I'm looking for information, photo's etc. Abraham and Frankia would be my 4x Great Grandparents on my dad's side of the family, which is the Freeborn or Freeburn side, the spelling was changed along the way. So back to Abraham Woodcock, I have him born Jan 27 1760 in Kinderhook Columbia New York USA and he died in 1835 in Lennox and Addingtion Ontario.I know nothing more about him and even less about Frankia. I'am fairly new at this so I would appreciate all the help I can get. Thanks

Ellen married James Ratcliffe, and Mary married Joseph Ratcliffe, I think. I don't know if they were brothers. Mary & Joseph had at least 7 children. I have 9 children for Ellen.

How nice that St Gregory's records are so complete. You seldom find a father listed on an illegitimate child.

My email is linsfam @ myfairpoint . net if it would be easier to write that way. My ancestry subscriptioin ends in a week so we may not be able to correspond this way after that.

Check also Standish Hall RC. See also Pete Barlow's website listed above in one of the first replies. He's done very detailed research.

I also have George married to Ellen Ollerton and George's daughter Ellen married my great grandfather James Ratcliffe, a marriage which produced my grandfather, also James. Which other daughter married a Ratcliffe brother? I missed that.

George Woodcock's baptismal certificate gives his mother's maiden name as Ellen Brown. St. Gregory's records all do this, except in cases of illegitimacy and sometimes even then, as in the case of Cecily Roscoe and Joseph Woodcock.

Writington Hall Chapel records sound interesting. Must track them down. St Wilfred's is C of E. Thanks for that.

I don't have access to RC parish records, and they are not available online anywhere, so I've been at a disadvantage there. You could be right on George. Pete Barlow has Thomas married to Ellen Cuerdon. From where do you have a marriage to Ellen Brown? There were two distinct Woodcock families in Coppull so perhaps something got crossed somewhere. I have George married to Ellen Ollerton. Two of their daughters married Ratcliffes. Which family are you from?

Pete has many of the parish records from Wrightington Hall RC Chapel. It's interesting that yours are St Gregory's.

I knew nothing of Cecily Roscoe. I'll add that to my notes. I have quite a bit of information on Ellen Lowe as I made contact with a part of that family also. My Elizabeth's father is listed as Joseph on her marriage certificate but her birth lists only Margaret as her mother. Unless Joseph got his sister pregnant, I think she just used his name so her illegitimacy wouldn't be apparent. Joseph seemed more involved in her childhood than her mother was. Joseph married Ellen in St Wilfred, Standish. Whether RC or CofE, might be listed on the church database at Genuki.

All for now. Will compare more and write again. Thanks again.

Only just found your fantastic posting with link. Incredible! As someone with a Ratcliffe grandfather and two Woodcock great great grandfathers, it has answered a lot of questions. Just one point is at odds with my research: according to the parish records for St. Gregory's, Weldbank, George Woodcock was baptised (with twin sister Ellen - they run in the Woodcock family)in August 1824 but is the son of Thomas Woodcock and Ellen Brown (godparents Richard Woodcock and Elizabeth Riding (born Woodcock and the mother of two sets of twins). Have I got the wrong baptism?

I'm descended, I believe, from two of the sons of Thomas Woodcock and Ellen Brown. Legitimately from George Woodcock (his daughter, Ellen, was my great grandmother) and illegitimately from Joseph Woodcock. I am still researching the family but have a fair amount of information. What do you want to know?

Don't know whether your research has moved on since 08 but here goes...Joseph Woodcock(son of Thomas Woodcock and Ellen nee Brown was my great great grandfather and according to baptismal records at St Gregory's R.C. Church, Weldbank, Chorley, he was the father of John Roscoe, born to Cecily Roscoe of Charnock Richard in 1847. Some genealogical records suggest, incorrectly as far as I can see, that the couple married in Coppull in 1849. They do seem to have had their banns read 3 times in Coppull Parish Church in June 1850 but no marriage followed and Joseph subsequently married Ellen Lowe in Standish in 1853. I still have to establish whether this was at the Anglican or Roman Catholic Churches. Their daughter Helen (Ellen) was baptised at St. Gregs in 1855. Incidentally Cecily Roscoe, Joseph and his siblings were all baptised at St. Gregory's, as was your ancestor "Elizabeth Woodcock, daughter of Margaret Woodcock" in 1840. The records are held at Chorley library on microfiche.

So I'm probably stretching a bit far, but I'm trying to find the ancestors of George Woodcock, born about 1819. One census report said he was born in Staffordshire, England, but another (that otherwise matched so it is the same person) said he was born in Leeds, England.

He had a wife named Eliza and at least four children - Lavinia, Joseph, George, and Henry, the latter of whom I am descended from.

Any further information would be great! I'm especially interested to know if there's any politics in that line, because there's been quite a few politicians on that side.

I have zero info on the Woodcock family other than his name. But there is a chance that his name may have been Richard Freeman Woodcock instead of Robert but I can't be sure.

I'm pretty sure he died before 1920 as my aunt is listed as a widow in city directories in Windsor after that date.

I am looking for info about a Dr Richard (Dick) Woodcock who practiced and raised his family in Lethbridge, Alberta about the same time as your relative was living in Edmonton. His wife was Amanda. Have you happened across any information about him in your search for Woodcocks in that area. Uncle Dick was born in Iowa. He had two brothers I know nothing about names William and John. I do not find anyone named Robert of Freeman in their part of our family tree. In fact, my information about that part of my family is very sketchy.

I'm afraid I don't have much info to go on here so here's what I know.

Robert Freeman Woodcock was born in Canada (where exactly I don't know). He married by great aunt Vera Sheffiel(d) probably around 1913 in Alberta (most likely Edmonton area). She was born in 1893 so I would suspect he was born around the same time. They had a son David William Woodcock about 1914. He was born in Heatherdown, Alberta.

My family moved back to Ontario (Chatham/Windsor) around 1915/1916. I don't think Robert was with them as Vera is listed as a widow in city directories.

If this rings any bells with anyone, I would love to hear from you.

Hi Kent,
I am your half-brother Jeff (father Kenneth Nuell) and have information about Thena and Kenneth Woodcock. I have been doing a bit of research over the years and would be happy to help if you are still interested.
Cheers,
Jeff
jeffhrsn@mac.com
