Hello.......Looking for ancestors for the CHATER name, particularly with an Indian connection. My grandfather, and gr grandfather were based for many years on Port Blair, part of the Andaman Islands. I would like to be able to find any further information out about them, and their families. Does anyone have anything on the CHATER's in India, particularly Calcutta.

Probably no help.

Hi,
Thanks for that. Although nothing showing as a direct link for me, I actually have Daniel Sutcliffe Chater born 11 Nov 1815, Western Province, Sri Lanka who married Eliza Gibbon. They went on and had James Gibbon Chater in 1855 in Cheshire. He married twice and the family is quite big after that settling in South Africa! If you want to know more, just let me know!

Hello Laura

I was very interested to read your second message, I think I might have something for you. Please ensure that any information I give you is independently verified, I do my best to give out correct information, but sometimes information can have mistakes.

I have looked at my database and found I have an Oswald Chater who had a daughter called Noney Violet Chater, born BEF 1915. She went on to marry someone called Patrick Thomas O’Brien on 9 April 1928 at St. Francis Xaviers, Bowbazee. He was born BEF 1906 and his occupation was listed just as C.S.D. I have interpreted this as Civil Service Department – however, this definitely should be verified.

I do not have any information about this particular Oswald’s wife.

I have a Thelma Mary CHATER born BEF 1921. Her father is listed as Oscar CHATER born BEF 1885, occupation Storekeeper Ammunition. Oscar’s wife was called Adelaide Robertina Hammond born BEF 1899. Oscar and Adelaide married 18 January 1919 St Johns Church, Sealdah. Thelma went on to marry Clarence Glanville Mulholland on 18 April 1938 at St. Teresa’s Church Calcutta.

As far as Iris is concerned, I have an Iris Olga Chater, but I don’t know who her parents were.

I also have listed an Iris Elizabeth CHATER , father Osmond Chater and mother Daisy Elizabeth.

I have no record of a Sunna anywhere.

Could Oscar Chater and Adelaide Robertina Hammond be the parents of your grandmother I wonder?? It seems a strange co-incidence that Oscar had a wife called Adelaide Robertina. Maybe Oscar was also Oswald? Do you have any further information.

I hope this has been of some help to you. Please do let me know.

Best wishes
Liz Chater

Hi Liz
I am hoping you still read this thread as I have an aunt Iris Olga Chater b1909 - d1983 (lived in Calcutta, India and died in Perth, Australia) and was my father Ronald's sister. Her father's name was Charles Frederick Chater and mother's name May Lorraine Dunkley. Is this the same Iris Olga Chater in your information. If so can you please help me with any info that you may have.

Cheers

Marion

Dear Marion

Thank you for your message. Sorry for the delay in getting back to you, but I have just returned from India and am only now catching up with a lot of correspondence.

Your aunt, Iris Olga Chater is indeed the same one that I refer to. Her father Charles Frederick Chater and my great grandfather Abraham John Chater were half brothers.

Their father, Arrakiel Arratoon Chater married 3 times in all. 1st to Eliza Florintine with whom he had 3 children, then to Rachel Jahans with whom he had a further 3 children (one of which was my great grandfather Abraham John Chater) and lastly married Caroline Sophia Letts with whom he had 11 children (one of which was Charles Frederick Chater).

So you and I are distant relatives.

Please email me directly brio1 at tinyworld dot co dot uk and we can chat some more.

best wishes
Liz
