I too am looking for any Wingate's in this area. My g-grandmother was Elizabeth/Lizzie Winget. I know she married a Tyre and they lived in Hamilton County, Florida for a while. They also lived in Jackson County, Florida. Her father was A.G. Wingate. Might have been Andrew G. and the G might have stood for Grean. His father was Andrew Wingate and his mother was Elizabeth.

I am not sure what line your Wingate's are but I wonder if there is a connection as Blountstown is not far from where I live.

If anyone has info on my Wingate's please feel free to email me at elizabeth_edenfield@hotmail.com
Thank you.
Elizabeth C.
Re: Wingate in early Georgia: census, marriages, tax, deeds, etc

I am posting re: this in you post.
p.270
Winget, G B (m) 24
, Elizabeth 20
, George 2
NOTE: Green B Winget md E Newmans 1844 Houston Co GA
NOTE: Is this Grean Wingate, age 60?, listed in 1870 Thomas Co GA??

I do not belive that this is the same person in Thomas County. If you look at that census there is no George listed. Could be he passed away. Not sure. I have been doing my Winget research as my mother's father's mother was a Winget. I have come across some info on this. Here is what I have so far on my Winget. I belive that this Grean Winget is my Andrew G. Winget in Thomas County census 1870.

My Great Grand mother was Lizzie Winget born: 1885 (I belive in Georgia) she died March 24 1934. She is buried at Cypress Cemetery in Jackson County, Florida.
She married Mathew A. Tyre on Jan 2 1908. She might also be known by Elizabeth.

Her Father was A.G. Wingett Born Oct 12 1862 (Which matches the year for the 1870 Thomas County census refrenced above). He passed away April 6 1918. He is also buried at the Cypress Cemetery.
He married a Sallie (or Sarah E.) ( I have not got clear info on this. I just found Sallie on a Jackson County Census after his death where she was living with MA and Lizzie Tyre and relationship was mother-in-law.)

A.G. Winget's father was Andrew G. Winget. I have put him being born around 1810, by the 1810 census. He was married to an Elizabeth, which is also in the 1870 census. I am guessing that his middle name was Grean and this would reflect that census.

I know that my grandfather always told me his grandfathers name was Grean, so this would make sence to me. I have not gotten any futher in my research as I can not find them in any 1860 census or in any 1880 census.
If anyone has Any information it would be greatly appreciated. I have just, with in the last 2 weeks, found this information.

You can email me at elizabeth_edenfield@hotmail.com as well.

Thank you,
Elizabeth Edenfield
Fannie Herron Wingate Poem

Hi,

I found a partially eaten magazine behind a false wall in my 1918 home. I found this poem written by Fannie Herron Wingate - not sure if she is a relation of yours, but if so I thought you would want to have it.
Today

Today is your great day! The day of days.
The beauteous Dawn, with rosy smiling face,
Unto the waking earth God’s message brought,
Like poem of a rare symphonic grace:
The Beautiful Today

The yesterdays were but stepping-stones
By which you climbed to reach the great Today.
Forget then all the sorrows, all the cares
O’er joy alone let memory hold away!
The present holds your good!

Tomorrow is a dream. Let not its lure
Make dull the golden minutes of this hour.
Accept God’s gift, accept it, live it, love
And fill it with love’s service, through His power!
The wonderful Today!
-Fannie Herron Wingate
Hello Adrian
I have been trying to research the Wingate side of my father William's family. His mother Margaret Wingate(Peggy), born 1902, had a brother Charles born 1913 and their parents were Charles Wingate & Hannah Henderson. My grandmother was the oldest of 11 children. She married my grandfather Robert Paul and they had 9 children, my father being the oldest. Do you think we have the same tree?
regards Beverley

Re: Walker Wingate - Newton TX

At the time of emancipation, Judge David Robert Wingate owned 100 slaves, many of whom took his last name as their own. DRW and his family owned a plantation, farm and saw mills in Newton and Orange going as far back as about 1852. When he and his caravan/convoy of families moved to Newton County that year from Mississippi, they did so with a combined 165 slaves. I assume that any Wingate from east Texas of African ethnicity is a descendant of those Wingate slaves. I don't know a whole lot, but I would be happy to help in any way I can. DRW was my great, great grandfather. Peter Wingate peterwingate64@gmail.com

Yes David R. Wingate is your great great great grandfather because my grandmother said that your great great great grandad was always living near David R. Wingate because he gave his slaves land and he payed them wages and they built they're homes by him. In the south it was against the law to pay your slaves, to teach them reading or writing ,and piano. He had to move and relocate when they found out Aunt Caroline was teaching them. The slaves loved him so much when he moved the slaves moved with him.

Is your George Wingate the son of Peter Wingate, who was born in MD? If so, and George lived in the Springfield, OH area in the mid 1800s, he may be the brother of my great-great-grandmother. I have a photo of this George Wingate and his wife. Let me know if you think your George Wingate is the same as the one I've described. I'd be happy to share the photos if they're a match.
email me andrina_womack@hotmail.com I have more on the Wingates then most seem to have. I started with William Bacot Wingate as he married Isabella Ann Blackwell. I believe they will be in my Blackwell and Burch book when I print it. They moved to Wake Forest and attended and was Dean of the college in that side of the family. A lot were school teachers or Deans or Attorney's in the family.

Walker Wingate - Newton TX

Looking for the parents of my ggrandfather, Walker Wingate,
b. Jan 1865 probably in Newton, TX where he lived. He is listed as either black or mulatto in the census. The birthplace of both parents is listed as Texas. He married Charlotte Alfred (or Alford) Wingate (her ethnicity was either black/native american or black/white) in 1890. Marriage record shows him as W. W. Wingate. 1900 and 1910 census show him as a farmer who owned his land without a mortgage. He probably died between 1900 and 1910 as by the 1910 census Charlotte is listed as a widow.

Looking for my ancestor Elizabeth Wingate, born between 1817-1820 in Maryland or Delaware or Pennsylvania or even England; married William (or John) Ash probably about 1838-1840. My ancestor, her son, Charles Joshua Ash, was born in Philadelphia about 1840; family moved to Baltimore by late 1840s, and later (1860s) to Washington, D.C. I don't know anything about the Wingate (Winget?) family she came from. If any of this sounds similar to someone in your family tree I'd love to hear from you!

Re: Judge David R. Wingate

Hi Krissy.

No, I haven't come across him. But I do have a couple of suggestions. Have you contacted the Texas Slavery Project? Their URL is: http://www.texasslaveryproject.org/

Their information is targeted at the years of 1820 through 1850 in Texas, but they may be a good resource for help.

Through them, I exchanged emails with an academic named Andrew Torget. His email is: andrewtorget@gmail.com

He is very knowledgeable and helpful. He's located in the Denton area of North Texas.

The only name of a former slave that I know about is a man named Boston. He was the subject of a lawsuit between Robert Potter Wingate and his brother Edward Taylor Wingate.

I don't know if, or how many, slaves were acquired after the Wingates' arrival to Texas in 1852. I do know that David Robert Wingate and his wife Caroline Morgan Wingate acquired a number of slaves by way of her inheriting a plantation in the area of Pearl River, Mississippi. That was the Wheat estate, I believe, that she inherited through her grandfather's death (there was a lawsuit in Mississippi at the time brought by her distant relatives contesting the award). I know there were at least 7 or 8 slaves that she inherited.

Also, if I am not mistaken, I thought that Robert Potter Wingate's father, Walter Wingate, may have briefly traded in slaves coming from the Darlington, SC area over to the Alabama-Mississippi area.

Also, people tend to forget about the wives' families. Robert Potter Wingate's first wife, Mary Pherobee Kelley was the daughter of an Irishman, David O'Kelley, of the Darlington, SC area. And he owned slaves. That might be a good place for you to look, back into those wives' families. You are welcome to log onto my ancestry.com family tree as a family member so that you can trace back each Wingate. I haven't done the best job of filling out info for all of the wives, but it's a work in progress.

ID: Peter_Wingate
Password: burlhorse70

And I'll send you an invite via ancestr.com.

I have found that a number of the wills, especially the Wingates at Lockwood's Folly River area in NC, and into SC, listed bequeathed slaves, often by first name.

I hope that is helpful in some way. If I come across any information that might be even remotely helpful, I'll be sure to send it to you.

Good luck in your research. If you can think of anything else, please let me know. You never know what's out there.

Peter Wingate
(540) 336-9705
