Obit of Simon P. Wise 1909

From the Chatsworth Plaindealer
Chatsworth,Livingston,Illinois

SIMON P. WISE
JULY 30, 1909

S.P. Wise was found dead in his yard at him home at the west side of town by members of his family on Tuesday (July 26) afternoon, having died of heart failure while about his stable.
Funeral services were held at the M.E. church on Thursday morning and the remains interred in the Chatsworth cemetery.
Simon P. Wise, son of Peter and Edith N. Wise, was born at Brownsville, Licking county, Ohio, February 15, 1838, and died at his home, Chatsworth, Ill., aged 71 years , 5 months and 12 days. In 1860 he was married to Miss Sarah Kieth and four years later moved to Marshall, Clark county, ILl. Of this union five children were left to mourn, viz: William K., Luverne, Minn.; Leander T., Watertown, S. Dak.; Mrs. Laura Van Valson, Melvin, Ill.; Milton S., Arrowsmith, Ill., and Melvin J., Los Angeles, Cal. He was left companionless February 20, 1872, and in 1873 he was married to Miss Martha Jane Templin, of Blanchester, Ohio. Of this union three children are living --Effie and Frank, who have been at home, and Albert T., of Anchor.
Mr. Wise moved to Belleflower, Ill. in 1872, where they made their home for twenty years, coming to Roberts in 1892 and to Chatsworth seven years later. Mr. Wise has four brothers and three sisters, all living save one. At the early age of thirteen years he united with the Methodist Episcopal church. For some time he serveed as Sunday school superintendent. He was an ardent lover of the Sunday school and was seldom found absent from his class. Likewise he was loyal to the church services and the pastor always found a warm welcome at his home, he often asking why the pastor did not come more often. His christian zeal and loyalty are attested in the fact that all the children, save two, are Christians and members of the Methodist church.

I am a Hollis descendent. My paternal great-great-greatgrandmother was Harriet Hollis who was enslaved by D.U. Hollis of the Moscow area of Sulligent in Lamar County, AL. Her daughter Jane Hollis married Doug Wells and they are the parents of Girlie Wells who married King Wise.
How are the Wises and the Hollis clan connected. I am keeping in mind that there were at least 3 Hollis slaveholders who had an average of 100 slaves each. Lots of bblack folk in Lamar County are named Hollis. Can you provide me with any other information. I know King's sister moved to Detroit and has offspring still there.
Hope to hear from you soon,
Joyce

The African American Hollis family are descendants from Laura Wise of Monroe, MS. She was born in 1873. Her mother was Mariah, parents unknown. Laura's father unknown. Mariah was more than likely a slave.

That's right. I guess some of my info. about Rufus was probably wrong. I do know that my grandfather's youngest brother, called Peewee came to live with my grandfather and mother's family when my great-grandmother died. Maybe Rufus too.

Searching for information about a Samuel Wise who married Mattie Lee Price in Madison FL in 1885. He was a traveling salesman working for a Savannah GA house. They divorced before Aug 1888. Her second husband was William W. White married in Texarkana TX in 1888. They likely divorced by 1894. Her third husband was Louis Aronson m. bet. 1894-1899.
Mattie was born in 1869 in Murray County GA. She died in London in 1899 while performing for the Barnum & Bailey, circus leaving two orphans: Charles Joseph White b. 1889 Mt. Pleasant TX and Jeanette Leona White b. 1886 in Indiana? We find these two children in the Charles & Polly Riffle household in the 1900 Lena, Oconto, Wisconsin census.
Can anyone help with identifying this Samuel Wise?

The children with Mary was my Grandfather, Robert, Homer, Avery, Dallas, Cecil, Ed, Andrew, Lucille, Magdeline, & Ada. His children with his 2nd wife was Clifford and a daughter who's name I forget. Your Grandfather was Avery? Then Rufus was your Great Grandfather as well?

He would go back and forth between two wives making babies. My great-grandfather was one of 6 or 7 sons, no daughters. Let me know if anything rings a bell. Sherry Keeling

My W.R. Brigman was born in Charleston County, South Carolina, June 12, 1853. I don't have a 1860 or 1870 Census record for the family. I believe he is the William Brigman listed in the 1980 Census as a hireling in Precinct 4, Delta, TX. since his residence there is confirmed in his obituary.
His death certificate lists his parents as W.R. Brigman b. S. Carolina and his mother as Wise, also b. S. Carolina.
His obituary states, in part:In early manhood, he moved to Mississippi where he resided for about a year and one-half, then moved to Texas. In 1887, he moved from Delta County to the Indian Territory, and on to Wheeler County in 1911. I hope that this information leads to someone in the Wise family helping to identify my Wise from S.C. who married a W.R. Brigman.

Riley Thomas Wise

Looking for the parents of Riley Thomas Wise who was born around the end of the Civil War. The story is that his father and older brother were killed by Indians in Texas and his mother and him then migrated with others back to Southeast Alabama, specifically Coffee and Geneva Counties. Trying desparately to verify this story. No records exist before Riley bought land in Alabama in 1895. He married a Fannie Brazile whose parents were, I believe, Andrew Jackson Brazile and Evie Brazile. His widowed mother was named Matilda who went on to remarry a Joseph "Pops" Weeks. All are buried in the Piney Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. Andrew Jackson Brazile is buried in the Millville Cemetery in Panama City, Florida. There is such a big hole in my family tree with this branch. Would love to get closure.

I think I know the connection. If your grandmother's maiden name was Williams, than I believe your grandfather would have been Joseph and your grandmother would have been Ethel Williams. If this is correct, we are definitely related. Joe and Ethel were my mother's uncle and aunt.

There is a picture of Angela surrounded by lots of kids and adults...some standing on a wall as well as sitting in chairs. It was taken outside in the backyard of her her house in Mt. Washington, Ohio and I am in it as well as my grandmother, Julia and my mother, Rita. This picture would be the Wise family.

If you are interested in more information about the Wise family, I will be happy to help.
Yes I would. The research I have done online brought me to Emmet Sylvester Wise. I found it thru census records which I believe are correct as it does list the sister of my grandfather, the one sister I remember - Angela
I have a family photo with many family members, a lot of children, that I do not remember except for Angela. It appears to be about 3 years old so this picture is about 55 years old. Not sure if it includes my grandmother's family (Williams) or just the Wise family.

I know it has been a long time since your post. Do you have any more information on Thomas Wyman and Abigal Doyen? I show that this couple married and 9 Mar 1747-8 per the following:
"Vital Records of Haverhill Massachusetts To The End Of The Year 1849, Volume II. - Marriages and Deaths, page 95, "Doyne (see also Doyen) Abigail [Dohoins. C. R. 3], and Thomas Wyman, Mar. 9, 1747-8 [Oct. 13, 1848.]"
They had a son Thomas Wyman b. 4 Mar 1747 in Haverhill, Massachusetts and a daughter, Sarah Wyman b. 22 March 1753 in Pembroke, New Hampshire.
Sarah is mentioned in her Aunt's will. I don't think their dates match to be ancestors of your Sarah Wise.

Here is his timeline:
Sept 9 1925 - June 1935-Ebenezer Orphans Home Flat Rock, OH
Sept 1935 - June 1936-Thompson High School Bellvue, OH
Sept 1936 - June 1937-MCClatchy HS Sacramento, CA
June 1937 - August 1939-Sacramento,CA
Aug 1939 - Nov 1945- US Army
November 1948-Sacramento, CA
1948- Married Marie Benson
1948-1953- Reno, Nevada
7/1953-11/1957-Ely, Nevada
11/1957-1961-Winnemucca, NV
1961-March 30,1968 Ely, Nevada
Howard Died March 30, 1968 at the age of 48. With this information I can't see that he was in Oklahoma in 1936. I don't see any connection of he being your grandfather. Hope you continue your search and finding your grandfather.

Alana Wise
