I'm tracing my maternal grandfather's roots, however, little is known about where he came from. It is believed 3 Stobart brothers came from Scotland around 1852 to America. The family was in the ship building trade, one brother's name was James (my gggrandfather, b. 1840), another could be John (b. ca. 1838), the third is unknown. James settled in the Ohio Valley, Meigs County, Ohio. Any links or information would be appreciated.

I've just stumbled accross the Stobart segment of this message board and am delighted to hear that there are so many Stobarts in this corner of the globe. I am a Stobart and was born in England (I came out to California two years ago). My father's family are from the north of England (Darlington). I was born in the south and there are VERY few Stobarts there (literally one or two families). I'm afraid I know very little of the Stobart origins but would love to know what you have learned. I suspected they originated in Scotland... there are a few more Stobarts in the north than the south. If you have any origin information, please pass it on! Thanks!

Hi Hannah,

I am a Stobart living in Michigan. My grandparents moved here from England in the 1920's (Vincent Lewis Stobart and his wife Florence). I know that Vincent had at least two sisters (Ellen and Sarah). My great grandfather was William A. Stobart from Keighley, Yorkshire. I don't know if you are related or not. He had a brother John and his father was William Stobart.

I am having difficulty uncovering any information on Stobarts beyond that.

Hopefully, some of this helps.

Gail

Hi Gail,

Thank you for your response -- I only just received it. I guess Ancestry.com didn't notify me of your email. I've actually neglected the Stobart side of my research a litte but I'm hoping to start again, thanks to some more information from my father. I shall be in touch again soon when I've learned something else to share!

Best wishes,
Hannah

Surnames: Stobart, Stobbart, Stobbert in Cumbria
I was interested in seeing that your family tree went back to Cumberland.
I have been tracing my family and have so far got back to around 1795. To date the family roots seem to have been around the Sebergham area of Cumbria.
My great Grandfather was George Crosby Stobbart (b 1844 in Sebergham) - married Mary Jane Neal 17/05/1880 in Aberayron. The sibblings I have found are Isaac (b 1845 and Mary Ann b 1847).
His father was John (b 1816 in Sebergham) - married Mary Crosby Dec 1843. Documents have been found for John with the surname spelt STOBBERT and STOBART. Found sibblings were Thomas(1818), Hannah (1821) and Isaac J (1823).
Their father was George (b approx 1795) - married Barabara Todd 21/11/1814.
If there are any links please advise.

All the direct Stobart line in my family seem to be around the Tyneside area until we go back to Joseph Stobart ( my great great grandfather) who was born in Nether Denton Cumberland in 1802. In the International Genealogy Index his name is spelt with 2 bs which is strange. He was the son of William Stobbart and Mary Irwin. I have no information on siblings.
