Re: Worbey/worby Hitchin - Henry and Emily

Hi Lisa,

I had found the Henry Arthur Worbey who was on the training ship in 1881, but wasn't sure if he was the right one. I have Ernest Worbey's marriage certificate and he has no relations included. I know Henry was 21 when he married Emily in 1891, which suggests a date of birth around 1870. However when he appears in the 1911 census his age is 45 suggesting a birth date of around 1866 so i was a bit confused. Do you have any documents that link Harrold to this Henry? And do you have Henry's birth certificate to go back further? And do you know anything of his naval career? I wondered if he was sent to the ship because he had no family?

One additional odd thing I found that i can't currently explain is that in the 1901 census Emily is listed with her children and a John Worbey? He is noted as head of the family and married, but i don't know who this is?

Any more information you have would be fantastic. My direct e-mail is lorraineawood@ntlbusiness.com

Thanks

Lorraine

Hi there,
I've been researching the Worbey family from Hitchin for a friend - Henry Worbey was in the navy so I think thats why he doesn't appear in all the censuses. In 1881 (when he was 12) he was living on the Mount Edgecombe Training Ship in Saltash, Cornwall. Will let you know if I come across anything further. The side of the family I am researching is Harold's (known as Harry).

Worbey/worby Hitchin - Henry and Emily

My husband's family are Worbey's from Hitchin.
Emily born 1872 was formerly a Wilshere. She married a Henry Worby and had children Harrold, Walter, James, Violet, Ernest (who is my husband's grandfather) , Percy and Dolly. However, I am having trouble tracking down Henry Worbey in the census (I have only found him in 1911) and so have had difficulty going any further back.

Any help would be most appreciated.

Hi Suzy,
I`ve just started researching my Worbey/Warbey tree
again after a break and came across your Ancestry.com
message.

My Worbey connections, unfortunately finished with my
Great Grandmother Ellen Worbey (b. 1874 in Hitchin,
daughter of Alfred Worbey). She married Albert Crawley
in Hitchin in 1890 so it was the Crawley line from
then on.
Alfred Worbey, Ellen`s Father, was one of 7 children born to Charles Worbey and Elizabeth French.
Charles Worbey (b.1810) was the son of George Worbey and Charlotte Primet who married in Great Wymondley in 1807. Other children of George and Charlotte were: John, James, frederick, Thomas (married Elizabeth ?) George, Joseph and William. I don`t know of any daughters.
All the history I have about the Worbey Family
centres around Hitchin mainly although Walsworth and
Great Wymondley have connections as well.
If you think there`s a connection I can send you some
more about my Worbey line.

Kind regards,

Stewart Crawley
Falmouth,
Cornwall

Transcribing for FreeCen.com

Hello Peter - I think I may have had some correspondence from you some time ago, when I was first setting out on my family tree. And I haven't got much farther on the Worby side than I had then, having been concentrating on my Mother's side of late.
As regards the Worby clan, I've only got as far as my Great Grandfather Albert Cornelius Worby, who married Emily Fanning in 1909..... having trouble positively IDing Albert on the 1901 census due to a lack of recorded middle names, but I *think* he is the one living at 19 Princess Court, Bethnal Green, aged 10 (son of Henry Worby, 40, Widower). I have a strong suspicion this family were related to the ones living at 1 Princess Court. Altogether I've found evidence of 9 Worby familys living in East London during the census, most of them within a few streets of eachother in Bethnal Green.... although I can't currently can't prove it, I suspect they may all have been related (assuming that "Worby" was as unusual a name then as it is now).
Basically my current task is an attempt to positively prove which of these Worbys are 'mine' - but I keep coming up against brick walls!

Hello - I'm Emma Worby and funnily enough I'm trying to trace my family tree. My Grandfather, Harold Worby, originated from Bow early 1900s - his brothers were named Sidney, Alfred, Bertram and Stanley - their mother's name was Emily.
Harold married Edith Smith and ended up living in Barnet, Herts - they had 3 sons.
If any of these ring a bell with anyone, please email me - icedgem99@hotmail.com
Thanks.
