wife of Barnabas Wines to be Nathan Tuthill Hallock and wife.

___________________

I have seen people counted twice in the census before, like as if Francis may have gone to her parents home for awhile to take care of a sick person back home, or a domestic problem, or whatever. But Francis is in her folk's home with her maiden name Hallock.

I have not located where the source for the Feb 5, 1851 marriage comes from. Is there a marriage record or bible record that might show the parents? Did Nathan Tuthill Hallock's will, or some other evidence leave a clue??

Thanks for your support.

Bill, do you have a connection to the Wine families that were in Greenbrier Co that moved on to Braxton Co, VA/WVA in the early 1800's?
My line starts with George Wine, b abt 1776 who married Rebecca Williams in Greenbrier Co in 1811 which is recorded.
His children include Benijah or Benjamin who married Nancy Williams in May, 1836 also in Braxton Co records.
Children of Benjamin include George Perry Wine, who is my great grand father. George Perry Wine married Martha Ann Rose and they were the parents of my grandfather, Adam Given Wine who married Bessie Mae Radcliff in Nicholas Co WV

I am looking for DNA connections or any documented source that lets me know which Wine family those who settled in Braxton Co came from.

Just want to find the roots and this is where I get the brick wall, just have not found the paper trail yet.

Any help is most appreciated. I do not have a father listed for the George Wine who was born abt 1776 in Va. and do not find him in the families listed with the Wine families that settled in Shenandoah, Va. (the Michael Wine line)

Wade in 1849). Were they sons of Abner?

In household #720 there was Aron Roberson and Mary (Wines) - the latter born about 1824 in NC. Aaron and Mary were married in 1844. Was Mary a daughter of Abner Wines?

Has anyone traced the descendants of Alfred, William and Mary?

Thanks

Joseph Wines would have been my Gr. Gr. Gr. grandfather had a Daughter and 2 sons. His daughter maude's death record lists the mother as an Isobeth Mcguire Though i was told she was a pettyjohn. I am guessing through census she was really Ann E. Joseph has been a brick wall for my family for years. We can trace to him but nothing past.

Henry marr Dora Mae Moore ( also need her parents & siblings ) abt 1905. Their dau Lydia V. was b abt 1911 in MD & marr John Collins in Fauquier Co abt 1925. Do not have John's parents & siblings or childen for him & Lydia.
I have traced my family to Charles Wines, born abt 1804 in NY. I know that he moved to Cincinnati, worked as a grocer and had several children (no wife) with him in the 1860 census: Caroline E. and Benjamin F. were born in NY. Augusta and George were born in Ohio. Caroline was my ggreat grandmother, married to Samuel Lumley.

Any help or suggestions in finding more information about Charles or ancestors before him would be much appreciated.

Thank you!

obit for Elizabeth Wines Semans, born 1849 Montreal, Canada; died 1936 Kansas

Minneapolis Messenger, Ottawa County, Kansas, Jan. 2, 1936, page 8:
ELIZABETH A. SEMANS
Elizabeth Ann Wines was born near Montreal, Canada, on April 26, 1849. During her girlhood the family moved to Wisconsin and later to Minnesota, where she grew to womanhood. There she received her secondary education in an academy. For that day her education was very complete and thorough and Christian. Her training and her sane philosophy of life formed the basis of her beautiful character.
In Minnesota she taught several terms of school and there also she met and married Solomon Luther Semans. She and her sister, Charlotte, who is now Mrs. Charlotte Austin of Salina, had a double wedding.
After making their home in Minnesota for several years, Mr. and Mrs. Semans, with their two young children, moved to Kansas, where Mrs. Semans' parents had already located.
At Coursen's Grove, near Simpson, they took a homestead, and Mr. Semans, along with his farming, followed the blacksmith's trade. While there he took up the work of the Christian ministry and their itinerancy began. In a fine and faithful service Mrs. Semans with her family occupied numerous parsonage homes among which were those of Simpson and Glasco, Miltonvale, Culver, Brookville, Marquette, Lebanon, Norton, Delphos, Scandia, Claflin and Jamestown.
After her husband's death in 1911, Mrs. Semans lived in her own home in Salina until a few years ago when she came to Minneapolis, to make her home with her daughter, Mrs. A.R. Miller.
Her seven children are all living: Dr. A. L. Semans of Spencer, Iowa; Mrs. W.A. Lesley of Hiwasse, Arkansas; Mrs. L.R. Fansler of Independence, Kansas; Mrs. A.R.
Just a quick message,
I've spotted my granddad’s name in that list above, his name was Henry Leonard Asquith Wines.

I'm Leonard Henry Asquith Wines, I never knew my granddad but I believe he died when I was a baby (early 80's).

I'm eager to start tracing my family tree although I don’t know where to start, as I don't speak to my father so don't have much information.

I know Henry LA Wines married Doris Nelly (My Granma) but not much more.

Regards,

Leonard HA Wines
Hello, Its been so long since I posted here I'd completely forgotten about it! Do you have an email address I could contact you through? As Im sure you've read, David Wine's daughter, Rebecca Jane Wine, is my great great grandmother.
I had the last name spelled incorrectly, the way some family had pronounced it to me when I was originally researching this line, was "Wines". I think it just came out of the way they spoke it and over time family that didnt know any better thought it was Wines instead of Wine.

Thank you for your reply about the Wine family. I have quite a bit of decendants from the Culpeper area since I go back to the germanna germans. I know that the Wines name is german but I think they came to the Culpeper area later than mine. I was surprized to find a connection to the Culpeper/Fauquire Wines & my husbands Essex Taylors. What I am seeking is the parents & siblings of James E. Wines b abt 1850 in Fauquier Co. I'm sure all the Wines are connected but James is as far as I have back. Any info appreciated.
Ollie
