The tombstone was placed on the grave in 2005 a few days after I made this post. I never saw the stone but made the post here in an attempt to find the grave. Members of the Sons of Confederate Veterans camp in Columus, Ga. located the grave and placed the stone on it. I'm located about 70 miles from there and was trying to help them find the grave.
Al

I am not familiar with the family ...my Womack family was Abraham Womack b. 1742 Henrico VA died 1804 Hancock GA.
Abraham shows to be married 2 times (1) Martha Mitchell and (2) Martha Watkins ...he and Martha show to have a son William G Womack b. 1792. They had a daughter Elizabeth Womack that is my ancestor.

I wonder if William G Womack that is on the census in Alabama next to Sarah A Womack is the same as above.
My Elizabeth married Benjamin Steven Coleman of Butler Co. Alabama and died close to there.

I am not sure that Abraham Womack b. 1742 didn't have a wife named Sarah A.? It would be worth checking out.

Go to the Butler County Alabama GenWeb site and check this out and see what you think.
Would these Womacks be connected to the William Gaddy Womack born in 1820 who married a Catherine and lived in Schley Co., Georgia? His father was William H. Womack and mother Sarah Gaddy. I do not have my files readily available to check, but I know some of my Womacks moved to AL. Not sure if he did.

Hi,
Don't know if we've corresponded on this subject or not.
If we have it's probably been 5 or 6 years ago which was the last time I banged my head against this particular brick wall.
Wondering if you've found anything out on Mary E. Womack's parents. There was a Joseph Womack who seemed really promising; he had a daughter Mary E. who married a Williams unfortunately that Williams was not Henry L. as far as I could determine.
I'm Christine D. ( Williams ) Hanna's Grandson Jerry.
Claude Custer Williams was my Great Grandfather.

Would like some info on their descendents.

Have just recently seen where one of his daus., Appelonia, married John W. Purvis who must have been about 40 yrs. her Sr. He died in 1875 and left some young children.

Also a dau , of Timothy, Mary, married John Pearce, in 1858 and I believe she divorced him ca1865. Not sure would like some info on her.

The wife of Timothy was Jeanette, does anyone have her maiden name?

Louise
castensel@bellsouth.net

I do believe the last I saw on Appelonia was the 1860 census where she was below Yazoo city in the household of William Leak Johnston., his wifw was Mary O,Neal, if I am right talking off the top of my head.I had no idea how she may have been connected to that family.

As to Mary who married John Pearce, from what little I could find on her reocrds, I got the impression that she soon divorced him but not sure about that.

I believ again, in the 1860 census, she was in the household of Milton and Iphigenia andcalled a semstress but the census records.

Louise
castensel@bellsouth.net

Sam, I'm ready to take the DNA test. But having trouble sending the info to anyone of the web sites I've used before. Including yours. A lot of the Womack message boards are not up to date. How do I get my info to the right web site? Also, what web sight do youlike the best, Ancestry.com or Archives.com.? Not impressed so far with Archives!

Thank you for the information. I don't remember getting this email and my memory is pretty good. But, I would like to point out some errors in your second hand information.

1850 Census: ELVINA is spelled ELVINA in 1850.
1850 Census WILLIAM WOMACK is listed as 10 y/o. If he married in 1853, he would have been 13 y/o.
1860 Census WILLIAM J. WOMACK is listed as 32 y/o.
1840 WILLIAM WORMACK is listed as having 4. In 1850 RACHAEL had only 3 children born before 1840.
1860 there is no Ginnette Womack living withe J. W. Penny.
1870 RACHEL WARMACK living with J. W. PENNEY, was listed as being born in SC. RACHAEL WORMACK in 1850 gives her place of birth as AR.
1880 RACHEL WORMACK is listed as 60 y/o. Info given in 1850 gives her age as 37.

I won't bother to prove or disprove the rest as this is not my line. But I will add that it is difficult for me to believe that RACHAEL would have gone off and left her children, to move around the country following her family all over the country.

Thanks, but I believe we are talking about 2 different families.
Linda,

Whether the name on census and other records be Womack or Warmack, most were originally Womack.

If I recall, Robert E. Burke, Jr., administrator of Womack and Warmack DNA testing explained to you Nov 2007 about Obadiah Womack, born ca. 1810 TN, who had children with Unknown Moses, sister of David Lafayette Moses and Barbara M. Moses Jones.

For those who don't know about Obadiah Womack, born ca. 1810 Bedford Co., TN most likely to David Womack and Elizabeth Hawkins, married 1st Elizabeth Woods 29 Jan 1830 Gallatin Co., TN. He had children with Unknown Moses in Mississippi before 1850. He married next Martha Carver 11 Feb 1858 Monroe Co., AR. Obadiah must have died before 14 Jan 1866, the date Martha Carver Womack married John Furlow in Monroe Co., AR. Obadiah Womack's first wife, Elizabeth Woods and their children, nor Obadiah and his children by Unknown Moses have not been found in 1850, with the exception of Elizabeth Woods and Obadiah Womack's son, William James Womack, who was living in Lincoln Co., TN with Obadiah's brother, Elisha H. Womack, his wife, Mary and their children in Lincoln Co., TN. William James Womack married Elizabeth Ward 6 Oct 1853 Lincoln Co., TN and by 1860 William James Womack, his wife, Elizabeth and their children born in TN were in Franklin Co., IL living with his mother, Elizabeth Woods Womack. The household included some of William James Womack's siblings born in TN.

Also Linda, Robert Burke wrote to you about William Penny's Will made in Coweta Co, GA on 26 Jun 1852 named his children: Green Penny, JOHN WESLEY Penny, Volney B Penny, Joseph Penny, RACHEL WOMMACK, and George W. Penny.

Rachel (nee Penny) Womack/Warmack's husband William Womack/Warmack was enumerated on the 1840 Census of Carroll Co, MS She was enumerated on the 1850 Carroll Co., MS census. Her household included their daughter ELVIRA. Her name was not Elvina. After 1850 Rachel and her children moved closer to Rachel's brother John Wesley Penney in Yazoo Co., MS. Rachel's daughter, Ginnette was living with John W. Penny and his wife in 1860.

The Bureau of Land Management has land patents for Rachel's husband, William, his father, John and his brother John, Jr. The surname on the patents is Warmack.

Obadiah Womack was born in Tennessee. Elvira Womack/Warmack's father was born in GA. His family moved from Montgomery Co., GA to Mississippi before 1829.

1850 Carroll Co., MS
Rachel Womack 37 AR Rachel nee Penny, widow of William
Mary 14 MS
Ginnette 12 MS
Green 12 MS
John 9 MS
Elvira 4 MS
William 3 MS

Elvira Warmack married Alford Blalock in Yazoo Co. and they were living there in 1870.

Mississippi Marriages, 1776-1935
Yazoo County
29 Oct 1867
Elvira Warmack
Alfred K. Blalock

Rachel Penny Womack/Warmack was living with her brother, John Wesley Penny in Yazoo Co., MS in 1870.

1870 Dist. 2, Yazoo City, Yazoo Co., MS
House 1416
A. K. Blalock 32 MS
Elvira 22 MS
Rose 5 mos. MS

1870 Dist 2, Yazoo City, Yazoo Co., MS
House 1504
J. W. Penney 64 SC John Wesley Penny
Elizabeth 55 MS
Rachel Warmack 55 SC Rachel Penney Womack/Warmack

In 1880 Rachel was living with her daughter, Elvira and her husband, Alford R. Blalock/Blaylock in Burnet Co., TX.

1880 Pct. 2 and 7, Burnett Co., MS
Alfred Blaylock 43 MS
Elvira 42 MS GA SC (her father was born in GA)
Rosey 10 MS
Elizabeth 8 MS
Christopher 6 MS
Mary 3 TX
Rachiel 2 mos. TX
Rachiel Warnick 60 SC SC SC MOTHER

The Blaylock/Blalock-Womack researchers have the daughter of Unknown Womack and Rachel Unknown, Elvira Womack was born 1847 MS and died died between 1883 and 1900. They cite the 1880 Burnet Co., TX census.

The widower Alfred Blaylock, age 63, born in MS was enumerated in Mississippi Township, Columbia Co., AR in 1900 with their daughter, Rachel, age 20, born Apr 1883 TX, and their son, Edward H., age 16, born Nov 1883 TX.

To refresh your memory about your correspondence with Robert E. Burke, Jr., here are his exact comments written to you 21 Nov 2007

"1) The Rachel Womack in the 1850 Census of Carroll Co, MS was NOT Rachel Moses Womack. She was Rachel Penny Warmack.
2) The father of David Obadiah Womack was named Obadiah Womack. This family was missed in the 1850 Census (as were about 10 percent of all Womack/Warmack families).
3) I do not know the name of the mother of David Obadiah Womack, but I agree with you that her maiden name was likely Moses.
4) Obadiah Womack remarried in Monroe Co, AR: Obediah WOMACK, 45, to Martha CARVER, 18, at res of Alfred Carver, by Wm. HH Fellers JP, Cache Twp, 11 Feb 1858
5) Obadiah Womack is on the 1860 Census in Coahoma Co, MS, p.733, family 18. With him is second wife Martha Carver and children including David Obadiah and William. These two children were also enumerated in Monroe Co, AR in 1860.
6) I do not know what happened to Obadiah Womack after 1860. He apparently died, since Martha remarried in Monroe Co, AR: FURLOW, John, 52, to Martha WOMMACK, 27, 4 Jan 1866 by Peter Jolly JP
7) In the 1850 Census, David Moses was in Coahoma Co, MS, and in 1860 he was in Monroe Co, AR. His sister, Barbara Moses married Hosea Jones on 3 Jan 1840 in Monroe Co, TN. I cannot find that family in 1850, but in 1840 they were in Polk Co, TN and in 1860 they were in Monroe Co, AR.
8) The children of Obadiah Womack and Unknown Moses were living with David Moses and Barbara Moses Jones in the 1860 and 1870 Censuses of Monroe Co, AR.
9) I am certain that the Rachel Womack in the 1850 Census of Carroll Co, MS was in fact Rachel Penny Warmack, here is the proof:
10) The name Warmack is just a variation of Womack. Some families went back on forth on these variations well into the late 1800s.
11) William Warmack (along with John, Samuel, and Simon Warmack) had BMO land patents in Carroll Co, MS. All of these were in the same township/range, so all within a mile of one another.
12) William Warmack was on the 1840 Census of Carroll Co, MS, and the numbers in his family match precisely with Rachel's family in the 1850 Census.
13) William Penny left a will in Coweta Co, GA dated 26 Jun 1852; children listed in the will were Green, John Wesley, Volney B, Joseph, Rachel Wommack, and George W.
14) Green Penny, brother of Rachel Penny Warmack, was on the 1850 Census of Carroll Co, MS on p.290A, family 513. Thus, he was 27 families before Rachel Warmack Penny.
15) Green Penny's wife in the 1850 Census was named Ginette. I do not know her maiden name. Rachel Penny Warmack named children Ginette and Green.
16) In the 1860 Census of Yazoo Co, MS, there is a Jane Warmack, age 23, living with J W Penny. This was John Wesley Penny, brother of Rachel Penny Warmack. I think "Jane" Warmack was a censs enumerator mistakes for Ginette/Jeanett Warmack.
17) William Warmack's brother John Warmack lived in Yazoo Co, MS as well.
18) I cannot find Rachel Penny Warmack in the 1860 Census, but in 1870, she was living with her brother J W Penny in Yazoo Co, MS.
19) John Warmack, brother of William Warmack, moved to Holmes Co, MS where he died about 1882. In his will, he mentions a nephew, William Warmack. This was William Warmack, son of William Warmack and Rachel Penny."

Linda, I hope will be helpful to the descendants of Rachel Penney and William Warmack/Womack.

Tamara,

In your data base you have Richard Womack was born Aug 1870 Louisiana. He was 9 years old in 1880, born in Arkansas. According to the 1900 census, Richard was born Aug 1870 (Dallas Co.) Arkansas. In addition to the research of Annette Carpenter Womack, Robert E. Burke, Jr., administrator of Womack DNA testing, and the descendants of John Wylie Womack and Mary A. V. Overby, I'm also adding your information. I'm adding the disclaimer that I cannot verify that John Womack's name was John Wylie Womack, and I cannot prove his wife's maiden name was Overby, nor can I prove that his wife from 1854ish to 1870 was the same wife he had in 1880. Her maiden name, Overby is from a descendant of John Wylie Womack.

Your descending Womack line:

Richard Womack, Sr. - Mary Puckett
Richard Womack, Jr. - Elizabeth (last name not proven)
Richard Womack, III - Ann "Nancy" Childers
David Womack - Mildred Pryor
Richard Womack - Unknown Wife
Andrew Womack - Elizabeth Unknown
John Wylie Womack - Mary A. V. Overby
Richard Womack - Georgia Reddin
Elvina "Vina" Womack - James Arthur Wheeler

John Wylie Womack with his parents in 1850:

1850 Simpson Co., MS
Andrew Womack 54 GA
Elizabeth 51 MS
Eliza 19 MS
John 17 MS b. 30 Dec 1832 Simpson Co., MS < < < < <
Andrew 14 MS
Hester A. 10 MS

1860 Beat 1, Simpson Co., MS
John Wammack 25 MS
Mary V 25 MS
Drusiller 5 MS
Andrew J. 3 MS
Cornelia E. In 1880 they were enumerated in Chester, Dallas Co., AR. She died before 22 Apr 1888, the date Jeremiah married a 2nd time.

The Womacks of Dallas Co., AR sometimes spelled their surname Woomack, but they were biologically Womack.

1880 Nix, Dallas Co., AR
John Womack 58 MS
Polly 49 VA
Bayliss 19 MS
William 12 AR
Rich (Richard) 9 AR < < < <

Elvina "Vina" Womack was the daughter of Georgia Reddin and Richard Womack, son of John Wylie Womack and Mary A. V. "Polly" Overby. Elvina was born 3 May 1902 Dallas Co., AR, died 5 May 1942 Muskogee, Muskogee Co., OK and is buried in Memorial Park Cemetery west of Muskogee. She married James Arthur Wheeler 11 Apr 1921 CLARK Co., AR. Her name on their marriage license was Elvina Woomack of Manning, Dallas Co., AR, and his name was James A. Wheeler of Manning, Dallas Co., AR.

I've made the assumption she was Richard Womack and Georgia Reddin's daughter based on the Womack nieces living with Richard Womack's brother, Balis Womack in 1910 who were enumerated with their parents in 1900. I'm not sure of Richard's son, Albert's mother. He was born prior to Richard's 10 May 1896 Dallas Co., AR marriage to Georgia Reddin.

1900 Nix, Dallas Co., AR
Richard Woomack 29 (Aug 1870) AR MS MS
Georgia 24 Nov 1875 AR AR AR
Albert 7 Jun 1892 AR AR AR
*Laura E. When you grow up without
family even the ones you don't know exit count. I could
have been here about 10 years ago if people hadn't kept
insisting that Elizabeth Ryals mar. thier kin. Wm. Jr.'s
name most likly was Wm. John Womack/Warmack. Named for
dad and brother or dad and granfather? Anyway I have had
some very nice Womack's answer some questions for me no
matter how the name is spelled. To those Thanks Tons.
Hope all have a nice Thanksgiving. Very Sincerily,M.W.

Re: montgomery Co. land

Wm. Sr. was on jury list 1794. So he was 21 and older.
Land in montgomery 1798 is Sr. 700 acres.Land in 1803 is
Wm. Jr. 100 acres. Land in 1805 is John. So take Wm. Sr.
and John together is 1350 acres. That leaves Wm.Jr. Wm.
Jr. not listed in 1805 list. But Wm. Sr. and John are with
1350 acres for Wm.Sr. and 650 acres for John. They accident
ly put Sr. and John together and left off Wm. Jr.

Land in 1809 960 acres. John sold his land in Montgomery
Co. Ga. He went to Twiggs Co. Ga. John was already mar.
with kids. All his kids born Montgomery Co. He's in Twiggs
Co. 1810.In Twiggs til June 15 1819. Justice of the Peace
He shows up in Pulaski Co. Ga. with Sherrards on court
records. The Wm. that died in 1817 Pulaski Co. Ga. is Wm.
Sr. So where are Wm. Jr. and family?

Sincerliy,M.W.

On Ga. Vertual Vault is a headwright for William Warmack
in 1803. This William would be 1803 minus 21 born 1792.
William his dad was 38 yrs.old in 1792.And the older son
William died so he named another one William. Or he named
his sons for people he wanted .Then he named William.

This son of William Womack/Warmack mar. Elizabeth Ryals.
Sincerliy,M.W.

Re: My John & William

On old wesite that had early records of Mongomery Co. Ga.
William is listed in Jury list in 1794. John is not 21 yet
so William is already at lest 21 so his age is at lest
past 1774.Since Montgomery Co. was created in 1793.And
most of the time with first Jury's they picked older well
established men with good reputations. So this puts him
old enough to be John's dad.And in book Some Early Tax
Digests of Ga. Willam is listed first then John which
usualy means Father and son.
I took John's age 1775 minus 21 since his dad would be
about that age when John was born and I get 1754. The
age William would be born.

On Blackshear mar. Since William deeded land to David
Blackshear it could have been a douery .As Henry Fulgam
deeded land to Joel Sherrard. No price was stated in
both of these. Somtimes the douery wasn't paid for years.

On Elizabeth Ryals.I have thought for years that one of
my people mar. her. When John came to Yazoo Co. Ms.The
Census didn't name the spouse. But all i have on this is
that there were other mar. to Sherrards in Ms. But that
doesn't mean that the one John Mar. first was still her.
Sorry we were not on the same page. I get excited when
talking about genealogy. Hope this helps in putting us in
the same page. Thanks,M.w.

Re: My John & William

I think we may not be understanding each other.

First off, a couple questions. Why do you think William Womack in Montgomery Co, GA married a Blackshear? I know the Womacks had dealing with the Blackshears, but I am not sure what that means.

Secondly, do you think that William Womack in Montgomery Co, GA could have been John's brother, not his father?

I think we can agree that John Womack/Warmack married a daughter of Joel Sherrard, due to Joel Sherrard Warmack in Copiah Co, MS, and the dealings with the Sherrards in Pulaski Co, GA and in Yazoo Co, MS.

I am also pretty sure that one of the Womack/Warmacks in your group married Elizabeth Ryals, daughter of William Ryals, who left a will in Montgomery Co, GA naming daughter Elizabeth Womack. Plus, one of John Womack's deeds in in Montgomery Co, GA mentions Ryal's corner. Possibly John's first wife (Miss Sherrard) died and John remarried to Elizabeth Ryals?

The John Womack who married Mary Dargan was thought (by me and a couple other researchers) to be John Womack, son of Frederick Womack of Effingham Co, GA. This John lived in Savannah, Chatham Co, GA. For certain, he married Mary Hudson in 1807 and they divorced in 1813. He was sued for mismanaging the estate of his brother Frederick Womack Jr. He also mismanaged the estate of one of his Womack nephews. I am not sure now he is the same John Womack who married Mary Dargan, since she was alive in 1808 (after John married Mary Hudson), unless John Womack and Mary Dargan also divorced. The tearing of the will of William Dargan by John Womack seems to fit in with the bad things this man did.
