I think Ihave worked this out.

John Fender Taylor ws probably illegitimate.

He appears on the 1881 census, with his mother, Georgina Allen, who was a widow, so her husband died before that date, and her children who are all "Allens", but her mother is also living with them, and her name is Taylor.

1871 census, showing John as John Fender, but he is with his grandmother and his uncle.

These people appear to have been born in Newcastle upon Tyne. BUT, it may bot be the correct family, as I cannot find any Taylor's born in the registration district of Berwick, which covers Holy Island. Cannot find a birth for William.
