Hi William,
It has been years since you and i have communicated. My gr gr grandfather was Henry Zebedee Dell. You and I did a lot of research years ago. I was wondering if you have dicovered anything since then. I know we got to a dead end but thought I would check in with you. I had a great time working and making discoveries with you! I know I probably will never know anything about Henry's father but hopefully I can find out more information about his mother and family.
I now have a picture of Henry that I can send if you don't have it.
Hope to talk to you,
Patti Morrison
patti0699@chartermi.net

Zebedee Connection

Dear Victor

I am researching my family tree "Rawlins". Mary Ann Longman was my great, great, great grandmother. Mary Ann Harding married Isaac Rawlins in 1835, They had five children as far as I can find out. Isaac died in 1847 and Mary in 1849 married Francis Hawkins who was a widower and who had a son James. Francis and Mary Ann had three children, Robert b 1850, Elizabeth b 1852 and Alice b 1856. Francis died and then in 1861 Mary Ann married John Longman.

I saw your Zebedee family tree information on Ancestry and that Alice had the surname of Longman. Did John Longman adopt her or did she just take his name seeing as she was quite young when her father died?

Thank you for any assistance you are able to give me relating to Alice.

Pam Rawlins

I think I have found your Mary Ann Zebedee - I have a death record for 1863 for her in the third quarter, at Newton Abbott, Devon. I found this while doing further research on my Mary Ann Zebedee who I am delighted to report has appeared with a family that I have been able to trace back a few generations.

Thanks for your reply. The only Zebedee I have in my records is 'my' Mary Ann Zebedee - my great-great-grandmother, who became a Bailey in 1869. I have no idea of her parents' names, nor of any of her siblings. I only know that she was born in West Parley, Dorset.

I think it is unlikely that there is any connection. Pity - "34 years in bed" sounds like an interesting story.

Thanks again.

P

Hi,

We have come across a bible, in the front of which is written:
'Mary Ann Zebedee from R.M. Binning, October 11th 1859.'

In the back is stated:
'Elizabeth Sanders (my Grandmother) given to her by her Aunt Mary Ann Zebedee who departed this life on the 22nd July 1863 after 34 years in bed.'

Does this match up with any of your research?

Hope your search is going well, please respond if you have any questions.

The Sanders family lived in Stokeinteignhead in Devon.

Kind regards

My great great grandfather, James Bailey (b. abt 1841 Wiltshire) married Mary Ann Zebedee (b. abt 1844 West Parley, Dorset) in about 1869, Wimborne, Dorset.

This is the only occurrence of the name Zebedee in my tree so far and I would like to pursue it further. I have found one birth record for a Mary Ann Davis Zebedee (b. 1845 Wimborne, Dorset) but am not sure if it is the same person.

It is such an unusual name - it is frustrating that I can find no-one from her family at all.

Any pointers gratefully received.

In England they used to give children names out of the Bible. John Zebedee that married Fanny Dale was in an orphanage in England as a child. His son was my grandfather's grandfather. His sons were sent to an orphanage in the area of Belleville,Ontario after their parents died. I believe it was in Pointe Anne but it burnt up years ago with alot of the records. My cousins have done a lot of research on the geneology though.

Fanny also died in 1868 (abour four months after John). James and Henry left England for Canada. I am not in any need of information regarding John after his marriage to Fanny, it's just the stuff prior to that.

I know very little (if anything) about Mary, other than her birth place and potential year of birth.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
William Zebedee

Hi, How far back does the Zebedee name go in Britain?

I have always wondered where such a biblical name got it's start (it was my mother's maiden name). We've had some people tell us it was Lebanese! As well, someone said it could have been chosen as a religious last name during the Reformation. Have you found out anything conclusive?

Thanks.

Hello David, Thank you for answering my query re the Zebedee family. My interest is because Emma Still who married Herbert Zebedee in 1894 was the sister of Helen[Nellie]Still who was my father-in-laws first wife.

The 1901 census has Herbert 30 and Emma 32 and son Harry 1 living D Block, Assington Buildings, Marylebone. Living in F Block was Herbert`s father Thomas 63 widower and son Horace W 18.

Thomas and his wife Jessie had other children as well as Herbert and Horace. Jessie Eliz, Beatrice and Alice.

Helen who married Arthur Frank Frost in 1914 was the daughter of Charles and Margaret Still nee Wynn. In 1901 they were living at 4 Johns Yard Marylebone. Charles was a greengrocer.

Helen and Arthur Frost had 3 sons from their marriage, who would be half brothers to my husband. But as we didn`t know about his first marriage until quite recently, it came as a bit of a shock. Apart from the 3 birth certificates we have never been able to trace the 3 sons.

Please get back to me if there is anything else I can tell you, or if you find any further information.

Regards. Pat Frost.

Hello,

I have just started researching my family tree and am struggling to get exact dates but I believe that Emma Zebedee (nee Still) was my great grandmother. I believe she remarried my great grandfather Arthur Maclaren and they had my grandfather, Arthur Ernest Maclaren in 1910. I think she also had a son by Herbert Zebedee called Albert Zebedee who I met in the 1980's. The only other info I have on Albert was that he was a soldier in the Middlesex Regiment. I can remember my Grandfather telling me that Emma had had a shop or her own business(?) and that the Still family were something to do with the catering equpment company of the same name that was based in Hastings. If any of this makes sense, please drop me a line,
Kind regards
David Smith

Zebedee

Hi Victor - I'm doing some research on the Rubery family as of yesterday I didn't know I had one. However today I have discovered that a Lilian Gwendoline Emma Zebedee married James Sidney Rubery in Calne Wiltshire circa 1921 and had 2 daughters called Doreen & Patricia. If it's not to much trouble - could you check to see if their names appears on any of your research. Grateful for any help here - if there is a connection I'll tell you why it has been so hard for me to trace my family....

Many thanks for your trouble
Regards
Sally Day

My great great grandfather was Henry Zebedee. Fanny Dale was his mother's name but I am not sure that Henry is John's son. Henry was born 1854 in Southhampton (per death certificate) but the 1861 census states Fordingbridge. When Henry moved to Belleville Ontario he changed his name to Dell. I'm not sure of the details but he keep Zebedee as his middle name. I would appreciate any information you might have.
Thanks,
Patti Morrison

Myra..
John Zebedee married Fanny Dale in Fordingbridge, Hampshire England during the 3rd quarter of 1855. Their eldest son James born on 4 Feb 1857 came to Canada and settled in Belleville Ontario sometime after the 1871 census. He married Margaret Burton 20 June 1878 in Belleville. If you are connected to this family I should like to hear from you!

I have read some of the posts from everyone. I understand that there are some problems with the Zebedee information on my website (http://www.albedo.net/~skyra/zebedee/index.html) and that some of you have even sent me some corrections, which I have misplaced over the years.

I am in the process updating the information, because of some of the information that I've been receiving Pat.

I realize that the page hasn't been update in a very long time, but I've just not been able to find the energy to update it. Now I have it.

So, if you have any changes, please email them to me at skyra@albedo.net.

Thanks and,

Peace Through Solidarity
William Zebedee

Inaccuracies on Zebedee site (he's my cousin's son)

Thanks for the note about the Zebedee site. I'm not particularly sure about the accuracy of all of this information. I'm a direct relation to the Zebedees mentioned in this site (my mother is Betty Jean - grandaughter of the Zebedee who came over from England as a boy with his brother to the Marchmont homes). The man who posts the Zebedee site is my cousin's son. He has some gross inaccuracies and some huge omissions relating to my family tree that I am directly aware of. My Aunt Margaret (my mom's sister) and cousin Carole (My cousin William Zebedee II's sister) who are mentioned on the site was not happy with him posting this information since there were inaccuracies and wanted him to correct the information before he put it on line. But, this was at least 2 years ago, and he has not. So....although I assume some of the information on the site is correct, I find it difficult to know what to believe since things that are easily verifiable are documented incorrectly and William has been told, and doesn't seem to care to remedy the situation.

Zebedees from Southampton area/What the name might mean?

Hi, I'm not sure exactly where "my Zebedees" came
from - I know that they lived in Southampton for
a while - John Zebedee was married to Fanny Dale, I believe.

What I was mostly curious about is if you happen to know
where the name comes from. I know that there is a Zebedee
in the bible, so it has been suggested to me that maybe
the Zebedees took on the name being particularly religious.
But then I had a man from Lebanon tell me it was Lebanese!

Now how that would be, I don't know?

Do you have any ideas?

Hi Daphne,
I would appreciate any information that you might find from your cousin(s). This could be a possible match. I did find my great great grandfathers death certificate and it states his birthdate was December 4, 1854, born in Southampton. Our records from Canada, show him as Henry Zebedee Dell but I have been told that his birthname was Hoag Zebedee. At this time I am trying to locate his birth certificate but don't know if that will be possible.
Thank you for your effort in helping me locate information on my great great grandfather.
Patti

Jackie, how wonderful it was to hear from you. Henry (Hoag) Zebedee has been difficult to find anything on. I don't have much addition information but have located his death certificate. According to that he was born in South Hampton, England and was 84 years old when he died. His birthdate was December 4, 1854 per death certificate. Unfortunately, his death certificate states unknown for both parents name.
Is South Hampton near Dorset?
According to family stories he was left in England around the age of 10 and his family moved to a unknown place. Sounds like he might have been the oldest child. He immigrated to Canada but I don't know if he changed his name before or after immigration.
Any information you could find would be helpful and exciting.
I have also changed my e-mail address. It is now Patti0699@home.com.
Thanks for helping in my search.
Patti Morrison

I am looking for information on my great great grandfather Henry Dell. He was adopted and I know his last name was Zebedee and from information I have gotten off the Dell site his first name was Hoag. Also, from that same person his birthdate was 2/4/1854 in England. From the stories of my grandmother she said that his family was starving and when they moved it was decided they could not afford him so he was left (around the age of 10.) She said he fell asleep on a teacher's doorstep. When she found him she took him in. When she decided immigrate she took him with her. I know they ended up in Canada but I am not sure if Canada was the point of entry.
Can you make a connection?
Thanks,
Patti
