Hi
I have been trying to find out about this also. Although not a member of the family I am researching the local coal mines.

It would be nice to know at which pit William had worked.

John Woodhead owner Intake colliery in the 1860s where his brother Samule was killed. He lived on Holm nook farm (if I remember rightly). I was wondering if this was the same John Woodhead.

It is interesting tyo know that he was found not guilty.

Clive Seal.

I have;
John 12.6.1777 (this is wishful thinking because if he isn't their child I don't see why his diary is in the family)
Betty 7.9.1783
Matthew 26.2.1786
William 9.9.1787
Luke 23.11.1788
Mary 4.4.1790
Abraham 5.2.1792
Maria 19.1.1794
Charlotte 17.10.1796
Betty 31.3.1799

These were all born in Meltham while there seems to be another Abraham having children in Roydedge. Unfortunately the baptism registers only record the mother in the case of Betty in 1799. They must have found a more efficient vicar!

My family is decended from the illegitimate son of Maria, Uriah.

I hope this helps
Felicity

Felicity - I am trying to trace the descendants of Abraham Woodhead and Mary Holdroyd (spelt in various ways) to ascertain whether they have any connection to my Woodhead family. Do you know the children of Abraham and Mary and if so could you please list them for me?

Thanks for you reply reedham1

I have searched for both John and Jack but to no avail. I don't have an address for him either other than Slaithwaite.

I have been in touch with a chap who uses his mother's surname before his Woodhead surname. He said he knew the name and agreed that my Jack was an Army man but that he had been dead a while now. He has no further information at all.
I don't know Jack's Army number or regiment so am goosed with that line of enquiry. I just keep hoping that as I post to forums someone will just pop up and say 'my Jack was in a Military band.
I live in hope :-)

Woodhead a relatively common name in Yorkshire. Jack is often used when the correct name is John and my brother has found people by looking them up by address (rather than name) or following a neighbour with an unusual name (and hoping no-one has moved!) My family (and I think this is a common Northern thing) have often been called by their middle name rather than their first name.
Hope this is helpful to you.

Hi,
My Woodheads are from Cumberworth, Kirkburton, West Yorkshire.
In 1850 they moved to Stalybridge in Cheshire. My grandfather came over in 1910 and may have been an accountant at a mill. The three mills they lived near at one time or another was Old Slater, another in Apponaug, and one I believe was Greystone. Sam arrived in 1910 and died in 1939 in Providence. Slaithewaite is rather close to my Woodheads
, where they may have been from Marsden,Meltham,Thong, Honley, originally. I feel that Sam may have known someone in Rhode Island, even not a direct, but some relative.

Hi
i have looked around Rhode Island for Woodheads. I found a Thomas Woodhead in Pawtucket. My grandparents lived in Mill Areas, like the Old Slater Mill. There was a Greystone Mill, mills in almost every big city, Central Falls had a mill, Apponaug Mill was in Warwick where my mother grew up.
There are many Woodheads all over the UK. Were yours originally from West Yorkshire in England?
Thank you,
Ruth

I think Spotland is near Salford? Many Woodheads from West Yorkshire crossed the Woodhead Tunnel to get jobs in Cheshire, Lancashire. The town of Woodhead is at the beginning of the Woodhead Tunnel, but Woodheads originated in West Yorkshire, mine in Almondbury.
Also some came to the United States via the Mormons.
My grandfather came over to work in a mill in Rhode Island.

Ruth

Thanks so much Ruth. I am going on the assumption since Lawrence's middle name is Woodhead, that is probably his mother's maiden name, or someone in the family's name. Thank you again for looking through your files for me.

Do you suggest that I make my tree private? I'd love to have feedback about your view.

Hi,

I have been researching my Woodheads in the Uk since 2003. My grandfather was a Woodhead. There are many many Woodhead branches and a lot of misinformation out there. Many had the same surname, Christian name, lived in the same area, at the same time. My line went from West Yorkshire, to Cheshire, others to Wales and Australia. I am from the United States and since I still have relatives my age in the UK, now in Kent, we have been able to get our line right. My grandmother was from Manchester. My mom was American/English. Just be careful, there are people out there trying to make money from newbies, just like here in the States, and harvest trees for their own purpose. I have no Lawrence in my line, going back to the 1600's. Be careful and you will have a great time without wasting money.

Ruth

I know quite a bit. He became a lumber man and quite well to do thugh he started from nothing immigrating to the US at age 14. He married and had 10 children of whom my great-grandmother is the 10th and final child. The family also lived in Jennings, Louisiana and were foresters there as well. There is a famous oak named from him and the Nuttall. Google Nuttall Oak. I would be glad to fill you in more very shortly, if you have interest. Best regards ~ Will Capps

Can anyone advise me on how to find the resting place of Jack woodhead. He was born circa 1922,died a 'good few years ago'and was from Slaithwaite which is in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire.
I know now he was in a brass band in Marsden and that he was stationed at Ripon Barracks circa 1954 where he also had something to do with music within his regiment.
I don't have his Army number so can't get any further forward with this yet but I would like to be able to find his place of burial and hopefully a photo or Army records.
Thank you

It looks like you're on the right track with George Woodhead born in Horbury, but I'm not convinced that Louisa died before 1901, as I've found the following 1911 census entry:

WOODHEAD, George Head Married 39 Waggoner At Mill Yorks Ossett
WOODHEAD, Louisa Wife Married 12 years 38 Worker At Home Yorks South Anston
WOODHEAD, Willie Son 8 Yorks Huddersfield
WOODHEAD, Fred Son 6 Yorks Huddersfield

Reference: RG14 PN27341 RD503 SD8 ED9 SN88
Registration District: Dewsbury
Sub District: Ossett
Parish: Ossett
Address: 7 Spa Street Ossett
County: Yorkshire (West riding)

There are a couple of interesting things about this entry, the first being that the couple had married 12 years previously (i.e. between 3rd Apr 1898 and 2 Apr 1899), and the second being that on the image it says that there had been 3 children born alive to the couple, and all 3 were still living, so where was the third one? Might it be George Henry?

There were only two possible marriages of a George Woodhead to a Louisa in the years 1898 and 1899, and the one in 1899 was in the December quarter so it would have been too late. The marriage in 1898 is of course George Woodhead and Louisa Clamp.

If you think this 1911 census entry could be for your George and Louisa Woodhead, it would be worth getting the birth certificate for Willie Woodhead (don't go for Fred as there are two likely birth entries) to see what his mother's maiden name was. If it's Clamp, then I think you can safely say that your George is the one born in Horbury.

By the way, I had a look at the certificates which you've put on your Ancestry tree, and George's occupation at the time of his marriage was a groom, and at the time of his son's birth it was a farm labourer. It's helpful to know this because it establishes that he didn't appear settled in any one occupation, therefore making it unsurprising that his occupation in 1911 could be different again, although not a million miles removed. :-)

Christine

So - just been following the grocer thought for an hour. Here's a possibility....

In the 1891 Census I have found a George Woodhead (b 1829)in Ossett, W.Yorks who is a Grocer
In the same household he has a son Joseph (b 1856) who is a grocer's assistant and ... wait for it ...
a son George (b 1872) who is a Gardener.

Now here's the intriguing bit. Louisa Clamp was a servant in a house in Huddersfield, just 7.5 miles away, in 1891.
Gardener's will have a reason to regularly visit big houses who employ servants won't they?

In the 1901 Census there is a George N Woodhead who is a boarder in Brightside, Sheffield, born in Ossett (next village to Horbury) age 28 (b 1872). Brightside is just 5 miles from where they married in Wadsley in 1898.

I already know by 1901 that Louisa is dead and the grandson is back living with his grandparents. Could George (1872) now be lodging

dada! Feels strong to me - what do you think. How do I prove it though? Am I just linking facts to make a story?

Will be interesting to weigh this up against what Mary has found later in the thread.

Mary,

Yes you have the Clamps there OK, Jabez is a real star with a name like that. He was still working the coal mines on the screens until into his 70's. There is an error on many of the Clamp trees out there in that they all make a huge assumption about Jabez MUM and who she married. They all appear to have adopted the same underlying flaw that she was living next door to her husbands parents with Neighbours. In fact she was living with her own parents and had married a George Clamp two streets away, who was living with his brother.

However, I would like to see what your dug up on the woodheads. and how you linked to 1869 and 1837 Georges please. That would be interesting.

Thank you for your efforts.

Much appreciated.

Bit confused here - sure I have found the correct Georges but George b. 1898 - is living with maternal grandparents Jabez Clampb. 1839 Church Gresley (quarry lab) and Martha (Hogg)Anston b. 1851. George's parents are George b 1869 who marries Louisa Clamp in 1898. Then grandfather George b. 18837 (if I have got the right one!) marries Lydia Shaw. However he is listed as a coal miner! Confusion! I am 95% sure this is the family but do not want to send you all the info I have incase they are the wrong ones! I worked backwards - Jabez Clamp is such an unusual (and brilliant) name that I started with him and worked down the line and across to George (1898) via Louisa cross checking as I went. You will find 100s of Clamps connected to Jabez on familysearch.org (brilliant free site). If you go onto the "Search" option at the top of this ancestry page, go onto the Public Member trees and enter Jabez as your search, quite a few trees come up and you may be able to contact the owners. If you cannot access these let me know and I can do it for you and send you the info. Good luck, Mary

You should be able to pin down the two Georges in the 1881 census with Geo snr a grocer. With a bit of luck they may still be together as a family in the 1891 census too. (My suspicion is that Geo jnr helps Geo snr in the shop). This does mean trawling through the images of loads of census, but hey you hadn't anything else to do had you?
Oh and widen your age range for George Jnr a bit, 25-29 at the time of marraige would be a good strat.

Rob

Ah, well you wouldn't necessarily be able to use the witnesses' names, and possibly not in this case, although sometimes they are reasonably obviously relatives.

And there's definitely no father's occupation listed on the birth certificate? Are there more precise addresses for the groom on the marriage certificate or father on the birth certicates?

Christine

Hi,

thanks for the prompt reply.

No unfortunately the groom's occupation isn't recorded. The groom's father is recorded as a grocer, but there is no location information.

I have the witnes names - Geoge Henry Askham and Alice Lunn?, but how would I use those to find a Woodhead?

I have a lot to learn about this game ;-)
