Does anyone know anything about Alice Louisa Charlesworth Winton, born in the Jun Quarter of 1853 in the Tonbridge/Tunbridge RD in Kent. She married William Gregory Smith of Addlestone at St Stephens, Lambeth on 6th October 1877. She appears on the 1881 Census lodging with her one year old son in Kent but then the trail seems to go cold. I'm wondering what happened to her after that.

Hi Emma, From the information I have read in a few places. Hans Peter Shaver was actually beheaded and his body was found in the pasture. His head was never found. It's not believed Native Americans did this as they did not "behead" people. More than likely it was done by someone wanting his trapping and trade business and wanting his farm land. Also Hans Shaver was friendly with the Native Americans in the area. The sum of "50 lbs" was offered for the return of his head. The money was never collected.
An attempt was made to take the land from Rhoda Shaver but Samuel Anderson entered a caveat on the Shaver farm on behalf of Rhoda's sons Peter and John. The farm was saved and later Rhoda married Samuel Anderson. They had three children of their own.

Have been looking for Virginia A. 'Virgie" WINTON born about 1867 in Greene County, Missouri who was the youngest daughter of George Mitchell WINTON and Amanda Jane Faulkner. She was the half-ssiter to my great-grandfather. After her birth and up until the 1880 Polk County, MO Census I have her. It is believed that she married a William Crosby, but only the good Lord knows where she went after that. I've been unable to locate her in any records anywhere to include Census and Marriage records nor have I been able to find anything about William Crosby. Not even a tidbit of speculation and Ancestry is pretty good about finding people even if you have to look a bit. If anyone has any tidbit of info please let me know. She is one of my brickwalls.

John Elmer "Jack" Winton

I am trying to find anyone out there who knows information about John Elmer Winton. The only info I have is a marriage between him and Elizabeth Stone on 11 Jul 1872 in Conway County, Arkansas. They had a son, Benjamin Franklin Winton, born 25 July 1873 in Arkansas. Ben married Serena Elizabeth (Daniel) Burns on 3 Jan 1915 in White County, Arkansas. John went by the name of "Jack". By 1876, Jack and Elizabeth had either split or he died because she married Ben Gunter in Faulkner, Arkansas in August of that year. If anyone out there can possibly tell me a birth date, place of birth and death date and place for Jack Winton, I'd be most appreciative! Thanks so much in advance

Re: Was John Winton, husband of Arabella Cunningham, a Revolutionary War Veteran?

Hi Jenky,

I found the following on a website (cited at the end) which gives a good details about John Winton and his house. It's probably what you are looking for but if you need something more, let me know.

Peggy
____________________________________________________________

Before 1785, one of the earliest settlers in the Martel area was John Winton and wife, Arabella Cunningham Winton. The Wintons left Virginia about 1784 and moved first to Jefferson County. John Winton, born November 8, 1761, left the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia soon after he married Arabella Cunningham on May 15, 1784. Arabella (named for her mother, Arabella Goode Cunningham) was born in Ireland on May 19, 1763.

Young Arabella definitely was her own person; for when her mother, father, brothers, and sisters laughed at her for joining the Methodist Church, she became stronger in her convictions. When John Winton first moved to Jefferson County, he did not take part in the church; but when he heard Bishop Francis Asbury preach, they became friends. For lack of a minister, he began as a layman to preach and was ordained by Bishop Asbury as a deacon and minister in 1800. John and Arabella Winton first built an arbor and campground at Muddy Creek and hundreds came to the outdoor services and revivals.

Later the Wintons built a log church, but it was removed by soldiers under orders of General Ambrose Burnside during the Civil War.

The center of John Winton's holdings, or the home place, was located at Muddy Creek Station, a stage coach stop, on the waters of Muddy Creek, now Martel Community, Lenoir City, Tennessee. Stories say that at the time this beautiful clear stream was named, beavers were busy building a dam and the water was muddy, hence the name "Muddy Creek," which was never changed."

On this property, Rev. Winton along with his wife Arabella, a devout Methodist, established a "Meeting House" with a campground to hold "revival" meetings. Rev. Winton deeded it all to the Muddy Creek Methodist Episcopal Church in 1843, reserving only a family burial plot where he and Arabella are buried.

Rev. John Winton and his wife built two impressive houses in the Muddy Creek area during their lives. The first was a two story framed house with a winding stairway built in replica of the one in the Betsy Ross house in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

The spring has never run dry and was the source of water for neighbors and stagecoach travelers during droughts. Andrew Jackson is said to have stopped there. The second home was built in the Muddy Creek area and is described in detail by Linda Carson (Mrs. Samuel G.) Johnson, in the book, Fuqua - A Fight for Freedom.

"By 1812, John Winton had so prospered that he determined to build a brick mansion near the frame house in which he and Arabella had lived for seventeen years. Whether by chance or by design,
it is quite interesting that his saintly couple chose the form of a cross for their new home. The front porch formed the top of the cross; the dining room, kitchen and nursery wing the lower part of the cross; while the bedrooms and parlor formed the cross arms and the front hall the transept."

She further says, "Planned along Classic Greek lines, Winton House was to be one of the first Greek Revival houses built in the area, an early example of what has become known as the "Southern Greek Revival House or Southplace."

The construction began on this magnificent home in 1812, but due to the British war, it was not completed until 1815.

Glass was quite expensive and had to be hauled long distances. It had been used sparingly in the little frame house; by 1812, John Winton could well afford this luxury, and he planned his new house with many unusually large windows to catch the sunlight as the day progressed. Many of the original window frames are in the house today, the glass softly tinted by the rays of the sun for so many years, some are almost opalescent, reminding one of the lavender windows of the old houses on Beacon Street in Boston. It is quite easy to distinguish the old glass because of the imperfections, bubbles and lines in the panes.

The bricks were burned by slaves on the place. All were hand made, and for a house of this size, with walls eighteen inches thick, the kilning of the brick alone was a great undertaking.

The woodwork and paneled doors, beautifully proportioned, show the faint marks of the hand plane. Around the doors and windows, the woodwork is beautifully fluted with square corners similar to the ones in the White House in Washington, which was restored in this same period after being burned by the British.

The mantles are exquisite examples of the transition period between Adam styling and Greek Revival, with the classic simplicity and beautiful proportions of the Greek, and the varied detail of graduation in width and depth and the graceful lines of the Adam period. The stairway, gracing the broad front hall where guests were welcomed, was most unusual for its day, and was possibly the first free-hanging circular stairway built in Tennessee.

The basic plan of the original house remains today with four large twenty foot square rooms on either side of a broad central hall in front, two upstairs and two down. The lower west room was the master bedroom adjoined by a nursery. The back wing contained a nursery, a large dining room and a kitchen complete with a very large fireplace and crane used for cooking the family meals. There were originally no connecting doors between these rooms since it was unthinkable to have cooking odors escape, even to the dining room. The only access to these rooms was from the wide porch extending around the wing. There was a dumb waiter between the dining room and kitchen for the convenience of the servants.

Originally there were two large front bedrooms and three half-story children's rooms in the back wing. Only a 63 foot porch on the west side of the house remains of the original porch around the wing.

Though many changes have taken a place through the years to accommodate the needs of families who have occupied the old house and to add modern conveniences, its basic charm and the beauty of its proportions and classic lines still remain, mellowed by years of living. Somehow those who have contributed to its existence and preservation have left a sense of peace and well-being that remains to bless those who continue to live there. "After Colonel Winton's death, the house was occupied by a relative, Colonel Easley, and still later by the Mann and Armstrong Families." (Quote from Beloved
Landmarks of Loudon County, Tennessee, #2 "The Winton House, Cradle of Methodism in Loudon County," published December 1962 by the Hiwassee Chapter DAR).

In 1942, "Winton House" was purchased by Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Carson. At this historic home, August 4, 1959, the Carson's lovely and talented daughter, Linda, was married to Samuel Gideon Johnson, the
great-grandson of James Johnson. James was brother to Samuel, who married Nancy Winton at "Winton House' March 3, 1827.

In November 1960 "Sam and Linda Johnson bought "Winton House' and 101acres, which were part of the John Winton home place farm on Muddy Creek, from the Carsons. Immediately extensive repairs and improvements to the house and grounds were started.

These beautiful homes are now owned by Rev. William F. (Bill) and Dartha Wilkinson. The Wilkinson's purchased both homes in March 2001. They have chosen the name "The Magnolia Manor' for the property because of the large magnolias that adorn the land. Their dream is to give these homes back to the people of this area and they are making their homes available for your special occasions!

From website: http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/s/h/e/Sheron-R-Sh...
Thanks for your reply. How wonderful that you own John Winton's home! Last we heard it was used for weddings and for some overnight accomodations. I have alot of info on John so I will sift through my info. My husband descends from his daughter, Elizabeth Winton Montgomery. We visited the cemetery where he is buried -- Martel Methodist, years ago but at the time, did not see his home. I thought there had been a picture posted online awhile ago. I will check my files and get back to you.
Peggy

I am the current owner of the John Winton Home in Lenoir City, Tennessee. Built in 1815. We also own his original homeplace built 1795. We are of no relation to the Winton family, but I would love any information that we can gather about his family. I especially would love any pictures of the home or property. We have owned the home for 2 1/2 years. It is a great family home

Hi I'm looking for any knowledge of an Elspet or Elspeth Winton who had a son David Winton law around 1838 in Banffshire . Can find no record of marriage of parents or his birth. I think his grandparents (from 1841 census) are James and Jane Winton
Any help appreciated!

Thank you

Rhoda Winton Shaver

She was married to Peter Shaver. They lived in Huntingdon Co, PA during the 1750's. They had at least two sons, John and Peter, Jr. About 1754 or 1755 Peter Sr. was "scalped" by an Indian, or so the legend goes. Rhoda then married Samuel Anderson. Many stories exist about this family but my interest is Peter Jr. As an adult he was a soldier, farmer, and father. He married a Catherine Piper and they had a son in 1804. His name was David Shaver. (For sure, he was my great grandfather). He became a Methodist minister, farmer, husband and father. He moved to Perry county, married Nancy Linn, and later became a local judge and PA state legislator. Any information about this family is appreciated, but specifically the early Shavers. Peter Jr may be the brother of Major John Shaver from Mt. Union but I have not made that connection.

jr mau be the brother of Major John ShaverIt appears they are not the
The only Robert Winton I have in my tree is the one born in 1790. I am a descendant of his brother James B1770 and he also had a brother Alexander B1778. Their father was also Alexander C1745

I have only traced James's descendants, my bloodline so far.

I unfortunately therefore do not presently have the information to determine if your Robert B1857 is linked to this family.

He may be a descendant of Robert or Alexander etc ?

Best Regards

Ron

I've recently begun to search my WINTON surname. My Great Grandfather is Grover Cleveland WINTON, the son of Wyatt Lane WITNON. Does anyone have any info on this particular line that they could share with me, or direct me to? If so, please email me at: galrocker@sbcglobal.net or galrocker@aol.com.

Thank you!

T.

My gr. grandfather was Silas Joseph Winton, who was born in Stone, Kent in 1849. I know that he sailed from Liverpool to the U.S.A.in 1891 and I would be very interested in finding out any information about him and would be most grateful if you could provide details of the record mentioned in your message board posting.
I believe I have a photograph of him taken in Florida, left to my family by his daughter, Helen Winton.
Do you have any connection with the Winton family yourself?
regards
Don McCormick
