Seeking descendants of Garry and Sophie (Englund) Wynkoop

Hi - I am seeking descendants of Garry and Sophie (Englund) Wynkoop who lived in the Providence, R.I. area. Both were born around 1867. Sophie was born in Sweden. I believe Garry was born in New York State and had many siblings. Garry and Sophie had 3 children that I know about: John, who has no living descendants, Marion, and Mary. My mom is distantly connected to them (John married a Darling/Remlinger connection of ours), and we have some pictures to share.

Re: Harry B. Wynkoop / Los Angeles CA

Hi Jon,
Looks to me like the Wynkoops who built 2905 Beachwood Drive were:

Harry Bernard Wynkoop, b. 19 Oct 1881 in St. Louis, MO; d. 27 Sep 1952 in Los Angeles, CA.

m. abt. 1907

Mae Agnes Quinn, b. 3 Aug 1886 in Clinton, IA; d. 4 Nov 1955 in Los Angeles, CA.(Mother's maiden name: Cunningham)

Harry was a furniture dealer. He & Mae lived at 2707 California ST, San Fransisco, CA before moving to L.A. The 1930 census for Harry & Mae in L.A. does not show any children living in the household; shows Harry's father b. in NY; mother b. TN; Mae's father b. Canada; mother b. IL. The census also shows the house at 2905 Beechwood DR valued at $7000, perhaps slightly less than its current value.

The 1880 Census, St. Louis, MO shows an H.B. Wynkoop, b. NY with wife Ada, so they're possible parents of Henry Bernard, (perhaps he's H.B., Jr.) but don't know more.

Anyway, none of these names tie in with my Wynkoop research, so can't give you much more. And since no known children of Harry & Mae, less likely for you to be able to locate someone who may have info on the house in storage.

Hope this info is of use.
--John Freed

I am intrigued by your last name and the obituary you cited, presumably of a relative. My former husband's (Elwood B. LYNCH, Jr.) mother was a WYNKOOP, daughter of Alva Lee WYNKOOP, a single child for whom I am having a problem with determining his heritage. Elwood was born in Silverton, CO. His grandfather Alva Lee was born 1865 in Connersville, Indiana, to G.WYNKOOP born Feb 1834 near Harper's Ferry,West Virginia. I do not seem to be able to connect his gggrandfather to any known WYKOOP family. Do you have any suggestions?

Yes, that is me. :-) My service dates were Oct 16,2002 - Jul 28, 2007. Sergeant, USMC. I met briefly met your son, Robert Wynkoop when I was on deployment to Iwakuni, Japan (Spring-Fall 2004). Everyone on the base knew Robert Wynkoop because he was on the base radio station every day. I was often asked around base if I was the radio DJ when people saw my name tapes.

Re: Wynkoops in Moreland Pennsylvania

Hi Chris,

I'm sorry to hear you aren't feeling well and I wish you a fast recovery. I know it's tough to get everything in order so please don't think I felt you were ignoring me. I honestly didn't know if my information would be of any relavence to you nor was I sure if you had this information from another member.

My father's maternal grandmother is my connection to the Wyncoop/Wynkoop family. Her name was Ruth Mable Crane born 1920 and died 1996 in the Philadelphia area, and her husband was Reinard J Minster (1917-2003). It's my understanding she lived in Philly for most of her life but Reinard hadn't been involved nor spoken of by my family for as long as I can remember, and I found out he died in New Jersey. One of my great-uncles lives in Somerdale, NJ currently. My ggrandmother Ruth's parents were Frank Bernard Crane(1893-?) and Florence Wynkoop (1895-?). I found this by spelling the lastname with a "k" instead, as your family does. Frank B. Crane was from Marienette City, Wisconsin but I'm not sure when he moved to the Philadelphia area. He and Florence were married in 1914. I have several Census records that show he lived in Philadelphia Ward 47 for many years and I have his WWI & WWII registration cards which state he was a Fireman for the city of Philadelphia. I haven't been able to find out which firestation/fire house he worked in though. Every record I found for Florence shows she lived in Philly her whole life. Her parents were Frank M Wynkoop(1863-?) and Mary A Wynkoop. I think a record for Frank Wynkoop also showed he may have been a widower at one point. Do you have any way of verifying this? The last ancestors of the Wynkoop family that I've found in my line were Frank's parents William H Wynkoop (1826-?) and Elizabeth (1827-?) who lived in Moreland, Pa. Are these your 2nd great grandparents? Could you please let me know if you're aware of whether my line does indeed coincide with your family as well? I'm always grateful for your help.

From what I've found the records for the family have all been spelled with a "k" not a "c" as my grandmother had told me. Since my family doesn't really talk about distant family and aren't much for discussion of our history, I thought this could be a mistake due to the family social structure. My main reason for researching my family tree is because nobody in my family really wanted to discuss anything, unfortunately. I will try to find out more about the story behind Wyncote, Pa. My grandmother had only mentioned it once and I was suprised to even get that from her. She out right told me it didn't matter to her, in regards to researching the family. I may try to ask some of her brothers and sisters for help and see what they can tell me.

Thank you for taking the time to respond. I hope you are feeling well again soon. I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,
Ashley

Ashley,

I apologize for taking so long to get back to you, but I'm very sick and the information I have is currently locked up tight on my PC in the back room. (I'm having major hardware problems at the moment and can't get the report I prepared for you off the machine at the moment.)

Basically what I can tell you is that William Hogeland Wynkoop and his wife Elizabeth Blake are my 2nd great grandparents. I'm descended from their son Charles H. Wynkoop, also a carpenter like his father, (who was also a farmer, by the by.)

This is the second time I've heard the Wyncote story and I'm hoping that you'll share the story your grandmother told you about that since I've had trouble verifying it myself. I believe the Wynkoop relationship to Wyncote has something to do with the Woodward family.

Regarding the spelling of the last name. Our branch of the family has always spelled Wynkoop with a "k" rather than a "c." Peter Wijncoop, the first Wijncoop on the continent, (as far as I know, and no relation to our ancestor, Cornelius), did spell his name with a "c" however.

At any rate I'll have to ask you to be patient with me while I get my hardware problems resolved. I do promise to get back to you with your family tree in the near future. In the meantime if you could give me some details about your descent from Bennie Crane I would appreciate it.

All my best,

Chris Wynkoop
chwynkoop@hotmail.com

Does anyone have any information on a Wiliam H Wynkoop and his wife Elizabeth? William was a farmer and/or carpenter by trade, born about 1826. I can't seem to find much more about the family. They had many children including my ancestor Frank M. Wynkoop which traces more recently, down to the Crane and Minster families, both from the Philadelphia and New Jersey areas. My grandmother also told me the first ancestors in my family spelled their last name Wyncoop and the area of Wyncote, Pa. was named for her grandparents. I would appreciate any help.

Marie Bunch Wynkoop d. 1926 m. Charles Wynkoop

am seeking information on Willis L. Bunch born c1868 Preble Co OH, d. 30 Aug 1951 at Duke Rest Home in Jamestown. He was married to Laura Stella Zeek who died in 1935. Obits list three children:

1. Charles Eugene Bunch who lived in Dayton in 1935
2. Marie Bunch m. Charles Wynkoop - Marie d. 1926
3. Esta Bunch m. ?? Hapner

My grandfather, John McNamara, was orphaned as a young child and raised by "Uncle Will and Aunt Laura" in the Eaton OH area. I do not know the surname of the couple who raised him. My grandfather left this home between 1893-1903, and is living in Cincinnati in 1906.

My grandfather said that Uncle Will was a wheat farmer, and they often traveled between Eaton OH and Richmond IN. He said Uncle Will lost a great deal of money in the "wheat bust" of the 1880s.

I have searched for over 40 years to locate and identify the "Uncle Will and Aunt Laura" in Preble Co OH who raised my grandfather.

As far as I know, my grandfather, John McNamara, was born in Lexington KY on 30 Apr 1884 (one record says he was born in 1874). His SS form said his parents were: Frank McNamara and Mary McCoy. I have not confirmed this with marriage or death records.

The family story is that his mother died when he was a baby and his father was killed on the courthouse steps -- no other details. Why was this chld taken from Lexington to Eaton? What relationship to him was Uncle Will and Aunt Laura?

If anyone can get in touch with these BUNCH descendants, please ask them to contact me directly at:
mart2542@aol.com
Re: Col. George C. Wynkoop - - Mystery Solved !!

Myster solved! Thanks to Christopher Wynkoop the identity of the persons in this photograph has been resolved. They are: Col. John Estill Wynkoop and his 2nd wife, Annie (Halberstadt) Wynkoop, circa 1863.

According to Chris Wynkoop's records, Col. John Estill Wykoop was a nephew of Col. George C. Wynkoop and for a time during the Civil War, served in the same cavalry unit with his uncle, that being: The 7th Pennsylvania Cavalry.

Thank You Chris Wynkoop for your knowledge and response.

Mike Clarke

Col. George C. Wynkoop

Recently I purchased a gorgeous Civil War era photo on ebay. The photo is a reprint of a wet glass slide and depicts a seated Union officer wearing tall leather boots and behind him standing is a woman; presumably his wife.

The ebay item title of the photo included the name "Wynkoop". I emailed the seller and asked who is or was "Wynkoop". To date, the seller has not replied so I did a little research and found out that there was indeed a Col. George C. Wynkoop, 7th Pennsylvania Cavalry during the Civil war.

Is anybody aware of this photo? I'm thinking this is a photo of none other than Col. G.C. Wynkoop and his wife, Mary Ann (Walker) Wynkoop. I haven't received the photo as of yet, but I can tell you the full size version is simply stunning! Small version of it is attached.

Thanks.... Mike, Muncy Valley, PA

Clyde Amendal Wynkoop
(unknown newspaper, unknown date. Found in "The Ancestors and Descendants of Johnannas Feuz and Margaret Gertsch Feuz" by F. Clyde was one of eleven children born to Simeon and Mary Wynkoop.
He lived in Madison township and attended rural schools there. Following his marriage on February 25, 1903 to Orilla Sophia Feitz he farmed in Jackson township for a few years. They had one child, Lola Gayle, now Mrs. Gale Marston. The family moved to La Jara, Colorado for two years, then returned to Earlham. Following their death, he resided in the family home with his sister, Mrs. Blanche Wright.
The last years of his life were spent close to nature in gardening and taking care of the lawns at the home. One the last day before his illness, he cleared the walks of snow.
Clyde was preceded in death by his wife, Orilla Sophie Feitz, on November 14, 1947; his brothers Garry and Zene; and his sisters, Mrs. Anna Cook, Mrs. Birgie Hamilton, and Eva, Aileen, Louie, and Grace Wynkoop.
Surviving him are his daughter, Mrs. Gale Marston; his grandchildren, Barbara, Ted and Paul Marston; one great grandson, Grant Marston; two sisters, Mrs. Roy Price and Mrs. Blanche Wright, and many nieces and nephews.
Happy is the family
Whose members love quiet places…
Such a family shall be at one with nature,
And in tune with the universe,
And shall know that God lives,
Even when the seats of the mighty are shaken.
---L. Foster Wood
Behold what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called children of God, and such we are.
--- I John 3:1 AR

Services for Clyde Wynkoop, 90, were held at the Earlham Presbyterian church on Friday, April 16. Rev. Dean Redshaw was in charge of the service. Music was provided by Mrs. Fred Fry at the organ and Mrs. Earl Schalkle at the piano.
The church floral committee, Mrs. E. G. Tough, Mrs. Wilbur Beeson and Mrs. B. G. Harris cared for the flowers. Active casket bearers were Joe Lorimor, John Henkle, Al Gilbert, Franklin Junkin, Loyal Werts and Leonard Scar.
Honorary casket bearers were Fred Petersen, Bruce Garrett, Lester Patten, Earl Schalkle, Jim Guisinger and Mervyn McLennan.
Internment was in the Earlham cemetery.

Card of Thanks

Our sincere thanks to everyone who has shown their kindness in so many ways during the illness and death of my father, Clyde Wynkoop. To those who called at the hospital, the thoughtful deeds during his illness and death, the cards, flowers; food and expressions of sympathy are deeply appreciated. Thank you one and all.
*	Mr. and Mrs. Gale Marston and Family
In researching my Wells family in Ontario Co. NY I found married in Seneca, Mr. Tobias Wynkoop to Miss Eleanor WELLS, on 3 nov 1819 as listed in the Geneva Gazette and the same spelling for Eleanor WELLS where they are listed with one of my relatives Justin H. Wells who married Elizabeth Ann Clark in the town of Seneca 20 Sept 1826.I thought this might be of interest to researchers since I noted wife"s maiden name spelled differently.

Wynkoop W. Dickey, son of John W. & Martha Dickey of Maryland, born in Pa.

Hi,

I'm looking for information on Wynkoop W. Dickey, b. abt. 1840 in Pennsylvania but lived the rest of his life in Maryland, primarily the Baltimore area. His parents were John W. Dickey and his wife Martha, both of Pennsylvania. The information I have on the family from the 1860 Somerset County, Maryland census is as follows:

Page 111
Free Inhabitants in Tyaskin District, in the County of Somerset State
of Maryland, enumerated by me on the 26th day of June, 1860 Samuel Meaton(?) Ass't Marshal.
Post Office: Tyaskin

22 794 763 John W Dickey 55 M W Teacher 1000 200 Pennsylvania
23 Martha " 49 F W "
24 Winkoop W " 20 M W "
25 Anna E " 16 F W " Attended School
26 Thomas M " 14 M W " Attended School
27 Samuel " 12 M W Maryland Attended School

I'm hoping someone can tell me how this family is related to the Wynkoops of Pennsylvania, and what Martha's maiden name might be. (Actually any information you can give me would be a big help, as I really know very little about this family at all. They don't appear in any of the published Wynkoop genealogies.)

Keeping my fingers crossed.

All my best,

Chris Wynkoop
Wayne, Pa.
Fernandus VanSicler / Eleanor Wyncoop / Phoebe Fisher--mid 1700s

I am looking for information on either of the two wives of Fernandus VanSicler (VanSickler, Vansickle) [b. 11 May 1738 in NJ, d. 22 Aug 1818 North Fork, Loudoun Co., VA]

His first wife was Eleanor "Lenah" Wynkoop [b. Abt. 18 Jun 1741 Abington Twp., PA], daughter of Phillip Wynkoop and Margaret Conover [sic]. They had two children. What I am looking for is information regarding Elenor "Lenah" Wynkoop Vansicler's Death, which some claim is around 10 Jun 1771 in North Fork, Loudoun Co., Va. I'd love to find solid evidence of her death, as well as her burial location!

Also, I'd love to have any information about Fernandus Vansicler's second wife, Phoebe Fisher, with whom he had a child, Wyncoop Vansickle. I have been able to find almost no information regarding Phoebe. I believe she may have been a widow when she married Fernandus, but that is speculation on my part.

If you have any information that may be helpful regarding these two ladies, I'd love to see it! I have information on the decendants of Wyncoop Vansickle, and would be glad to share.

Thanks!
