I have never been able to place him in the Virginia family of WINSTON, but assume that he is somehow connected.

Seeking info on Jordan Winston's parents. He was b 1809 in Franklin, NC. The 1830 census shows him as head of household. The census shows Gilb as the township but it is believed to be Gill or Gillburg, Franklin, NC. Ancestry.com seems to think it is Giles but NC folks say it is more likely Gillburg or Gill. His wife Delaney Walker was from the same area and they married in 1832. When they moved to AL, they appear in census records, etc. I have looked in Vance Co but couldn't find anything. They were associated with the Dents, Tharringtons and other Winstons. Isaac Winston was the bondsman for the marriage. Maybe a brother or uncle. This has been a real puzzle for the family for many years. Any help will be welcomed!

Hello,
I'm happy to help you. You have a very interesting situation in your family. I've been researching Julia Shelton Nelson tonight and found some interesting things about her. The information for her listed on Ancestry and Rootsweb is not correct and you might have some incorrect information also. Several researchers have given Julia the wrong set of parents. It looks like Julia's real name was Julina Shelton. I do not know the name of her mother yet but I do know the name of her father and her siblings. First, there is a marriage record for JULINA SHELTON to JOHN NELSON in Stokes Co., NC for 14 February 1852. The LDS has this marriage record on a Stokes Co., NC marriage record film so it is an official record. I found Julina in the 1850 Stokes, Snow Creek, NC Census living with her father, Ezekiel Shelton, age 52 and the following siblings: Joseph, age 29;, Elisha, age 27; Nathaniel, age 26; William, age 25; Margaret, age 21; Zelpha, age 19; George, age 17; JULINA, age 16; Martha, age 15; Ezekiel, age 16; Benjamin, age 12; Ruth, age 10. It looks like the mother is deceased. Next door is another child of Ezekiel named John Shelton, age 31 with his wife Katherine, age 28; and children Rachael, age 8; Nancy 6, Urana, age 4; and Mary, age 2.
Is it possible that Julina Shelton had a male child with a Winston man before she married John Nelson which would result in your DNA being from a Winston line. I saw on FamilySearch Beta that Julia had a child named William Nelson who was born 12 August 1851 in Stokes Co., NC which is quite a few months before her marriage to John Nelson. What if John Nelson took in this child as his own and gave him the Nelson name. The son William Nelson, born 12 Aug 1851 Stokes Co., NC - died 29 Dec 1935 Stokes Co., NC has a death record on FamilySearch Beta. He was a retired minister. It's just a theory but one you should persue. I do know that there were Winston's in Stokes Co. who were related to my family so it's not out of the question that Julia knew these Winston's.
I have a couple suggestions. In order to find out more about Ezekiel Shelton I think you should post a query about Ezekiel's family on the Shelton board at Rootsweb/Ancestry. This query will be picked up by a Shelton discussion group called Knights5. We talk about all things Shelton and someone in that query group will know about Ezekiel's family. I do not think Ezekiel is a DNA match to my group of Shelton's but I do know there appears to be two different DNA groups of Shelton's in Stokes Co. I can research this for you further if you would like to talk with me via email. I can also give you the web address for the Shelton DNA project results which you would find most interesting. I've not gone over them tonight for Ezekiel's group to see if a descendant has taken the test and their results are posted but I will do that for you.
I'm happy to discuss this with you further. I don't think there is any doubt that Julia is Julina Shelton, daughter of Ezekiel Shelton. I can be emailed at mmer2000@aol.com I look forward to talking with you more since I'm very interested in the Winston's and the Shelton's since I'm descended from both lines and my family was definitely in the area you are researching.
I am looking for my g.g.grandmother Julia Ann Shelton b. 1823-1828 N.C.,possibly in Rowan Co.,N.C. who md. John Nelson b. 1821 in Lincoln Co.,N.C. I can't find anything at all on my Shelton g.g.grandmother except through the dna surname matches . I have a Winston match to Lee L. Winston. I also have a match with a Jason Irby and a further match with Eldon Irby. I also have May,Knight,English,Oakes,
Parker,Morgan,Bennett,Spencer,Leggett,Reynolds,Waldrop,Stovall, and Shaw matches in my surnames. I have been researching for almost 30 years and wish desperately to find once and for all for certain who my Julia's parents were. I feel like everything else would fall into place once I find out what set of Sheltons she belongs too. The first names of David,James,Roderick,Stephen,Joseph,Wm. usually shows up in all my related searches for my Sheltons.

I am looking for any information about the family of my Grandfather, Robert Bruce Winston, Sr. (Robert B. Winston, Sr) who was born in NY on July 7th, 1914. He was the only survivor of his immediate family in the Shoa/Holocaust. He had 4 or 5 siblings that died in the war. His original last name may have been Winkelstein or similar spelling. His Aunt is the one who (living in NY I believe) changed the last name to Winston. He married Bettye June Solan Winston (Bettye S. Winston) and they live in MN and had 4 children.

We believe Robert's parents were Frances B. Winston and the only info I have about his mother is the name Berson.

His family went back to the Poland area without him before the war and they never came back. ANY information about my family would be amazing. The only Shoa survivors in my family died years ago and didn't leave info.

Thanks

I am descended from Samuel and Elizabeth Winston.Elizabeth remarried to Jeduthan Harper. My family would appreciate any copies of old paintings silhouettes and Bible records. Seek proof of marriage of their daughter Ann to a Samuel Shelton in Louisa Co., VA. Ann Winston Shelton had a son Richard, Dec.,1779, who moved to Rockingham County, NC about 1806 and resided near the Morehead Mill in early 1820's in a home owned by William Barnett, Junior believed to be a son of William and Frances Jones Barnett. The Barnetts were in Louisa Co., VA until ca. 1803 when they moved to Stokes County, NC. Wiliam Barnett is buried in Leaksville, NC and Richard Shelton and wife Frances Jones Barnett are buried in Greensboro, NC. Marie Reedy

I don't believe that Isaac Winston and Mary Dabney had any children. In my notes I show:
"About 1758 everyone around Hanover was very much astonished by the marriage of Mary Dabney to the elderly widower grandfather of Patrick Henry. She was about eighteen years of age when she married Isaac Winston. Mary always described him as a very interesting talker and as one of the most charming personalities that she ever met.

Her brothers and stepmother were much displeased about this match because of the great difference in their ages but her ever-indulgent father, Col William Dabney, said that if it were his daughter's wish, he would not voice his objections.

So greatly was Mary's stepmother displeased about her marriage that she told all of her many guests that she thought it was just pure obstinancy that caused a girl as young and beautiful as her stepdaughter to marry such an elderly man when she could have married any young man in Hanover County. These remembrances were written by Evelyn M. Ownbey who was the great grandaughter of Mary Dabney Winston Massie."

All of Isaac's children were grown by the time he married Mary Dabney.

Your notes were taken from Evelyn Jeanene Ownbey's "What Does America Mean to You?" A strange (and goofy) saga without documentation.

A bizarre tale intertwined with the supposed Mary (Dabney) Winston, Ownbey claims was the young and last wife of Isaac Winston involved with an international conspiracy by way of a World Order organization called the Black Dragon Society, who sought to ruin the reputation of Patrick Henry by revealing the true identity Mary (Dabney) Winston. How or why this would devastate Patrick Henry is not explained.

Ownbey further claims the Black Dragon Society arranged the brutal murder her ancestress, the said Mary (Dabney) Winston Massie in 1835.

Col. William Dabney had no daughter named Mary.

Isaac Winston who died in 1761 did leave a wife Mary but she was not the mother of any of his children. Who she was or her age is unknown.

For 150 years genealogists, historians & biographers have searched in vain for the mother of the children of Isaac Winston & thus the grandmother of Patrick Henry & ancestress of Dolly Madison & Angelina Buchanan.
Re: the Mary Dabney-who is given as the wife of Isaac Winston b.1620 England-children: my ancestor Elizabeth Winston, also James, Mary, Sarah and Martha Henry...All I have with her bio is that "there is much disagreement about her (Mary Dabney's) identity/ancestry"...There is also disagreement about the ancestry of our Elizabeth. One source says that "Sarah Dabney marr. William Winston and had Elizabeth." She marr. John (Isaac Bates).
And did Elizabeth have a sister Sarah who marr. Dr.John Woodson?
'Wish I knew more.
For more on these lines check out my website: pixleyblair.tribalpages.com and type the name into the upper right 'Find' box.

Will of Isaac Winston 1843 Franklin Co NC

This will as recorded in Will Book N in Franklin Co., – corrects all spelling and phrases and enters Benjamin as “my brother Benjamin” and that is so not right! - The original will is clear that it is my sone Benjamin. The original will was written without paragraphs. Since Isaac Winston senior signed with an “X” it appears Isaac Winston, Junior actually wrote this will. I am not absolutely sure this is a perfect transcripted copy – it was very tedious to figure out the spelling with some guessing on my part. If anyone wants copies (jpegs) of this will just send me an email. anastarr46 at gmail.com

The Original Will of Isaac Winston, Senior – Franklin County, North Carolina

In the name of god Amen.
David & Candice (Jeter) Winston of Weakley Co Tenn

Weakley Co., Tennessee

NOTE: David Winston married Candice Jeter in Granville Co., NC - 28 Oct 1824. Richard Allen bondsman, Wm H. Owen witness. About 1830 they moved to Weakley Co., Tenn.

Will of DAVID WINSTON 1848

In the name of God Amen I, David Winston of the county of Weakley and state of Tennessee being feeble in health but perfect in mind and memory and knowing it is appointed for all mankind to die, blessed be God, I make and ordain this my last will and testament, in manner and form as hereinafter named: First, I bequeath my soul to Almighty God and my body to the grave to be buried in a plain and decent manner.

Secondly, All the property I now own, viz, my Negroes and all my lands, together with all my stock of horses, cattle, hogs, sheep, household and kitchen furniture, crops of all kinds, with all the utensils belonging to my farm, I hereby lend to my wife Candice Winston, during her natural life or widowhood. In case my said wife Candice shall never marry after my death, I wish her to enjoy the above named property for the use and benefit of raising my children, and educating them as they may grow up, as I do not wish them scattered about without actual necessity. In case my wife should never marry, it is my wish she keep all my property together and as my children become of age or marry, let them have as much as can with convenience to the family be spared, and let them take property at valuation to be valued by some respectable and impartial men who will do them all justice. At the death of my said widow, if she never marries, my will is that all the property then in her possession, be equally divided between all the children I may have living, or if any of my children shall be dead and have left any lawful heirs from their bodies, my will is that their heirs be entitled to their proportionable part. My will and desire is that if my said wife Candice, should ever marry after my death, that all my property be equally divided as the law directs under administrators, allowing her a child’s part in fee simple, the perishable property all be sold and the property divided according to law. I will that if I have not enough of debts due me to settle all the claims which may come against me at my death, that my Executor sell enough of such property as can be best spared, as to satisfy all the debts that may come against me forthwith.

I wish all my debts paid if possible without any lawsuits. If my wife should think it advisable to move from this county to some other where she may think the climate more healthy, and for the benefit of the family, I hereby authorize her with full power and authority to sell all or any part of my lands, as she may think most advisable for the interest and benefit of her family, having all confidence to believe that my said wife Candice Winston will do equal justice to all her children, and take good care of my property as left in her possession.

I hereby appoint, constitute and ordain my beloved wife, Candice, the sole Executrix of this my last will and testament, to have full power to carry into effect the aforesaid will, just as it now stands and to be exempt from all penalties as is common under the laws of Tennessee I hereby release my said Executrix from giving any security to carry this will into effect.

Signed, sealed and delivered.
(signed) David Winston
Recorded this 4th day of September 1848.
Tom H. Etheridge, Clerk

Will of Candace Winston 1857
I, Candace Winston of the county of Weakley and state of Tennessee, make and ordain this my last will and testament, hereby revoking all other wills by me heretofore made.

I will to R. E. Jeter for the purpose of educating my three youngest children, to wit, David S. Winston, Elizabeth A. Winston, and John Winston, the sum of two hundred dollars each, and I direct that the said R. E. Jeter shall apply same sums of money strictly to the education of said children, and the education and control of the children be placed under his control until said sums of money be exhausted.

My reason for making the above bequest is that my husband David Winston, late of Weakley County, Tennessee, deceased, loaned to me by will for life all of his estate, both personal and real estate, with terms that I should raise and educate his and my children, and whereas I have raised and educated our elder children, but have been unable to complete the education of our three youngest children, owing to their infancy, and anticipate that I should not live to educate them, do make the above bequest. Secondly, I will that any remainder of my property be equally divided between all of our children. In testimony whereof, I hereunto set my hand and seal this July 15th 1856.

(signed) Candace Winston

Test: M. Lynn, B. B. Williams
Recorded this 1st Monday in November 1857.

The Will of Robert Jeter of Weakley Co., Tenn. Dated 14 Jul 1838 is quite long, mentions wife Susanna; various sons, numerous grandchildren; land owned in Weakley Co., Tenn and in Granville Co., NC. Appointed son-in-law, David Winston one of his eecutors.

Statement of Heirs of Robert Jeter, deceased who had left slaves to his four daughters: I, Caleb Brasfield, in right of my wife Katharine Brasfield & I, David Winston in right of my wife Candace Winston & I Jefferson Rogers in right of my wife Mary Rogers, & I, Jonathan T. Rogers in right of my wife Francis Rogers, all being the lawful heirs of Robert Jeter, deceased, to inherit and possess the slaves belonging to the estate, have agreed that we believe it will not be possible for us to divide the slaves as named without the assistance of men appointed for that purpose. Given under our hand this 6th day of August 1838

(Signed) C. Brasfield, David Winston, Jefferson Rogers, Jonathan Rogers
