Hi Ross
Just reading the message boards and was interested in your posting about the Yeend's in Gloucestershire and Wales. My Grandad was William Edward Yeend who along with his brother Sidney George Yeend and his father in law James Higgs left Cheltenham between 1891 and 1901 and moved to Ferndale in the Rhondda Valley where my Father and I were born. Any information on the earlier family members would be greatfully appreciated.
Regards
Glyn

Heroics of Edward J. Yeend, Mobile, Alabama 1904

From the Mobile, Alabama, USA newspaper June 11, 1904

Sat., June 11, 1904

"At 1:30 yesterday afternoon the main cylinder in the hydraulic elevator at Yeend & Potter's dry goods store on Dauphin street burst with a noise like an explosion and shot out a stream of water which flooded the back part of the east side of the ground floor, creating a stampede among clerks and customers, and damaging between four and five thousand dollars worth of goods. ... Mr. Edward J. Yeend faced the stream from the cylinder, which was being forced out under a 75-pound pressure, and working his way with difficulty to the lower part of the elevator shaft through a narrow opening, succeeded in reaching the main valve and turning off the water. ... Several clerks and three customers who were right in the path of the stream of water when the cylinder burst were wet to the skin and got into the worst part of the flood in trying to get away from it."

Not my line, just sharing.

My Fathers name was Vernon Yeend. He came from a family of 7 children. He was born in April 1917. His parents were from Gloucester England and before that from Wales. When they arrived in Canada from England, they only had one infant child with them. I have been told that there was two (?) three children left in England with a Grandmother (Hart). Once they were established, the grandmother would not send the other children. The rest of the children were born is the US. Chicago area. There are still 3 girls alive living in various parts of the United States.

If this sounds like anything you can add to or I can help you, please let me know. I have no idea of the names of the children left is England.

I am just barely getting started on this geneology.

Sincerely,

LaVerne McCown

I would be interested in hearing from you. We must be related. My Father was Vernon Yeend, Chicago, Illinois. My grandmother, was a Vizard from England and somewhere the name Hart keeps coming up. I am just getting started on this geneology so I am lacking a lot of information.

I do have a copy of a newspaper article saying the Vizard and Hart line were direct descendents of Shakespeare. I would be happy to send a copy if you are interested. Please contact me.
