If you want to meet Yarbrough's you need to attend the Yarbrough National Genealogy & Historical Association meeting this fall in Petersburg, VA.
October the 19 and 20th. This would be a wonderful opportunity for any Yarbrough's to research their roots and to visit with their cousins. If you would like more information please let me know.

Yes, there was a meticulous restoration effort done to the house about 20+ years ago, in fact, I believe Herbert Gordy, was hired to redo much of the interior moldings. I will try to find the name of the book for you, I received the excerpt from My neighbor Colonel Thomas Lee, who lives next door to me in another antebellum home, and is a architectural historian with a lot of information about the area. His email is l4hpilot@earthlink.net.

David,

Thank you for the info. From the pictures it looks as though as or the previous owner restores the house just as it was right down to the fence. About the excerpt from the book. What is the name of the book and.where might be able to find it? It appears as though the previous story is about my grandfather W. T. B. Gordy. I am fortunate to have several pieces that my uncles Bill and D. X. made and one piece that I k.ow that my father made and there might more from what he told me. He did not follow in the pottery business but, worked for Lockheed. Once again, thank you for the Info.

Roy Lee coker died . I was his girlfriend at the time of his death in Springfield Missouri. He died in 1972 from injuries he suffered right down the street from my house on Park Street. His sister Sheena was not too friendly with me after his passing. I placed a pair of earrings he had given me in his casket. He will forever have a part of my heart. He was only 16 when he passed away. Sandra McMillan

John B. Yarbrough/Samantha Long oregon Idaho

JOHN B. YARBROUGH
In Washington county, Oregon, on January 6, 1845. the subject of this sketch first saw the light and he has been a typical westerner since that time, ever laboring for the welfare of the sections where he has bestowed his labor and doing a lion's share in this good work. His parents are James M., born in Kentucky in 1820, whose father, John, with his wife, were born in Virginia. The mother of our subject is Mary E. Smith, born in Carteret county, North Carolina, in 1822. Her father was Lemuel, who married Hannah Gilicon, both natives of North Carolina. John B. remained with his parents until twenty years of age and then started for himself. He was educated in the common schools of the day. His parents removed to Linn county when he was one year old and took donation claims, remaining there sixteen years. Then they sold out and went back to Washington county. Six years later they went to Crescent City, California, but in two years were back in Douglas county, Oregon, and eight years after that they sold again and came to Latah county. The father died here in 1896. When he left home. John B. rented land in Yarn Hill county then went to southern Oregon for eight years in the lumber business, where he was successful. One summer was spent in the Klamath country and then he returned to the Willamette valley in T876, and in 1880 he came overland to Latah county and preempted a quarter section nine miles east from Garfield, where the family home has been since that date with the exception of the years between 1896 and 1901, which were spent in the Couer d'Alene country.

Mr. Yarbrough was married to Miss Samantha, daughter of John and Margaret (Baker) Long, on August 2, 1867, and the following children have been born to them: Chrystina, wife of W. W. Messinger, in the Coeur d'Alenes ; John W, in the Coeur d'Alene district; Addison, in Latah county; Eli O., in Coeur d'Alene; Lottie, wife of Calyin Farnum, deceased; Mona, wife of J. Ross, in Coeur d' Alene; James, in Latah ; Margaret E., wife of Lew Solley, deceased ; Herbert, in Coeur d'Alene ; Homer, at home ; Leonard, deceased ; Gladys, at home. Mrs. Yarbrough was born in Virginia, on March 21, 1852, and her father was born in Pennsylvania, in 181 5, and the mother was born in Virginia, on February 17, 1828. Mrs. Yarbrough's brothers and sisters are Napoleon B., deceased, Christopher C, Mary, Ella, America, deceased, Emma, and John. Mr. Yarbrough has brothers and sisters as follows : Andrew J., in eastern Oregon ; Sarah J., wife of D. W. Hayden, in Latah county ; Martha J., wife of John Woodfin, in Latah county; Mary, wife of Levi Mohr, deceased; James, killed by a saw in a mill in Oregon; Thomas J., in Spokane, Washington; Lafayette, in eastern Oregon. Mr. and Mrs. Yarbrough are members of the Universalist church, while he is socialistic in politics and a member of the school board where he labors ardently for good educational facilities. The farm is well improved and a model place, being an abundant producer.

Source: Idaho, historically speaking

I am interested in learning more about this Yarbrough Line, particularly about Elisha Yarbrough and his wife, Rhoda Guy. Family lore indicates that a Rhoda Guy married a Yarbrough, but little is known about them. The Rhoda Guy who is part of my Moseley family line was the daughter of Elizabeth Moseley Guy and the granddaughter of Howell Moseley. Elizabeth's brothers, George and Miles, migrated to Texas. A distant relative claimed to have a letter from Rhoda to "Uncle Miles" Moseley expressing her intent to join the other Moseley's in Texas, but that never happened. Would be interested to know if the Rhoda Guy you listed is the same Rhoda Guy connected to the Moseley family.

Thank you for sharing the info on the history of Coweta Co. I have been given the wrong information through several "3rd parties". I was told one of my gg+ grandfathers was an architect in Coweta Co and designed and built either the Newnan Courthouse or the Newnan Library as well as several of the great homes there. I haven't been able to find the information myself but I was told it was a JONES ancestor rather than a Yarborough. This could explain why I haven't found anything.

William Yarborough was my gg-grandfather. My g-grandparents were Lucy Yarborough and Samuel Jones. Their youngest son Charlie Melvin (they called him Ted) was my dad's father.

Again, thanks for the info...it explains things better for me.

Sincerely,Kathy Jones Woodruff

For what is it worth, the 1910 census indicates that Sallie and L Boot both have been married 1 time, and for 20 years. This seems to me to follow the 1900 census which says that David and Sallie were married 10 years. I would tend to think that David and L Boot were one in the same. It is hard for us to realize in this day and age, how very casual people were in that time about names and ages. Hopefully more research will shed light on this.

For what it's worth, the information given on three death certificates of Sally Yarbrough Knight's children is interesting, though it isn't necessarily correct. I'm only going by the Alabama Death Index, compiled from statewide death certificates. It's notorious for incorrect transcriptions of handwritten names on death certificates, just as death certificates themselves are notorious for giving wrong genealogical information, grieving survivors often rattled or unable to think. But it's interesting to see the names of Sally's husbands as listed by her children's survuving spouses or children.
Herbert Lee Knight born 1894 is listed as the son of David D. Knight.
Bennett Lee Knight born 1905 is listed as the son of L.B. Knight.
And then William G. Knight born 1909 is listed as the son of David Knight.

Those are the only ones I find on just a quick look.
Obviously they can't all three be correct. And you should get copies of the original death certificates if you don't have them, though I suspect you do. I was looking for David Knight or L.B. Knight but didn't find death certificates for either of them.

You can experiment at Familysearch.org and may find them yet.

Name: Herbert Lee Knight
Titles & Terms (Original):
Titles & Terms (Standardized):
Death Date: 28 Oct 1964
Death Place: Roanoke, Randolph, Alabama
Gender: Male
Race (Original):
Race (Standardized):
Age at Death: 70y
Estimated Birth Date: 1894 **********
Birth Date:
Birthplace:
Marital Status:
Spouse's Name: Lucy Knight
Spouse's Titles & Terms (Original):
Spouse's Titles & Terms (Standardized):
Father's Name: David D.

You need to take another look at that 1900 census again. It is quite specific regarding birth dates, as ONLY the 1900 census can be. Pay close attention to the years they were married and compare it with the 1910 census that Sallie states she is married to "Boot". Because a date is set in stone, is not a deciding factor for its correctness. I personally know of cemetery stones that do NOT contain a correct date--whether it be a day or a year, etc. I don't assume that the information you first gave regarding these folks was correct. It's a starting point. And then I let the paper trail tell me the story. And, there is a story, as well as variations to that story, as you have different folks adding to it as you come upon each individual record. Pay close attention to that birth month on "Boot's" stone. Do you have a family member that personally knew David and "Boot" as two different individuals? Or has that information been ASSUMED by somebody? If so, who were David's parents, and who were the parents of "Boot". Information changes throughout the years, as folks do forget. You find that even moreso before the beginning of record registration, which is the period of time in which we find ourselves with SOME of these folks. The past issues of The Roanoke Leader that you came upon, did not follow up with an obit on "Boot". As you look for more information, on this family, in those issues of the paper, pay close attention to the names and INITIALS. This is a family of many nicknames, as so many other families were and are today. All of these names creep into the records. And little Mary! You don't even want to assume she got away without a nickname. Those other children--you might want to dig a little deeper. You need to take ANOTHER look for them in the 1920 census...again to be continued.

Thanks so much for responding. I think David and Boot are two different people because the 1900 census says David was born about 1873, and Boot's headstone, next to Sally's at Rock Mills, says 1865. I just found a little blurb about Boot in The Roanoke Leader. It said he was very sick in an 1 line article dated about a month before he died. I can't find the obit, however. My biggest clue to this mystery would be information about Sally and Boot's youngest child, Mary. I do know about the courthouse fire, but it's puzzling that I can't find an AL birth or marriage record for Mary Knight who was born c. 1910. Neither she nor Sally show up in the 1920 census either, though they never left Roanoke. Mary married Willie Ward, but she remarried after his death, and I don't know the second husband's name. Still searching...and grateful for help.

I assume by now you have info you were looking for back in 2001. If not, contact me, as I have a little info on Abel and Caroline Cowart. I'm looking for info on link between Abel and John A. Cowart, who is assumed to be Abel's grandson. Thanks.
I did some checking on these folks to see if I could come up with some answers to your questions. I was surprised by what I found. You probably already know that the Randolph County court house burned in 1896 or 1897 (depending on the source) and all the records with it--makes you want to cry! So you won't find a marriage record, with the exact date, for Sally & David, unless it's in a Bible somewhere or someone's precious old papers. But the 1900 Federal Census can get us pretty close. It states they were married for 10 years, when the census was taken. Their eldest daughter was 9 years old, and born in Dec. 1890. So, we could guess they were married the beginning of 1890. And that would put you pretty close. Now for the BIG question! Are you assuming that David & L. B. Boot are two different people based on the difference in the names?...to be continued.

William "RUFUS" Yarbrough

Looking for any info on William RUFUS Yarbrough b. abt 1840 TN and d. 1899 where unknown. Married Rachel S Bailey b. 1845 TN d. 1934 AR.
Sons: James Albert Yarbrough b. 1867 TN d. 1845 AR and
William G Yarbrough b.1880 TN d. 1956 AR.
William RUFUS Yarbrough went by Rufus. He served in the civil was, Co E TN 17th Infantry. (This info from Rachel's civil war widow pension application.)
This family moved several times in and around TN, AR, KY, MO and AL. I have not found where William RUFUS died. The records before his death was TN but the 1900 census records immediately after his death shows widow Rachel moved to AL with William G and his family. I do have documentation for all info I have included on this post. Hope to hear from someone soon!
