I need some help with finding information on my 3rd Great Grandfather, Philop Wolverton (alternate spelling Woolverton). The only information I have on him is that he was born in 1856 in Pennsylvania and was married to Josephine Kramer. His children were Jacob & Caria. He may have been from Iowa. If anyone has information on him, it would be greatly appreciated.

I found Newt's marriage record to my grandmother in 1935 but there was no birth date on that record. So I still need his date of birth and date of death. And anything about him that you know. Since my grandmother's last name was given as Thomason, I now know that her marriage to Newt was her second marriage since her maiden name was Redner.

I am looking for information on Newt Wolverton who lived in Brownwood, Texas, early-to-mid-1900s. He married my grandmother, Nina Virginia Redner who was married three times. I do not know if the Wolverton marriage was before or after her Thomason marriage. She lived in Brownwood, Texas 1890-1982. I am hoping to find date of birth, date of death, and date of marriage for Newt Wolverton.

I also found an article on one son of Joseph Athon and Mary Wolverton. The article is available on ancestry.com if you have a subscription. It may be on-line elsewhere also. The book it is in is "Portrait and biographical album of Vermilion and Edgar Counties, Illinois : containing full page portraits and biographical sketches..." The article is on p. 991, on ancestry it says "2_991". The article is on their son Josias F. Athon, and it does confirm that Joseph Athon married Mary Wolverton of Frederick, Maryland and tells where this couple lived for the first few years of their marriage.

Nancy Smith

There is an excellent book on the Wolverton/Woolvertons that is mentioned several places. I am not sure if it is still in print because I didn't intend to buy it, but it is listed several places and you can find the Author's address on-line. I just googled the title. If you look in World Cat it will tell you libraries that have it and how near they are to you.

"The Woolverton Family 1693-1850 and Beyond" by David A. McDonald and Nancy N. McAdams, Rockport, Maine, Penobscot Press, c2001. ISBN 0897254384.

When I googled the book one of references led me to Glenn Gohr's home page which not only described the book, but also had a reference to additional changes posted by the authors since publication. An address was given to order the book from Nancy McAdams. There were also sources for buying used books etc.

I hope this might help you.

Nancy Smith

Thanks for the input. I'm afraid I'm not much help either, though I am happy to see that someone has actually traced this a bit (all I come across are names and dates everyone copied from one another).

I agree with you: Pennsylvania records are almost impossible to come by unless you go to Pennsylvania and visit each individual church. Strangely enough, I've also found current Pennsylvania genealogists to be oftentimes a stuffy and unpleasant group to work with - like their in some sort exclusive members-only club. Ha, ha.

I'm unsure of the connection Between Mary Polly Wolverton Athon and Catherine McSherry Wolverton, because I believe that Mary Polly was born in Maryland before moving on to Indiana with her husband and children. I'll have to look in to it more.

Thanks again.

I know I haven't made any discoveries on this Catherine.. I have erased both Charles and George as husbands of this Catherine McSherry, then added Charles back. There seems to be documentation for marriages of a Catherine McSherry to both a George Wolverton and to a Charles Wolverton. The DAR records show Catherine b.1794 VA/WV married George Wolverton 1790-1830 and THIS George died in IN. His wife Catherine (McSherry) Wolverton died in ILL about or after 1860 so this is NOT the Catherine Wolverton, heir to Barnabas McSherry, and the Catherine who herself died about 1825 in Adams Co. and named Barnabas' nephews as administrators of her estate. I have NOT actually seen papers on Catherine's will or estate. But I do believe that she may be the mother of Mary Polly.

I remember that I had at one time followed the husband and children of either Mary Polly or her sister Rosanna, in censuses, but that was erased long ago. The children of the Catherine who married George Wolverton can be found in Illinois or Indiana censuses and include a William McSherry Wolverton, which might be a clue to her father.

I find Pennsylvania records so hard to come by, that I end up looking for other ancestors, even though both of my father's parents were descendants of Pennsylvanians for over a hundred years. I am sorry I cannot be of more help to you.

Nancy Smith

I've seen somewhere that there's a Sarah Walton connected to the Ekleberry family. I may have made another random mishap in connecting them, but it seems that Ezekiel and Mary Ann (Polly) Torbridge's son Jacob was involved with her. My sources haven't proven anything yet as my only source is my Grandmother and Uncle's research (and i'm not positive i have any charts on them.)

I so far can trace the Ekleberry family back to the Brown family which later had an E added (Browne.).

My relation is through the Stephens/Browne Connection on my Mother's side.

"The Woolverton Family: 1693-1850 and Beyond" by Macdonald and McAdams is an important resource for tracing any of the Woolverton/Wolverton lines. It can be found at major genealogy libraries, such as Salt Lake City, Chicago, and Fort Wayne. To purchase a copy, contact: Nancy McAdams, 1428 Pinnacle View Dr. NE, albuquerque, NM 87112. I think the cost is around $50.
For more information, please contact me off-line at mwwallace@charter.net

Since much of C.E. Wolverton's material for his 1964 book "History, Origin, and Heritage of the Wolverton & Woolverton Families" is taken from "family tradition", it is wise to try to find collaborating documentation. Take a look at Macdonald & McAdams' fine book, "The Woolverton Family: 1693-1850 and Beyond" (2001). On p.398ff, you will find a well reasoned analysis of all the available resource data concerning Joab Jacob Wolverton, son of Joel William and Sara Gano. Two corrections on pg.400:
1. The family can be found in the 1840 census in Henry Co., VA.
2. "at page 10 of the" 1870 (not 1880 as printed) "census of Barker Twp..."
I believe I found an incorrect line in Mr. Wolverton's books. He says Joab J Wolverton (married to Catherine Bartlett) is the son of Joel William Woolverton.

Number one, I can't seem to find any EVIDENCE for this claim and number two, many things don't match up. Such as the places of birth, the name change, etc.

If someone could please provide me with supporting evidence of this line, I'd be very grateful. Or if you know of someone I could contact about this, that would help, too.

I hate the idea of having incorrect information in my tree, and right now, it looks to me like I have several generations of it.

Hello,
I replied to the email, not sure if you received it. I would love to correspond and share any info that i have with you and Mary. I do not have a lot of info on Cason's parent's and older generations but definitely on Cason, his children from his first wife, and his children with Ruth. Anything you want to know just ask. I am always looking for pictures of the family, so if there is any that you would like to share that would be so awesome. I am sure she knows stuff that I don't know as well.
Blessings,
Janet
I am trying to trace my family. My great great grandfather
Charles Wolverton lived his Alexandria PA. We are trying
to find his father and I am wondering if a Charles Wolverton
that moved from Alexandria PA to Missouri in l820 when
he married Mary Ann Brownfield could be his father.
He and Mary Ann had children but none of them were named
Charles. I had been told that my gggrandfather was possibly
his illegitimate son. I know this is very difficult to trace. Thank. Linda Wolverton Daulton
