I don't know if this helps you but in the 1881 census of East Anglia region. The name Ketteringham only appears in Norfolk. There is no-one with that surname living in Lincolnshire. Also Gainsborough was a busy centre on the river with lots of river transport.

Thomas Kitteringham married Lucy Walker - I don't know when or where. They had twin girls(Ivy and Myrtle), born around 1916 in Gainsborough, England. They had a son (Allen Walker Kitteringham) born later, in Ontario, Canada. I'm trying to find some record of Thomas and Lucy's marriage and of their parents. Any help would be appreciated.

I have a Mary Ann Ketteringham from Marham Norfolk probably born before 1850 who married an Isaac Howe (b1849)
A family book shows a John Angel Ketteringham (1859-1917)
a Frederick Ketteringham (1853-1925) a William Ketteringham (1845-??) and a Martha Ketteringham (no dates). Any link with whatever it was you were corresponding on?!

There was a Mary Ann Ketteringham baptised 8 Mar 1846 in Marham Norfolk, England. She was the daughter of John Ketteringham and Mary (nee Burrell) and the grand-daughter of Briston Ketteringham and his wife (Elizabeth nee Spruce). Most of them are buried in Marham churchyard.

Thanks for your response. It throws me imto a bit of a quandry as someone e-mailed me direct saying that my Mary Ann Ketteringham had a father William and mother Mahala Angel (nee Bell). and a grandfather James who was married to Elizabeth (nee Haylet). All were born Marham Norfolk!
Do you have any other Ketteringhams that you can tell me about to help clarify the relationships?
Clearly there were a lot of Ketteringhams in Marham around that time and I guess they were all in some way related?
Have you come across anybody with the surname Howe(s) in your search? Thanks again. John

Dear John,
I found Mary Ann Ketteringham on the 1851 census returns aged 5- she was the sister of my great-grandfather, Robert Bristol Ketteringham. I seem to remember seeing the name Mahala when I did the search, and it is quite possible, as you say, that there was another Mary Ann who was related and who could have been the same sort of age. I have also found a link with the name Howe. On the Births, Marriages and Deaths Index (FreeMBD) on Rootsweb, there is a marriage between Isaac Howe and Mary Ann Ketteringham in the March quarter of 1869 in the Durham district (ref: 10a page 391).
Best wishes, Ruth

Greetings Ruth,
If our Mary Ann K is one and the same, then I guess we are sort of related (I think) as that Isaac Howe you mention was my Great-great-grandfather. [Will you put me on your Christmas Card list now?]
Could you tell me the address of that website you mention please?
If you prefer, I am on

Kind regards, John

Hi Ruth, Just an update to our messages of Feb 02, the marriage certificate you referred to has turned up - the original. Since we last exchanged notes, my research has expanded. If you would like any more info., or if you have any new, please let me know. Regards John

I have your Mary Ann Ketteringham born 1848 Marham in my tree, daughter of Mahala Bell and William Ketteringham. She is my 1st cousin 4 times removed according to Family Tree Maker software. Her father William is the (sort of) brother to William Spruce Ketteringham (think he may have been adopted). I am William Spruces 3 x Great Grandaughter. My email is chriscunningham@ntlworld.com if you would like to get in touch.
