Anyone out there looking for the English Family in the UK?

My Husband knows nothing about his family. He was brought up by his Grandmother, Margaret English (nee Green)1897 - 1985 In Harrow north London she was born in Consett county Durham. His Grandfathers name was James English - he probably died in about 1963 (born around 1895.) Not sure where he was born. We know no more than this.
His father Harold English is still alive but we don't have much contact with him. He had a brother James English who we think has died.
His mother was Myra Sheills died in about 1959 and has one remaining sister Joan Stebbing.

His Grandmothers sister is still alive in New Zealand.

We haven't a clue where to start!! Any ideas?

Hi Mandy

My wife's GGG Grandmother was an English but they were from the West Newton and Bromfield area of Cumberland (now Cumbria).

I have some details of her relations on my web site at http://tgf.athnic.com but none that are in County Durham.

Have you tried the FreeBMD site for your husband's grandfather's birth? The site is at http://freebmd.rootsweb.com

Good luck and keep on searching.

Hi Paul,
I found you here http://boards.ancestry.co.uk/surnames.english/1056.1/mb.ashx

I am trying to find out about a Jack English who married Mary Elizabeth Johnston from Carlisle Cumbria and wondered if your wife is connected. They were born abt 1890's.

You should start searching the Census records for Durham, Northumberland. I have an "English" connection by marriage from Lowick in Northumberland. You should see if you can find your husband's grandmother or try to get her birth certificate. This will show her parents and area they were from. It is a hard slog I am afraid as there are so many people with the same names. If you want to go further back than 1841,then you will have to access the Parish Records for baptisms etc.

Good luck,
