I cant remember what I have shared previously, so here goes.

George Perkins, b. 1782, either GA or NC.
marries
Elizabeth Wynn b. 1793/4 either GA or NC.

They marry 1809 in RichmondCo. They get married by Robert Webb, Justice of the Peace.

In 1810 a George Perkins, one adult female and a young male child are enumerted in Richmond.

We assume their oldest child John W. is born in NC about 1810 to be enumerated in that census. In the 1850 census John W says he was born NC about 1810.

George is in DicksonCo, TN for the W. of 1812, in 1814 and 1815. Between discharge and 1830, Georges movements are a guess. He isnt found in 1820 anywhere, but his daughter born 1818/19 states AL, and we think the other son might have been born in MarengoCo, AL 1821. My Rebecca was born in either Summerfield ( DallasCo) or Summerville ( MobileCo) in December 1824. George is granted 2 land patents in 1831 in DallasCo, so I am inclined to assume Rebecca was born in DallasCo. Additional land patents for George and John W. in Sumter and Choctaw Cos. in late 1830s.

John is MIA in 1840 census, some kids reported being born in AL, others in MS or LA, UGH!!

George is in Mobile in 1840 and moves to Union Parish, LA where he is enumerted Sept. 1850. He must have moved back to Mobile by January because he is enumerated in Mobile in the household of Rebecca and her family. George dies there in 1853. By that time, John W. has moved from Union Parish, LA to Anderson then Angelina counties in the mid 1850s, ( found him on tax roll records). In 1860 he is in AngelinaCo, in 1870 in Robertson.

In 1880 census, John is gone, wife Tabitha Red? Perkins is in Robertson, but she moves to RainsCo where she dies in 1889. Son William dies in Rains in 1885. William's widow Sarah D. Sanders is in Rains in 1900. Johns daughter Elizabeth is in Lamasas Co from about 1870 and on.

I am wondering if Yates is a family name such as Georges mother. Big wonder due to proximity of George Perkins and Yates in the census. When I look at the census in its entirity, there are several surnames that are prevalant.

Sue

Were any of those ever living in N. Carolina?
I don't have anyone farther back than my great-great grandfather, Issac Yates, who was born sometime around 1810-1815 in North Carolina. He left there and went to Mississippi and then to Hill County, Texas by 1870. He did have a son named Daniel Yates, who was my great-grandfather, who was born in Mississippi about 1845 or so. Daniel fathered my grandfather, then both Daniel and Isaac died within a few months of each other in 1880, probably from the same contagious disease, referred to as consumption, which could have been anything from tuberculosis, or typhoid, or even asthma. Many of their descendants suffer from asthma, which would be a genetic tendency rather than a contagious disease. So do you have dates for your people which you listed or birth places? I find an Isaac in 1840 Richmond County, NC, but the ages of his children do not match what I know about my Isaac's family.

Anita,

I dont have any 'known' Yates family, at least not yet. I just noted that the Yates were immediately below my George Perkins in that census, so I thought I would ask about the Yates in Richmond.

I just know family moved with family, especialy in this time period. I dont have confirmed parents for George, yet. I think he is linked to the Jacob Perkins who married Betsey Cole, but they may not have been parents, could be uncle and aunt or something else.

My George went to Dickson Co, TN and signed up for the 2nd West TN Militia and served from Sept 1814-April 1815. Other Perkins (the ones we think he is related too) moved to Dickson and neighboring Hickman some time after 1810 census.

So if any of your Yates moved to TN, in particular Dickson/Hickman area, especially around the w. of 1812 I think we should talk more.

My George ends up in DallasCo, AL in 1830. James Craig, his commanding officer lands there too, in early 1820s........

Sue

Did you look in Bibb County, GA for James E. Yates and his father, George Washington Yates? James E. had a son, Elma (Elmo) E. Yates born in 1871. In the 1880 Census, James E. is listed as age 23, when he was actually 33. Hope this helps! David Yates

Hello Linda - thanks for your message. I have often used the lanopc site to confirm dates but had not seen the one you sent, even today when I put in Ellen Yates and Robert Peel it gave me no matches. I know only too well that there are an awful lot of Lancashire Yateses having been born in Darwen myself, although now a southerner. My great grandfather Richard Yates was born in Entwistle in 1847, the family was somewhat peripatetic as his father Henry, born 1817 in Blackburn, was a railway engineer, they lived in Rawtenstall during construction of Summit tunnel under the Pennines and then in Entwistle when he worked on the Sough tunnel. After this they moved to Blackburn where both Henry and Richard served as stokers before becoming locomotive drivers; later several members settled in Darwen. I'm not fully convinced that we are connected to Emma Yates/Peel as I still need to confirm a couple of marriages and her father, William Thomas Yates, confuses matters even further by having four wives and lots of children, I wish you luck in trying to find your connection. Have you seen the book A History of Blackburn by W A Abram 1887 reprinted 1990 ISBN0948494107 pub THCL Books which is helpful about many local families? Mr Abram was a friend and mentor to my great great Uncle Henry who was one of the Blackburn poets so I feel quite kindly disposed towards him! Thanks again - Jean

Re: YATES Wills Proved or Administered Before the Court of the Archdeacon of Berks

I don't have any of these wills, but I do have some Yate wills of Canterbury Court and wills relating to Sir Charles Yate (pr. 1680).

Those include (at the moment)

Apollonia Yate (sister, pr. 1720)
Sir Edward Yate (grandfather, pr 1645)
Abigail Packington (grandmother, pr.1657)
Sir Thomas Gage (father-in-law, pr. 1654?)
Penelope Harvey (grandmother-in-law pr. 1661)

other possible kinsman-
James Yate (yeoman of Oxfordshire, pr. 1668)
John Yate (gent of Buckland, pr. 1639)

My reason for having Charles Yate at the epicenter of these wills collected, is because his will tells of some very interesting insight to his extended family. Both he and his sister, Apollonia, mention several Talbot's as nephews. And more importantly, he has correspondence with allied families of Lord Baltimore.
I would indeed be interested in sharing what I have and know, if it intrigues you, and I also have a question for this thread.
Do you or anyone out there know the connection between the Yate family and the Talbot family?
Hi Dorothy,

Thanks for your reply. As of yet I dont know if there is a connection.

My Georges family must have gone to TN at some point about the time of W. of 1812. George enlisted in DicksonCo, TN in 1814, was mustered out 8 months later in April 1815. He is next found in DallasCo, AL in 1830 census. We presume they were in AL prior to that but not in 1820 census as they are not enumerated in that county, perhaps Marengo or closer to Mobile, since daughter Rebecca was born in Summerville, AL in 1824. He moves around SW Alabama until 1840 when he is ennumated in Mobile. In late 1850 he is in Union Parish, LA and in early 1851, back in Mobile. George dies in Mobile, in Sept. 1853.

Elizabeth Wynn Perkins ( George's widow) follows son John W. on to Houston/AngelinaCo area in TX. We cant find Elizabeth anywhere in 1860 so we presume she didnt live until the census date, however she isnt in an mortality table either.

Due to Georges TN service, she applied for a bounty land grant as his surviving widow. The file from the National Archives is full of letters written on her behalf dated until June 1859, so we can assume she was living until that time. All indications are that Elizabeth settled in Crockett/HoustonCO, TX. We think daughter Nancy Perkins Hayman lived nearby. Son John W. was in AngelinaCo. and possibly AndersonCo, in the mid 1850s. Some of these Perkins kids moved on to Robertson Co, TX in 1870.

To date we have not been able to place this family in MS, but anything is possible.

If any of the info I provide rings a bell, happy to hear back.

I dont have a confirmed family to place George in. The Jacobs Perkins family just before my George in the 1810 census isnt missing a male named George, but I presume he is connected somehow, so I am looking at the other surnames around my George in that census for family name clues. I cant find a surname of a fellow soldier in the TN unit who was in Richmond in 1810.

Sue
sodixey@hotmail.com

I've thought a few times that this John may have been my great-great grandfather's father, Isaac Yates, born about 1813 in North Carolina. This is about all I know of him before his marriage to Christian McIntosh and possibly to an Indian lady named Eliza Tubbee (both within a year or two). He had a son John Wesley Yates by Eliza, and a daughter, Sarah, by Christian around 1837 and 1838. All I have to go on is that the census says he was born in North Carolina; and in an application by John Wesley Yates for Indian benefits for his two young sons, said he (John) was born in North Carolina and lived there til his mother (Eliza) died and then his father (Isaac) came and got him and they lived in Mississippi with the rest of Isaac's family and then moved to Texas about 1869. I don't have any other clues. Isaac and Christian are in Neshoba County, Mississippi with their children, in 1850 and 1860 and in Hill county, Texas in 1870. Isaac died in Feb. 1880 and John Wesley Yates died about 1910 in Hill co. Texas.John Wesley Yates married Jane Brownie McNair. I have most of the succeeding generations information. Another Isaac Yates in Mississippi sometime in the 1850's and following seem to have no connection with my Isaac. Please let me know if you find anything pertinent.

The only information that I currently have on John Sr. Yates is that he was born 1790 and died 1899. He was the first of three sons (John, Absolom and George W. [who is my great-grandfather] and one daughter Martha Patsy) Thomas was the father of these and Thomas' wife was Phebe Combs. Where Thomas was born appears to be in VA but the children apeear to have been born in TN. From there I do not know. If you come up with additional information I would appreciate hearing from you.

email same: pam4sunshine@aol.com
ggg grandfather is THOMAS G. YATES-i have plenty of info on him and his wife's family, all the way up to me. i have done all the search i just about can to find his father and back; not much to find, due to the lack of records from 1820 to 1840. what i have is a letter written to Thomas saying, " Thomas, sir, your mother has asked me to write to you...". it is signed John F. ( appears to be an F ) Yates. the "envelope" is sent from Troy, MS. i have John F. in Yalobusha Co. MS in 1850, and a civil war capture of maybe him, as he is sent to New Orleans during the war; nothing after that, but haven't traced down in future kids of his either. Thomas was also sent a letter from MS from his brother, John B. Yates, who i find a such killed in the war.
i find John F. Yates in Lawrence Co. TN in 1830 ( logged as j.F. Yeats), and since that is just a county north of where i am now, i figure that is the family; Tyree R. Yates fits in there somewhere. Thomas was born 1827 inTN. puts JOhn F. born around the same time to be brothers with tyree, or cousins. tyree b. 1807 in KY. i DO appreciate any insight you may have or happen to find! i am a guest on an extensive Yates tree that is full of folks that should fit in my tree, i just cannot make the connection with Thomas or his father. whew. have you a fine day! pam

here's my deal:
tyree is probably in my Yates line, because he lived in Giles Co. TN, and my greatgrandfather Yates went to Giles Co. TN in 1910 to be married-why else would he go there for that if not for kin? ( these Yates lived about 45-50 miles from Giles Co., and there were other choices of "marriage places") i have documentation for my Yates line back to ggg grandfather. it's HIS father i am looking for, and he would have been born around the same era as Tyree Yates, so they could be brothers or cousins; that's why i am looking for members of Tyree's family-to find my ggg grandfather's correct name. i have a handwritten letter i believe is this man, John F. Yates. He was in the county next to Giles Co. in 1830, just 3 years after the birth of my ggg grandfather; so i'm figuring that he and Tyree were related somehow. they moved to Lawrence Co. AL, my ggg grandfather stayed and farmed there, and John F. and others of the family went on to MS, where this letter was sent from;
i need John F. Yates, place of birth, his wife, his father, etc. to extend my tree.
i lose him in Yalobusha Co. MS in 1860 or 70 ( it's in my tree on here!)

Re: Lucy Alice Yates B.1871 to W.Yates and B. Roberts married W. Mercer

Hmmm - the William Yates in my tree was born 1844 in Lancashire England and his parents were Richard and Ann (Pomfrett). He married Betsy Roberts and had 4 children - Lucy Alice Yates in 1871(my great grandmother. She married William Mercer and had 3 children and they all came to Canada around 1911 apparently because of some family property in the Detroit Michigan area. Something went wrong with the land, and they eventually came up to Toronto Canada. They were oddly secretive about their family also. Do any of these details seem like they could be your family members too?

Arthur Tetley Yates dies in accident

Looking for information on the death of my great grandfather, Arthur Tetley Yates. He was born in 1876 in NY but was living with his wife, Florence and his young daughter, Regena in Wayne, Passaic NJ. His mother, Hannah, lived in Hoboken.
Have him at this area in 1900 and 1910 census - I know he dies between 1910 and 1920 in an accident that killed him. Trying to find info on that accident or Arthur's obit.
Does anyone have article, obit etc. on this - either hit by train or post of horse and buggy impaled him.
Trying to resolve this mystery.
Thank You.
Dotti Purwin Fucito

Hi David,
Thanks again for the information. Yes I would be very interested to see both of the photos you mentioned. I don't have many photos of the Yates family. I think that you can add attachments to these messages, so I am attaching a photo of my grandmother, Edith (on right) with?? taken probably 1950s, as a swap.
Regards
Graham

Hi Graham
I have the same names as you so we can't be far wrong, To go back any further is really difficult so it will probably mean a trip to Shirebrook and look through the parish records.
David Yates did marry May Crew in July 1912 and they lived in Mansfield, They had six children, Dorothy 1912, Harrold 1914, Olive May 1916, John 1920(Stillborn), Geoffrey 1924, Wynne 1932 (My Mum), They moved from Mansfield 1915/16 to Doncaster.
As they have all died now I am relying on stories I remember my mum telling us before she died, I do know she started to research the Yates family and visited the Shirebrook area about 1995 looking for information and she met a distant cousin called Amos, Could he be part of the family you visited in the 60's??
I will ask my brother and sisters if they can remember anything my mum might have mentioned.
I have an old crumpled 1900's photo that is not very good but I believe it to be of George,Sarah,Lydia,Edith,David and Mabel, I also have a good school photo of the twins Harold and George about 1915 if you would like a copy I will try and scan them and Email Them to you.
Regards David
Hi David,
My research also shows George Yates was married to Sarah Ann Randall (b.1866 Brampton). His father was David Yates (b.1835)of Langwith who married Mary Ann Coupe. I have his father as Joseph Yates (b.1801)in Scarcliffe who married Lucy Newton. Then I have Joseph's father as Jonathon Yates who married Mary Jarvis (this is where I guess the Jarvis Yates (b.1804)& the later Jarvis Yates (b.1862)naming came from).

I have George & Sarah Ann's children as Lydia, Edith, David, Mabel, Joseph, Lucy, Albert, George & Harold. Joseph and Lucy died young in 1907 & 1909 respectively. Do you know the history / marriages of any of these siblings of our grand parents? I think that your grandfather married May Crew, is this correct?

I remember visiting, with my parents, one of my Dad's relatives in Shirebrook in the 1960's. She was bedridden with arthritis and had as a result had very deformed hands.I cannot remember her name, but I have wondered since if she could have been on the Yates side, possibly Mabel?
Regards
Graham
