Re: Woodrow Surname-Correction

I wanted to correct the Woodrow lineage of President Woodrow Wilson that I posted in 2009. Ongoing research has revealed the John Wodrow of Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland who married Jean Sclater on 12 January 1751 WAS NOT the son of Dr. John Wodrow and Sofia Douglas of Glasgow. Although this has been a long accepted lineage among descendants of President Wilson's family, they were mistaken. It turns out that the son of Dr. John and Sophia (Douglas) Wodrow who was thought to be John of Paisley was actually named James. Therefore the lineage I posted is incorrect in the first through the third generations. I apologize for the confusion. This just goes to show that it is always best to do research in primary sources, and not accept long believed published information that has been repeated many times over.

Hello Rachel,
I have just seen your post. My gggggrandfather was James Wodrow who married Florence Campbell 19 Dec 1799 in Bowmore, Islay. I haven't been able to find who James' parents were, but I am reasonably sure It wasn't Rev John Woodrow. James and Florence had 8 children, 3 of whom emigrated to Simcoe County, Canada. The other children all stayed on Islay. My mother came to Australia as a war bride.

Iain Heiser

Ariel Estella Schell Woodrow, was my mother.

Her grandmother went by Phebe, according to my great Aunt who was Phoebe Ann Woodrow's daughter, in a recent conversation.
I have a Alfred John Woodrow and a James Woodrow, emigrating from Askam in Furness, out of Liverpool April 17, 1908 arriving in New York, they headed out to Butte Montana to work in the mines. Alfred John was also a boxer/fighter. He may have killed someone in Butte and escaped to Canada to then return to England. Alfred's son Harry emigrated to Canada in 1923 or so, in the western part, left Canada and then settled down in Schenectady, New York in 1924.

While in Canda they had several children. I found him in Canada Census 1852 and his name was Mathias Woodrow. New York Census it was Mathew Woodrough and cemetery lists his as Matthew Woodroe.
Hi Denise

I am the granddaughter of a WOODROW from Norfolk, England and have so far traced the family back to the 1851 census when they lived in Diss, Norfolk, England. You may find out more about your WOODROW in the Norfolk records and also by joining the Norfolk email list on Rootsweb. There you can post the name and will hopefully receive replies from other WOODROW descendants. My grandmother married and consequently her surname became BROWN but my father, now deceased in action in WWII, had WOODROW as his middle name. I hope you can find out a lot of information on your WOODROWs.

Regards

Jan Marchant

I have just discovered this discussion. I would like to contact Bill Woodrow who posted the notice about the debate as to where the Wodrows/Woodrows originated from in distant history. The reference to R Burns also concides with a legend in my family, which is understood to be related to the Woodrow Wilson family (somehow or other which I have not yet been able to trace but there is an emerging pattern of legends that I have been able to corroborate). Most recently however - from at least the mid 19th century we originated in & around Paisley. My late father Alex was born there in 1918.

Hi Sue

Thanks for your contribution. By 1911 my WOODROW was a BROWN and my father and his sister had been born. The family was already living at the address in London where they were when my parents met in the 1930s. Have you been able to find earlier records for Doris? There were a lot of WOODROWs in Norfolk and other eastern counties and searching for earlier ones in Doris's family might find connections with mine and others.

Regards

Jan Marchant

I previously sent an email which is on this site and gives information about my WOODROW ancestors in Norfolk. To my knowledge there is no Hirst connection, but that could be another branch of the family. In my case, I'm the one who came to Australia. I don't have any info. on my WOODROWs earlier than the 1851 census. They were in various villages, then Horsford, then my direct ancestors left Norfolk for London in the 20th century. The earlier ones were millers and bakers and then a farmer with his own farm at Diss. Would love any earlier info. and possible connection.

I realise it's a few years since you posted your message but my Woodrows also came from Norfolk. They originally lived in villages in the Norwich area, Felthorpe and Scole cum Frenze, and then my grandmother, Florence Elizabeth Woodrow married Walter Charles Brown from Lowestoft, Suffolk and they lived in Goodmayes, Essex where my late father Harold Walter Woodrow Brown, was born in 1906. Later they lived in Horsford near Norwich where my late aunt was born in 1908. Then they moved to Islington, London where they had a carpet retail business until the 1960s. (I hope I have all my facts right here re their moves.)

I now live in Australia but I am doing research on my family history. There must have been a lot of Woodrows in Norfolk and later all over the UK and now the world. We are most likely related, and possibly also to Woodrow Wilson, but very distantly. There is a lady in England doing a Woodrow one-name study. My email address is jjmarchant@optusnet.com.au .

in 1740 the Rev John Woodrow of Paisley became minister at Kildalton on the Isle of Islay, the census records change the name from woodrow to wodrow and back depending I suppose on how good a speller they were = my husbands decended is obviously from a branch of the Rev Patrick Woodrow - this was very interesting and I would be glad of any other info you have
Rae Woodrow

I know it originally was spelt with one "o"I believe my great grandfathers first name was John, but have found nothing to confirm it.I do believe he was connected to Janet Jessie Woodrow per notes I have found through the years. I would like to find out if one of her uncles Thomas's brothers ended up in Ireland. Walt Woodrow

Re: Woodrow Surname

Your account of the Wodrow Family of Paisley and elsewhere in Scotland is intererting and useful. However, you are incorrect about how Woodrow Wilson was connected to the family. President Thomas Woodrow Wilson (1856-1923) was the son of the Rev. Joseph Ruggles Wilson and Janet E. Woodrow (1826-1888). His mother immigrated to the U.S. with her family in 1836 when she was 9 years of age. Her father was the Rev. Thomas Woodrow (1793-1877), who was the pastor of the Independent Church in Carlisle, England. He had been born in Paisley, Scotland on 15 March 1793, the son of John Wodrow and Jane Morton. The Rev. Thomas Woodrow intentionally changed the spelling of his last name, because when he moved to England, and subsequently to the United States, he decided it was best to preserve the pronunciation of his surname, so added an "o" in order to do so.
The lineage of President Wilson's direct line, so far as I have been able to determine, is as follows:
1. Robert Wodrow, d. 1672. Married Agnes Dunlop, d. 1653.
2. James Wodrow (1637-1707). Married Janet Luke, d. 1733.
3. John Wodrow (b. 1695). Married Sofia Douglas.
4. John Wodrow, married Jean Sclater 12 Jan. 1751, Paisley.
5. John Wodrow (1765-1837), of Paisley. Married Janet Morton 27 Sept. 1787 in Paisley.
6. Rev. Thomas Woodrow,b. Paisley 15 March 1793. d. Columbus, Ohio 25 April 1877. Married 8 March 1820, Gorbals, Glasgow, Scotland to Marion Williamson (1791-1836).
7. Janet E. Woodrow (1826-1888) married 1849 in Chillicothe, OhioRev. Joseph Ruggles Wilson (1822-1903).
8. Thomas Woodrow Wilson (1856-1923), President of the United States.

Erick Montgomery
