Hi there,

Thanks for your question about Robert and Thomasine - all perfectly understandable in the context of my earlier post - 10 years isn't too long in genealogy ! As you'll have seen from my website, I do have Thomasine's ancestral connections into the broader Wren tree, although I'd imagine that these are of less direct interest to you. For what it's worth, here's what I have on Robert and Thomasine themselves :

1. ROBERT1 BATES was born Bet. 1730 - 1731. He married (1) ISABELLA HOPPER Bef. 1771 in Wolsingham DUR. She died Bef. 1771. He married (2) THOMASINE WREN 7 July 1771 in Wolsingham DUR, daughter of THOMAS WREN and MARY OLIVER. She was born 1742.

More About ROBERT BATES:
Occupation: 7 July 1771, Gentleman, widower, aged 40, of Wolsingham DUR

More About THOMASINE WREN:
Baptism: 18 August 1742, Wolsingham DUR
Note: 10 July 1771, Recorded as 'now wife of Mr Robert Bates of Wolsingham, late of Fawleeses'
Residence 1: 7 July 1771, Aged 28, of Wolsingham DUR
Residence 2: 10 July 1771, Wolsingham DUR

More About ROBERT BATES and THOMASINE WREN:
Marriage licence: 7 July 1771, Bond granted at Durham

This largely comes from Robert an Thomasine's marriage licence and the baptism entry for their son George Wren, born out of wedlock but baptised after their marriage.

Please contact me direct (ian@bedfordpark.net) if you have any further questions.

Best wishes,

Ian

I'm so sorry to see these posts as I think we are all just trying to find more information about our ancestors. There are no "stupid" questions when you are working to gain knowledge. I'm certainly not an expert in researching and hope there is enough tolerance out there to be helpful and not hurtful. Keep up the GOOD work and, please, don't be put off by insensitive comments. Good luck with your search!!!

I am on ancestry and replied to ian, as i said ' Hi Ian', Ian's post had a link to a website. On this it had all about thomasine and robert. All I wanted to know is if Ian had any more information, not someone telling me the rights and wrongs of posting on here. Please and this is a kind word choose your words more carefully as it can easily offend. It made me look as if I was thick and did come across condescending. Not something that I like. I would like this, to be the end of this now. Im sorry if this has offended you, and I would rather not get into arguments over something so silly. I hope you have a nice weekend, and leave all of this and move on :)

What 'website'?

Do you mean the posts above yours on the Rootsweb message board? On the thread that was started in 2001?

If so, please remember that the posts here are mirrored to the Rootsweb mailing list - the chance of anyone having kept these for over ten years is slim to non-existent.

It's always wise to include as many details as possible on any post - or at least to quote the one you're replying to.

Trying to find further connections for my family. My Grandfather, Doyle T. Wren, b. 1931 in Pine Bluff, AK. My Grandmother, Patsy Elizabeth Short b. 1936 in Denton, TX, told me that his father was Danie T. Wren b. 1908 in Howard, AK, who married Alice Gladys Worley b. 1909 in Atlanta, GA. I was able to find that Danie's father was Joseph Herbert Wren b. 1882 in Dierks, AK, but now I'm stuck. I'm trying to take my Wren line further back. Any information anyone can provide would be appreciated.

Thank You in advance.

I am a Wren descendant. I have names, birth dates, and more about five sons of "Billy" and Susan Ritz Wren born between 1892 and 1910. Will share if you don't already have them from the 1910 census of Paola. Billy's mother was Maria Tway, not Elizabeth Bishop. Daniel Bishop Wren's parents were James Harvey Wren (1807-1877) and Lilly Ann Pearce. James was son of Daniel Wren (1776-1847) and Elizabeth Bishop (1774-1753).

I doubt there's any Wren family that doesn't have this story.

There are no extant descendants of Sir Christopher Wren.
See here:
http://www.bedfordpark.net/genealogy/wren/sir_christopher.ht...

And here: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~billburgoy...

Not doubting that your grandfather believed what he said - but so did mine...

Genealogy must be based on facts from primary sources; proper research is the only way to find your own ancestors; there's little point when one wrong turn, due to rumour and family myths, 'connects' you to another family entirely.

According to a family tree my late Granfather made my family are related to Sir Christopher Wren distantley. My Grandfather was a very presise man who would never dream of streching truths when it came to things like this so I believe his research (which is now lost) to be true. According to his family tree we are related through a daughter or other close family member of his who married into the Mcdonald family. Does anyone have any information on this connection?
According to a family tree my late Granfather made my family are related to Sir Christopher Wren distantley. My Grandfather was a very presise man who would never dream of streching truths when it came to things like this so I believe his research (which is now lost) to be true. According to his family tree we are related through a daughter or other close family member of his who married into the Mcdonald family. Does anyone have any information on this connection?

Craig, Clk
------------
This article was published in the Wren Kin Newsletter April 1990, Vol. 1, Issue No. 2. and is reprinted here with the permission of author Ruth Wren.

According to census records, William R. Wren was born in Virginia between 1770 and 1780. We can place him in South Carolina in 1810 and 1815 for his daughter, Amelia Ann, and his son Marshall were alleged to have been born in South Carolina. We know he was in Dallas County Alabama by 1820.

I believe the other male and female enumerated in this census as over 21 years of age is his son, William, and wife, Jane — but I have no proof. He is not referred to in the will of William R. Wren but a William Wren is mentioned in Dallas County court records. This William Wren married the widow, Jane (Wardlow) Ramsey, sister of James Wardlow, in 1817 in Abbeville District, South Carolina. They emigrated to Dallas County, Alabama in 1819. According to court records, this William Wren remained in Dallas County, Alabama until 1827. (No other information).

In his will, William R. Wren referred to his wife, Sarah, who was born between 1690 and 1800. William’s daughter, Elizabeth, was born between 1790 and 800.

William R. Wren is enumerated in the 1820 printed census of Dallas County, Alabama; pg. 395:
2 males over 21
2 males under 21
2 females over 21
2 females under 21

William R. Wren is still found in Dallas County Alabama in 1830; pg 84;
Male - age 50-60 (William R.) born 1770-1780
Male - age 15-20 (Marshall) - born ca 1815
Male - age <-5 (Richard H.) - born ca 1828
Female age 30-40 (Sarah) - born 1790-1800

18 slaves are also enumerated: 10 male; 8 female

William R.
My grandmother was Mary Alice Wren who was born somewhere near Brownwood, Texas on June 8, 1876 and died in Cleburne, Texas on Januray 14, 1953. She was married to Jerry Logan Hazelwood and lived most of her adult life in Cleburne. She is buried in the Cleburne cemetary. I have never heard of Nicholas Clem Wren but there must be a very close family connection. I do not think I have any information about Mary Alice's brothers or sisters, but will start digging.

My grand mother was Mary Alice Wren. The information I has is that she was born June 8, 1876 in or near Brownwood, Texas. She was married to Jerry Logan Hazelwood and died in Cleburne, Texas on January 14, 1953 in Cleburne, Texas where she is buried. Mary Alice had five children, Emma, Thelma, Elma, Clarence, and Forrest (my father). There was a daughter Viola, who I understood was a half-sister to the others, but never knew the story. I have only sketchy information for prior generations, but do have the name Viola Patterson Wren as the mother of Mary Alice. I have the name James Wren as her father. I have the name W. J. Patterson as Viola Patterson's father and a last name of Connally for Viola Patterson's father.

There were two WRENs who immigrated to Virginia around the mid-1600s. No connection has been found between them, and to my knowledge, neither has been traced back to England. U.S. WREN[N]s who don't descend from one of these two tend to be Irish, typically arriving here in the 19th century or later.

Might you know a male named WREN[N] who'd be willing to have his DNA tested?

Mary Richardson
mrichson@ix.netcom.com

Tryhene sic or Tryphena Wren died Feb 1911, Clermont, Lake, FL

from 28 Feb 1911 Tuesday (Jacksonville FL) Times Union:
Clermont, Feb 27.- The saddest chronicle of the year is the death of Miss Tryhene Wren, the 2nd daughter of Mr Thomas B Wren. She was just entering young womanhood, and her kind and gentle disposition endeared her to all. She was a victim of that mysterious and fatal malady pellagra, which has baffled medical science so far as to its cause, nor has a treatment been found to stay its fatal course. She leaves a father and two sisters, Vera and Bernice to mourn her departure.
(Looks like her father was Thomas B, b in Ireland in 1864, and mother was Rosa b in England in 1858. Looks like Tryphena was b in July of 1892 or 1893.
