Frederick George Winstone

I'm trying to research the Winstone branch of my family tree but I am stuck at my great grandfather Frederick George Winstone. He married Nellie Ashton in Finsbury, London in 1932, aged 21 and his father is listed as George Frederick Winstone. The only Frederick George Winstone I have been able to find was born in Holborn 1911 but on the birth certificate the father is George Henry Winstone not George Frederick Winstone. The 1911 census I found a Frederick George Winstone and father is just listed as George Winstone, I have included the file for this census. If anyone is able to help me crack this I would be truly grateful I've been stuck on this one for a good while now.

Hi,

My 2nd Great Grandmother was Mary Winstone b. abt 1845. She lived in Cricklade street,Cirencester. Mary Married Thomas Brown in 1871 and later William Weeks/Wicks in 1877. Her father was possibly John Winstone and Charlotte? I cannot confirm yet but prior to Cirencester this family lived in Quenington.

Amanda

Re: george eric frost winstone
Hello. Actually George Eric Frost Winstone was not born in Nottingham - although he did live there for much of his life, so it's an understandable assumption to make. He was born in Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorgan, Wales, on 1 September 1911. He was known by his second name, Eric, throughout his life and he had one brother (Thomas Albert Winstone) who only died in 2002, aged 94. Unfortunately, Eric suffered with quite severe bronchitis for most of his life after two bouts of double pneumonia (one when a child; the second when he was in the RAF during WW2) and this affected him in his older years. As you rightly said, he was a teacher (actually a Maths Teacher) who taught at Bramcote Hills school until his retirement in the early 1970s. He died aged 74 on 12 June 1985 in the Queens Medical Centre in Nottingham.

Olive, full name Olive May Hawley (always known as Mary when she was a child) was actually born on 2 December 1916 -but her birth wasn't registered until January 1917. She lived all her life in the Nottingham/Derby area. She worked for Boots the Chemist for many years at their Head Office in Beeston and died on 23 April 1993 in Derby Royal Infirmary, from acute Kidney failure.

Olive and Eric were married on 31 July 1937 in St Francis of Assisi RC Church in Long Eaton. They had one daughter, Patricia May Winstone, who was born on 28 August 1940. Pat married Oliver Michael Allen on 23 September 1961 and they had one son, Mark Andrew Allen, born on 25 August 1971.

I am Mark Allen, Pat and Oliver are my parents, and Olive Hawley & Eric Winstone were my grandparents.

I am aware that Olive's oldest sister (Mary Ellen) was your direct relation. Olive also had two further siblings, Sally (full name Sarah Hannah) and Les (Leslie). Sally was born on 10 May 1908, married Ernest Hurt, but they had no children. Ernest died in 1981; Sally died in 2000 of heart failure after a number of years in an old people's home in Grantham. Les Hawley married Pauline and had two daughters, Gillian and Margaret. Both are married (to John and Paul, respectively) and Gillian has two children (Lisa & Christopher - Lisa has a baby daughter). Margaret has four sons (Daniel, Andrew, Sean and Paul).

So Olive was my grandmother, Sally, Les and Nell were my great aunts/uncle.

I have much more to tell you - since we're related, do get in touch...

Re: UK Winstones

Hi John,

Many of the Winstones come from the Gloucestershire area, most specifically from Cirencester, where there is a village called Winstone.

My ancester Thomas Winstone, born in Cirencester in 1844, moved to Wolverhampton, then in Staffordshire (now in the West Midlands), in the late 1860's, marrying Jane Davies in 1866 and then Mary Ann Shutt in 1886 after Jane's death.

With Jane he had three sons, Thomas (b.1866), Henry James (b.1869) and George (b.1877). Henry, my great-grandfather married Rosannah ("Roseanna") White in 1894 and they remained in Wolverhampton all their lives, having five (surviving) children: Violet (1900), Reginald (1902), Daisy (1904), Henry (1910) and Rose (1911). Daisy, my grandmother, married into the Wellings family (half Welsh) and died in 1984. Rose only died a couple of years ago.

I've only just started digging back, but it looks like we may also be related to Ray Winstone, the actor, whose family are also from Cirencester.

Best regards...Helen

Can you tell me a little more information about George EF Winstone? What country did he live in? Do you know approximately how old he was when Patricia was born? How old is your grandmother, and was Olive her older or younger sister?

I have a few George Winstone's that might fit the bill, but I don't know their wives, or children (nor middle names).

Thanks and Good Luck
Reed Winstone

Hi Reed,
I think it was about 1941, that is the date on his NZ Army records. I have check a few electroal roles and census for NZ about that time but haven't come up with anything yet, more electroal role than census result though.
My dad and some of his brothers seem to have thought he was in The British Merchant Marines and he was in a ship wreck and told to find his own way home, on my dad's birth cert Gdad was listed as a fireman, he was apparently a tailor by trade as well. And that is where I came face to face with the brick wall.

Lex

Hi Reed,
thanks for that, I have saved a copy. Would be interesting to find out who the living relatives are. Unfortunity my Grandfather Jack/John passed away in 1967 here in New Zealand, so I cannot ask, also most of family (winstone) are not in connact, trying to achieve those contacts at moment. My task is also made difficult as it looks like my grandfather may have changed his D.O.B . Have also done lookups on Census in England and his name doesn't seem to appear anywhere.
Again thanks, any other leads you could provide would be great too.

Cheers Lex

I have a Violet Matilda James 02 January 1879 married to William Percy Winstone 04 October 1880 (not Brook/e). They have 4 children. One is Kathleen Violet Winstone b 1915; the other 3 are listed as "living". William Percy's father is George Winstone (b 01 February 1848 in Wraxall, Somerset, England) but died in New Zealand.

Its a long shot, but at least the family is about the right age.

Additional information.
In the 1880 Federal census, William Winstone and wife Sarah, lived in Nodaway twp, Adams county, Iowa. They had the following children:
Eleanor, 17
Emily, 15
Rosa, 13
William, 10
Lucy, 6
Effie, 2

All children and parents born in England except Lucy and Effie who were born in Iowa.

The info in the previous post is not documented. The info in this post was taken from the 1880 Federal Census Image.

If any of this is of interest, there is a 95 year old resource person that would be invaluable to the right persons.
