The information she gave was that Martha's death certificate said her mother was Bara Brightrall (who was born in Canada). She said she could be the mother of Alan F, who I don't have as a child of Miles and Phianna. She also stated that the 1850 census didn't have the children in order. Does order make a difference on a census? Every other tree I've seen has Martha as Phianna and Miles daughter. Thanks for your quick response to my first message!

I'd check with your source on specifics such as dates. I think that Miles married Phianna when he was 22 (17 Mar/24 Apr 1844) and they had 5 children and were married for 45 years. When did he have time for a second wife? I'd want confirmation/sources of that story.

In doing research on Miles and Phianna, I found a tree that had Bara Brightrall as Miles wife. When I contacted the person that created the tree, they said that Bara was his first wife and mother of two or three of his children. I had never read this in any of the many posts I have read. Has anyone else heard this or can confirm it? Does anyone know when Miles and Phianna got married?

Well, I would love to know what happened to my great grandmother, Nancy Barbara.....She was in Wichita with Mark on the 1900 census but in 1905 Mark married Ella Tucker and I can't find anything on Nancy Barbara. If she died, I can't find where she's buried. I was just hoping there might be a "Woodmansee" relative that might know something. And of course as I had mentioned before, I would also like to find what happened to Carrie, Nancy Barbara and Mark's daughter, my grandmother. My mother and father divorced when I was a baby so I am just now finding out stuff from my father's side of my family so I feel a little lost. I have no one to ask questions.
I would love to hear stories and/or "tid bits" about Mark, Miles, Phianna, etc. so that they aren't just names but people.
Thanks so much.

Thank you for your info. The census that spells the name "Tryron" is incorrect...it was really Pryor. After Pryor she married my grandfather, James W Woltz in Wichita, Ks (July 4, 1900), they had 3 children, James M (my father), Ruth, and Doretha or Dorothy; they divorced in 1912 and she moved to Arkansas with Dorthea and Raymond, where she remarried to a man named L.E. Prall, they divorced in 1926 and that's when I loose her. She would have been around 48 so I'm pretty sure she would have remarried unless sadly she died.
I will contact the person you mentioned re: Woodmansee genealogy.
Again, thanks for your help.
Suze

You are correct about Nancy being Mark's spouse. Her name was Nancy Barbara Helrigel Woodmansee. Mark and Nancy are my great grandparents. I loose Nancy in Wichita, Ks. I'm pretty sure she died but I can't find anything on her death or where she is buried. Mark remarried 2 more times. His 2nd wife died shortly after they married and he moved to Arkansas and married again. He died there and is buried there by his 3rd wife. I am looking for Mark and Nancy's child, Carrie. She is my grandmother and I loose her in Arkansas. If anyone has info on her, I would love to get in touch with you....I have been looking for her for years.
Thanks

They also had a son, Frank M. Woodmansee born about 1859. Frank was my Great Grandfather. I also have a daughter, Julia listed, born about 1850 and a son Albert born about 1864 according to the 1860 and 1870 census. In the 1880 census there is also a Nancy listed, but my guess that this is a spouse (my guess would be of Mark).

Intersting. I believe his daughter's name was Carrie Woodmansee Pryor (an error in the census). I believe his wife's name was Barbara. What book is it you speak of and where can I find it? Carrie Pryor married someone Pryor, had a ch ild named Raymond H. Pryor, then her husband died and she moved to KS with her parents Mark and Barbara Woodmansee. She eventually remarried a man named James William Woltz and went on to have several children with him. Then she filed for divorce and basically dissapeared. Any idea on this?

Mark is listed in the relatively new Woodmansee Genealogy. Mark's father was Anthony Miles Woodmansee, whose grandfather was buried a mile from where I grew up in Wayne County, Pa. The book has a picture of Anthony Miles, although it lists Carrie as having married someone named "Tryor".

She married someone named _______Pryor in Iowa about 1896 and had a son Raymond pryor born in June 1898 in Iowa. In 1900 she was listed on a KS Census as living with her parents, Mark and Barbara Woodmansee. I am Carrie's great great grandaughter.

I just received from Janet Parker just a few minutes ago. I don't intend to buy the book since I am more interested in ancestors than descendants. Last night I did find additional information on Abigail Horseman, wife of John Woodmansee. Her parents Sarah Wood(s) and Marmaduke Horseman emigrated in 1677 from Hull, Yorkshire on the ship "Martha", apparently Quakers who were escaping religious persecution. There were 4 Marmaduke Horsemans in the line. Here is Janet's reply to my email:

"Yes, with the research and cooperation of many people we published a 2-volume genealogy entitled, Descendants of Gabriel Woodmancy/Woodmansee of New London, Connecticut: Thirteen Generations from 1665. I recognize the name Unity Woodmansee Newell; she is in the book on p. 288, with her parents and 13 brothers and sisters. Her husband is listed, but we have no descendants for any of the Newell children of Robert and Unity (Woodmansee) Newell. Several people have sent me additional information and descendants on their lines, but I do not plan to do another edition or addendem myself. After spending more than 15 years on the Woodmansee Project, I am simply burned out -- and at nearly 76, I don't think I have the energy to take that on.

Yes, the book is for sale for $53.00 plus shipping and handling, for a total of $61.42. We have no credit card capability, so a check or money order made payable to Janet or Carlyle Parker is what we need to receive. Our address is 2115 N Denair Ave., Turlock, CA 95382. We would be happy to fill your order.
The lineage we have for Unity is John, John, Thomas, Gabriel. Each of these ancestors is written up in the book. We have received a lot of positive comments and compliments on the book. It turned out well."
As far as Robert Newell's Ancestors I have guessed that his parents could've been Hugh and Elizabeth Truax Newell, but will have to do more research to prove this point.
You may be right about Rozelier. She is listed as living with George and Margaret in Ohio in the 1850 US Census. However, this census does not include relationships, so she may have been a cousin. Census lists her as 8 yrs old in 1850. Upon looking at this census again, I find a John A. Van Gesen living close to them. getting interesting. So far I haven't found anyone with the name Rozelier listed as a child of any of the other Woodmansees I am looking at.

According to the newly minted Woodmansee Genealogy, George married Margaret M. Van Geison in Mar 1847. They moved eventually to Calhoun Co., Mich. where Margaret d. in 1872. George m. Priscilla Lamb second in 1873. The book lists three children of George and Margaret: Francis, Ralph and an infant who d. soon after birth. Rozelier is not listed. It would seem that something is odd since you list his birth in 1842; George was supposedly m. in 1847; and there is a large gap between the 1st and 2nd child.

Most of what you write is accurate and documented. Local histories in Wayne County, PA say that Gideon and his family came here ca. 1816 along with son-in-law Rufus Geer (m. Azuba Woodmansee). His obituary says that Amy died some six years before him. Although Thomas and Jeremiah came here, they didn't stay long. James (my ancestor) stayed. I have found no evidence that Amy Carter was an Indian and believe it's based on misreading an entry in an old record. There is a record of her birth to John Carter and Lydia Bowen in MA. Anyway, I think I can provide some answers. Contact me at aohara39@gmail.com.

While doing some research on family, I ran across an interesting news article from 1911. Although probably not related directly to me, I still want to find out something about it. Eugene C. Woodmansee of Illinois went to Indiana in 1867 to marry a Sarah Vert. Just before the wedding he vanished. forty-four years later, his bones were discovered in a trunk buried under an old road house. His mother and father came from Illinois for the wedding. His brother was J. H. Woodmansee and lived at Danville, Illinois. If anyone knows anything about this incident or the family, please let me know.

I am searching for any information I can find on Margaret M Woodmansee, born around 1820 in New York, who married George Gideon Woodmansee around 1840, probably in Orleans County, NY. I have found one source who believes her maiden name was Vangeison. There was a Vangeison family living in the Orleans County area around this time, but so far I have not been able to confirm this. If anyone knows anything about Margaret, please point out some sources that will start me off. Other information I know about her is: she lived in Fairfield, Ohio in 1850, then in Decatur, Michigan in 1860. She probably died around 1874 in Michigan. She had at least four children with George G. Woodmansee; Rozelier b. 1842, Frances E. b. 1850, Eugene b. 1851, and Rocky b. 1856. Also, If anyone knows anything about the children I would be glad to have that information also.

My Great, great, great, great, great grandfather was Gideon Woodmansee who lived in Dartmouth, Mass. served in the Revolutionary War, and eventually migrated to Lake Como, Pennsylvania. He married a girl from Swansea, Mass. named Amy Carter. My researches do not reveal an Indian connection, her father was apparently a John Carter who married a Lydia Bowen (although I have not been able to positively confirm this). My branch of the family continues through either Jeremiah or Thomas Woodmansee who moved to Orleans County, NY in early 1800s, then moved on to Michigan. The marriage of Gideon and Amy (also spelled Amie or Almy or Aimee depending on the record) is well documented as Oct. 7, 1781. They had 5 children between 1782 and 1793 while still living in Dartmouth. Apparently Gideon with one or more of his sons, moved to Pennsylvania around 1819. Amy supposedly died in 1842 in Pennsylvania, but I don't have confirmation of this yet. Gideon definitely died in 1851 and was buried in Jerusalem Cemetery in Wayne County, Pennsylvania.

John Woodmansee b1845, married Eliz. Ruch 1861

John Woodmansee is quite a mystery man. He was born abt. 1845 in either Mich or Ohio, even his daughters give conflicting information. He married Elizabeth Ruch 1861 and had son William 1862 who died in infancy. He and Eliz. had Cora Belle in 1864 and Margaret Caroline (Callie) in 1868. Cora married Leroy Bailey and settled in Gratiot County, Michigan. Margaret married Thomas Grant Cline and settled near Conneault, Ohio. Thomas G. Cline was born in West Virginia. John Woodmansee died at age 23 in 1868 probably either Ohio or Michigan. I am looking for John Woodmansee's father, mother and siblings. Thanks George g.bailey@comcast.net

In notes I am now seeing from an earlier contact on Mathewson/Matteson, I see a Freelove Mathewson born 17, June 1735. So here is the Freelove again that you are all talking about. This was found in the Cumberland Library. My Woodmansee were primarily, Hope Valley, Hopkinton. My Mathewson lines were over in Woonsocket & Cumberland & married the Andrews, Bartletts, Aldrich, Inman,Windsor, Barekr. If any of thsoe lines are in your families, then there has to be a connection to ours somewhere.

If you have a family member that is a member of the DAR, they can research Reuben. His grave marker is that of a "Patriot". He joined the revolution at age 14.

William was born about 1791; wife Sarah Capwell
Children: Reuben (1812) Henrietta (1815) Giles (1817)
George (1819) Christopher (1821) Clarissa (1824) Horace (1826) Amy (1828) William (1831) Edwin Cager (1831) (Sorry, I was thinking of Giles instead of Caleb)

Amos married Laura:
Children: Seymour, Angeline, Byron, William, Horace, Reuben, and Julia

Caleb married Muriel:
Children: William, Caleb, Hannah, Sarah, Nancy, James, John, Irvilla, Harrison and Harriet.

Clark married Nancy Howell:
Children: Luther, Henry, Ann, Elbert, Carolyn, Alice, Almira, George and Olive.
It seems a little more tha a coincidence that the Nichols, Woodmansees, and the Mattesons all came from the same general area around Coventry, Kent, RI. It seems logical that the Nichols, at least Reuben and his sons, William, Clark, Amos, and Caleb, knew the Woodmansees and the Mattesons. Perhaps it is a little more than a coincidence that Luther married Evalyn Woodmansee when their grandparents came from the same area in Rhode Island.

When Reuben and his younger three sons left Rhode Island, William stayed. It is his son Caleb that you find listed in all of the family search sites in Rhode Island and became a successful business man.
