They had a son Edward Charles Winterton (born May 11, 1917 in Canada), but then Edna went to the USA where she married a Paul Jacob Grothman of Wisconsin.
Hello Alan Winterton ...

You might find the following website useful. Go to www.winterton.us/family. Click on "No Regrets." It is the autobiography of Allen M Winterton. Virtually the entire first chapter deals with William Hubbard Winterton and his sons, John and William. William (the son of William Hubbard) is Allen M Winterton's grandfather. The book, "No Regrets" is also available at the BYU Library, the Orem City Main Library, the Library of Congress (Washington, DC), and perhaps a few genealogical libraries as well. You are welcome to download and reproduce the entire book, or excerpts from the book as long as they are not resold for profit. Adobe Acrobat is required.

Wayne Winterton

My gggfather is John Winterton (b. 1802) from Barrow. He married Martha (possibly Pickering) and had children of Ann (1834), Samuel (1836), Harriet (1838), Lois (1840), Ada (1843), and John (1845). I am from Harriet's line. I cannot find any baptisms recorded. On various censuses they listed Desford, Charley Forest, Huncote and Thurlstone as birthplaces. I have a feeling that John moved around a lot as a tennant farmer.

Ann married William Leedham. Harriet married James Pickering. Lois married Ralph Chadwick.

Any information would be welcome.

Don

Hi

My Winterton's are from Barrow on Soar in Leciestershire. If you have any other addresses in Stamford, as I said I live there, I can have a look around at the addresses and see if I can get you some photo's of the houses or churches where they were married, etc... Zebra Cottages is definatly still there, it is a row of about 7 small houses on what would have been in those days on the outskirts of the town, now it is a bit more built up. I have never heard of Church Cottages but the street could have been renamed, the grocery shop would that have been under the Wilkinson name?
Anyway let me know if you would like pictures. If you happen to find a connection to the Leicestershire Winterton's please let me know.
Thanks
Ellyn

Hi Ellyn

Thank you very much for your reply and for the information. We are very grateful for the trouble you went to. Is your interest in the Wilkinsons or the Wintertons? We can provide quite a bit of information about the Wilkinsons, Mussons and Hatfields should you be interested.

Are the Church Cottages still in Stamford? The Zebra Cottages are still there or are they the same thing? We are trying to find some of the "missing" Wilkinsons one of whom we believe ran a grocery store in Stamford during WWII. We have managed to locate William Henry Wilkinson's and Cecil Wilkinson's WWI army records but they disappear after 1917. Any ideas?

Thanks again for the help.

Don

Ethel Laurel Winterton b.1892? NJ?

Since my original message I uncovered some more info. I found a Laura Lutter, age 28, living in Newark, NJ on the 1920 census. I believe she is actually Ethel Laurel Winterton by birth. Her birthplace was listed as NJ (which could easily be an error), but one of her children (my grandfather, now deceased) was born in Philadelphia in 1915. (The other child was born in NJ in 1918.) I believe (but have no documentation yet) that she is related to William Winterton, who did live in Philadelphia at some point. I have requested his original social security number application, which will reveal his birthplace, address, and parents' names. I had a photo album that looked like it was made around 1900. Some pictures have "Philadelphia" written on the back, and used either Philadelphia or Newark studios. Living family members know little about the Winterton family, and are not even sure if Laurel's name was actually Ethel Laurel. Newark city directories list "E. Laurel" for a few years. Some family members say that someone named Winterton married into the Rockefeller family of NY. (I have no such documentation.) I have no knowledge of a move to Canada or any other stories. (But this doesn't mean that we aren't talking about the same Winterton family.)

I don't recognize any of the names that you mentioned in your message. I have 6 or 7 generations of Wintertons in my known family tree, but all are in the United States. I do know which Winterton in my line immigrated to the U.S., but nothing of his family...and the dates do not correspond with the Wintertons you mentioned.

My earliest known Winterton (the one who immigrated to the U.S.) was William Winterton, born 1767 in England, married to Mary Bartlett of England (unknown date), died 15 Feb 1814 in Newburgh, NY. Family records show that he immigrated in 1794 or 1796. We beleive he had 10 children, although only 7 of their names are known.

Sorry that my data does not appear to be a help to your research.

Hi Jamie,
My grandmother was a Winterton, she was born in Hammersmith, Middlesex, England, in 1868. Her father was Lester Winterton, about whom I can find absolutely nothing. Her grandfather was Charles J Winterton, a Master Mariner, born in Rochester, Kent, in 1813, married about 1830, +or-5, to Jane (Ridge?), they had at least 4 children, all born in Rochester, Kent, Jane, born Oct 1839; Sarah, born Nov 1842, married about 1875 to George Gattrell, a butcher; Elizabeth, born Nov 1844; Charles, born Mar 1848, a Commercial traveller, living at Hougham, Kent, in 1881, married to Mary (?) about 1873, had a son Charles, born 1874 at Chatham, Kent.
If any of this is connected with your family, I would be most interested to see your family tree.

My great-great grandfather was Charles J Winterton, born 1813 at Rochester, Kent, England, married about 1830, +or-5, to Jane (Ridge?). He had a daughter Elizabeth, born 1844 in Rochester, Kent. I'm looking for my great grandfather, Lester Winterton, born in Rochester, Kent, in possibly 1835, +or-2, or 1846.
