My Great-Grandfather was Sydney Lambert Winstanley, married to Florence Johnson, my Grandfather was Frederick Joseph Winstanley I , and my father is Frederick Joseph Winstanley II. This is for anyone interested in fabulous old family photos!!!! I have so many, some from the 1800's..i am interested in knowing more about my great-grandfather, sydney lambert Winstanley's siblings and especially his parents. My great grandfather married a nurse, Florence Johnson and his parents were set against it , believing that he was marrying beneath his "class", and so they married anyway and moved to Cananda with her family already there and eventually moved to Detroit. I live w/in a few miles of where my great granfather Sydney was killed walking to buy a newspaper by a drunk driver..My father gave me so many old family documents and photos and I am very interested in knowing about the Winstanley's my great grandfather descended from. As far as I know they lived in Birkenhead accross the Mersey River from Liverpool and were pretty upper-class with a thriving family business. Perhaps Rebecca Vancamp and I are related???? Exciting stuff!!!

My mother's maiden name is Maud Winstanley b1920. I have traced her direct ancestors back to my gt gt gt grandfather Samuel. According to the IGI he was born in Pemberton, Lancs in 1768 but no parents names were given.
He enlisted in the Foot Guards 1798 (where?); was in London by Dec 1799; married, Jane Morgan March 1800; and had at least 4 children - John Thomas 1803, Elizabeth (possibly a nun), Samuel 1811 and Mary Ann 1814.
Although my tree is private, I have some records relating to his army days and descendants (Westminster area) which I am willing to share.
Waiting in hope, Diane

You really need to put in more info, dates, parents, place of birth etc., I have a Jane in my Winstanley line too but I don't know who she married!

Hi, my grandfather was Samuel Winstanley and my grandmother was Beatrice Sudworth. As far as I know they came to Canada around 1911. As for John I have never heard of him.My grandfather died in 1948. He worked in the mines in Glace Bay Nova Scotia. What ever happen to John and why did he not come with them? Its puzzling and it has my interest going full tilt. One of they children was born in Wigan and came to Canada when he was 8moths old. They had ten other children and adopted one girl. Let me know what you can. Thanks Ron Winstanley.

Hi Peter,

The WINSTANLEY's are a frustrating bunch, they seemed to have a very small selection of Christian names and there were so many of them! I have the same problem with mine, William and James being the favoured names all down the line apparently.

I started a WINSTANLEY Group November 2006, and we have 21 members so far, some with ancestors in Wigan, Pemberton and Orrell, if you would care to join us, please contact me direct and I will send an invitation direct from the website.
JackieSBrooks

Peter - My family did not have anyone that emigrated. They were all in and around Pemberton from 1780 - where my researches have stopped because of proving a mother's name to Henry. It is a fact that the Wigan area has more than enough Winstanleys. Good luck with your researches.
Dorothy

My Grandfather on my mothers side was Alfred Allen Winstanley married to Emily Colenso.
I have information on this branch of the family.
Going back up the Winstanley line as you have stated was Henry married to Annie Allen in 1854 and his father was William Born 18 Nov 1788 died 7 Feb 1842. married to Elizabeth Finch in 1817.
His father may have been Edward Winstanley-Smith b 14 March 1761.

My records show your Henry as a brother to AA Winstanley married to a Louisa with no surname. They appear to have had 11 children of whom I have christian names but little else. one daughter is Mary Jane(Kit).
As your post is over 18 months ago I am not sure if you will get this reply.
I am live in Melbourne.

Peter

I am researching Winstanleys in Liverpool, Lancashire and in Cheshire.
This is probably complete coincidence, but when looking through the 1841 census for Liverpool, Lancashire, England, I can across Ebenezer Ponck, 40, tailor, and his family, living next door to Thomas Winstanley age 3 & possibly his mother Margaret Winstanley, 25, milliner. Ebenezer was not born in the county of Lancashire.
Winstanley is a Lancashire name, but I have never come across Ponck before.

Details from birth certifiactes

Registration District of West Derby. 1890 birth in the sub-district of Wavertree in the County of Lancaster. No.145
Born 17th March 1890 at 12 Upper Cross Street, Wavertree, Sarah, girl, father William Winstanley, Railway labourer, mother Margaret Winstanley, formerly Ross, (she was also the informant on 16th May 1890)

Registration District of West Derby. 1896 birth in the sub-district of Everton North in the County of Liverpool. No.253
Born 16th april 1896 at 14 Court, Great Homer Street, Everton, Ellen, girl, father William Winstanley, general labourer, mother Margaret Winstanley formerly Ross (she was also the informant on 8th June 1896).

As William has gone from being a railway labourer in Wavertree to a general labourer in a Court in Everton, this suggests a downturn in the family's fortunes. The courts were a form of housing notorious at those times. An entrance off the street led to a small courtyard with numerous houses built round it- they were all one building, flats, built back to back with their neighbours so the only windows looked out onto the court. There might be 60 people living there, all sharing one outside toilet. They were the poorest slums in the city. All have been demolished now. By coincidence, the National Trust is opening to the public the only remaining back-to backs in Birmingham this summer.
hi brian
Not sure if I have already written to you or not. I have a Hannah Winstanley, born 1817 near Knutsford, cheshire to William & sarah winstanley. William was a carpenter & Hannah married Joseph Cartlidge Christian, a joiner & carpenter whose father was a cooper. Many of the Winstanleys seem to have been woodworkers. The winstanleys may have moved to liverpool to take advantage of the housebuilding boom there in the 19thC.
Have you seen the actual copies of the baptismal entries or is your info from other sources like the IGI or birth certificates? the church records sometimes give extra info, such as godparents. I can visit Liverpool records library in the evenings, but the Chester one is usually only open on weekdays, so as I work full-time I rarely go.
Bye
alison

The Winstanley member of this family is at present in hospital and should be out toward the weekend. She will get back to you shortly after she returns home.
Thanks for your patience.
I am looking for a Thomas Winstanley who had a daughter Named Flora in 1861. Family lore has it that he was a seaman and sailed under the name Stanley but no other information is available. Can you fill me in on the Maryland Winstanleys, there may be a connection. Flora (my great grandmother) married Albert Henry Siebert and lived in Columbus Ohio.
Thanks,

David R Ellis-Anwyl
ellis.anwyl@verizon.net

help and confused! Re: Winstanley's

Actually, I have not sent for my grandfather, John Edwards, birth certificate, but am working off his grandmother, Hannah's will, which I do have. I would like to find out who John Edwards parents are. I know from Hannahs will her husband was Thomas.
Their son was Charles Edwards born about 1858 and John Edwards, his son was, one of 5 children. John said his mothers name was Mary Flaherty from Ireland, that she had left them all and returned to Ireland.
I could not find this Mary, but instead found a Margaret Flatery, whose mother is Irish and named Mary! The Margaret I found also lived at the same address my grandfather was discharged to from the army.

Also, he and his brothers and sisters all listed on any official forms that their mother was Irish. So this is very confusing. The census is as clear as mud! I hope my puzzlement isn't!
thanks,
Rejoice!
Amie
