Is there a WINWOOD French connection?

Hello - its me again
I have been talking to one of my relatives and she was told as a child that the Winwoods in Durham originally came from France, that they had royal connections, and that they were fleeing some conflict. This has rung a bell with something I saw on a message forum somewhere. Has anyone else heard such rumours, and if so, has anyone any evidence?
cheers
janet

Winwoods in Worstershire & Iowa

I am trying to trace my great-grandparents/grandparents and this is what I have found so far.

My great-grandfathers name was William Winwood his wifes name was Mary Ann Turner Winwood. I know they had children named Abe, Job Henry & Mary Ann,(my grand-mother). They also appear to have had another daughter called Emma. The family seems to have originated in Worcestershire and moved to the Tipton, Staffordshire area sometime in the mid 19th century. I have found an entry in the 1881 England census which shows them in Toll End Tipton. However in 1888 Wiliam and Mary went to Iowa in the US and took at least Abe & Job Henry with them. I know that my great-grandmother died in Salt Lake City in November 1920 whilst living with her son Job Henry and his family. I do not know when & where my great-grandfather died but I assume it was in Iowa somewhere. My grand-mother marired a John Levi Hill, again I do not know when or where but she died in Tipton, England in 1916 with her husband dying in Tipton in 1926. My fathers name was Job Henry Hill and most of his brothers & sisters also went to the US during the early 20th century.

I would like to fill in some gaps such as where my great-grandparents lived in Iowa, and how many of their children went with them.

Can anyone help?

Thanks

Paul Winwood Hill

Hi, I couldn't find a direct contact for you (Janet winwood Turner) so I thought I'd take a chance. It's a really long shot but I'm trying to track down a Margaret 'pepper' winwood nee Perry who married a canadian soldier called Guy Winwood. I know they had a son called Michael and a daughter called Janet...this sounds so odd but I wondered if you knew anything about them??? She was my grandmother's best friend back in Hove and they lost contact. Any help much appreciated. Many thanks, Emily Ticehurst.

Hi, My grandmother was Gertrude (Hill) Morrison from Tipton, England. Her mother was Mary Ann Winwood and her maternal grandfather was William Winwood married to Mary Ann Turner. Gertrude's father was John Levi Hill. All of the family was in the Tipton/Dudley area. I have recently begun researching my geneology. How are you related to William Winwood? Who is your Hill relative? My grandmother ultimately spent her life in Cambridge, Massachusetts USA after emigrating from England in the early 1900's. She lived until 1980. Her Hill siblings included Job, Joseph, Mary, Elizabeth, Thomas, George, Alice, Charlotte. Are you related to any of these?

William Winwood born in 1821 in Dudley Port, Worcestershire

I am looking for information on my great-grandfather William Winwood. He was born in 1821 in Dudley Port, Worcestershire, according to the 1871 UK census. Sometime between 1871 and 1881 he seems to have gone to the USA, sending for his wife, Mary Ann, (maiden name Turner), and two of his children, Abraham & Job Henry, and old newspaper cutting I have for Abraham mentions Iowa. His other children were adults by this time but may have also emmigrated. His eldest daughter Emma was married in 1881, (married name was Leach or Loach), but may have emmigrated in this year with her family, possibly to Illinois.

The next reference I can find is in the 1900 US census for Silver Bow Montana. In this census Mary Ann appears with Job Henry, but is marked as widowed. Abraham Winwood is also mentioned in this census.

Does anyone have any information on the movements of William Winwood from 1871 onwards, and when and where he died?

Thanks

Paul Winwood Hill

looking for Winwoods of England

I am looking for some information on Richard Louis Winwood, from either Birmingham or Manchester. I know he married Winnifred Winkett (she was from Wales I believe), and had 3 girls (born 1890, 1893, and 1894) and emigrated to Manitoba Canada in 1906.

I am hoping to find information on his parents. My great grandmother (the youngest child of Richard and Winnifred) died 16 years ago, and she was our last link to that line, and my mother had never thought to pick her brain about her parents parents.

Any help you can give to point me in the right direction would be forever appreciated.

Thank you in advance

I'm researching the Winwood/Windwood family of Hitchin and would like to contact anyone who is related to the family of Thomas Windwood or Charles Windwood who are in the 1841 UK census - both listed as tailors. Thomas has 5 children, Thomas, George, Charles, Elizabeth, and Joshua. Charles has one son, George.

My grandmother was Maude Winwood. She was the daughter of George Winwood who came from England in 1868. Maude was born in Ohio in 1875. Her brother George was born in Ohio in 1874. The family moved to Pittsburgh PA as they are listed in the 1880 census there.
Does this fit anywhere in your Winwood line?

I have a copy of his birth certificate, or William Winwood and Hannah Underhill's marriage if you are interested, please let me know.

Hi Janet! Good to see you still rooting around! I did find an interesting bit from the 1901 census in Durham. What I learned was that all of the Winwoods in Durham in 1901 were descendants of Robert Winwood (b. 1778) and Ann Rolfe - one way or the other. I am undertaking to write a book about Horatio and Ann and to list all of their descendents. I've got a good stab at it now, but need to do some for research to get the additions from the 1940s on. Hope you are well and engaged in fun stuff. Stay in touch, eh? Richard I. Winwood riw@aros.net

Sarah Winwood, daughter of George Winwood, according to her death certificate born in Worcestershire in 1804, married William HAINES in either Worcesterhire or Monmouthshire in the 1820s and had about 10 children. All except 3 died in an epidemic of ? in Wales - when?. Sarah and the 3 surviving children emigrated to Australia in the late 1850s. Would like to find Sarah's birthplace in Worcestershire (1 person has suggested Rock because of mining in common with Monmouthshire). Any suggestions?

I have never met any of my
relatives except Aunt Betty and Wally. Years ago, when I was a baby, Uncle Richard and Stevie came
to stay with us in Texas. I was so young, I don't even remember.

My Uncle Ken, I never met and grandparents were deceased before I was born. It is so good to finally be
able to communicate with someone from my dad's (ALBERT) side of the family. This has been a long
time deal with me to contact or try to find the rest of the Winwood's.

You can e-mail me at any time and I can let you know about my dad's side of the family in Texas.

Thanks ever so much for your response.........Janet

I don't have your e.mail although your message says it is at the top of the page, I can't see it. I am a descendent of Frances Ann Winwood, the sister of Horatio Winwood who I've seen in your messages. Our branch is still in England, though not Winwoods of course as I am from the female line. I have some info relating to the US line, and know of a line in Canada, but don't have details. I understand that Richard Winwood, gg grandson of Horatio, from Salt Lake City is compiling a book about Horatio.
I have some info re the Suffolk ancestors, which you probably have. It would be nice to hear from you, maybe we can fill in each others trees a little?
cheers
janet

Hi
I posted an answer to Betty's message but it isn't appearing on this list. I am a descendent of Horatio Winwood who left Durham in 1902, emigrated to US. Have many of the Suffolk Winwoods etc and some info for Horatios sister, Frances Ann who was my great grandmother, as well as a fair few Winwoods around Pennsylvania. Our side of the family are all still in England. I tried to contact yevette via her e.mail but message returned, something about unsolicited mail, sorry. I was also unsuccessful in trying to enter her myFamily page. Would appreciate a reply from anyone with info on this family, and I may be able to help a little in return.

Hi Betty. I hope you are still reading this site!! I'm not sure where in the family Horatio Moody Winwood fits in, but he is certainly a descendent of my ancestors. My great grandmother's brother was Horatio Winwood, born in Durham, England in 1864. He married Ann Moody in Durham, and had a son, William Moody Winwood (along with several other children). The family moved to Pennsylvania when William was 5 months old, in 1902. The names Moody Winwood continued to be used through the next generation and members of the family moved around Pennsylvania. Other siblings of Horatio emigrated from Durham around the same time, to Canada. I have been in contact with one of William Moody winwoods descendents who now lives in Salt Lake City, and along with Enid Harrison of Durham, England, he has provided me with a tree going back to the mid 1700s in Shropshire, England. You can e.mail me at janetdyke@hotmail.com for more info. It's very interesting, including Horatio's father having married two sisters!! Hope this helps you in your search
janet
