Correction to Youngs Genealogy (Southold, NY) - Polly Youngs Husband and Family, p 132

Correction to Youngs Genealogy (Southold, NY) - Polly Youngs Husband and Family, p 132

Pg 132 of the "Youngs Family" by Selah Youngs, 1907, shows that Polly-7, Rufus-6, Daniel-5, Christopher-4,3, Rev John-2, Rev Christopher-1 Youngs was married to a John Aldrich and then displays a family of children, without birth dates: Mary, Jacob, John, Charles, Warren J, Helen, Adney, and Buell. There is no date of birth, marriage, or death given for her, but she is listed in a list of children of Rufus who were born in a range from 1780-1802.

(Unfortunately, even though the book was published in 1907, Google Books apparently wants to protect the income of reprinters of the book by not making the contents available) See:

http://books.google.com/books?id=RWdRtQAACAAJ&dq=Youngs+...

________________________

Further analysis shows that the John Aldrich family listed as shown above is that of her SON, John Youngs Aldrich.

What follows is an analysis of the family she (presumably) had with Jacob Aldrich (not the family shown in the Youngs Genealogy, which is that of her son, John Youngs Aldrich), if Jacob's family might be substituted here.

The larger question remaining is what documentation is there to support the fact that Mary / Polly Youngs, daughter of Rufus, was the wife of Jacob Aldrich? This researcher has not found a marriage record and the will of Rufus Youngs (see below) only mentioned sons, not daughters.
_________________________

SUMMARY OF HER FAMILY

She was born 1784 (1850 and 1860 census) in Mattituck, Southold, Suffolk, New York, USA. She married JACOB-6,5,4,3, Peter-2, George-1 Aldrich (not John) about 1808 in Mattituck. She and Jacob Aldrich had John Youngs, Deborah, Micah O, Samuel and Adney.

John Youngs Aldrich married Eleanor [Wells?], and had Mary Jane, Jacob W, John Youngs, Charles A, Warren J, and Eleanor "Helen" between 1836-1848. Note this is the list of children given in the Youngs Genealogy (except for a son named Buell), but born when Mary / Polly Youngs would have been aged 52-64. Thus illustrating the Youngs Genealogy skipped a generation when it listed the children of her son as her children.

The rest of the children of Jacob and Mary (Youngs) Aldrich appear to have stayed in Pennsylvania. Adney appears married with children in the 1850 census, then his wife appears in 1860 as a widow. She married, 2nd, Henry Hall. Michael and Samuel appear in the 1850 and 1860 census, single, and are not found (by this researcher) after that.

Her daughter, Deborah, married William H Edwards and they settled in Luzerne County, PA. They lived next door to her brother Adney Aldrich in 1850 census in Luzerne County, PA. Her family moved back to the same county that her mother and brothers were in for the 1860 and later censuses - Pike County, PA.
____________________

CENSUSES

She is found in the following censuses:

1850 Dingman, Pike, Pennsylvania, USA - Mary Aldridge, 66 yrs old, widow, with sons Michael and Samuel.

1860 Dingman, Pike, Pennsylvania, USA - Mary Aldrich, 76 yrs old, widow, with sons Michael-44, Samuel-40; grandson (son of son Adney) John-12.

http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=1850usfedcenan...

http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=1860usfedcenan...
______________________

HER FATHER'S WILL

Per Youngs Genealogy, pg 132:

"He (Rufus Youngs) was a carpenter and a cabinet maker, and resided on the North Road, Riverhead, LI. He was a devout man, and given to saying a long grace at table, during which his wife would walk around and pat their numerous children on the head to keep them quiet. His will, 16 Feb, 1828, names wife Mehetable, sons Rufus, Noah, and John."

[Does not mention any daughters]
______________________

JACOB ALDRICH 1837 WILL MENTIONS GRANDSON JOHN Y ALDRICH

Her son, John Youngs Aldrich is listed in the will of his paternal grandfather Jacob Aldrich, which is probably why he returned to Long Island, while the rest of his siblings stayed in Pennsylvania.

Abstracts of wills, recorded at Riverhead, Suffolk County, New York, Van Buren, Elizabeth R, Vol. 4 (Book E-G, 1823-1839) FHL Film 860327.

"Jacob Aldrich, of Southold, 13 Sep 1837.
Correction to Youngs Genealogy (Southold, NY) > Caleb Youngs, b 10/04/1794

Correction to Youngs Genealogy (Southold, NY) > Caleb Youngs, b 10/04/1794

On p 131 of the Youngs Family, by Selah Youngs, Jr show a Caleb Youngs, son of Daniel-5,4, Christopher-3,2, Rev John-1 Youngs, as born 04 Oct 1794, died 05 June 1822, unmarried. This Caleb Youngs is identified as number 396, without an asterisk, indicating he was not followed further in the book.

However, when one goes further in the book one finds a Caleb Youngs at number 496, pg 192, born 04 Oct 1794, died 05 June 1822, as married to Hannah Reeve on 31 Oct 1815. She married, 2nd, 04 Apr 1830, Timothy Norton.

They had Lavina, b 14 Nov 1816, who married James Smith, and Ann Maria b 16 Jun 1818.

When one looks back at where a no 496 would be as a child, one finds her at p 145 as Hannah Youngs, dau of Warren Youngs.

Therefore, it seems the entry at 496 was a typo for 396 and is placed in the wrong place in the book. Also, the indication at pg 130 that he was unmarried is not true.

This Caleb is referred to in the 1807 will of his father, Daniel Youngs, included in a following post in this forum.

I tested at SMGF and FTDNA. My results are also entered at Ancestry and Gene Tree. We haved talked before and are not a match (41/66). I do not see you in my FTDNA matches which should be expected. Are you matching system wide there, or just in a project (Young)? I forget your ancestral line. Do you have a tree online? Thanks.

I too am descended from the Youngs on Long Island, previously of Salem, Mass and Southwold, Suffolk, England. There is a huge geneallogy of the family by Selah Young in 1907. It is out of print but is on Ancestry and the net. Look up Rev. Christopher Youngs. The book goes back to their Welsh before 1066 and their Norman Ancestors. If you send me your email I can make you a guest on my Youngs tree.

EVENING POST ANNUAL, 1882
BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCHES
of the State Officers, Representatives in Congress, Governor’s Staff, and Senators and Members of the General Assembly of the State of Connecticut.
Published Annually.
Hartford, Conn.: Evening Post Association. 1882.
Pg. 177

THOMAS J. YOUNGS, Representative for Union, Tolland County:

Of Union, like a large part of the representatives of his county, traces his descent back to the early settlers of the country. The family was originally established on Long Island, and his grandfather, after serving three years in the Revolutionary war, removed to Farmington, Conn. Thomas J. Youngs was born there in 1830, and is now about 51 years of age. He has at different times followed teaching, lumbering, and farming, and has been chosen justice of the peace, assessor for seven consecutive years, and to various other town offices. He served as surgeon’s steward on a gunboat on the Mississippi during a considerable portion of the war, and was at Fort Pillow, Memphis, and Vicksburg. In politics he is a Democrat.

I am looking for other researchers who may have a connection to PETER M. YOUNGS, born about 1815 in New York state. I am not certain of his exact origin, but know that he lived for a time with his family in Dutchess County (at least in the 1840s?), before later moving to Broome County.

Peter Youngs was married to CORDELIA. I know of these children so far:

WILLIAM H. YOUNGS (born Jan 1843, Poughkeepsie, Dutchess, NY)
MINARD YOUNGS (born abt 1847, New York state)
MARY J. YOUNGS (born abt 1851, NY)
CORDELIA YOUNGS (born abt 1854, NY)
HANNAH YOUNGS (born abt 1859, NY)

Peter Youngs is my earliest known Youngs ancestor. He and his son William are my direct ancestor. I have more information on this line from William on down for anyone who may have family that intersects.

My G-Grandfather James T Young, b 1 Sep 1847 New Jersey, had listed on his death certificate parents of John Young and Mary Skidmore, both born in New Jersey. I've found in 1850 a John YoungS married to a Mary and with a 3 year old James, all living in New Jersey. I think that may be them and James simply dropped off the ending 's' but I can't find confirmation anywhere. If anyone could help me out here it would dramatically increase their chances of making it onto my Christmas card list! :)

Re: Jeremiah Youngs (b. 1840 NY) father of Menzo Youngs (1875), Jeremiah's wife and mother of Menzo is Mary Smith.

Hello,

Here is the information you seek:

Menzo/Menso Youngs is the son of Jeremiah/Jere Youngs and Mary Smith. Menzo was born in NY ca 1875-76, his father, Jeremiah Youngs was born ca 1840 in NY, also.

Menzo married Josephine Bockman, daughter of Charles Bachman and Frances Hodges.

Menzo Youngs was married Nov. 29th, 1896 in Calhoun County, MI, at home of M. Simonds, he was a farmer, age 21. Witnesses were recorded as Miss Louis (Louise?) Simonds and Miss Rohoda Simonds. It may be that it was Mr. LOUIS SIMONDS, this should be investigated.

They were married by M. Simonds, so most likely the Minister or J.P.'s son & daughter-in-law or daughters were the witnesses.

I found this on Family Search Pilot where you can download FREE marriages in MI.

Menzo Youngs marriage page says he married Josie "James" parents are listed as Charles Bockman and Frances Hodges, odd, perhaps this is her second marriage, but she is only 21 years old, but stranger things have happened, note witnesses are Miss Louis Simonds, or is it Mr. Louis Simonds and Rhoda Simonds.

Josephine Bockman was born April 27, 1873 per her MI birth record and parents listed as Charles Bachman and Frances Hodges.

Best wishes,
Marilyn

The Long Island Young's families came via Salem, Mass and Southwold England. I have a huge tree for the family. Where your Mary fits, I'm not sure, but there is a huge Genealogy written by a Selah Yonges (one of many alt. spellings) that may have your Mary. It is out of print but findable on line. Let me know if you are interested and I can send you some links

Re: Catherine Keech and George Youngs at Verona, Oneida County, NYS

I spent the whole day yesterday working on the Barber family who belongs to Patience Barber of Oneida County- I will post another message in a bit here about what I found but just wanted to clarify a couple of things I said in last message where I was delusional: I SAID-

"I think that Lydia Maria Keech's mother was a woman named Patience who may have also been married to a Mr. BARBER and had Barber children who were also living in Verona/Oneida County, NYS." Please disregard this!!!

And I said later in same message:

"I see posts that a woman named "Patience Leach" was married to a Russell Barber, could this be same family line? If so, Patience's last name may have been Keech or Keach not Leach- what is the source of her surname being "Leach"? And if this is the case, that may not have been her maiden name at all, but the name of her (second?) husband James Keech. If I am on right track with all of this, I do have her maiden name in my files."

Patience Barber was nee Keech but because she shows up living with some married Keech kids in Oneida County, I thought she was the same woman who married James Keech of Vermont as his first wife. I have one piece of evidence that says the first wife of same James Keech was a woman named Patience.

However, they are NOT the same women of course because James and Patience/Mrs. Barber were brother and sister. Patience Barber was living with a married NIECE (Lydia Maria Keech married to Jacob Yerdon or Yerton, 1870 Verona in Oneida County).

More on all of this in yet another upcoming post.

Nora in Alberta

Catherine Keech and George Youngs at Verona, Oneida County, NYS

I have a Jacon Yerdon or Yerton in my files born about 1819-1820, was still alive in 1880 at Verona, Oneida County, NYS. I believe he was twice married, and both times to Keech women- first wife Lydia Maria Keech by whom he had at least ten children all born in NYS, some possibly in Madison County but the rest in Oneida County.

I think that Lydia must have died about 1873-1880 and Jacob then re-married to Catherine Keech who was Lydia's half sister. Catherine Keech had been first married to a George YOUNGS and had children with George some of whom show up on the 1880 census at Verona, Oneida County in Yerdon/Yerton home. I THINK that Catherine Keech was the daughter of James Keech and Mary Jane Raymond who lived in Vermont and then in Oneida County, she being his second wife. Catherine Keech YOUNGS and Jacob Yerden/Yerton had at least one son Burton Yerton/Yerdon born about 1880.

I think that Lydia Maria Keech's mother was a woman named PATIENCE who may have also been married to a Mr. BARBER and had Barber children who were also living in Verona/Oneida County, NYS.

I am JUST starting to unravel this mystery but found PATIENCE (Barber) in Verona in 1850 with E. R. Barber- was he her son? From cem listing I see he was Elijah Barber married to a Nancy Ann; Elijah died August 1867, Nancy Ann died 1858; from 1850 census they had children Jerusha, Joseph and Herbert Barber. Elijah is buried same place as Robinson K. Barber 1819-1856- what does that "K" stand for, any chance "Keech"?

I have not yet looked for PATIENCE in 1860 but in 1870 she is living with Jacob Yerdon/Yerton and his first wife Lydia Maria (nee Keech) at Verona, Oneida County.

I see posts that a woman named "PATIENCE Leach" was married to a Russell Barber, could this be same family line? If so, Patience's last name may have been Keech or Keach not Leach- what is the source of her surname being "Leach"? And if this is the case, that may not have been her maiden name at all, but the name of her (second?) husband James Keech. If I am on right track with all of this, I do have her maiden name in my files.

I do need help with this, so if any of these names sound familiar to anyone, if anyone has worked on Oneida County Barber families, please post here or write to me directly. Patience may have been born in Vermont.

Thanks from Nora
Harvey and his first wife were divorced by 1891 when he remarried to my gr.gr.aunt in Markham, Ontario. Harvey spent the rest of his life in Toronto, Ontario. I have just learned that Harvey's first wife remarried to Harvey's brother William and they moved to the Philipines.

Ancestry's "One World Tree" Has Thomas b. 1645 in Salem, MA d. 1720 Oyster Ponds, Long Is. m. Rebecca abt. 1667. She being b. 1653 in Salem and d. Oyster Ponds ?. I am decended from Thomas' son Richard by his second wife Eliz. Harcourt.
OWT lists Thomas as having a sister Mary b. abt 1645; a little to early I think for your Mary. Thomas, however, had five brothers (Joseph, John, Christopher, Giddeon & Samuel), one of whom would have been the right age to father your Mary. I have not followed these lines, but would refer you to Ancestry and Selah Youngs' Book " Rev. Christopher Youngs: His Ancesters in England and Decendents in America" Pub. in 1907,it is out of print, but findable, used, on the internet. It is totally amazing for our family.

You probably already know this after all this time has passed, but just in case: there was a Darius YOUNGS who was the child of Freeborn YOUNG(s) and his wife Olive [BENNETT?]. He was born in Cortland Co., NY. Freeborn was born in RI, and Olive in CT.

I believe this to be the same Darius YOUNG(s):
1880 census Armada, Macomb Co., MI, Roll#592, p.289B:
Darius YOUNGS b. ca 1828 (age 52) NJ[sic], F b. NJ[sic], M b. CT

I am trying to see if my ancestor, Eunice YOUNG(s) is also a child of Freeborn and Olive (she was born ca 1812 in Cortland Co., NY, and, according to the 1880 census, her Father b. RI and Mother b. CT). She married a PERRY (Ely or David?) ca 1835 in Cortland Co., NY.

I have reasonable circumstantial evidence that my ancestral surname is Youngs rather than Young. I recently obtained my DNA test results and have found no close matches in any of the public databases. The name Young is very common, Youngs less so. This may indicate that my theory of a name change is correct. Is there anyone out there with the Youngs surname that has been tested and would like to exchange results? If so, contact me directly by email. Thanks in advance.
