Hi
I dont have anything about Joseph Hopkins but a gr gr grandfather called Thomas who was born in 1839 in Gloster Bristol. I would be interested to know whether you have found a link, although Thomas is a very common forename..
Thomas married a Welsh woman called Catherine and lived in Cardiff. They had quite a number of children and on the 1901 census he is marked as speaking both English and Welsh. I wondered whether he had possibly learnt the language as an adult or had moved to Wales earlier with parents and learnt it as a child.
It would be nice if i could find other family in the Bristol area

This is very belated but I have only just found your message. My Hopkins family came originally from Wales, John Hopkins was born in Swansea in 1810, his wife was Rachel Brown. Two of his sons were born in Bristol William born 1837 and Thomas 1838 at Clifton, Gloster. They later returned to Wales
