Children are listed with Nora.

Regards,

Gary

Re: Seeking family of Mary Ann York(e) (c1793-1877) dau of William Yorke - London?

Mary Ann Finlay is my great grandmother, and I have always been fascinated since I found her mother Mary Ann York's death certificate in the NSW death Records about 12 years ago that my mother's family believed that she died in London. My one remaining Scott aunt then when I told her about the death Certificate said to me "absolute rubbish, she died in London." My grandmother was Mabel Gertrude (May) Smith, who married Thomas Mitchell Scott of Burroway, Narromine, and who died of the Spanish flu in 1921. They had nine children. She was the youngest child of Mary Ann Finlay and Francis Smith, who owned a sheep and cattle property close to Dubbo called Camboogle. Why the Scott family did not know about the Finlays in Australia, I have no idea, but suspect it was a fairly decent family row. My email address is dugald@coomatown.com.au and if you were to send me yours outside this post, I can seend you a good deal of information. Regards Dugald Mitchell Cooma NSW Aust.

Yorke (York and Scarborough, Yorkshire)

Hello,

I'm trying to discover the parents of my great grandmother, a Constance Yorke. She was born in 1907 but I'm having no luck at all. Apparently she had brothers (no names yet) who worked as railway men, so my next port of call is to find if they worked on the Scarborough to Whitby Railway line which ran past my grandmothers house (She mentioned waiving at family who were drivers on the line). Might be a wild-goose chase, but I'm so addicted to finding out something now.

I checked the census and have found five people who had female children in York, with the surname Yorke. I was also told that her mother was German and that they were Jewellers in London.....

Any help or ideas would be appreciated.

Many thanks,
Stuart

Further helpful feedback has shown that Stanley and Dorothea had a daughter Jane born in Woolwich in 1966. Jane married David G Farthing in 2002 in Gravesend,Kent.

Also it was learned that Jeanne Storey married a David G
Johnson in Sidcup,Kent in 1960. It appears that they had a daughter Hannah Johnson born in Woolwich 1967.

I am researching descendants of Thomas Henry(Harry) Morrow born Woolwich Kent 1876. He was my grandfather's brother.
It appears likely that Harry and wife Harriett Hannah Mundy had at least1 child..Doris A Morrow born 1912. She married Sidney George Storey in 1936 and 2 of their children are Stanley 1938 and Jeanne 1940.
Stanley may have married Dorothea Yorke in 1965 in Woolwich.
Perhaps someone reading this forum will notice a link

I have quite a few YORKEs from Oundle, but could not link with the Eliza/Elizabeth YORKE you mentioned.

With your knowledge of Northants do you have an idea why many of the YORKEs were taken to Deene to be buried. There were even YORKEs from Coleshill, WAR taken there. I know of no connection to Deene and no YORKEs were born, baptised, married, resided or died there as far as I am aware.
Seeking family of Mary Ann York(e) (c1793-1877) dau of William Yorke - London?

I am trying to discover Yorke family connections of Mary Ann York(e) daughter of William York(e). Unfortunately her mother is unknown. Based on her death certificate Mary Ann would have been born around 1793 however I have been unable to find a birth record. Mary Ann married Matthew Finley on 25 April 1810 at St Dunstans, East London. Matthew was listed as a schoolmaster in Stepney Middlesex in the 1841 census and on his death certificate.

Children are Matthew Smith(b1811), Joseph Sherrard(b1813), William Yorke (b1815), Lucy Sherrard (b1817), Maria Louisa (b1819), Elizabeth Harriet(b1821), Horatio Samuel (b1824), George Frederick Augustus (b1826), Thomas Wilson (b1828) and Mary Ann (b1831). George FA is my GG Grandfather. Perhaps Sherrard may have been the maiden name of the paternal or maternal grandmother.

After Matthew died in 1847, Mary Ann immigrated to Australia in 1849 on the "Katherine Stewart Forbes" with children Thomas, George, Mary Ann and Maria Louisa. Her eldest son Matthew Smith Finley was already in Australia working with the Bank of NSW. Her son William and daughters Elizabeth and Lucy married and remained in England. Sons Horatio and Joseph travelled separately to Australia. Horatio may have returned to England as there are no death records in Australia for him.

Mary Ann lived out her final years with her daughter Mary Ann's family (married Francis Smith) on a property near Wellington NSW. Mary Ann died 1 May 1897 and is buried at Dubbo NSW.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

995 Pte James Yorke served with the 5th Dragoon Guards in the Crimean War. He was married (though his wife's name is not mentioned) as was indicated by the fact that he sent a remittance home to his wife from the Crimea. While in the Crimea, the musters indicate he was receiving 1d Good Conduct Pay. For much of the time he worked as a farrier, as noted on the muster rolls. He retired as a farrier on 26 December 1971. He was awarded the Crimean Medal with Clasps for Balaclava, Inkerman, and Sebastopol according to the Medal rolls. His medal, along with a Turkish Crimea were shown on the J. B. Hayward medal list for 1974, item 610.

My Yorkes also come from Longford in Ireland and before Longford they were in Galway. Several of them were doctors. Let me know if you think they might be the same Yorkes and you would like more information.

Re: Blott Yorke

Can't help with family information, but this may help get things off to good start.

A search of the WWI medal card index at the National Archives documentsonline gave:

Medal card of Yorke, Blott
Corps/Regiment: Royal Warwickshire Regiment;
No [none for officers only appears in records];
Rank: Quarter Master/Honorary Major

Re his medals – the Star medal would have been “issued” in 1920, if he qualified for either of the 1914 or 1914-1915 Stars, he would have also been entitled to the British War & Victory Medals. His medal card will confirm his entitlement, you can order a B&W copy from the NA, but the ones on Ancestry also show the back that sometimes shows an address; at least a starting point.

A search of the London Gazette at http://www.gazettes-online.co.uk/ for Yorke AND Warwickshire returned:

The London Gazette issue 29322 of 8 Oct 1915, page 10017 announced:

The Royal Warwickshire Regiment

Quatermaster and Honorary Major Blott Yorke resigns his commission. Dated 12 Oct 1915.

Blott Yorke [late Quatermaster and Honorary Major] to be Captain [temporary]. Dated 12 Oct 1915.

The London Gazette issue 30157 of 29 June 1917, page 6501 announced:

War Office 29 June 1917
Territorial Force
infantry

Royal Warwickshire Regt.-
The undermentioned officers relinquish their temp. rank. 30 June 1917:

Capt. [temp.] B. Yorke to be Capt., with precedence as from 12 Oct 1915, and to remain seconded. 30 June 1917.

The London Gazette issue 29954 of 20 Feb 1917, page 1782 announced:

Royal Warwickshire Regt.-

Capt. B. Yorke is seconded for duty at a Prisoners of War Camp. 9 Feb. 1917

So, the Major was an honorary rank and he was actually a Captain in the Territorial Force with the Royal Warwickshire Regiment by the war's end.

Any surviving WWI records for officers of the Territorial Force are held in document series WO374 at the National Archives, Kew.
A search of the catalogue at http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue shows only 1 record that could be his:

WO 374/77542 War Office: Officers' Services, First World War, personal files (alphabetical); Yorke, Capt. B.

The record is not available to view online, but you be able to order a copy via the National Archives’ Digital Express service, or one of their other online copying services. I can’t say if it will contain any more information than you already know.

Now if you intend to go further than establish the situation up to his death and I understand if you have a desire to contact any relatives, but you must also understand they may not be aware of his “other family” and a cold call could be distressful. If you do intend going that route, I would urge caution and I don’t know if they can help in your case, but perhaps you should consider using the Salvation Army’s Family Tracing Service, see http://www2.salvationarmy.org.uk/familytracing

York Yorke Northamptonshire

My grandfather was Frederick Joseph William Yorke-Johnson born 1888 in Hertford. His mother was Elizabeth York(e)born abt 1865 in Northampton. I have been researching this part of my family for approx 5 years and have been unable to locate a marriage certificate for them. Can anyone help with info regarding Elizabeth York(e)and her family? They appear on the 1891 census living in Hertford with their 3 children Albert Edward, Frederick JW and Annie, but not on the 1901 census or at least as a family. The boys possible appear in an institution, Annie is nowhere to be found nor is Elizabeth. Edward is possibly living with another woman by then, but this find is not confirmed.
Any suggestions for further research would be gratefully received!

CEN54

Hello, my name is Susanne York Holland from Alabama, USA. I know you posted this years ago, but I came across it and hope this info from my family history helps.

I.Sir Richard York(e) Born 1435 Goldthwaite County, York, England
Died 1498 in Goldthwaite County, York, England
Note: Life Events:
1456 – Elected Freeman of York, England
1469 – Lord Mayor of York, England
1482 – MP(?) in Staple in Calais, France
1487 – Knighted by the Royal Family
Member of Parliament for the City of York
Married Joan Mauleverer
Married Joan Whitfield
Children:
1. John York b.1470, Goldthwaite, England
2. Richard York b. 1462
3. Thomas York b. abt 1464
4. Christopher York b. abt 1466
5. William York b. abt 1468
The Yorkes were an extremely successful mercantile family from the city of York. The first Sir Richard Yorke (d. 1498) had been both mayor and M.P. for the city, and was knighted by Henry VII. The Yorkes blazed a colorful trail through history. Sir Richard's grandson was knighted by Edward VI before being thrown into the Tower by Mary Tudor (Queen Mary a.k.a. “BloodyMary”). Sir Edward Yorke repelled the Armada before circumnavigating the world with his cousin, Sir Martin Frobisher. Sir John, a staunch catholic, was implicated in the Guy Fawkes gunpowder plot. When the rebellious villagers were compelled to go to church he hired a piper to play in the churchyard, creating “such a noyse in time of praier as the minister colde not well be hearde”. The Church of ST. JOHN the Evangelist,~ near Ouse-bridge, in Micklegate, appertains to the dean and chapter of York. The Rev. James Richardson, M.A. is the curate. Sir Richard shifted his allegiance and his ornaments from the St. John, in Hungate, church to St John, in Micklegate. Sir Richard Yorke is buried in the Yorke Chantry in The Church of St. John, shown below. The steeple was blown down by a high wind in 1551, and has never been rebuilt. In consequence of the recent improvements near Ouse-bridge, the burying ground has been materially contracted, and the street made more spacious in front of the church. It is currently a pub known as “The Parish”.
Evelyn Marie-Rose Yorke Burroughs, 89, died May 1, 2001 in a Houston Hospital. She was born in Chatou, France on November 8, 1911. She came to America in 1946, where in Houston on March 27 she married Otto Burroughs who preceded her in death in 1951. She became a citizen in July 1948 and had resided in Houston and Harris County until her death. Having lived thru major catastrophic wars and skirmishes (World War I, the Spanish Civil War, World War II, Korea, Viet Nam, Desert Storm, etc.) she cannot but state at her death what her headstone will declare "Peace At Last". A widow without children, Mrs. Burroughs leaves this world with no ascendants, no descendents and so ends her family tree which she could trace back to the 1400's in Wales on her father's side. Funeral services will be held at San Jacinto Funeral Home and Cemetery 1:00 P.M. Tuesday, May 8, 2001 with Rector Tom Day of Saint Timothy's Episcopal Church officiating with private burial in San Jacinto Memorial Park. 14659 East Freeway (713) 453-7114
My Uncle on my father side is named Jack. My grandmother had him out of wedlock. It was a huge family secret until the secret returned to her house one day when he was around 20 years old. I don't know much about him. I could try to find out . I don't know if it's even the same person your looking for. My grandmother is a york. by marriage. I will find out her maiden name if you wish. They lived in Beverly, Massachusetts. I also have an aunt named Florence, but I believe her fathers name to be Ray. I could be wrong. thanks God Bless Sharon

Hi Bernard, My interest is more in the Tebbuts. I have two in my family at this stage Thomas Tebbutt b 1827 married to Lucy Hull and Elizabeth Tebbutt born abt 1774 married to William Cooper in and around the Holcot area. I know nothhing of their parents so don't know if they connect yet with the Yorke. Would love to have info to look at abt this though.
Thanks
Chris

DATA: Yorke, Lorene listed in 1929 Richmond, VA yearbook

DATA Message RE: The Marshallite, 1929 John Marshall High School yearbook (Richmond, VA).

This yearbook lists the members of the Senior class of 1929, faculty members, members of the Corps of Cadets, and many members of various clubs (not all). Unfortunately, it does not list the names of the members of the Junior, Sophomore or Freshmen classes (only officers listed for those classes). It includes the following name(s):

Yorke, Lorene

There's over 1,900 records, so I've only listed the name(s), as it appears in the yearbook in this message.

If you would like to view all of the information that I extracted from the yearbook, I have uploaded it to my freepages genealogy web site. The link to the first page of these extracts on my web site is:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~sassytazzy/family/r...

Or it can be accessed through the "General Research" link on the main page at:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~sassytazzy/index.ht...

Please note that my site contains free genealogy related data & IS NOT a "commercial" or "advertising" site. Until I can get back out & do research on my own families, my hobby is posting free genealogy related data online that may help other reseachers. I put all kinds of genealogy information on my web site (including information others send to me to share on the site), not just data about the families I am researching (therefore I can't answer questions about everyone I have listed on the site). I hope the information I've put online helps someone with their research . . .

Susan :)
Sassytazzy's Online Genealogy Research Library
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~sassytazzy/index.ht...
