Is it possibly Member of Parliament?
or
Magistrate of the Peace [like American Justice of the Peace]??

It does not seem to be "Military Police" that far back, but perhaps it is that(?)

I want to be correct when I post the YONGES. There were some M.P.'s amongst the YONGEs in early Shropshire, ENGLAND.

much obliged,
Sally Randol-Hardy

Wow! Thank you Rebecca. A green tome, a 726 oversize-pages book that may interest you, is the late Eugene C. Hicks (Wilmington, N.C), Esq's book (fine person, we met) "Sir Ellis Hicks (1315).......Philip le Yonge (1295) and 7,812 Descendants", Library of Congress Catalog Number 82-81537.

Remote chance your Baker line might tie-in with mine? Tiege Cantey of S.C., had a son William Cantey who wed Jane Baker, daughter of Richard and Elizabeth Wilson Baker of supposed noble Baker lineage. Jane Baker Cantey had Mary Cantey who wed William Bellinger, Sr.; the son of Landgrave, Capt. Edmund and Mrs. Sarah Elizabeth Cartright Bellinger, Sr., of Ashepoo and Tombodly Baronies, S.C. Elizabeth Bellinger wed the Hon. Henry Yonge, Sr., Loyalist, H. M. Survayor-General of Georgia. His earlier wife, Christiana Bulloch Yonge, got his Loyalist sequested estates; she being the sister of Patriot Gov. Archie Bulloch of Georgia. Jim

Arthur Middleton the Signer was Henry Middleton's son, and Mary MacKenzie's stepson (Arthur's mother was Mary Baker Williams, Henry's first wife; Henry's second wife was Maria Henrietta Bull; Lady Mary was his third wife).

Henry Middleton was Lady Mary MacKenzie's last husband. She married first to Capt. Clarke (some sources give his name as Robert Clarke/Clark), second to Thomas Drayton, third to John Ainslie, fourth to Henry Middleton. She outlived all of them.

She had no children by Henry Middleton (apparently all of his children were by his first wife Mary Williams), but she is known to have had a son by Thomas Drayton, who was Thomas Drayton, Jr. Other children are mentioned in diaries and newspapers which can be found on Google Books. Her son "A. M'Kenzie, Esq." was reunited with her in 1786 after having spent 18 years away from his family and friends. It's not clear who A. MacKenzie's father was, but Capt. Robert Clarke seems most likely. Her son, Capt. MacKenzie (I don't know whether he's a different son or the same as A. MacKenzie, Esq.), accompanied her to England, along with one of the younger Henry Middletons (probably Arthur's son Henry).

After her fourth husband's death, Lady Middleton sailed for England to settle an issue with her deceased brother's property. She died on the return voyage.

I'm not too familiar with George MacKenzie 3rd of Cromartie's siblings, but I'll definitely keep what you've said in mind.

George MacKenzie's children (with Isabella Gordon), as far as I know, probably not in the correct birth order:
-Mary
-Ann
-John
-Augusta
-Isabella
-William
-George
-Caroline
-Jean
-Amelia
-Margaret

Right now, I don't have any proof that my family is connected to any of these people in a direct way. I'm keeping an eye out, though.

Happy Day,
Rebecca Haninger

Big thanks; alas I've been makeing that mistake a long time. The famed tourist attraction, Middleton Plantation belong to Arthur, the Signer: correct? Were Henry and Arthur related; and if so, do you know how? Do you know anyone who descends Henry Middleton and Lady Mary?

Do you know anything about Capt. William Mackenzie, H.M. Comptroller and Collector of Customs, 1771-1775, Sunbury, Georgia. If you read the Cromarty, Scotland, Earl of Cromartie, family history book; it says Capt. William Mackenzie (George's brother) perished aboard ship in a hurrican; the book named the local; possibly it was the Carribian or West Indies. Another book has him sailing up the Cape Fear River. The book did not name the ship or date of the hurricane, nor give a source; do you know where that data came from?

Our family tradition was he was a Brunswick County, N.C., militia officer prior to going to Sunbury, Georgia. Landward of old Orton Plantation on the Brunswick County shore of the Cape Fear River, is still undeveloped Mackenzie's Creek. Did that have a connection with Capt. William Mackenzie?

One good book has Mrs. Christian Mackenzie Yonge/Fleming's mother as Mrs. Catherine Campbell Mackenzie. I've also heard Christiana Campbell Mackenzie. I believe the brother of Christiana Cadwalader of Philidelphia, Dr. Cadwalader, was in the Savannah area doing "tropical disease" studies; could that Christiana have become Capt. Wm. Mackenzie's wife?

Thanks again for the correction.

Hi Clayton
I would like to thank you for your information, but before i go on I can tell you that Sarah Yonge married John May in 1783 not 1753.
John May was a builder from Stonehouse Devon and Sarah Yonge and her Family Stephen Yonge 1723 and her sister Lydia moved to Great Torrngton in 1775 after Stephen Yonge retired from his Upholstry business in Holborn London.
They were married by her Uncle Rev Henry Yonge in Great Torrington.

But my only querrie now is to find Sarah's Birth, I have managed to find Lydia who was Bapt in St James's Westminster in Feb 1749 but can not find any trace of Sarah's.

I was wondering if the book may be able to help me here? even if it gives a year would be very usefull as it will help me in my search for her Husband John May's birth. as John did not have a middle name as you can imagine tring to pin point the correct John May is proving a bit of a headache for me.

If you can help in anyway i would be greatful.

Kind regards
Linda

Hi Jim,
I believe I'm a descendent of Francis Yonge, Sr., though I haven't confirmed. I just learned of a probable Yonge ancestor of my paternal grandmother and I came across your post while trying to learn about the family.

The link I discovered is a woman named Annabella Amelia Yonge, who married Edward Doyle (my 4th great grandfather) in the Bahamas, as referenced in The Law Times v. 67 (Oxford University 1879). An entry on Rootsweb lists Annabella as the daughter of unknown Nutall and Henry Yonge III. Henry is the son of Henry Yonge II and Mary (Polly) Powell; Henry II is the son of Henry Yonge I and Elizabeth Bellinger.

I'd be very interested to be in touch if you have more information on this family - in particular, I'd love to find out whether or not this information is correct.

Best,
Rebecca

Hi Jo
Your email address (1999) is not valid. I've been researching Halpin/Halpen of Ireland and came across a Mark Halpen who married Lady Eliz. Lawley after her 2nd
husband, Sir Thomas Lawley died. Perkins was the name of her first husband.
She was the niece of John Bateman of London, Dr in Physic, so her maiden name could have been Bateman.
She seems to have married Halpen a few months after the baronet died, and he must have been a lot younger. There was some fuss about money, and he was convicted for assaulting a clerk at the Exchequer office in 1734. She died in 1740, and I believe he returned to Ireland & remarried, to Mary Paget. They are my ancestors.
I have found bits & pieces about the financial wranglings but I don'r really understand the situation. I think that Halpen was a gold-digger but was thwarted by the 2 sons, who were half-brothers.
I wonder if you know anything about Mark Halpen, (or Halpenn, or Halfpen or Halfpenny) ?
Ken Cooke
near Melbourne, Aust.
ps. there were two Geo Bateman Lawleys at least, I think Eliz's son was the senior one

The book lists Stephen Yonge b. 1723, m. Sarah Adams, son of William Yonge and Sarah Herne Ferrers, widow. There is nothing more in the referenced book about Stephen. However the book "The Yonges of Caynton, Edgmond, Shropshire" by Edward Yonge gives a bit more. It states that Stephen was admitted to Westminster School in 1735, aged 9 and "according to Mrs. Yonge" was of Great Torrington. He married Sarah Adams of Kingston-on-Thames. The had Lydia who died unmarried and Sarah who married John May of Great Torrington May 27, 1753. This information seems odd since Stephen would only be 27 in 1753. I cannot account for this. Stephens Yonge was a party to the fine by which Caynton was sold in 1749. His father was the last of the Yonge family owners of Caynton Manor. His father had married Sarah Herne Ferrers, widow of Captain William Ferrers of the Horse Grenadiers. She was the daughter of Sir Joseph Herne, M. P. and sometimes Sheriff of London. and Elizabeth, daughter of Sir John Frederick, Lord Mayor of London in 1661. There is more in the book on them and I will share it later if you wish. Stephen's grandfather William Yonge had, as the eldest son, inherited Caynton Manor, but little else. Most of the rest went to his half brother Mackworth Yonge (by his father's second wife Margaret Mackworth). The Mackworth Yonges are my ancestors, their son Robert, born in 1699, immigrating to SC about 1721. This, my line of Yonges, died out on the male side when Robert Yonge's grandson Francis Yonge died in SC in the 1780s. The line of Robert Yonge's half first cousin, the distinguished Francis Yonge, has many male descendants in the US and Canada. Edmund Yonge, who did the above mentioned book, is one of them. Let me know if this helps. Clayton RhodesSavannah, GA

I have a querry realy that is confussing me, I have traced My ancester John May a Builder of Stonehouse Devon, married a Sarah Yonge 17/10/1783 in Great Torrington, Devon.
Witness's to marriage where a Stephen Yonge and a Lydia Yonge, Minister was a Rev Henry Yonge.
All I am sure about at the moment is that John and Sarah had 3 son's Stephen Yonge May b1784, John May b1787 and William Adams May b1789.

I know that there was a Sarah Yonge 1749 father rev Henry Yonge, who married William Nelson.

I also know that Stephen Yonge married a Sarah Adams at Caynton Manor Shropshire in 1748 and they did have a daughter Lydia, but however can not find any record confirming my Sarah Yonge's Parentage, although I do believe that Stephen Yonge and Sarah Adams are her parents, as the name's Yonge and Adams continue further in my tree.
Does anyone know anything about the Yonge family at around the era i am looking as everything i have managed to find online is either too early or too late.
Anyone with any information I would love to hear from you.
Hi there

I am sorting out bits of my family tree and find that the heiress Mary Tomlinson who married my g g g g g grandfather George Bateman Lawley in 1738 was somehow tied up with the following families.
HERNE, YONGE, FERRES, TOMLINSON - she bought 8000pounds to the marriage.(She died and he married again and my desc. benefited from all the money.)

William YONGE is described as brother in law to Richard Tomlinson who married a Mary Herne in 1713. However i have a marriage of William Yonge to Sarah Ferrers in 1707 who was described as the sister of Catherine Ferrers spinster in her 1739 will. Most internet records give William Yonge's marriage to a Sarah Herne on the same date 1707.
I have the wills of Richard Tomlinson, Sir Joseph Herne, Joseph Ferrers and William Yonge (died 1749)

Can anyone clarify this for me especially if you have a book on the family.

Kind regards

Jo Sunbeam

The book is not indexed so it may take me a while to look up the names you mention. I have another book which includes the Yonges. This one is indexed and I could not find any of the names you mention.

My Robert Yonge came to SC from England ~1720. His half first cousin Francis Yonge was already there and prominent in the colony. The Yonges of Caynton book mostly treats the Yonge family that ended up in Canada. The male branch of my Yonge family died out before 1800 but some of their relatives ended up in Florida after the American Revolution. If I find anything, I will let you know.

Clayton Rhodes
Savannah, GA

Thank you so much. My Young/Yonges start with John Young born bet 1697-1715 VA died 5/11/1752 VA married Kitty Bruce. I have a book written by W. Hord Tipton called "The Tipton Family History". It shows that John Young descends from the Yonges. In this book I have noticed that it shows parent and child in line. It starts with Ierwerth married to Margaret(daughter of William Yonge de Sawardek), then their son Morgan Yong, then his son Jenken Yong, Morys Yong, Richard Yong, Edwin Yong, Ellis Yong and Sir Richard Yong. Under Sir Richard Yong is John Young married to Kitty Bruce. It doesn't state that John is Sir Richard's son, it just says that John Young descends from this line. I am trying to find out how John Young connects with this Yong line. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you
Mary Cook

Hi Bill,
Since this posting was in 2005 you probably don't have the book any longer but thought I would touch base with you just in case. I have been trying to research my Yonge/Yongs but haven't been finding much luck. According to what I have thus far, my Yonges go back to Shropshire and this line leads back to Tudor Trevor. I have been having some trouble with it though, in finding a specific relative. If you still have this book I would be interested in it or if you may recall whom has it now, that I may be able to contact them to ask my questions.
Thank you in advance and I look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely
Mary Cook

Clay,
Thank you so much for your reply - I do believe that the book you are referencng is the one I am looking for. I have tried to locate it on the Internet to purchase and at the Jefferson Co., AL Library - to no avail.

Since my posting, I have found that my George C.C. = George CHRISTIAN CREG Yo(u)ng(e). The other info I have about him is the same as the earlier posting. The man who had the info about the book and my guy is now deceased. The woman who gave me the info did not know the researcher's name.

It is very likely that my guy is a descendant of the same family, but not the George C.C. that you referenced. Perhaps my George and the other George are brothers or 1/2 brothers. Sort of like George Forman's sons.

Any info on a HENRY YO(U)NG(E) who might have fathered a son around 1822 (Clarke)GA and who may have died ca 1833-1834 would be of great interest to me. His wife = Mary Pierner/Perner. Multiple wives always gets tricky, doesn't it?

Is there a reference to a William Phillip YO(U)NG(E) in Thomaston (Upson)GA or to any PIRNER's/PERNER's in the book ?

My George C.C. Yo(u)ng(e) was accused later of being a cattle thief, so perhaps author Eugene C. Hicks did not count him "worthy "of publication(?)

I would be extrmemly appreiative of ANY clues.

Kindest Regards,
Sally Randol-Hardy

Don,
See Clayton Rhodes's post on 23 Nov 2005 responding to my search for the book. Clayton gives the complete title. I had incorrect information prior to contacting Clayton - who is a genius on the YONGE's.

I have not been able to do justice to the Yonge line yet because of other commitments. The following info needs to be reviewed by Clayton to be 100%, but here is what it looks like:
William Philip Yonge (b 1797 Nassau, Bahama Islands) of Thomaston GA was half brother of my son's ancestor George Christian Craig Yonge (b. 1-29-1822, Clarke Co., GA d. Washington Co., AL)

Their father was Henry C. Yonge (b. 8-10-1776 d. 1834) Your wife's ancestor was by Henry's 1st wife = ? Nuthall. My son's ancestor George CC Yonge was by Henry's 2nd wife = Ann Cox.

Henry C. Yonge was s/o Philip Yonge (b. 1754 d. 1-21-1782) and Christian McKenzie.

Don, the Yonge history appears to be very rich. Clayton Rhodes is the person you need to contact - he does not get confused in all of the details.

Good hunting,
Sally

Sally, I just sent a reply listing some of the children of George Christian Craig Yonge. I then see that some of the listed children were listed as born after his death date in 1869. The author of the book made a number of errors like this.
This is the person you mention.

This is the same one you mentioned. I found a Chandler Cox Yonge, his brother, in the book and assumed he was the one you were looking for. Looking further down I found your George Christian Craig Yonge. It says that he was taken into the family of his half brother William Philip Yonge of Thomaston, GA after the death of his parents in 1833-34. There is a story in the book that says that family lore says he sold his slaves when he saw the South would lose the war. He then bought cattle. He was known, according to the story to carry large sums of money. He was shot dead and robbed. It was alleged, but not proven that the killer was the buyer who was getting revenge.
The book has him born January 29, 1822 and died October 16, 1869. He married first Nancy Beatrice Allen and had children Ann Cornelia and Mary Beatrice. He married second Lucinda Virginia Pringle and had chidren George Penn, Kate C., Agnes H. and Lina P.
The book carries the Yonge family back to the 1200s. Your line and my line diverge in the 1600s. Your William Yonge the oldest son at the time was left the family home Caynton Manor but nothing else. His children by his second wife, including my Mackworth Yonge, received almost everything else. Willam's son was the rekowned Francis Yonge who came to SC. Mackworth's son Robert, half first cousin to Francis came to SC about 1720. The male line of Yonges on my side has died out in America but the William/Francis Yonge line lives on.
I can send you some pages from the book if you will give me a street address.

I just replied to an query about Anne Cox Yonge's brother George C. C. Yonge at the Yonge family site. This query is a few items above your query. Rather than retype it again let me refer you to that answer. I suspect you already have plenty of information since you posted this query.

Clayton Rhodes
Savannah, GA

Re: Book on Yonge's back to the 1200'es????

I have a copy of the book you are looking for "Sir Ellis Hicks (1315) Captain John Ward (1598) John Wright (1500) Philip le Yonge (1295) and 7,812 Desendants' by Eugene C. Hicks 1982. Library of Congress Catalogue Card 82-81537.
This book had George Chandler Cox Yonge born October 3, 1818, to Henry Yonge and his second wife Ann Cox. He died February 17, 1889. He married Julia Ann Cole. Henry C. Yonge and Christina McKenzie.
These Yonges descend from one Francis Yonge who was liaason between the Lords Proprietors of South Carolina and the Colony of SC among other things. He was Chief Justice of SC in 1719. He returned to England but his son Henry remained and was Surveyor General of GA about the time of the American Revolution. The family was Loyalist and lost everything after the war. Their descendants were instrumental in the founding of the University of Florida.
I descend from Robert Yonge (1699-1751) who was half first cousin to Chief Justice Francis Yonge.
There is a short paragraph about George C. C. Yonge in the book that conflicts with a death date of 1889. I will send what is in the article later if you wish.
Clayton Rhodes
Savannah, GA

George Christian Creg Yonge or Younge b. 1-29-1822 (Clarke) GA

Hopefully you have come across this weird name:

I was told 100th hand that this man was s/o a Henry Yonge & Mary Ann Pirner who both d. ca 1833-1834. George CC was b. to them in (Clarke) GA and when his parents died, he went to live with a 1/2 brother named William Phillip Yonge in Thomaston (Upson) GA.

I am trying to see if this is really my son's
George CC Younge/Yonge who m. Nancy Beatrice Allen
in Pensacola (Escambia) FL 9-3-1841. The couple moved to
South AL (Mobile) & (Wash.) and had 3 daughters
1. Ann Cornelia b. 6-1841, (Esc.)FL
d. 5-14-1923 (Wash.) AL
m1st: Wm Stribling
m 2nd: Powell Bates Johnston (*****my son's line)

2. Corinna V. b. 1845, MS m. Frank Pringle
3. Mary B. b. 1847, FL? m. E. L. Collins

Next, George CC and Lucindy Virginia Pringle were together.
I have not found a marriage record to date. They had 2 children: Geo. P (1866-1956) & Kate C (1870-1938)
After George CC's death in 1868, Virginia was with William D. Wainwright in Citronelle (Mobile) AL. There were Yonge descendants in Citronelle and I had heard that a Marion Yonge (Maybe s/o Geo.P i.e. Geo. Marion Yonge b. 1895 d. 1976) either had, or wrote, a book on the Yonge family wherein he identified George C.C. as the same man(?) as in the SUBJECT LINE above????

The information is supposed to have come from a "book" that traces the Yonge's back to 1200.

I have not been able to find any hits on this information.
Have you come across anything remotely familiar???

Thank you,
Sal in AL

I am trying to locate parents of George C C Yonge who was supposedly b. 1-29-1822 (Clarke) GA s/o a Henry & Mary Ann Pirner (sp?) Yonge/Young/Younge. His parents d. ca 1833-34 and George was raised by a 1/2 brother named William Phillip Yonge in Thomaston (Upson) GA. This information was supposed to have come from a book on YONGES that goes back to the 1200'es. I have not been able to find the book or any other data to date. I would like to verify the data since George CC Yonge is a direct line ancestor.

Any advice or direction will be greatly appreciated.
Sally in AL

Re: FRANCIS YONGE WHOS DAUGHTER SARAH MARRIED WILLIAM SIMMONS

I am a descendant of Francis Yonge's daughter Harriet Peckham Yonge by his second wife Sussannah Johnson. I believe the Sarah Yonge you mention was the daughter of Francis Yonge, Jr. and his wife Sarah Wilkinson.
Francis Yonge's daughter Eliza(beth) Yonge married first a Mr. Wilkinson and later Peter Porcher. Her letters written in 1779-1780 were published as the "Letters of Eliza Wilkinson" in 1839". They give a vivid account of encounters with the British and Tories on Yonges Island during this time. I have a copy of the book.
I also have pages from the Francis Yonge family Bible. I am willing to share this with other Francis Yonge descendants.

Clayton Rhodes
Savannah, GA

The Yonges of Caynton, Edgmond, Shropshire by Edward Yonge

I have a copy of the above subject title book I picked up in an estate sale thinking it was my line. But after reading the book, it is not my line, so I would like to pass it on to a Yonges researcher. It is a hardbound book of some 236+ pages. Not indexed. The book is in good condition, cover, spine and pages all in tact, no tears, a few turned down pages which I have straighted out, and some writing in the front inside pages dating the book back to at least October 1969. The preface was written by Anthony Yonge, Victoria, British Columbia, January, 1969. There is no actual publication date or publishers page in the book. I feel it was a small private printing. Probably an out of print book. It ties this family back to King Edward I of England and a number of Magna Carta signers.

If you are interested, contact me direct at: hallmark@gvec.net.
