I have not located him in the 1860 census. His father, William, m2:(1857) Christine E. BLAINE. I am looking for 1860 ZEEKs in order to locate the missing 1860 BLAINEs. My thought is that Darwin ZEEK might be living near the BLAINEs in 1860. Possibly (as was common) children are listed with the head-of-household (step-father?) surname. Handwriting (SPELLING!!) and photo-quality is just awful in some of the LaSalle and Lee county entries. I've tried Parwin for Darwin, etc. Onward!

ZEECK THROOP MEDLIN Family Ancestors

We are looking for information about the John Zeeck who married Permelia Throop in Platte City, MO in 1841. The 1850 census says John was born in Bavaria (now Germany). They had 3 children that we are aware of: Charles William who later died in TX. John F. who later died in TX. The daughter, Sarah, was born about 1847-1849 (1850 census), but we cannot trace her forward from 1850. John and Permelia seem to have disappeared after the 1850 census, even though her parents moved to the Peters Colony in TX and are buried in the Denton, TX area. Permelia's mother was Hannah MEDLIN THROOP.

Re: Rachel (ZEEK) Lewis

Hi--
My great-great grandfather was Rachel's brother Michael Zeek. His parents were Peter and Margaret (McConnell) Zeek, which was originally Zick. Peter and his parents (Michael and Catherine Diessel)and siblings came to the U.S. (Baltimore) from Buchelberg, Germany in 1832 and eventually ended up in Huntington County, PA by about 1836. Peter was 10 when they immigrated. When he was a little older he moved to Blair County with his older brother Franz Zick. Franz, now Frank Zeak, settled in Altoona, PA and Peter and Margaret (now Zeek) settled in Hollidaysburg. I can't remember how many children they had off the top of my head, but Rachel was the youngest and I believe that she was named after her grandmother Rachel McConnell. The McConnells were from County Antrim, Ireland and settled in Newry, PA.
I hope this helps. Please share what you do know.
Thanks!
Sue
Susan Zeek Reighard

I realize Darke Co is located just north of Preble Co. Do you know if Laura Stella Zeek is a member of your family?

Laura married Willis L. Bunch and they lived in Preble Co near Eaton. According to her obit, she was born in 1865 and died 12 Jul 1935.

I am trying to determine if Willis and Laura are the couple who raised an orphan child, John McNamara (my grandfather). He referred to them only as "Uncle Will and Aunt Laura" (no surname) and had left their home by 1905.

Thank you.

LAURA STELLA ZEEK (1865-1935) m. Willis L. Bunch (1868-1951) Preble Co OH

am seeking information on Willis L. Bunch born c1868 Preble Co OH, d. 30 Aug 1951 at Duke Rest Home in Jamestown. He was married to Laura Stella Zeek born c1865, d. 12 Jul 1935. Both are buried in Mound Hill Cemetery, Preble Co OH. Obits list three children:

1. Charles Eugene Bunch who lived in Dayton in 1935
2. Marie Bunch m. Charles Wynkoop - Marie d. 1926
3. Esta Bunch m. ?? Hapner

My grandfather, John McNamara, was orphaned as a young child and raised by "Uncle Will and Aunt Laura" in the Eaton OH area. I do not know the surname of the couple who raised him. My grandfather left this home between 1893-1903, and was living in Cincinnati in 1906.

My grandfather said that Uncle Will was a wheat farmer and his farm was between Eaton OH and Richmond IN. He said Uncle Will lost a great deal of money in the "wheat bust" of the 1880s.

I have searched for over 40 years to locate and identify the "Uncle Will and Aunt Laura" in Preble Co OH who raised my grandfather.

As far as I know, my grandfather, John McNamara, was born in Lexington KY on 30 Apr 1884 (one record says he was born in 1874). His SS form said his parents were: Frank McNamara and Mary McCoy. I have not confirmed this with marriage or death records.

The family story is that his mother died when he was a baby and his father was killed on the courthouse steps -- no other details. Why was this chld taken from Lexington to Eaton? What relationship to him was Uncle Will and Aunt Laura?

If anyone can get in touch with these BUNCH descendants, please ask them to contact me directly at: mart2542@aol.com

I am now 70 years old. I have searched for over 50 years to identify the couple who raised my grandfather to determine their relationship to him and hopefully to further identify my grandfather's parents. Thank you.
Darwin Zeek is the son of William Zeek (b ca 1822 Indiana) and Ann E unknown (b ca 1826 New York), and he was born October 1, 1846 in Illinois. See the 1850 Census for Mission Township, LaSalle County, Illinois. He was in Amboy, Lee County, Illinois by 1870 when he married at that place Emma Jane Mahanna (daughter of James Mahanna and his 2nd wife Rebecca Adams - Rebecca was a widow and living with the Zeek family in the 1880 Census). Darwin and Emma were still living in Amboy at the time of the 1920 census. He filed for a military pension March 9, 1893.

I have made a life-long study of the 104th Illinois. Here's what I can tell you about him: he was 5'5" tall, fair complexion, blue eyes, dark hair. Born in LaSalle County. Farmer when he enlisted fron Ottawa. Discharged January 4,1865 at Savannah, Georgia on account of disability.

Are you sure he was born in 1851? He gave his age at time of enlistment as 15. If 1851 is correct, that would make him only 11 years old.
--Steve Adolphson
I have the 1880 census but is very hard to read, I show Sarah E. b. Aug 07, 1872. Also that Richards parents were William Zeek b. 1815 Ky. and Elenor Clevinger b. abt. 1813 Ky.
In the 1880 Ohio census, I show William age 58, Millie as wife (does this mean he was married twice) age 60, Martha Chambers age 35, John Kitchen age 16, James age, maybe 10, Mary ? age 33, Sarah age 24 or 29, I think Joseph Williams age looks like 26, Alixaxder Williams age 8, James Williams age 32 or 33, William Williams age 6, ? age maybe 5, and martha J. age 9/12 months. Looks like there might be more living in the same household, this is at the end of the page and I did not copy the next page, If you would like a copy of what I have, you can e-mail me at oh_nutin_honey@yahoo.com

Hello Susan,

My name is Michele Bonotto Watters. I came across your message regarding Michael and Catherine Zick. I am a descendant from Harry T Zeak, son of John Zeak, who is the son of Frank Zeak (Zick), who is the son of Michael Zick. Lot's of sons there!! Anyways, according to some family information my GGGGreat Grandfather and GGGGreat Grandmother Michael and Catherine came over from a little country between France and Germany. The name is Alslaps Lorraine. Forgive me on the spelling. I was explained that this little country was always at war. If Germany won the country was German, if France won they were French. Apparently GGGGGrandpa left when they were under German occupation--giving us the history of being german.

According to your message your found information on them in Allegheny county PA. My GGreat Grandfather John died in Altoona, Pa and Great Grandfather Harry was born and raised in Altoona, PA Could this make us related???

Please contact me, maybe we can share the information we have.

Thank you,
Michele

I also wanted to add:

John B Zeek's second wife is Lucille Luster b. Jan 22, 1937, who resides in Kentucky. They had five children: Brenda, Linda L(my mother), William D, Robert G, and Kenneth R Zeek.

My mother told me she had a half-sister Shirley and two half-brothers, Henry and John.

I'm amazed that I have received feedback. Please let me know of any info that you get. Thanks!

I have always had it from my grandmother, Lucille Zeek, John Zeek's second wife, that his mother's name was Mary not Martha.
Also, I was told that John B Zeek was born in 1884 and married twice. Can you relate on this Lydia Peters? I've never heard of her before. Could this be a mix-up or am I missing information?

In the 1880 US Census Records, I have located some information:
Richard Zeek b. 1846 in Kentucky, lived in Ironton, Lawrence County, Ohio during 1880. He was married to Mary(Kitchen) b. 1847 in Kentucky. Here are the children that they had up to 1880: Jacob L. b. 1870, Sarah E. b. 1873, Arminta 1875, William D. (I believe to be David as that is my uncle's name) b. 1878 in Va. The other children listed were born in KY.
Richard's parents were William b. 1814 (VA) & Ellen Cleavinger(?) (or Eleanor on some records) b. 1823 (VA).

In 1880 Richard worked in a sawmill and William was a carpenter. Their wives were homemakers.

I hope this information is correct and helpful.
