My father was Mary Barry-Wall's sister, so Graham Wootton is my uncle and I was named after Mary. So far I have found his surname spelt 3 ways - Wooton, Wootton and Wotton.

My brother and I stayed at Mary's house at 33 Horringer Rd in Bury St Edmunds, after her death in 1998. She often used to mention that she worked very hard typing his manuscripts for publication.

We met his Godson at her funeral, and he said he and Graham were very close, but sadly I can't remember his name.

I am keen to find out more about him, so would be delighted to swap information about that branch of my family.

Jennifer Mary Barry Wall, Gatehouse of Fleet, Scotland

Hi, I have been reseaching his wife's (Coller) line. She would be my great grandfathers 1st cousin. I believe they emigrated to Indiana becouse Mary Ann's brother Charles had already emigrated their 20 years prior (1867).

I don't really know anything about Edward's parents but i have Edward listed on my tree as a Silver Smith (or Guilder).

I found on the Indiana state records that Edward was naturalized on the 11/03/1888 in Floyd County.

I have these children listed on my tree for both of them:

Agnes Alice Wootton.
William Wootton.
Grace F Wootton.
Fanny Wootton.
Frederick Priest Wootton.
(all born in Birmingham, William and Fanny are named after Mary Ann's parents).

Agnes married a "B R H Kohl" on 04/09/1900, New Albany City, Floyd, Indiana. (according to the indiana marriages book here on ancestry).

William, I think married someone by the name of Nora and had 3 sons (Ralph, Arthur and Elton). I found this on a census that lists William as born in England, It could be wrong but his age also matches.

Grace is listed in the 1900 census as married in 1899, New Albany City, Floyd, Indiana. But the census still shows her surname as Wootton which is slightly confusing.

Fanny married Martin Herter in 09/04/1900, New Albany City, Floyd, Indiana. She died on the 07/1969, New Albany, Floyd, Indiana, USA. (SSN: 307-48-4028). I think they had a daughter called Catherine E Herter (Born: 1903) who married a Raymond C. West.

Frederick married Clara Howdon in 14/08/1909, New Albany City, Floyd, Indiana. I think he died in 1919, Jefferson, Kentucky, USA.

So far this is all i have been able to find. I did manage to trace Mary Ann's eldest brother's line in Indiana and have contacted and spoken to them. My goal is to now do the same for Edward's descendents in Indiana.

Hello Chrystine. So that's why Edward disappears from view!! Yes, he was my great-great uncle and I have been searching for AGEs for what happened to his family.

How many children went with them? Do you know what happened to Agnes Alice and Edith. And did the boys survive the Great War? I desperately want to find some living Woottons. I have so many questions.

How are you related to Edward and perhaps to me? His birth certificate gives his date of birth as 19 June 1845, near Nonsuch in Northfield. (I have a map ((courtesy of Bartley Green District Historical Society)} showing his father Thomas's fields and Nonsuch Farm.)You may know his mother was Sarah nee Ingram and that he was one of 14 children and was a Carver and Gilder.

I am more than happy to share information . Thank you so much for giving me these gems! Kind Regards, Thelma nee Wootton

I'm looking for info on William Wootton (born about 1843) who owned a harness manufacturing business on Freer St.in Walsall in the late 19th. c. He was the son of John Wootton, who was a miner. William's wife, Annie (Greenway), and son, William Greenway Wootton, carried on the business for a while after William's death.

Their son, my grandfather, was born in 1884. Can you confirm any relation to the "Uncle Dick" Woottons?

Hi again (by the way of a postscript)

I have just been assimilating the info you forwarded into my own files. I have never been able to find William Wootton on the census returns for 1871, which has always led to believe he emgrated prior to this, but you think not, very interesting I'll have to have another look at this. It has been a year or so since I looked in earnest at the Wootton side of my heritage, and I think you have given me the impetus for a fresh look.

It did occur to me that you are reaching half way round the world (if you live in Oz) to find your roots, and yet mine are literally (almost) a stones throw away. I have family from my mothers side who are buried in Ryecroft cememtery, admittedly I havent done that side of the family yet. But still quite a coincidence.

I have already told you that my grandmother remembers vividly that she was supposed to emigrate to Australia in the late 1920s with her parents and siblings. Unfortunatley her father William Harvey (Carolines youngest son) died in 1930 and they never went, he had been ill for some time prior to this.

It seems quite surreal in some ways that on the one hand we are talking about people who lived in the 1800's, and yet on the other it is still within living memory that "Hey we were supposed to emigrate to go and be with some of my fathers family when I was a girl".

Another coincidence that both William Harvey and William Wootton died the same year.

I also meant to include my email address in my previous post.

Kevinpargeter06@aol.com

regards

Kev

Hi Denise,

Good to hear from you.

Your email does tie in extremely well with the details in one of the letters especially concerning William Woottons children. I know from past experience that Ancestry will not let me forward photographs and images etc via the site. So if you let me have an email address I'll forward them directly to you. (or postal address if you prefer). They may be quite a large file as I scanned them at quite a high resolution, they also do take a little effort to read so I'll include my best guess interpretation.

I have just been re-reading the letters William sent to his sister Caroline, and in his last letter he mentions sending a photo of himself and his 2nd wife in his next letter. I dont unfortunately have that next letter, but my Aunt Win (Williams gt granddaughter, who incidentally has been looking after the original letters for the past 40 years) has loaned me a very old cabinet photo which would certainly seem to be from that period.

As is usually the case there is no writing on the back to say whom it is a photo of, nor unfortunately is there anything on it to say where the studio which produced it is located. I'll forward that to you as well, as a curiosity.

I have also been in contact with one of Mary Ann Woottons descendants, and she also has a photo with a similar problem, although she has narrowed the field to two people, one of whom is Mary Ann. I'll pass this on to you with a (hopefully) better explanation.

It could very well be the case that we have access to photos of two of the siblings, but not the one from whom I am descended. How annoying!! If you have any photos from that period I would love to see them, and I know my own grandmother would. She has been most intrigued by my research as well as being a veritable fount of knowledge, and being almost 90 years old is one of a very few people who can still fill in some of the blanks. I really should have started all this 15 years ago when there were more people to ask.

My Gt grandfather William Harvey (Caroline's son) was also a coal miner and indeed served in the Royal Engineers as a Tunneller in WW1. As something of a coincidence I myself worked as an underground electrician for British Coal for ten years.

I grew up in Cannock which is about 6 miles from Walsall and today live in Rugby which is about 40 or so miles further away. At least some of Mary Annes descendants still live very close by in Wolverhampton. It would seem that yours was the only branch which moved very far at all.

I did visit Newcastle in Australia in 1995, along with Sidney and Cairns, though I had no idea I had (distant) family out there.

Forgive me if I have repeated something which I have already told you, but I can never remember what I information I have passed on to which person.

Look forward to hearing from you in due course.

Kev

William, or Billy, was my uncle. His grandmother, my great-grandmother was Maria Luz de Lujan. She was the last wife of Unlce Dick Wootton. He was 54 years old when they married. She was 16. My mother, Mary Pauline, was Billy's sister and said she remembers Uncle Dick's wife when she lived in Mora, New Mexico. This was years after Uncle Dick passed away.

The English pronunciation is spelled Wootton but is phonetically "Wooten" as in wood. In fact many in my family simply started spelling it that way as the default and most common error....until computers got literal and folks wanted to match birth records with driver licenses.

But I gave up correcting pronunciation in the 5th grade.

Re: William Wootton

Hello Kev,

It sounds as if we are related. William Wootton is my Gt. Gt. Grandfather. I have been researching quite a few years, with only records from Australia, & English Census records & BMD & Parish Registers to search.
Here's what I have been able to piece together :

William Wootton & his wife Sarah Cooper & their children
Elizabeth B.1864 Henry B.1856 William B.1868
Hannah B.1869 Harriet B.1871 Eliza B.1873
migrated to Australia in about 1874.
They lived in the suburbs of Charlestown & Adamstown, near Newcastle, New South Wales,
then along came :
Edward B.1877 Mary Ann B.1880 Sarah Ann b.1882
and Caroline B. 1888.

There are a lot of coal mines in this area, & William was a coal miner. His daughter Eliza is my Great Grandmother.

I have a copy of William's birth cert.
He was born 12 Feb 1840 at Ryecroft, Staff.
father: Richard Wootton mother: Hannah Bagott

He married Sarah Cooper 18 March 1861 at Walsall.
Sarah's father is Robert Cooper & her mother is Elizabeth Oakley. She was born 22 Sept 1844 Chapel St. West Bromwich
and she does have a brother William born in 1841.
Sarah died 16 June 1904 at Charlestown.
William then married Louisa Clifford in abouot 1908.
William died 30 April 1930 at Charlestown age 89 years.

Yes his branch of the family stayed in Australia.

What I have been able to piece together about Richard Wootton is that he married Susannah Bagot on 18 Sept 1837 at Walsall--both were living in Ryecroft Street. His father's name was also Richard, & her father's name was Thomas Bagot(from marriage cert). On census records she was not born in Staffordshire, but Richard was.

I think these are their children, but Susannah apparently called herself different names on the christening records, or whoever recorded it might have not heard it properly, for:
Charles she is Hannah. on 1841 census born 1836-can't find him on any other census.

Harriet christened 3 Dec 1837 St Matthews Walsall she is Susanna
.
William Christened 8 Mar 1840 St Matthews Walsall she is Hannah (on 1851 census their is a William as an errand boy)

Mary Ann born 1842 Walsall (in Walsall Union Workhouse age 9 on 1851 census)

Caroline christened 11 Feb 1844 in Walsall, mother Anna.(In Walsall Union Workhouse age 6 on 1851 census)

As I could not find Richard & Susannah on any other census records from 1851 onwards, Presumed they had both died. There is a death record for the Dec Qtr 1848 Walsall Reg Dist. for Richard Wootton & Sept Qtr 1847 Walsall Reg Dist for Susannah Wootton, which fits in with what you write.

If the above information, or children is not correct, you might let me know.

I often thought about those two little girls in the workhouse, their parents dead, it must have been heartbreaking for them. From what I've read about workhouses they were harsh & cruel places to be in.

I would love to have copies of the letters that he wrote, it would give me some kind of feel for him that you can't have when you research, you only have facts & figures, not the real person.

Hoping to hear from you soon
Denise Ireland

Hi Direland39,

I am very sorry it has taken such an inordinately long time to reply to your post, I didn't realise you had added to the original post, I must have deleted the notification email by mistake without realising what it was.

However that being said and out of the way, allow me to respond to your request.

My William Wootton was my Gt Gt Grandmothers brother. He was born in 1840 and as far as I can tell his parents were Richard and Hannah Baggott. So we would seem to agree at least that far which is encouraging. I hadnt thought that Hannah could be short for Susannah, but you make a good point.

Both William and Hannah died in 1847 and 1848 respectively, leaving William living with James and Elizabeth Moor, while his two sisters ended up in Walsall Workhouse.

I know from talking to my grandmother and her sister that they were supposed to emigrate to Australia in the mid to late 1920s and that they would be joining some of their fathers family (he was Caroline Woottons youngest son, their father that is). This never happened as my Gt Grandfathers health was poor and he died before the family could travel.

I have in my possession three letters dated 1911-1912 in which William, writing to Caroline from Australia, states that his wife died in approx 1904 and that he had remarried. He tells Caroline that he wrote to his wifes brother to tell him that his sister had died. William gives the brothers name as William Cooper, so I would assume that he married Sarah Cooper, certainly he gave his wifes name as Sarah.

William gives his address as Charlestown, Near Newcastle, NSW, and at the time of writing the letters he must have been about 72.

If any of this ties in with what you know I would love to hear from you, I had assumed that he died in Australia and that his branch of the family had stayed in Australia.

Kev

Hi MayBe11e,

The surname Wootton (and its varients Wootten, Wooton, Wotton, Wotten and even Walton) derive from the old English word "wadu-tun", and literally meant the dweller in, or by the wood or forest. The name and its varients are also frequently found as place names in England. One of the earliest recordings of the name is Wagen de Wotton in 1048.

Regards,
Chris French

Hi,

My Wootton ancestors moved to Islington and the East End of London from Bloxwich in Staffordshire during the Industrial Revolution. My mum's family, being from the East End, also do not pronounce the 't' (Woo'on). This T-glottalization is common to this area in the Cockney accent and Estuary English accent of the south east. I'm curious as to how it is pronounced in Staffordshire?

Regards,
Chris

Re: How do you pronounce Wootton?

Our family has lived in the Shoreditch / Hoxton / Islington area of London since the early 1800´s when my great great grandfather came down from Coventry. My Dad always pronunced our surname as in ´wooden´ but also using the glottal stop on the ´t´sound, that is, not really pronuncing the ´t´ sound at all.
Hope this adds a bit more interest to the idea of how many ways to pronounce Wootton.

Tina Wootton
Spain.

Wootton's from Nottingham

I was wondering if anyone has any information on the family of Richard Wootton (1826-1880) born in Plumtree, Nottinghamshire. I'm specifically looking for information in his children, his siblings and parents.

If it helps, he was the husband on Hannah B. Blood (1826-1914) who was born in Ruddington, Nottinghamshire. Their children were Elizabeth (1845), Mary (1848), Sarah (1849), Jane (1852), John (1854), Thomas (1857-1929), Martha Ann (1860), Leonard (1862) and Albert (1870-1960).

I am the descendant of Richard through Albert (who was my great-grandfather). His son Albert (1898-1984) was my grandfather and his youngest son, Arthur (1944) is my father.

Any information would be greatly appreciated. I can be reached directly at ryan.wootton@gmail.com

Thanks!
Ryan Wootton

My Sister, who was married to a Wootton just died. Her husband, Rev. Patrick Wootton, will be able to inform me of family members. I do believe Al and Virginia Horn lived in Logan County, AR. Will speak to Pat and get more information for you.

Are any of these Horn names familiar: Albert & Virginia Horn (her grandmother was a Wootton) (d.1963, 1930) or Joseph, Alice (m. D. McSwain), Helen, Eliza, John, Marie Agnes?
