Hello! I am trying to track down the ancestors of Robert S. Hicks, b. 14 March 1781 d. Oct 1849, Crawford County, Georgia. We know from a will he has a sister named Yancey Hicks and I have to think there is a tie to your Yancey's. Robert S. Hicks married Nancy E. Grace (whom we know nothing about). Some researchers believe that Robert Hicks from NC is his father. Do you have any info that could shed some light on this line? Many thanks! Haden

Re: DEATH - John Yancy

I stumbled upon this fact page by accident, looking for a different and older John A Yancy that served in WWII AAF on the Tinian Isle. A part of the Manhatten Project he was. This young John most likely an heir, grand son or son. Why would anyone want to hurt him? Blood revenge? Reproach? An Insult maybe?
Funny how those things are important to certain people who put too much importance on revenge instead of appreciating history for what it has taught us.
I do not believe this was suicide at all. These people who aren't interested in the case have apparently been told to keep it quiet and let it fade away. Why? Connections, connections, connections. It's how GW Bush became president is it not? Connections through his dad, as we all know but did nothing about it.
Have our people really become that indifferent to our nation? What others fought so hard to give us, their children, grandchildren? Why aren't people sticking together anymore? I often ask myself that question.
God rest this young man's soul, may the truth find it's way out into the open. What men seek to hide in secrets may it be shouted from the roof tops.
If he reported what was done by these bullies may explain why he is now gone. Fear is not an option, fight against the evil of the day least you become a victim of it. Stand up as this man did, stick together, remember Thor's Hammer and the word of God. Fear not.

Dalton Yancey - Sugar Lobbyist

[FREDERICK DALTON YANCEY III]

Sugar Lobby Icon “D-Y” Retires from DC, Returns to Florida
by Gary – June 30th, 2008

This news post taken from an American Sugar Alliance communique this week noting that Dalton Yancey is moving back to Florida to retire after years of service to the sugar industry in Washington D. C. [as a lobbyist] Some of us have known Dalton simply as “D-Y” since way back when he represented the Florida Sugar Cane League. AgNet hats are off to Dalton Yancey and his wife Barbie as they return to the Sunshine State to enjoy their retirement years! Now, here’s the story published this week by the American Sugar Alliance:
The conclusion of the 2008 Farm Bill brought mixed emotions for the sugar industry. There were smiles of relief because the long political grind was finally over. But smiles gave way to tears when folks realized that Dalton Yancey, a 30-year sugar lobbyist, had completed his last legislative task and would now retire to Florida with his wife, Barbie.

Those who worked with Dalton remember the smile, the laugh, and the litany of anecdotes that could brighten even the darkest of situations.

Ryan Weston, Dalton's successor with the Florida, Texas, and Hawaii Sugarcane Growers, recounts one of his favorite Dalton stories:

One time Dalton was at a funeral for a friend of a close friend when the officiating pastor was caught in a traffic jam. Everyone looked around the room and Dalton, known as a gifted speaker and a lay leader, was quickly chosen to perform the funeral ceremony. Dalton did a wonderful job and everyone thoroughly enjoyed the fine stand-in performance, especially Dalton's rendition of the 23rd Psalms. Knowing that he should console the family at the end of the ceremony, Dalton went down to speak with the departed's brother. The brother said, Dalton, that was a beautiful Christian ceremony and thank you, but I thought I should tell you that our family is Buddhist.

And Dalton didn't just rely on humorous tales to pick his colleagues up when they were feeling down about the Farm Bill's glacial pace. He would interject his experience into the conversation, reminding others that he'd worked six Farm Bills over the years, and that no legislation worth having is ever easy.

His knowledge will be sorely missed in our industry meetings, in the corridors of Congress, and in federal agencies, explains Jim Johnson, the president of the U.S. Beet Sugar Association, but his legacy of accomplishments on the commodity and trade policy fronts will endure many years after his retirement.

Vickie Myers, the executive director for the American Sugar Alliance, said it was Dalton's unique ability to use his senses his common sense and his business sense that helped him earn the respect of his colleagues and the greater agricultural community.

At his retirement dinner held in the waning days of the Farm Bill, Dalton's peers shed some light on the life experiences that made Dalton such a leader within the sugar family.

Carolyn Cheney with the Sugar Cane Growers Cooperative of Florida spoke of Dalton's spirituality he was active in Faith in Politics and his church.

Luther Markwart of the American Sugarbeet Growers Association thanked Dalton for his service to the country he won a Bronze Star for Meritorious Service in Vietnam.

And Jack Pettus, who represents the Louisiana cane industry, expressed admiration for Dalton's ability to keep things in perspective in a sometimes jaded town there is nothing more important in this world to Dalton than his wife and two children.

Presenting Dalton a going away present from the industry was an emotional Jack Roney, who is the policy director for the American Sugar Alliance. You have personally helped heal wounds, Dalton, with your kindness as a constant friend and with your great sense of humor, he said.

Dalton, the sugar industry wishes you and Barbie a happy retirement. You may be 1,000 miles from our nation's capital, but you will always be close to our hearts.

Goodbye and good luck, good friend.

OBITUARY - Thomas J Yancey

Thomas J. Yancey

Birth: Jul. 20, 1856
Death: May 2, 1934

The pall of death has once again descended into the business ranks of Waynesboro . . . this time to remove one of the three oldest merchants of the city, Thomas J. Yancey, in his 78th year of life.
Few indeed are the residents of the community that remember when the name Yancey was not associated with the grocery business her. Up until this last Christmas, when ill health removed him from active management of his present enterprise, the Wayne Grocery Company, Mr. Yancey was always "on the job", affable, likeable, friendly, and cheerful.
He passed on at 12:15 this morning. Since Christmas he has been confined to his home, only once since that time being able to leave his bedroom and come to the downstairs floor.

Funeral Services

Funeral services will be at the late residence on Pine Avenue at two o'clock Friday afternoon with Rev. C. E. Brandt of the Main Street Methodist Church in charge. After a short service at the home the procession will leave for Fort Defiance where burial will be in the Old Stone church cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be: S. H. Hall, J. S. Ellis, Dr. C. C. Bowman, W. L. Dally, R. V. Chew and J. Albert Quick. Honorary pallbearers will be: Dr. H. C. Macpherson, R. G. Vance, J. Guy Rusmiselle, J. H. McCray, Pliny Fishburne, G. H. Branaman, E. W. Barger, F. K. Gabriel, Guy W. Hamilton, E. K. Fitch, Dr. Ernest Mosby, W. E. Drake, C. M. Lambert, J. Frank Harper, Robert Mantiply of Amherst, Va., and Wilbur Adkins of Lynchburg.

Here Sixty Years

Mr. Yancey was born on July 20, 1856, at Yancey Mills in Albermarle County, and came to Waynesboro when 18 years of age to work in the store of J. A. Patterson. This store was located on what is now the First National Bank Corner. Later he was employed in the store of J. B. Roden and in 1899 went into business for himself under the name of T. J. Yancey and Co,
In the year 1908, Mr. Yancey secured the lot where the building occupied by the Kroger store now stands and built there and also on Wayne Avenue down to the Culton store where the Gas company is now located. The present First National Bank structure was erected at this time also.
Mr. Yancey sold this property about five years ago with the intention of retiring from business but after a few months he began to grow restless for the routine of the store and re-opened as the Wayne Grocery Co. in the L. B. & B. building on Wayne Avenue.

Family Survives

Mr. Yancey was married to Mattie C. Hanger of this city and had one daughter, Miss Annie Yancey, and two sons, C. K. Yancey, clerk Augusta County Board of Supervisors and Henry Yancey, city manager of Petersburg. All these survive him. Mrs. Yancey died in 1923 and Mr. Yancey married a second time three years later to Mrs. Ida Moose of Richmond, who survives him. Mr. Yancey has one brother, R. A. Yancey of Yancey's Mills who is 84 years of age and is quite active and who likewise survives.
Long a member of the Main Street Methodist church, Mr. Yancey lent himself to all religious and civic enterprises, during his long residence here, which contributed to Waynesboro's growth and progress. He will be deeply missed in the community.

Waynesboro News Virginian-date of paper: May 2, 1934

BIOGRAPHY - John Wesley Yancey

JOHN WESLEY YANCEY

Birth: Feb. 16, 1840
Franklin County
Indiana, USA
Death: Jun. 22, 1863
Mississippi, USA

John Wesley Yancey, the son of Ambrose and Phebe Jane Goff Yancey of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, was a devout Methodist and was studying for the ministry before he enlisted in the Union Army in Iowa, and he was very proud to do so. His fellow soldiers wanted him to be an officer, but he refused the offer because he thought that someone who had a family and needed the extra pay ought to be an officer. He wrote a diary while he was in the service, and he expressed his faith in God and said he would gladly die just as his brother-in-law, Henry Clarke Zickefoose, did for the freedom of slaves, and he was glad that his family's farm in Iowa did not have to go through the destruction he had seen in the South during the war.
John Wesley Yancey, calvaryman, was killed in action on his horse during the Civil War at Big Black River, Mississippi, on June 22, 1863. He served with Company K, 4th Regiment of the Iowa Volunteer Cavalry.
John W. Yancey was killed near Black River in the rear of Vicksburg age 23 years 4 months 6 days. He was a member of the Company H 4th Iowa Calvary. He was buried at Flower Hill Chapel on Bird Song Ferry Road, 15 miles east of Vicksburg June 22, 1863. His remains were later transfered to the Vicksburg National Cemetery in Vicksburg, Mississippi. His father Ambrose Yancey of Mount Pleasant, Iowa, tried to have his remains returned to Iowa, but he had no success. I, Rebecca Osmond Hold, found his grave in April, 2009, and believe that I am the only family member to visit it, as no one else knew where he was buried.

Rebecca Osmond

OBITUARY - June H Yancey

June Hardage Yancey passed away on Tuesday, April 3, 2012.

Graveside Service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday at Mountain View Cemetery in Marietta with Rev. Dr. John Wells officiating.

Myrtis June Hardage was first-born of the late Rufus W. and Elizabeth (Bess) Milam Hardage, on February 13, 1933. She was later joined by a brother, Rufus Warren Hardage Jr. which made the family of four.
Because Rufus and his father operated a dairy-farm, Reuben O. and Dora Williams Hardage, completed a six-member home. They happily worked together to enjoy a good country life.
Before June got her drivers license, you would see her hopping the milk trucks. After she got her license, you would see her driving one of the truck all over Elizabeth and Marietta.
She attended the Elizabeth Jr. High School where was very active in 4-H Club, studied piano, and enjoyed three years of basketball. Because only the high schools in Cobb County had a gymnasium, she learned and practiced on Elizabeth’s red clay court, then the Jr. High Schools play games at the High Schools.
Her 4-H Club work presented a great variety of projects for her; where she went on to represent Cobb County at the district meetings. She accompanied many members who would sing, and at Camp Waseca, in Dahlonega, GA, she always played the piano for group singing.
After graduating from Elizabeth Jr. High, she went on to attend Marietta High School, where she became a member of the MHS Band, and played basketball. When asked her position, she often received a puzzling look when she said she was a forward. She hastened to explain that her short height didn’t matter since she could go under or around the guards.
It was here that she really came to appreciate the good sportsmanship taught at Elizabeth by their principle/coach.
The MHS 1951 Blue Devils girls won the State AA Girls Basketball Tournament. She often remarked that her 2 years were not long enough-she enjoyed both basketball and the MHS Band supporting the football team. In the band she played the Glockenspiel, both in marching and concert.

She is survived by her long-time friend-companion fiancé, Robert G. Brown Jr. of Marietta, son Randall (Randy) J. Yancey of Marietta; daughter, Deborah (Debbie) Y. Ray and husband, Alan Ray, of Armuchee, GA, granddaughter and her two children, Heather A. Yancey, Ezra Jake, and April Emma, Kennesaw, Ga.
June was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Marietta where she was active in ELM where she played the piano. She played the piano every Friday at Winwood for the residents where they would sing and laugh.
