When I googled my father's name your request for information on Leila Winfield came up. My father is Richard Percy Winfield. I will look at information I have. I am only aware that he had an Aunt name Leila Winfield and that was also my sister's name. I am not aware that Ida Simmons Winfield had a daughter named leila and would be interested if she did.

I would be glad to follow up with you.

That the said Jarvis Wingfield being in his life time and at the time of his decease possesed of a considerable personal estate consisting of sundry valuable slaves and other things departed this life on or about the ...... day of March one thousand seven hundred and fifty six Intestate leaving Hannah Wingfield his widow and ?relict? and William Wingfield his oldest son and heir at law. That Whereas by one Act of Assembly made in the year ...... it was among other things enacted "That when any person dies intestate, his widow shall have one full and equal third part of all of his slaves which upon her petition to the Court, granting Certificate of Administration of her husbands Estate, shall be assigned to her by persons for that purpose to be nominated and appointed by the said court; she shall hold such slave and slaves and their increase, during her natural life, and after her death, the said slaves and their increase which shall then be living shall be appraised and shall descend to and be vested in the heir at law of the intestate, but he shall be answerable to the other children or the legal representatives for their proportionable value of the said slaves, in the same manner as is herein after directed for the other remaining slaves" "And the other remaining slaves of the intestate shall be immediately vested in his heir, but he shall be answerable to the other children or their legal representatives for their proportionable part of the increase value of such remaining slaves, in the same manner as by this act is directed for the distribution of the other personal estate of the intestate" Your orator further show that struck out portion(they have in a friendly manner applied both ) after the decease of the said Jarvis Wingfield at a court held for this county on the .....day of....In the year of our lord One thousand seven hundred & fifty six Administration of the estate of the said Jarvis Wingfield was committed to the said Wm. Wingfield who whereupon conceiving himself to have authority to do so, did of his own accord assign to the said Hannah Wingfielld slaves as her third part, whereas your orator (illegible, may be apportion?) that the said slaves are more than the said Hannah's full an equal third part of the slaves whereof the said Jervis died possessed, and that by the above recited Clause of the Act of Assembly the said William had no power to do so. Your orator further show that they have after in a friendly manner applied to the said Wm. to consent that such distribution of the slaves and other personal estate of the said Jarvis should be made by this worshipful court should be directed And your orator further further show that they have in a friendly manner likewise applied to the said Hannah to redeliver the said slaves assigned her by the said Wm and to petition this worshipful to appoint persons to assign? This got the other surviving children mad and they filed suit to get them back or distributed.
I also had a bi-racial Winfield in my family. From VA supposably Sussex or Petersburg. My Great-Grandfather Harold Winfield. His mother was a Jewish lady. We really have no info on his or her either. We know he married a lady name Josephina Winfield and that's all. His son was Harold and Arthur Winfield. Arthur Winfield was my grandfather and lived in Philadelphia, PA. We think they also had sister Martha who may have had a different father or mother. She may have been Martha Mason.

Wow. This is why I'm having a hard time locating. My family are descendants from both Slave and White Jewish.. thinking Massenburgs. My mother is Esther Winfield and her brother was Arthur Winfield. Their Father was Arthur Winfield <-- My Grandfather. His Parents where Harold and Josephina Winfield. They had another son Harold Winfield. <---My Grandfathers Brother (My mothers' Uncle). They were from some part of VA originally. Petersburg and/or Sussex. My mom says her Great-Grandmother was Jewish. This is odd for you didn't her of a white woman with a black man at all back then. My mom did say she came all the way to from VA to Philadelphia to visit them and that it was real hush hush. She also said her Grandfather looked Mixed so it could of been his mother, but she is not sure. She also said she had an Aunt Martha who would come up to visit. I know of the lineage of Charles Winfield, but Harold is missing. Also know of the Massenburgs but can't find the connection. Anything you got to assist would be so helpful.

Winfield Family who migrated from Mecklenburg County Va to Anson County, NC

I am a descendent of Sarah Winfield and Job Davis of Stanly County/previous Montgomery County/previous Anson County (the county changed names 3 times during their span on the property) North Carolina. Both were born in Mecklenburg County Virgina in 1773. Sarah was the Daughter of Peter Winfield and Charlotte Freeman. Charlotte was the daughter of Arthur Freeman. Her sister Jemima Freeman was the 1st wife of Peter's brother Joshua. Charlotte and Jemima's brother Henry married Elizabeth (Betty) Thrower and when Jemima passed, her widower Joshua married Betty's sister Rebecca Thrower. It gets even more confusing as Peter had a cousin also named Peter Winfield (son of William) who had a daughter named Sarah.

I am looking for any information on the Anson County branch of the Winfield's and also trying to find the parents of Job Davis, Sarah Winfield's second husband. Job and her father Peter Winfield both signed the petition to separate Anson and Montgomery Counties in 1799. Peter had grants to the land along the Rocky River in the 1770's. Several families came from Mecklenburg County to this area about the same time, Allen's, Randall's, Lilly's, Vanhoose's, Lee's, Preslar's, Culpeppers, Crumps and Ingrams. And the family of Sarah's first husband, Richard Howell. Sarah and Richard had two children, Peter and Charlotte Howell. She had 4 sons with Job Davis: Edward Winfield Davis, Henry Davis, Merrit (or Marriott) Freeman Davis and James M (I believe the M stood for Monroe) Davis. Any information on the Davis or Winfield families would be much appreciated.

Hi, My name is Bill Winfield and my E-Mail address is bill@winfields.com.au. My Great Grandfather was Thomas Winfield who was convicted at Norfolk, Bourough of Kings Lynn Quarter Sessions on 24/10/1825. He was transported to Van Diemans Land where he served 14 years jail. When released he married Ann Gibney an Irish migrant and they had 6 sons and one daughter. I believe he died in Victoria and could be buried in the Maryborough Cemetry in Victoria. I do not know his age, who his parents were or if he had brothers and sisters, where they lived or what work he did etc. Can you help me to find out more information about the Winfields? I look foreward to your early reply. Bill Winfield.

I wonder if Lucy was related to these Rottenberrys?

Does the following match your records?

Nancy Fannin born around 1791. Nancy was still living at the age of 89 during the 1880 census.

Thomas & Nancy had a daughter, Sarah A. T. Atkinson, who was born around 1815.

William Winfield was born in 1796 in Virginia. William & Nancy had two children:

i. John Anderson Winfield (Windfield), a Physician, was born April 4, 1828. He married Elizabeth M. Feild who was born in 1834. John A. Winfield died on October 5, 1896 at Shady Oaks, Sussex Co., Va.

John & Elizabeth had the following children:

a. George W. Winfield born October 4, 1858 and died on July 7, 1931. He married Fannie Mason born October of 1855 and had five children:
1a. Susan Mason Winfield born June of 1882
2a. Elizabeth Winfield born 1885
3a.
I have William Winfield (b. abt 1796 d. 1862) married to Nancy Fannin Atkinson. I have him as the son of William Winfield (6 Nov 1761 - bef 1814) and the grandson of John Winfield and Lucy Rottenbury. I believe that William and Nancy Fannin Atkinson Winfield lived at Shady Oaks in Sussex County Virginia. I believe you can find information on their home at the Library of Virginia website as well as in an old book on historic homes of sussex and dinwiddie counties.

I do not have any direct information, but there were certainly rumors and dis-inheritances related to bi-racial relationships in the family. The tough part is that if the family did not want to talk about something or didn't approve of something they would basically just erase it from memory/history.

I have reviewed the slave schedules, but there are no names. My ggrandfather was named Alexander and he was born May 9, 1847 in Sussex County, near Petersburg. Do you have any records documenting manumission of any slaves? I have reason to believe he was either freed, or was born to a free woman. Also, he may have been biracial. Any info would be appreciated! Thanks

I am directly descended from one of the many farm-owning branches of the Winfield family in Virginia. I have been able to put together a lot of information on the family and several slave schedules in my tree. My branch of the family had farms on border of Dinwiddie and Sussex counties in Virginia.

Many former slaves took the names of their masters after the Civil War (or whenever they were freed.) This was definitely the case with the Winfield family in Virginia as there are still black Winfields living not far from Winfield family farms.

hello, I am currently doing a bit of research on the Winfield family.I am not sure if you will find this info useful but I have come across a Patrick Garrett Winfield born in 1894. have you tried looking in the Australian Archives? Patrick's next of kin was listed as a Beatrice Winfield, not sure if this was his wife or his mother. He was born in the Northcote area. Patrick Garrett served in the citizens military forces between 1939 - 1948.

best wishes
Sirena Conroy

Winfields in NC

Looking for MAry Winfield that married Henry JAckson in 1853 in Granville Co., NC. I think they left NC for the west but not sure where.
Also looking for Winfield Morgan that married Piety Weathers in Granville Co., NC. I am almost certain that Winfield Morgan and Mary Winfield are related.
I am trying to connect the Jackson's that married into this group. I believe that the Winfields migrated down into NC from Brunswick Co., VA alongwith the Jacksons. They seem to have intermarried alot with the Jacksons, Weathers, Winstons, and Morgans.

Thomas Garret Winfield

Hi, My name is William (Bill)Winfield and I am searching for information about my Great Grandfather Thomas Garret Winfield. I know Thomas Winfield was convicted at Norfolk, Borough of Kings Lynn Quarter Session to serve a sentence of 14 years and departed London on 12/04/1826 for Van Diemans Land which is now Tasmania in Australia. No mention of the name Garret appears except on his wedding certificate. I noted your comment that you had a lot of information about the Winfields, does Thomas Garret Winfield appear anywhere in your findings? Can you help me ? Reguards Bill Winfield.
