Hi "Chuck"!

The branch of the Zacharias (actually Zacharyasz was the full surname but was shortened sometime around 1900-1910) family that I am connected to settled in Bay City in the late 1800's and dispersed from there in the 1900's and 1910's. Just in the beginning stages of trying to locate some distant cousins and trying to figure out who all of the first generation American children survived into adulthood and had children. I have a few census records available on the family line, but not everything. I kinda get a little stuck after 1910. I took a trip out to Bay City to do some research in 2009 and did find a few family graves at one of the cemeteries there. Have collected some pictures. Stanley Zacharyasz was the immigrating patriarch of this particular line and married Victoria Baranowski. I have a photo of their gravestone marker. Victoria was the daughter of Lawrence Baranowski who was the immigrating patriarch for my Baranowski family line, so this entire branch of the Zacharias family falls into the greater part of the distant cousins of the Baranowski family line from Bay City for me due to Victoria's marriage...

I also have a second cousin on the Baranowski side of the family who married one of Stanley & Victoria's granddaughters, so I'm doubly related to this particular Zacharias line.

If you believe that we might be related, then please feel free to e-mail me personally. I am really hoping to dig more deeply into this family line and need some help to further along my research efforts, but I can still pass some information along too as I also have limited information available in a Baranowski family archive. I don't have an active ancestry.com account at this time, so I won't be able to write any response back if you try to contact me through Ancestry. Please e-mail me at my private address to continue communications. Hope to hear from you sometime soon. Thanks!

Everett Baranowski
MaestroBaran@aol.com

Let me know how the facts fit. If they do, I'll give you everything I have. Bremer County Iowa was home to a large Indian Reservation in the latter part of the 1800's. The Indians were 'bought out' and removed to another reservation. Of course, some stayed back, but not many. My kid memory tells me they were removed to MN, but that could be totally wrong. The family story is that William and his wife moved to be with 'her people' because they felt they would be treated better. My Grandpa, Herman J. Zacharias was close in age to Willie.....the loss of contact with Willie and his wife always bothered my Grandparents. William's parents were Martin and Caroline Zacharias. I'll be anxiously awaiting to hear from you! I've been searching for a LONG time!

Family story in brief: This takes place in or near Bremer County Iowa. My grandfather's brother married an American Indian woman....early 1900's?? His name was William Zacharias, son of Martin Zacharias. The story is that the Zacharias family had trouble accepting this marriage and that William "Willie" took of with his bride and was never heard from again. Willie was born approx. 1890. Please contact me if this fits!

Sorry for the late reply. I actually just came back from Crete. If your grandmother's last name is Zacharias, and she came from Crete, then we're related, no questions asked. Your grandmother might be the siter of my grandfather Manouso, who knows. There are not multiple Zacharias lineages on Crete, so if your information is correct, then your grandmother is from Annopolis, Sfakia on Crete, because that's where the Zacharias' on Crete came from.

My husband's grandfather, James Elli ZACHARIAS came to South Africa from Greece. I know they lived in/on Galixidi as I have a letter written by the mayor but I am not sure where he was born, it could have been there too. However I am really struggling with the Zacharias family history. James Elli's father was Elias Zacharias. So it is quite possible your Zacharias' came from another area of Greece. Sadly I have no family able to speak or communicate in Greek which restricts me as well. All the best in your search.

My parents are both from Crete, Greece, and our last name coincidentally is Zacharias. I don't know if there is a relation, but my father was born in 1935, which would probably make him close in age to your father. My dad was also, coincidentally a merchant marine in the 60s, but that's not related to this topic. I'll post your inquiry to him this weekend and see what he says.

Considering this was posted in 2000, I doubt anybody who cares will read this reply. My parents are both from Sfakia, Crete. The overhwhelming majority of Cretans have last names ending in the suffix "akis." Our last name, however, is just Zacharias with no akis at the end. My father thinks that our familly must have migrated to Crete from another area of Greece. So, I suppose it's possible that we could be related. I'm visiting my uncle there this Summer, so, I'll definitely ask if we have any distant relatives in Athens.

Not sure that it helps too much, but I am a descendant of Michael's brother Daniel Zacharias. Their father Christoper was born in 1787 in Hamilton, Northampton County, Pennsylvania to a John Christopher Zacharias who was born in 1766 in Hamilton, Northampton County, Pennsylvania. I have not been able to locate the name of John Christopher Zacharias' wife, however.

Nancy Van Horn was born 06 February 1793 in Hamilton, Northampton County, Pennsylvania to Benjamin and Nancy (YOUNG) Van Horn. She married Christoper Zacharias 24
December 1813. Nancy had 4 brothers and 2 sisters.

Benjamin Van Horn was born 14 July 1759 in Tinicum Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania to Bernard Van Horn and Prentice Hellings. He married Nancy Young in 1785. Nancy Young was born in 1763 in Hamilton Township, Monroe County, Pennsylvania to Nickolas Young and Cornelia Dickinson

Josef and Maria Zacharias

My maternal grandparents were Josef and Maria Zacharias of Lugatz (Locavek), Slovenia. They had six children. During WWII the two eldest boys were in the German army. That left my grandfather, the three girls and the youngest boy at home to run the farm. I was a baby. At the end of WWII, my grandfather was taken away, never to be seen again. Later we discovered he'd been murdered. My grandmother and the children were dragged from their home and put in a concentration camp, where my grandmother died. The children, eventually, all escaped the camps into Austria. My oldest uncle had married a German woman in Darmstadt and returned to live there. My other uncle married a woman near Graz who had a farm. One aunt married and moved to Australia, my mother married again (my father went to war and never returned) and moved to Canada. My youngest uncle moved to the USA.

Last year I was in Slovenia, having never been there since the age of 2. I even went to the camp that once was "home". It was almost surreal. The people were lovely, friendly, prosperous. The countryside was lush with vineyards as far as the eye could see. It was hard to comprehend that such atrocities could have occurred in such a beautiful country.

When will we ever learn?

Thanks for replying. This Abraham Zacharias that I am looking for married Katharina Dyck, who was born 1885, so I presume he would be born close to 1885, and Katharina's first husband died in 1926, so again I presume that she would have married Abraham Zacharias after 1926. Thanks for any other info that you can find.
Mary

Hi Mary, I will try to trace the Zacharias family as I want the children and generations. Mine starts with Danial Zacharias b Germany d 1770 Frederick Co.Maryland and notes say he married 1774---Lititz,Lancaster Co Pa. A note says he was a perminate resident?-York Co Pa and Pipe Creek,Frederick Co. Maryland. I have him as married to Elizabeth (also Maria Elizabeth) Hauck who was born 1720.

You now have me interested in lining out the generations thus I may well get to you and let you know if I find Abraham Zacharias. I have to thank my cousins Lynne & Jon Livsey for doing the work and sharing with me..lest I not give proper credit. I would be interested in any other scraps if information you may have. Oh, if this does turn out to be an ancester- Elizabeth Hauck is of the family also known as Houck, a well respected family.
Have a fine New Year...thank you Mary and indeed I am willing to work with you on this.

Thank you and in my research I will keep an eye our. I could be wrong but I think Zacharias may be a Jewish/convert to christianity family...I have lines into the 1700's and connections with a family named Wolf as well. Cannot seem to get farther back than that. The Zacharias family at that time was christian.
Notes such as you sent me are valuable as one never knows when they will tie in with another lead of research. If you find out more about earlier Zacharias family history keep me posted...thank you once again for responding and in closing I will indeed keep and eye out for info for you..have a nice day

Zacharias Zimmerman Jewish California

I am searching for information about descendents of Morris Zacharias (b. 1837, Prussia) who married Delia Zimmerman (b.1847, Germany). Delia is the daughter of Johannah and Charles Zimmerman who immigrated to US, settling in CA before 1860 census. I am descended from Delia's brother.

Verbal family history tells us that Delia, Johannah and sister Matilda (married name Roeder) returned to San Francisco leaving Chas and Ferdinand in Petaluma, CA. Also that Delia married a Jewish man (and burial records show this to be true).

Delia and Morris had at least three children: Charles, Samuel and Amelia all born in California. Amelia married Henry Kallman and had at least 2 sons Carl and Stanley.

Hi, if you have Daniel Zacharias married to Elizabeth Hauck then indeed we share the same ancestor...George Danial is I think Danial Jr. and is definately a son of Daniel and Elizabeth. My genealogical records are too solid for this to be anyother way and all of the places etc match. You have to remember that immigrants moved around a good bit and also that it is not uncommon to in some instances ie a formal document--to put ones Christening name in front of their regular name, just depended on the person. If you have Daniel and Elizabeth you mentioned in your line...let me know what child you are descended from and I will see what I can dig up...it would be good to get info on all of their children to see the connections.
What have you used for your research? It might help me to help you....its nice to have someone to do this with..I have reason to beleive that Danial had siblings and other family who came over at different times...I think the records of this are in Elsoff Germany..I may be able to get a few...those who we do not think related may well be related back in Elsoff...this may explain the confusions so we should sort that out. My instincts are that ALL are related via their relationship in Germany before leaving.
In closing--if you are descended from Danial and Elizabeth we are clearly related...I have given you a good bit of info...need your help back if I am to work with you on this, at least let me know your connections into the early 1800's if possible. My descendancy from Danial and Elizabeth Hauck (also Houck later) is rock solid with out question. Thanking you in advance for sharing some of what you have...I am certain that in time I can help you but I do need a one or two generation connection to you from Daniel and Elizabeth...I think we can both enjoy this project and also just based on what we have shared so far we are much more likly to have other descendants have missing peices of information etc. There should be information in Harford County, Carol County, Frederick County and in Pennsylvania York County, Philadelphia county and a few more since this family covers all of these areas and or has descendants in these counties. I have not written to them due to info I have but incase you need leads these may help you.Have a great day...I am from a very old colonial family on both sides, with other lines of family coming from most of these same areas...go back to about 1620 and also had one arrive with William Penn. The history you will learn can be even more interesting than the actual ancestors..like why they came, how did they get settled etc. Did you know that there were Indians attacking within 50 miles of Philadelphia in 1750...these settlers were up against a lot. I have records of Indian attacks on ancestors..you never know what you will stumble on. Looking forward to hearing from you.

Very nice to get your speedy reply. There is an etiquette in the area of Genealogy. I have several cousins who are genealogists, well respected and professional. The etiquette being to at least give credit to the person who did the work...this was done by Lynne Livezey, husband Jon and a bit by myself P.W.Remare. I will give you my line and we can perhaps see how you fit in which I sense we will.

Going back as far as possible then into the Zacharias line ok?Oh, interestingly in Elsoff Germany there is a marriage of Nicholaus Zacharias 1591 to Florentine Althaus in Wunderthauen Germany--near the time of the Inquisition which makes on wonder if he or his predecessors were hidden Jews...hmmm..if true would have to check Vatican Records or rrecords of conversions to Christianity.
Here goes..and I am decended from the Zacarias/Eberhardt line thus will go from there back...then put in what ever I have in context if possible plus a few notes floating around not totally charted out.
1.-Johan George Eberhardt b 11 Aug 1745 Germantown, Philadelphia County PA. He died in Manchester(now Carrol Co MD) pr resident Manchester, bur Jersulem Luthern ,Bachmans Valley----his wife was Eva Elisabetha Zacharias b 12/13 Feb Baltimore Co Md, died 12 July 1830 Baltimore Co-burried Jerusalem Luthern..

Moving back a generation....Johan G Eberhardt was the son of Paulus Eberhardt b Palantinate died Baltimore Co.Md--he was the immigrant of this line who arrived on 20 oct 1740 aboard the ship The Phoenix to Philadelphia.

Eva Elisabetha Zacharis was the daughter of Daniel Zacharias
born in Germany died Oct 1770 Frederick Co. Md and married 1774 Lititz, Lancaster county PA-he was a perminate resident of York Co PA and Pipe Creek, Frederick Co Md- he arrived Philadelphia 26 Sept 1737 on The Saint Andrew out of
Rotterdam. Danial's wife-mother of Eva was Maria Elisabeth
Hauck( I need to let you know that Houck is used as well as a spelling) She was born Feb 27, 1752...I can go back farther on the Eberhardt line to Hans Wolf 1629 Germany.

Now, chart that out and lets get back to Zacharias. First I hhave Daniel the immigrant mentioned above who came on the
St Andrew ship refered to also as The St Andrew Galley. He is mentioned in records from the village of El
soff,Westphalia province,Wittenstein Germany.

It seems that others of the Zacharias family also came.
Look at Genealogy.com-Zacharias Family Genealogy forum,
posted by Alice Luckhardt ID 4061...it has references to
Church records from Elsoff. We know from this that Danial the immigrant indeed was there, and had Daniel Jr who was baptised 1780, 23 April Lehigh Co Pa. George Daniel Zacharias had a sister Eva Elizabeth who married George Everhart Sr of Carrol county...Eva Elizabeth and married
George Everhardt aka Johan Georg Eberhardt (spelling change is recorded. Now we know at least that Eva Elizabeth or
Maria Elizabeth were the same person (remember some people
aat times used their confirmation names as well-non the less she married Eberhardt and had a brother George Daniel ZZacharias. From what I understand George Daniel Zacharias' will list the names of all of his children which I will try to get. Sarah Kloop who married Daniel in Manheim Township Pa may indicate that Daniel Zacharias was married twice. Sarah Kloops father immigrated in 1737, the same year as Daniel and in Philadelphia the same city. The Kloop material is from Biographies from Historical and Biographical Annals by Morton, a book which I will guess could be seen on internet or from a library or historical society in or around Muhlenberg...I do not know if there were any children of this marriage.
Question are you descended from the Zacharias/Hauck marriage? if so what was your ancestors name and or children. My next generation down, son of the above marriage was David Everhart b ca 1774 Baltimore Co Md and died ca 1812 Rockcastle Ky murdered by Mr Jones. This David
married Catherine Hovis and had my ancestress Mary M.Everhart. I know that there are siblings in all of this which we can endeavor to find.
I have the will of George Everhart Sr..mentioning all of his children and interestingly leaves money to his grand daughter, Elizabeth wife of Henry Houck. Interesting, also the Houck family of Baltimore and My Lady's Manor come from Frederick and to my best knowledge are the same Hauck/Houck family.
Your turn, what bits and peices do you have so far?? I hope this is of help to you. I will see if I can get the list of childeren of George Daniel Zacharias if I can locate the will. Their names may help, and or some of their descendents may have peices to the puzzel
Internet is amazing. to get a response 10 years after I post a message..wonderful!
Anyway, I am fascinated with your notes, but can't figure out how to reconcile them with my notes. I have found records of various Daniel Zachariases in Southeastern PA, but have trouble connecting the dots -- is the Daniel married in one place the same Daniel who died somewhere else? that sort of thing. I do have a Daniel Zacharias married to an Elizabeth Hauck, but no info about their children or her parents. I also have a record of 3 births (ca 1747-55) to a Daniel Zacharias in York, PA, but no record of the mother... But, most importantly, the Daniel Zacharias of Muhlenberg Twp, PA you mention is presumably the line I know a lot about. I don't have a record of him being married to a Sarah Kloop, however.
I don't understand about your Daniel Jr having a brother George Danial Zacharias whose sister married George Everhart Sr.. Was she also a sister to the Daniel Jr? What was her name? If we can connect your Daniel Jr to my line, then indeed, we are cousins

Hi,you mention Wittenstein- the Zacharias family is from the village of Elsoff,Wittenstein,Westphalia-Germany. In 1591 a woman named Florentine Althaus in Wunderthausen married Nicholas Zacharias born in Elsoff. My notes- Danial Zacharias (later refered to as Sr.) arrived in Philadelphia 26 Sept on the St.Andrew Galley out of Rotterdam from the Rhein-he died 1770 Frederick Md.and Married Maria Elizabeth Hauck (later Houck) daughter of Bernard Hauck d 1762 Manheim Twp York Co Pa. Son, Danial Jr baptised Apr, 23,1780 at Egypt Reformed Church Lehigh Co Pa. An Andrew J Kloop immigrated 1737 with two brothers John and Peter and a sister Sarah who married Daniel Zacharias if Muhlenberg Township Pa. Daniel Jr also had a brother George Danial Zacharias whose sister married George Everhart Sr of Carrol County md, one of my ancestors...I too have had the Jewish question in mind. The 1500's would have been a time when Jews were fleeing the inquisition. It would be interesting to know who Nicholaus father was. Many records are in the Elsoff Church records...hope that this helps...I have no doubt that we are cousins...

Any help would be greatly welcomed.

Nancy & Christopher are my grt, grt, grt grandparents. I am looking for anyone who may have any information on them or any of the other names listed in this post. I was told that Nancy's parents were Benjamin Van Horn & Nancy Young, but can not find any documention, ie, census records or public records. I don't know who Christopher Zacharias parents were. I believe that they may have lived in PA possibly in the Luzerne, Monroe or Bucks Counties.

My grt, grt granfather was Michael Zacharias (b-1814) s/o Christopher & Nancy Van Horn. He married Hannah Harriet Werkheiser. He had 3 brothers that I know of, George, Samuel and Daniel. I do not have any other information on the brothers & very little on Micheal. My grt grandfather was Joshua Zacharias (b-1855/PA) who married Mary Alice Woodling. My grandfather was Archie Zacharias (b-1884/PA) & married Nora Margaret Irwin or Erwin. I have found PA census with Archie & Joshua listed. My father, Merle, was also born in PA in 1908. Archie moved his family to Idaho after 1911.

I suppose I still am. I don't think I have picked up anything on this line since my post of 15-April-2002.

I didn't ever see the reply of i.beam six year ago! Is he or she still out there? Since I haven't looked at the line in a while, I have no burning questions on the top of my head, but perhaps I could match my info with someone else.

Chuck
