I assume that perhaps James Andrew Yankee is possibly an ancestor of yours. If so you probably know that he served in Company F of Parson's 16th Brigade (Confederate). With his last name there must have been some interesting conversations around the campfire!
Norman

Hi Beth, Wow this is my George and also it seems Rhonda's also. Her relationship with you may be a more direct line. George A. married Effie(Eva) Yanke, a sister of my Great Grandmother Mary Yanke. I do have a family picture of the Yanke family and a wedding picture of Effie's parents Gottlieb and Victoria. I have a whole other side of Volks in my family also. My mother is a Volk and her father is Nicholas but I do not believe it is the same one as you mentioned. I believe Nicholas and Rose Volk were buried in Michigan City, IN. Nicholas's grandfather is Henry Volk buried in Wanatah,IN. So I wonder about him and your Henry. My Henry's dates are 1842-1919. I have an obit from him. Oh this is exciting. I want to hear more from you so please write me at my email address katieceglia@hotmail.com. There is too much to say on this site. Write me please!!

Katie and Rhonda -
I have a George A Volk, burried in Wanatah IN. died at age 72 (b: 1875 d: 1947). From what I have managed to gather he is the son of Andrew Volk (b: 1836 - 1896) and Katherine nee Faulker/Fulker (b: 1854 d: 1938). George would be the eldest of 5 children. My grandfather is Henry (b: 1882 d: 1952). The story goes that Andrew and his brother (name unknown to me, however there is a Nicholas Volk in the cemetary thats a possibility) immigrated from Alsac Germany date is unknown to me. All are burried in Sacred Heart Cemetary in Wanatah IN, and there is a stained glass window in the Sacred Heart Church 'from the family of George A Volk'. The last child of Andrew and Katherin was Elizabeth (b: 1897 d:1972) she was born shortly after Anrew passed away, and the story goes that George assisted in the delivery. Katherine's goal was for Elizabeth to go to college, she did and came home to marry a man named William Bos - not sure on children, but it appears someone is taking care of the graves in the cemetary - so there must be living relatives.

Is there any connection there, any blanks you can fill in. I've probably provided too much information and now won't hear a word back.....

I visited Wanatah and the cemetary in the begining of July 03, and am desperately curious for family history!

Hi fred, I noticed you were wondering about the Yankey family name. The Swisshelm family originated from Germany. Their name was originally Schweisshelm, and it got all the way shortened to Swisshelm when they came to America, to Americanize their name as many families had done. Andreas Schweisshelm grandson George married a woman named Christina Yankee. She was a full blooded shawnee, and none of the yankees will claim her. I'm sorry I cannot tell you anymore, but that's how I know the Yankee name is with the Swisshelm name. And that is possibly how it got back to Germany, because that is where the Swisshelms were from.

Hello I am looking for info regarding Alice Nancy Yankee who was married to Edward Matthews Bohrn. They had one daughter Dorothy Ann Bohrn on February 28, 1901 in Johnson County, Missouri. Alice was suffering from TB and Edward thought that the weather in CA would be good for her so he moved to CA. She died there in 1904 or 1905 and we do not know the location of her death or where she is buried. We also do not know anything about her family. After her death Edward and Dorothy moved back to MO. He later married Florence Mae Knoles and had several children. Any information would be greatly appreciated. THANKS:)

My ggg
grandmothers name was Christina Yankee or Yankey she married a George Swisshelm. Christina, I believe was born in Virginia, later became W.V. around 1811 or 1812 and died about 1884. George was born in Cumberland County, PA c.1802, d: c.1899. They might have been married c.1835. They had two children that I know of maybe more. John Swisshelm who, it is said struck it rich in New Mexico/Az c. 1879 and my gggrandfather Isaac c.1836 or 1838 in Adams County, Ohio and married Mary Jane Hathaway on 8/20/1857. Please if any of these names are familiar to anyone e-mail me at shlee7994@mindspring.com.
