Hi there Steve,

Thanks for answering back so quickly! This is very exciting, as I have been struggling with Charlotte, whose antecedents and place of origin have not been clear. All I had to go on was the fmily comment that she was definately Charlotte and that she came from Warwickshire. The dates and information you have given me ties in very well with what I have so far discovered. My GGG Grandfather is described as Alexander Muirhead from Scotland. Charlotte & Alexander had three children, as mentioned, and the Riton in the youngest son's name (John Riton)made me think she could have been a Charlotte Rigton. I cannot so far find any marriage record, although they are mentioned variously in Censuses from 1941. The dates of the children's arrival tie in beautifully, being 1841 (Stepney) 1843 and 1846, also London. Wonder if we are ever so distantly related?! There do not seem to be complete records of DMDs for Warwickshire, or maybe (dread thought!) perhaps they never married?! I think my GGGGrandfather may have been a dissenting Scot who refused to avail himself of 'benefit of marriage' owing to the fact that only Church of England clerics were authorised to perform legal marriages at the time in question. He was a Customs Officer in London, and his two sons eventually ended up in India. Will plod on with the maze, and let you know if I'm able to discover further details. If you should come upon any marriage of the Charlotte in your family please let me know. Many thanks for your trouble. Best regards!

Hi Jean,

so far I've traced my Wrightons back to Middleton Cheney. This is near Banbury - which is on the Northamptonshire / Oxfordshire / Warwickshire boundary. From what I've found William Wrighton (born 1787 Sulgrave) married Sarah Trentham in Middleton Cheney 10th Oct 1806. They did have a daughter called Charlotte (bapt 1819) and I think married in 1840. Her brothers William and Thomas moved north to Watford (Northampton). My GGF was William Jnrs youngest son who moved to Liverpool abt 1890 where he married. Most of his children moved with him to South London in the 1920s. My GF remained in Liverpool.

Steve

I am very interested in a Warwickshire connection for Wrighton/Righton or even Riton!!. My GGG Grandmother was I think a Charlotte Riton, born in London in about 1810. She married my GGG Grandfather and had three children. Alexander Muirhead, John RITON Muirhead and a daughter Ann.
Alexander and John RITON Muirhead emegrated to India in the 1870s. However, family legend has it that my GGGG married a Charlotte (proved by family bible)from Warwickshire, and owing to the RITON included in the second son's name, believe she may have been a RIGHTON (Spelling!!)

From the Mobile, Alabama Newspaper

Monday, July 12, 1909

"Mr. Thomas G. Wrighton and wife, of Pensacola, are in the city. They are stopping at the residence of Mr. Wrighton's sister, Mrs. Joseph Burch , corner of Davis Avenue and Owen Street. Tom, as he is familiarly known by his many friends in this city and Pensacola, is a Mobile boy, having been born and raised to manhood in the Gulf City. He says that although Pensacola is a good town, there is no place like Mobile. He is an ardent baseball fan and witnessed with great delight Mobile win the double-header last Saturday. Mr. Wrighton is a member of many fraternal organizations, in some of which he holds exalted positions. He will remain several days, renewing old friendships."

Not my line, just sharing.

Thanks. I've got a few more twist on your info.

William jnr appears to have followed his brother Thomas to Watford as Thomas is in Watford on 1841&51 census. I found William jnr in 1841 census in Morton Pinkney.

My line of the Wrighton name has died out. William jnr had 9 children in Watford. My GGF Albert William was youngest - his mother died after birth. AW moved to Liverpool (on the barges) where he married and had 6 children. Of the 3 boys only my GF had children - 3 girls.

AW and family (except my GF) moved to Croydon in the 1920s (they're all buried in Mitcham cemetery). They moved because my Great Uncle (Albert)relocated with the company he worked for Iron Mongers called Gascoigne!

Thats really helpful thankyou so much. I did think William was born in Sulgrave because he gave it as his place of birth on 2 census. But it does seem you are correct with warwick. I have mainly been researching the family of Mary Wrighton born 1812 Wiliiam and Sarahs eldest child. But there does seem to be a further 2 connections between this family and the Wrightons. Mary Wrighton married Thomas Gascoigne b 1808 (son of William and Mary Gascoigne) in 1833 at Helmdon. Their children were Sarah b 1834 d 1845 Mary Ann b1836 d 1838 John b1838 married Sarah = 10 children d 1881 Eliza b 1841 Thomas b 1844 married Mary Ann Wrighton b 1849 watford northants daughter of Thomas Wrighton and Mary Amos ( Thomas being William and Sarahs son) Thomas gascoigne and Mary Ann Wrighton moved to lambeth and had 5 children he d 1902. William b 1845 James b1847 married Emma Knight = 6 children (2nd eldest son Luke John Gascoigne my grandad) James d1891 Ann b 1850 d 1863 Elizabeth b 1853 was visiting her Grandfather William Wrighton on 1861 census. Later on 1891 census Mary Gascoigne nee Wrighton b 1812 is a widow and her daughter Elizabeth is also a widow and her name is Wrighton but I cannot find her husbands name she has a child Edith M T Wrighton b 1885 Kentish town 1901 Elizabeth d 1915 and her mother died 1892 she had been a widow since 1855 and had taken in lodgers and worked as live in servant for a James Marriott at 8 denmark road st. giles northants. Thomas Gascoigne and all of his sons were blacksmiths and their familey home was moreton pinkney hope this is interesting to you. Linda.

Your welcome, I spotted your note by chance as I haven't done much on the Wrightons for a number of years. Yes please, would be interested in your Wrighton details.

I've just spotted an earlier response suggesting William was from Sulgrave.

William and Sarahs marriage record (Middleton Cheney Oct 10th 1808) shows William was from Warmington(Warw)- which is about 7m NW of MC. He signs as Righton, witnessed by his brother Abraham (Righton). Copy of scan attached.

There is an IGI Bapt record for a William (10 Jul 1787), Banbury with F=William and M=Fanny. Also a Marr record 1786 William Wrighton & Fanny Wiggins at Chipping Norton(Oxon) - 10m SW of Banbury.

Sarahs parents were John and Sarah (Bapt Apr 11 1784 @ MC) - copy of scan attached.

I've found records that suggest Sarah had a brother Thomas on 1841 & 51 Census living in Thenford abt 1m E of MC.

Linda,

As far as I can determine there was only one Wrighton family living in Middleton Cheney in the early 19th century and that was the family of William and Sarah. William was born in Sulgrave (incorrect transcription in 1851 census) and Sarah was born in Middleton Cheney.

I have done a good deal of research and of all the counties in England, the county of Northamptonshire has been very least transcribed by the Mormon Church. Many parishes within refused to allow their registers to be released to this church. Very fraustrating.

You might like to contact the priest at Middleton Cheney or someone involved in the history of the parish for help. Also you could email the Northamptonshire County Record Office where they will hold the parish records for every parish within the county (on microfiche).

I have the 1841 and 1851 censuses for William and Sarah so if you would like a copy email me at
john-bradbury@talktalk.net

John
PS Who did Mary Wrighton b. 1812 marry?
PPS You ARE in luck! After a search, I have just found a file "The Wrightons of Middleton Cheney" I did some research several years ago and had forgotten all about it. I will send it to you in narrative form and, if you wish, in gedcom format
Linda, William Wrighton was born at Sulgrave, Northamptonshire in 1784 - you will find an excellent website for the village at www.sulgrave.org

Regards
John Bradbury
PS.
Sophia Wrighton Jackson

I'm searching for more information about a Sophia Wrighton otherwise Jackson who was my great great great grandmother. I have only three definite pieces of information about her. She married a William Williams, a printer, at Llanbeblig Church in Caernarfon, North Wales on 31.1.1816. Her first child, also William Williams, was baptised in Llanbeblig on 16.2.1817. Her second child, Jane Williams, my gg gmother, was born about 100 miles away at Llanfyllin on 26.11.1819, and baptised at Llanbeblig on 30.3.1821. According to family legend the family emigrated to America leaving Jane behind to be brought up by an aunt. A search of passenger lists does show a W and S Williams reaching Baltimore in September 1820 aboard the Willem den Ersten.
W Williams 28 years
S Williams 26 years
W Williams 5 years
There are also several Jacksons aboard the same boat.
Why otherwise Jackson?
Why go all the way to Llanfyllin?
Any ideas about where they went in America, if these are the correct people?

My parents currently live in Crowfield. There is a footpath linking it to Syresham. I think it was during the black death that villagers from Syresham left food half way along the footpath for the Crowfield villagers as they were to scared of catching it to actually go all the way in.

Not sure if this is relavent, but my grandfather (Henry) served with the North Bucks Light Infantry in the 1880's in India. He married an 'Adams' who was the cook / housekeeper for a family who had houses in North Buckinghamshire and London (near Eaton Place / Square I think). The Adams family (no pun) was based around Saffron Waldon in Essex.

My grandparents lived in Harlesden and Ealing in London. They had 6 sons between 1901 and 1913.

I've done some minor research and it tends to show that 'Wrighton' was a Buckinghamshire name, though spellings include Ryghton and Ryton, both from Yorkshire ....

I have been researching Rightons for many years, this was the maiden name of my grandmother. Her father was Wiliam John Righton born 18th July 1844, in Tottenham, London, England. His parents were Thomas and Ann Righton (nee Corrie)and they were married in 1828 in Bloomsbury, London, but I have not gone further back on that line yet. Thoimas was a painter and engraver. Wlliam John Righton owned a zinc factory in Euston Road, London and lived on the site.He was married twice and his children were:
Alexander William R born. 1867 m. Margaret Ann Smith 1893
Walter Harry R. born 1871. m. Fanny ? 1896
Ada Henrietta R. born 1873
Emily Grace m. 1887 to ? Garrod
Lilian Beatrice R. born 1885
Arthur R. born 1879
all the above born to William and 1st wife - Emily Reeve
Dorothy Eevlyn Alica R. born 1896 (my grandmother)
only child of William and 2nd wife - Alice Stevenson.
Hi
It seems unlikely, as all my branch of the family came from oxford/northants border. The only variant of the name I have so far found is wrightson. I agree that the initial w could well have been ignored, but at the date you gave I think that improbable.
Thanks for posting anyway.
