Re: Wolf/Strube Connection

My great-grandfather was Gustav Strube. That would mean that both Minnie and Joseph were my grandmother's cousins. Her name was Elfriede Strube and she had sister named Claire. There father was Gustav. Gustav had an uncle who immigrated to Keedysville, MD. This uncle was his father's twin brother. This uncle married Henriette Meergarten. My grandmother had my mother, Claire-Louse who married a Brunton. I am Susanne Brunton. Gustav Strube was the first conductor of the Baltimore Symphony. You can find more about him by doing a Google search. I do not know if you will get this since your post was about 12 years ago. Here is the family genealogy:
1. Friedrich Strube (*36A, generation 5)
Town musician of Ballenstedt, in the Harz Mountains. Had a twin
brother, whose descendents live in Keedysville, Maryland.
Married Henriette Meergarten (*37).
Children:
(a) son (died young) (18A)
(b) son (died young) (18B)
(c) Gustav Strube (*18C)
Born 3/3/1867, Ballenstedt.
(d) Robert Strube (18D)
Married Lina ? (18B–1).26 STRUBE 31
(e) Paul Strube (18E)
Married Minna Stahl (18E–1).
2. Also a composer.
Married Marta Grosse (*19A), 1/29/1893, Yonkers, N.Y. She had a
brother, Johannes Grosse (19B), mayor of Sorau, who married Helene
Boden (19B–1).
Children:
(a) Claire M. M.

Just a note to let people know that I believe I found the first wife of Christian Wolf, Wolff, Wolfe. She is the mother to the children born prior to 1812. Henry, Catherine, Susanna and John (Johan).

While looking at a record for Henry, there was a record right above his that reads:

Anna Maria, wife of Christian Wolf, maiden name Ludwig. Died 26 Mar 1811 aged 35 years, 1 month, 11 days.

This record was found in Pennsylvania Town and Church records. Lancaster, Ephrata, Bethany United Church of Christ. Cocalico Reformed Graveyard.

Christian & Sarah Stoner, were my 4th great grandparents. I descend from their daughter, Maria, who married Lewis Sponsler.

Melissa :)

Well, let's see. My GF, Herschel Allen Monroe, Jr. was born 1927 Fairfield, IL and died 1996 Effingham, IL. His parents were Monroe Sr. born 1898 died 1949 in Fairfield, and Mollie Wolf(e), born 1901 died 1986 also in Fairfield. My grandfather, Monroe Jr., told us stories about their farmhouse just on the north side of Fairfield (from my memory and looking at online maps... I think they lived on the corner of Co Rd. 1050N and 2000E) where his grandfather, who would be Mollie Wolf's father, would stand out behind the house for days on end speaking to his spirit ancestors. He always told us growing up we were part Indian, but since he passed no one can remember what tribe he claimed. I've gotten Cherokee, Blackfoot, Blackhawk, and Crow out of my elder family members. Alot of people have tried to help and can find no proof, but I'm going to keep looking for the fun and education of it. Plus I don't want to believe my Papa would make that up.

I've been searching for 5 years to no avail to trace my family to some rumored Cherokee's in Southern Illinois. If anyone has any idea, please please please let me know. My Grandfather told us all of our Cherokee heritage, but he has since passed and no one can remember how the line went. I just want to trace the line and be sure which clan we came from, so I can learn more about them. My family names consist of Wolf(e), Monroe, Shelby and Chapman.

Melba,
You don't know how funny it is to hear someone else say "my" Aunt Emma, Erna, Hulda. That's how (of course) I remember them and yet you and I have never met.
Do you have a tree on Ancestry? I couldn't find anything and I would love to see what you have. Mine is still a work in progress with almost 1000 persons. It is a public tree so you should be able to view it. It is listed as Robert Hoyle Family Tree. Maybe we could combine a lot of data.
I too want my grandkids to know where they came from and, as you know, families just don't know each other like we used to. It is such a shame and they have missed so much.
If you have photographs of some of the burial sites for our family I would appreciate copies of them. They sound beautiful from your description. I probably will never get to see them since I rarely ever get to Texas.
I understand, from the green book (as I call it because the cover is green), that you are an Illinois transplant. I too am a transplant, via my wonderful wife of over 30 years, to the State of Wisconsin.
The book I referred to is called "German Roots - Texas Growth" "Descendants of Caroline Traybig and George Wassermann" by Jan Wassermann Kelm dated 1989. I do not believe it is in print as she took orders for it when she published it and I believe she only made copies if she had orders. It is spiral bound. I will try to photocopy it for you.
My sister recently gave me a photo album and she identified as many people as she could. I will be scanning the photos and putting them on CD for everyone and would be happy to include you. CD's are cheap, no charge cus. I do sometimes procrastinate so I will not have it done REAL soon but hopefully not to long.
Again, please email me directly at mdhoyle@gmail.com and I will send Marie's photograph to you upon receipt.
Look forward to hearing from you again soon.
Mike
Michael D.
Yes, I am Melba Carol Wetz, but I do not have a copy of the green book. How can I get one? You are correct that my grandmother Selma is the daughter of Louis and Emma Wassermann Wolf and the sister of Louis Frederick. I remember my Aunt Emma, Erna, Hulda, and Travis Wolf, Uncle Bennie. Friedrich & Marie Treude Wolf are buried in such a beautiful place, the Mayer Cemetery. It has one of the best view in hill country. My other gggrandparents the Treybig/Wassermann's are buried just down the road in the Shelby Cemetery, with the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Roundtop just a few miles away. Our family has a great history that I want to pass on to my children and grandchildren. I would appreciate electronic copies of their pictures. Thanks very much for your help! Melba

Just curious, are you Melba Carol? If so and you have the green book, you can find me on pages 87, 89 and 90. You're listed on page 53. Your grandmother, Selma, is my grandfather, Louis Fredrick, sister.

George John Wolf was a
son of John George Wolf, who emigrateei to
America from Wittemberg, Prussia, Ger-
many, early in the eighteenth century. In
the homeland his father's lands adjoined
those formerly owned by Martin Luther.
John George Wolf came to this country to
avoid conscription, settling in Nockamixon
township, Bucks county, Pennsylvania, and
there became a farmer. He married and
had children : Katherine, George John, of
whom further, John, William, Samuel,
Dorothy.

George John Wolf, son of John George
Wolf, was born in Wittemberg, Prussia,
Germany, and when nine years of age ac-
companied his parents to America. He
learned the carpenter's trade and became
a contractor and builder, erecting many
houses in the vicinity of Cressonville and
Germantown, Pennsylvania. He married,
April 5, 1832, Salome, daughter of Jacob
and Anna Maria (Schaub) Janney, her
father a native of Basel, Switzerland, her
mother born in Baden, Germany. Jacob
Janney's passport for the United States,
dated April 10, 1805, was signed by the
President of the Swiss Council, and his
certificate from the Reform church bears
the date May 12, of the same year. The
vessel, sailing from Amsterdam, on which
he engaged passage, was wrecked, and he
lost all of his worldly possessions, includ-
ing a silk weaving machine, which he had
brought from his native land. Because of
this misfortune he and his wife were obliged
to come as Redemptioners and were obliged
to contract with William Bonnell for four
years' service, he paying their indebtedness
for passage. Children of George John and
Salome (Janney) Wolf: Elizabeth; Kather-
ine, died young; George, William, Hannah,
Emma Rosena, of previous mention, mar-
ried Alexander P. Their son Louis Wolf married Emma Wassermann in Shelby, and their daughter Selma Louise Emilie Wolf married my grandfather, Adolph Wetz.
Hi David, I was looking through a book that was sent to me a few years ago from a distant cousin, about the Wolf/Wolfe family (notebook) and it has a picture of Elizabeth Priest, Milo Adam Wolf's wife. I will scan it and send it to you if you get me an email. I am descended from Orsamus, another son of Isaac and Nancy. Isaac and Nancy Wolf were my great great grandparents.
Hi Shirley, Nice to talk to you. Sorry it took me so long to get back to you, lot going on in life right now and I always feel a little guilty spending to much time on my passion, family history, when family needs me (smile). I don't know a lot about Mahala but I was sent a book and pictures a few years back from another distant cousin. I have not verified where these pictures were acquired but I have my great grandfather Orsamus Small Wolfe, his wife [Pamela] Fuller, Nancy Small [Schmahl],my gr gr grandmother and Samantha Amanda Wolf. The pictures are mystifying because Orsamus and Samantha have features that could be Spanish or Native American and I always thought they were German. There is a letter in this file from a distant cousin that speaks of a story in the family about this. I will send you an email and scan this picture and send it to you this morning. Have you found out anything else about Mahala? Pam

OK... Mahala is the dau. of Deacon Isaac Wolf and Nancy Schmahl/Small. Isaac is the son of John Wolf and Christiana Guy. I have tentative information on the origins of both John Wolf and Christiana, but it needs more documentation.

Mahala married Rev. David Johnson who d. at Jamestown, Greene Co. OH. I have a death for Mahala in OH, in Jan of 1861, but I don't know where I got that, and I don't know where, in Ohio she died.

You can contact me directly at rcsnyder2 at earthlink.net.
Mahala Wolf Johnson, daughter of Isaac and Nancy Schmal Wolf was my gr gr gr grandmother. I understand you are a descendant of her brother, Milo. I have very little info on her. I know Isaac and Nancy are buried in Loudonville, but have not located Mahala. Also I understand that someone has pictures of the Wolf family? If you have any info i would so greatly appreciate sharing. I have no pictures except my gr grandmother who was Mahala and David Johnson's granddaughter.
Hi Shirley,

I believe you need to contact David Jones who's also posted in this message board. I believe he's a descendant of Mahala, and has more info than I would have. My wife is a descendant of Mahaha's brother, Boston, who died in Barry County, Michigan. I have some information further back on the Wolf side of the family, and also the Schmahls. I'll get back to you soon with what I have.
Bob Snyder
Midland, Michigan
